Rayolun was looking out over the changing landscape as he contemplated crossing through Oba back to Jauhur. He’d been in Matori long enough and was missing the jungle.. and perhaps he ought to take Chalcedony up on his offer of a meal…. That and see how Kelina was doing... since he’d just left without a word to anyone really. He was a bit worried if going back to the jungle would bring back the pain… out here in Matori, helping them, always surrounded by the sight, sound, or smell of the sea and seeing all these people continue forward with their lives despite their wounds had helped him greatly. But if he went back there... would he be hurt again? He looked down at Rownin who looked back up trustingly at him.

“Only time can tell…” He said softly, bending to pet his raoti before taking that step forward, heading back home. He was not one to back away from something painful; to fully heal he needed to face his pain and move on despite it. And as much as he didn’t want to go through Oba… he also did not want to risk climbing that cliff again! Going down had been slightly easy because if he slipped he would fall in the direction he was going… while climbing back up the slippery rocks, each slip meant he would have to cover lost ground. That and he had looked at it again and decided that he’d been stupid to scale it down in the first place.

The land changed slowly from the beach side tropics of Matori to the drier savanna of Oba. It was hot out here.. hot enough that Rayolun ended up trimming Rownin’s thick coat to make sure that his companion didn’t over heat. He stuck to traveling from midnight to noon, avoiding the heat of the afternoon.

One day, as he was packing up camp he heard the sound of an animal snuffling nearby. He put the still sleeping Rownin into his pack and grabbed his trident. He’d seen quite a few large animals that’d looked dangerous as he traveled across the dry grass lands. If this was one of them he intended to be prepared.

Creeping out into the dark, he rounded the hill he’d dug a small camp in the leeward side of. Used to darkness, and with a bright moon above, Rayloun spotted the large scaled beast before it spotted him.. even if he was in his moon skin that shone in the full moons bright light. Broad shoulder muscles, a thick tail, and strong heavily toothed jaws made him pause. This creature was by far more dangerous than the radaku he was used to! Bigger too… I wonder if they use them as mounts, he thought, like we do radaku! In fact, the radaku barely made it to this creatures shoulder… making it a more feasible mount to Rayolun. I wonder if I could capture one and train it?

Lasarra would want one, he thought with a twinge of pain. The creature’s head swung up, it snarled at him then trotted away. He watched it go and wondered if he ought to see if an Oban would be willing to talk to him, explain what these creatures were and how to tame one.

He straightened and shook his head; the sight of the beast had certainly left an imprint! Did she feel like this too? He wondered before loud barking shook him from his reverie. He sprinted back to the camp, where another of the creatures awaited him; smaller than the other one…. but still looming over Rownin. Rownin apparently didn’t care about size; he was growling and barking at the creature just like he did to the Menzuri… I must have the most suicidal roati ever, he thought grimly as he dashed forward, trident stabbing at the Janarim. It bounced off the scales, the shaft vibrating from the impact. Hard scales, he thought approvingly, as he planted his feet and used jis weight to pierce through those scales; the trident sliding in with a crunch through the neck. He would have tried to capture it… except it was far too close and those teeth were too great a threat! I will have to capture one, he thought to himself as he looked sadly at the twitching body. At least I have food and some materials to make some weapons and armor from though! Rayolun never wasted a kill; if he couldn’t find a use for the creature’s body, he would flee if possible. Why kill something you weren’t going to use?
