The encampment was growing restless. Those under her charge were growing more weary of their newest additions as the days went by. Lux could see why they would be uneasy. The monstrous gift that had been bestowed upon her was growing. What had started out as a harmless basket she had dragged away from the remnants of the scorched forest, had emerged a twisted feral beast. But where others were frightened of the small clawed creature, Lux saw the potential for something great. The beast's brother, not so much. He was frail and did not suit her image. Lux did not want her beast to bond to anyone but her, so she had shoved the small colt at Malenki, another of her weakest links.
Lux silently watched the hustle and bustle in the clearing from her spot on a pile of furs. Her narrowed eyes centered on the small beast in question, who was currently wandering blindly through the field. The only reason she had not collided with any other members of Lux's nefarious crew was that they were giving her such a wide berth. They would notice the beast inching towards them and quickly move away. Lux clucked her tongue in disapproval. Why did they not see what she saw? How weak were their imaginations that they did not see the greatness in front of them, so young and easily malleable.
The bustling clearing froze instantly when Lux lifted herself to her hooves. She snorted. At least they were well trained. Holding her head high, she started her march towards her new project, barely containing her glee as her crowd of minions parted for her.

The beast's world was black and dismal. She had clawed out of her tight dark prison, only to be greeted with a larger, darker world. The unknown was scary. She knew there were many others around her, but none had spoken to her or touched her. She occasionally heard nearby whispers, but other than that, her world was quiet. It was... lonely. The only comfort that the beast had was the lingering smell of smoke. The first thing she could ever consciously remember in her basket was the smell, and it clung to the area she was in now. Sometimes, she would smell it strongly, and the scent would wrap around her and ease her to sleep.
The beast continued to stumble around the clearing, lost in her thoughts. Her claws flexed against the dirt, testing the ground as she carefully took steps. Her ears swiveled, taking in the fearful, hushed whispers that seemed ever-present when she was awake and moving.
"Monster," she heard. "Beast," was another one. She tilted her head and tried moving towards the voices, but as usual she heard the hurried steps that meant they were no longer there. The beast bowed her head and stopped moving. The clearing was suddenly silent, and the only thing she could hear was the consistent dripping of her hair and the small hissing noises it made against the grass. She was about to give up on moving around for the rest of the day, when the smell hit her. She lifted her head, suddenly alert, and inhaled deeply. It was so strong, and concentrated right in front of her.
She tilted her head, and hesitantly stepped forward, her claws prodding at the ground and searching. Another step. And another. Her progress was halted when her head hit something solid. Something solid and moving. The beast froze, waiting for the inevitable shuffle of hooves to signal someone's hasty retreat.

The silence was tense. No one but her little beast was moving. She felt a twisted thrill when the foal carefully crept her way. Yes, this was what she wanted. The foal bumped into her leg and Lux sneered at the collective inhale of the encampment. When the beast did not move, Lux stared down into the empty sockets of her skeletal face.
"Hello, my darling. Are you okay?" she cooed. "I am here now, do not be afraid,"

A voice echoed in the darkness. It was so sweet and inviting that it took the beast a moment to realize that it was directed at her. She was shocked and... hopeful. Who was this mare in front of her? And why did she feel so comforted by her voice and scent? Was this... her mother? Spurred by this thought, the beast moved closer, pressing her body up against Lux's legs and sticking her face into Lux's hair. The beast inhaled and felt oddly... at peace.

Lux snickered at the shocked looks of those around her. Was it awe or fear that they were frozen in? Eh, she didn't care, both were fine with her. She was not worried about them, they were already loyal to her... well most were. But those that were not would be soon. The 'suti's eyes swung down to the beast. Yes, this is what she needed.
"Come with me, my darling" Lux said with a smile, her sharp teeth peeking out. Her look was sinister and not matching her tone of voice, not that the foal could see. She turned and slowly headed towards her nest of furs, meeting the eyes of the minions around her with a smirk. All according to plan.

The beast was silent and content with her face buried in the soft hair of her mother. Or... she hoped it was her mother. She had many questions but... she was unsure of how to vocalize them. They bounced around in her skull and threatened to disturb her current bliss. If this was her mother, then where was she all this time? Had the beast been abandoned because of her hideous features? Because of her blindness? Had her mother felt bad and returned for her? And what was this place? The beast frowned as the smoky-smelling body shifted against her cheek, rousing her from her thoughts.
The beast briefly registered the mare's words before the mare was suddenly gone. Panic flooded her every pore and she let out a strangled and questioning growl. She heard her mother walking ahead of her and quickly scrambled to follow as best she could. She ran until she was pressed back up against the smell of smoke and let out a relieved breath when the mare didn't move away. The beast pulled back a bit so that she wasn't pressed up against her mother quite so hard and shook herself out, the gelatinous goo from her tail and mane dripping onto the ground. She felt some of the goo from her mane wipe against her mother and froze, chuffing nervously to herself as she realized that her mother's hair was not like hers.

Lux stopped walking once she was at her pile of furs and stood on top of it with the foal close to her side. The beast was clinging to her much like Lux had hoped she would. Like Lux was the only thing that mattered in the world. Like the beast was dependent on Lux. Like Lux was her mother. Lux hummed thoughtfully and gently pressed her hoof against the foal's back to coax her into laying down before Lux laid down herself.
"My beautiful baby... can you speak to me?" she asked the beast, inwardly rolling her eyes. She'd done the attempting to raise stolen baskets as your own thing, and it had not really paid off thus far. She eyeballed Malenki from across the clearing and tutted. But... despite that particular sniveling failure... Lux knew this foal was the key to something great. Another asset in her arsenal. A beautifully monstrous weapon that was loyal to only her. That was the dream.

The beast startled at the sudden pressure against her back. It was so very gentle, but... she was not used to being touched so casually. Or well... touched at all. She did not resist and lowered herself to the ground, curling up against the mare in the comfortable nest that oddly smelled so much like home and belonging to her. She was shocked when the mare said that the beast was her baby. So this was her mother.
"Mmmm...mmm.." the beast hesitantly growled out. Her unused vocal cords were scratchy and resistant the to sudden attempt at speech.
