Oliver, I need a favor. can you meet me on the training field

Horace had spent the majority of his time between duties sleeping or not sleeping and simply staring at his ceiling. The concrete walls of his room had begun to feel like a box and he wasn't sure if it was there to protect him or keep him locked away. A silly thought, that - he could leave anytime he wished, if he wished. Horace didn't like the times he was alone with his thoughts and normally, he could through himself into duties or spars or any number of other things. But it all required effort that he couldn't quite muster.

He'd sent the text at Dr. Jannisari's urging. The expected lecture had never come and he didn't know if it would, if she was biding her time, or...

{you know what you did incorrectly. now get up.}

Wordlessly, he got up, shrugged into yesterday's clothes, and headed to the training field.

Oliver very rarely received summons on his phone outside routine coffee requests, so when the buzzing of a new text message woke him up from his nap, he was officially awake. He jerked his head up from the desk surface so fast he almost fell out of his chair, and for a second he scrambled to find his bearings.

Phone text from Horace, not Jack. Written analysis on bilateral temporal activation during weapons conversations was almost complete, as he remembered it, plus an unfortunate string of nnnn where his head had briefly rested against the keyboard. Time was... wow. It was time to take a break and get out of the labs.

He typed a quick message back, and shortly arrived on the field. Was Horace already out there, or did he arrive first?

Oliver was there when Horace arrived. He felt a little bad for that - that he'd been the one asking and yet still had been slower than the life hunter. Slowly, he moved towards Oliver. "Hey," he said, rocking back on his heels slightly. "I.. wasn't sure who to ask, but... about that favor.."

With a dry hiss, Jannisari appeared on his hands. Slowly, he formed his hands into fists, feeling how different his left hand felt. It felt... wrong, weak. With a shaky breath, Horace uncurled his hands. He raised them up,palms out, missing finger painfully obvious.

"I... I need practice."

Oliver smiled, and waved tentatively when he saw Horace approach. The other teen seemed withdrawn, hesitant in his own way, so Oliver nodded and waited silently. When Horace summoned his weapon, he immediately understood the awkwardness.

He smiled back sheepishly. "Y-yeah, I need to practice too... We can help each other, um, i-if that's okay..."

When the boy eyed his friend's hands nervously, it was not the one with the missing finger his eyes darted to, it was the small, sharp blades. He was getting back into the rhythm of sparring, but it had been awhile since he had confronted that particular fear. Last time he had panicked completely. It would be a learning experience for both of them, certainly.

He waited for Oliver to summon his weapon, uneasily running his own thumbs over Jannisari. With her silver weight, he was acutely aware of his missing finger, of how he hadn't fought Jan. His muscles tensed nervously. He moved forward, paused, and waited. It was a start-and-stop dance, awkward in its obvious anxiety.

Finally, he sighed. "Uh, why don't you... go first..."

As Horace fidgeted and tested the feel of his weapon, Oliver's axe dipped towards the ground. He was nervous too. Although the request for a fight had been sudden, now he could sense that familiar feeling of butterflies in his stomach, and tightness in his chest.

Still, at Horace's bidding he gave it his best try. The axe swung in a large arc, one that was easily predictable, and equally easy to avoid.

His body twisted reflexively as the axe swung towards him. He ducked around it, all muscle memory and not conscious thought. And it was that same sort of by-route movement that followed through. Horace moved forward, hands reaching, grasping, curling into fists. With an ooph, his left hand slammed into Oliver's stomach. The vibration of metal,. the difference in grip strength, in the way Jannisari pushed against both his knuckles and someone else's flesh. - it felt wrong. It was different, weak, not like before. He stumbled backwards, shock written on his face as he cradled his hand.

Oliver yelped and stumbled back, retaliating automatically with a swing of his axe before Horace was out of range. It wasn't something he wanted to do, not with the shock he saw on his friend's face. It was a reaction more like kicking someone in the face when ambushed by tickles.

"I-I'm s-so sorry, a-are you okay?!" He stammered frantically, letting the skeletal axe blade drop to the ground with a dull thud.

Oliver's axe hit an he stumbled, not from pain, but from unpreparedness.

