[This takes place in 2013, shortly after her Awakening.]
“Moooooom!” Rose Jameson looked up from the dishes she was washing with her son to her daughter peeking around the corner.
“Yes, sweetie?” Bailey walked over with a large book in her arms, frowning a bit. Whatever was troubling the girl involved space, if that book was any indication.
“Where’s Subra?” Rose blinked, looking to Reed with a raised brow. The boy shrugged and the woman’s gaze went back to Bailey.
“I’m afraid I don’t know what you’re talking about, sweetie.” The little girl’s shoulders slumped a bit.
“Darn. All I know is that it’s in space, and I can’t find it in the Space Atlas. I don’t even know if it’s a star or a nebula.” She huffed a bit, and Rose couldn’t help but chuckle.
“Sweetie, go look it up on the computer. You have permission, since you haven’t used your computer time yet, today. I’m sure you’ll find it on Google or Wikipedia. From there, you can do more research. Project for school?” Bailey shook her head.
“Heard about it while I was out with Daniel, and I wanna know more.” She was quick to make her way to the computer her parents let her use, setting her book to one side and logging onto her profile to start her search. Google proved fruitless after a few attempts, frustrating the girl and spurring her on towards Wikipedia.
Wiki gave her the result she was looking for, earning a delighted squeal from the girl.
“Omicron Leonis. Subra. It’s a binary star…” She scrambled for the sticky notes and a pen nearby, scribbling info as she read it. “It’s in the Leo constellation, and marks a forepaw!” Oh! That was a good start! She giggled, wiggling happily a bit. Success! That...was nifty, though. A binary star…”Bi means two. So there’s two stars! Two for the price of one! One’s a…” She frowned at the classifications, and opened Google in another tab.
what is a type F8-G0III giant star
Oh, of course Google gave the article for Subra on Wikipedia now as the first result! Bailey sighed, rolling her eyes before digging into the results further. And immediately regretted it, making a noise of frustration. Her mother looked in on her, worry on her face.
“Bailey? Are you...okay?”
“I’m fine, Mom. Just…” She looked over with a sad face. “Why do people have to use words that others don’t know and not include the definitions?” She motioned to the Google search she’d done, prompting Rose to move by her daughter and look. And then sigh.
“Ah yes. Scientific things. Sweetie, the scientific community likes confusing the rest of us a lot. That’s the only explanation I can offer. But you’ll learn it someday, I’m sure. You’re a smart girl, with a bright mind in that pretty head of yours.” She had faith in her daughter’s abilities. Possibly more than the girl herself had in them. Bailey accepted the hug her mother gave her, cuddling in and shaking her head.
“Not that smart, Mom...but thanks.”
