Janarim (pl. Janarii) - These large, scaled creatures are vicious with piercing teeth and clawed feet. While speed is not their strong suit, they will move in packs of 3-5 to corner their prey, using their strength and spiked tails to take down their food. Bred in Oba for war, they are almost impossible to tame in the wild.

Rayolun carefully skirted the Oban villages he passed… and the huge cities he saw in the distance. The land was dry, hot, and not something he wanted to experience for very long. He was quite grateful that his day skin was black… it kept him from overheating and burning. At least, he thought as he sat beneath a lone tree at one of the few oasis, it’s not humid. But if it was humid there’d be plants.. He debated which was worse. Dry heat and no shade… or hot and humid with plants. It was a difficult battle. As the dry heat actually allowed him to cool off faster while humidity smothered you.

He hadn’t met with anyone traveling; when he’d seen someone in the distance, he’d always gone around them, taking care not to be seen. I know I should try to talk with them, get to know these people, he thought to himself as he trekked along. But after that battle… after killing those bandits and slavers, why would I bother? So many of them have been arrogant, disgusting, or just not someone I even want to know. It was something he was struggling with. How to forgive the Obans for what they’d done? A part of him blamed them for Lasarra’s disappearance. If they hadn’t attacked Neued he wouldn’t have left her. If those Oban bandits hadn’t been in Jauhur, her village wouldn’t have been attacked and she would still be there. If if if… He shook his head and tossed those dark thoughts away.

He hadn’t traveled all the way to Matori and now heading through Oba just to get attacked by depression again! He took a deep breath and looked out over the landscape to distract himself. Helping in Matori… having a job to do had taken his mind off the pain. But out here, here was alone with his thoughts. His eyes spotted movement and he quickly crouched down, putting out a hand to pull Rownin into his shadow. Rownin looked rather funny without his coat; but he was in less danger of overheating now that Ray had trimmed it so he was covered only in short fur. But even so, Ray disliked risking it, and always made sure Rownin stayed in the shade as often as possible.

His clear grey eyes focused in on the slight movement of the tall grass that filled this area. It was near one of the oasis; a prime hunting location for him and predators. Was this prey or predator? Keen eyes caught the slight shifting of the grass in other locations as well. Perhaps it is both, he thought with a smile. He patted Rownin and grasped his spear before slinking off towards the closest movement. The janarim meat from his last kill had already been consumed; which meant he would need more food for Rownin and himself.

As Rayolun silently stalked his unseen quarry, he felt a tingle along his spine… A prickle of danger that shivered through him. His instincts, almost a sixth sense now after all his years of hunting, could sense the danger that was creeping up on him. He could almost feel the bloodlust. He didn’t even pause in his movements; that would just alert whatever predator was behind him. Instead he prepared himself for the incoming pounce he could feel coming. The blood lust of whatever was stalking him told him something of the predator; either a person who couldn’t control their feelings, or a young animal that also hadn’t learned to hide the bloodthirst. He smiled slightly as he heard the crackle of the grass behind him; here it came! Spinning on one foot, he planted himself and set his trident. The sight of a young janarim leaping out of the grass, broad clawed paws reaching eagerly forward and gaping mouth open to reveal the sharp fangs caused his heart to skip a beat. He took a step forward and thrust his trident forward; using the others own weight and speed against them. It managed to rake him with a claw even as it struggled forward, the trident sinking in eve further as it tried to reach the prey who had turned on it. Rayolun stared into its eyes as it died; seeing the fire in its eyes die even as it snarled at him. He planted a foot on the other’s broad chest and pushed it off his trident. He looked at the bloody length and shook his head in amazement; it was bloody except for the third coset to him. Rayolun crouched by the body and quickly pulled out bandages to stanch the bleeding claw marks. They weren’t deep…. but in this heat he didn’t want to risk blood loss or infection on top of the already dangerous environment. Rownin, silly but loyal Rownin, slunk up to him and started to growl, baring his teeth at something nearby. Rayolun, getting the hint that danger was still about, left off bandaging and grabbed his trident, preparing for another attack.. but it never came. Instead he felt an easing in the air, something quiet and much more in control of its bloodthirst had left.. leaving behind Rayolun and rownin to dress their kill, clean up, and move on. Rayolun made sure to check the tracks nearby; an older and much larger Janarim had been there. Glad this one didn’t pounce first, he thought as he left with a full bag.