{stop it - you are not this weak.take each ache as a hit well placed; shock will only cost you, fool.}
{Yes, Doctor.}

It was almost a relief to have her speak to him; her dry hiss a familiar near-comfort. This was what he was used to - beration for opportunities missed, pushing him forward with disappointment. Dr. Jannisari had kept silent about anything involving Jan, and in her silence he'd been more confused. She had let him draw his own conclusions without input, watching him silently. He could sense a vague interest in her as though love were a disease she were studying.

"I'm fine, Oliver. Sorry." He had to do this, could not let himself be weak in this manner. Horace moved in towards the other hunter easily, sliding close before his axe was lifted again. Grabbing the hem of Oliver's shirt, he yanked with his right hand, sending the left into a glancing blow along his side. It felt wrong; it felt weird, and his jaw clenched before he forced himself to smile with gritted teeth. Horace moved back and tried to circle around Oliver.

Oliver was far too in tune with the emotional states of those around him to not notice the dissonance in his friend's actions. The ease at which Horace stepped into his attack said his body remembered the motion, but it was his mind doing the stumbling. It was painful how forced his friend's smile was.

He swung the axe hard in the other direction, but there was a click and the hiss of sliding metal, and suddenly it was a heavy sword cutting off Horace's circling with a fierce blow.

"Don't have to apologize, just keep going until it feels right," Oliver replied, shifting his grip on the skeletal handle of his weapon.

He hissed from the muted pain of it, instinctively recoiling. But no, he thought, this was good. Focus only on pain, only on the way the sun beats down and glints off of that polished bone axe. Only this and nothing more.

His hand slid briefly along the edge of Oliver's weapon, a familiar dissonance - one he usually felt when touching another's weapon - singing through his fingertips. It was tempting to take the opening here, to lash out with foot into Oliver's knee. But Horace needed to pound away the insecurities and weaknesses that lay in his fist. Grunting, he aimed a blow at the other hunter's jaw. The shock of it thrummed along his arm.

"I can do this, I can do this." It was a muttered chant to himself.

"Ow!" Oliver staggered back and resisted the urge to at his jaw. The shield would protect him well enough, but the thought of adding more injuries to his face was not a pleasant one. He was not exactly vain about it, but he knew the more marks he got, the harder it would be to avoid notice.

Instead he swung the axe-turned-sword again, the air letting out a soft thrum as it rushed past the hollows and protuberances of the bony haft. It's movement was faster, and although at first it had been harder to control, now it cut through the air in a vicious arc.

Naturally, the young Canadian felt awful for attacking Horace like that, but if he were gentle... wouldn't that just validate those 'broken' feelings he suspected his friend of having?

Horace winced as Oliver cried out - he remembered how the other hunter had complained about his face and the scar it now sported. The retaliation was swift and painful, but Horace gritted his teeth. It wasn't the same enjoyment he normally found in fights, but instead a single-minded determination. He was grateful for Oliver. Horace wasn't stupid; he knew Oliver was hitting harder for him. The other man didn't seem to like fighting, was often a nervous wreck, but here he was, and it was for Horace.

With a grunt, he swung at Oliver, misjudged, and only grazed him. It was embarrassing, sometimes, how badly Horace did in spars. It was part of the reason he embraced losing with an unrivaled enthusiasm.

Every now and again it was okay to slip up. Especially when one’s opponent was often a little clumsy.

Oliver tried to dodge the attack, but while Horace misjudged his swing, the smaller teen tripped over his feet. With another yelp the axe flew upward as he struggled to catch his balance, and it probably only clipped his friend with a light smack.

Somehow Oliver avoided taking himself down completely, but there was no preventing the embarrassed flush to his cheeks.

Oliver fumbled and his axe shot comically up, clipping Horace in the arm. It wasn't enough; he needed to get iinto the rhythm of fighting again. Taking advantage of Oliver's imbalance, he rushed rushed around to his back. His hand darted out, grabbing and twisting Oliver's arm behind his back viciously. The impact of body on bodystill sent an odd twinge through Horace's hand. Grimacing again, he raked the sharp points down Oliver's side.

"Harder, Oliver. I know you can do it." He released Oliver with a shove, dancing back.
