Brenley heard the second portal he encountered before he saw it. Instead of screams, this one spewed a tinny classical melody, ominous in its innocence. Bren supposed it was an improvement. Vaguely. At least everyone coming out seemed unhurt this time. Some even looked amused.
This was all quite strange. If he hadn't been so intent on documenting it all, he would have already been back in his room, checking on his latest batch of knockout powder. Instead, he stepped through, flailing a bit as something pale and warm collided with his cheek.

He looked left, then right, finding the interior of this place as empty as the field, even though he was currently clearly indoors. He started to look down and almost succeeded, but before he could see what rested at his feet, something else smacked him in the head. He fumbled and caught it by accident, bringing it back a little closer to his eyes and frowning as he did. A bird? Why were there white birds running into his face?
Prodding at the unconscious creature, the reaper finally noticed the bullseye on the wall. He took another furtive look around the room, then tossed the bird gingerly at the target.

As if defending their fallen brother, five more doves pelted Bren on the face and neck, falling silent and motionless as they did. The first bird had done nothing, but Brenley grabbed a second and covertly pelted it at the bullseye anyway. If nothing else, the action amused him.

After another bird struck the target with no reaction from the room, Brenley considered admitting that maybe the bullseye had nothing to do with his escape. But why was it there at all if it wasn't meant to be hit?

He began searching the room, suffering more random bird attacks as he went. If the target wasn't the key, surely there was another? He didn't think the people of Valentine's Town would engage in the kidnapping of Halloween students, though perhaps he was underestimating them. The idle thought made the boil shiver, sparking memories of pliers sinking into pliant flesh, cracking bone, cold water rushing over his head and into his lun—
A dove much larger than any of the others clocked Bren in the back of the head, staggering him and pushing away his unpleasant thoughts. Due to its size, it didn't immediately go limp, bouncing off of his skull and smacking hard against the target. This time, the bullseye shifted ever so slightly, the movement accompanied by a faint creak.
"Thank you," he said to the floppy bird. He had been headed in the right direction all along.

As if trying to deter him, the storm of doves grew more insistent, blocking Brenley's range of motion and preventing him from throwing any more of them. Much like his dubious adventures in the screaming portal, the boil wasn't quite certain what he was meant to learn here besides determination and tenacity in the face of extreme annoyance.
He bent down, grabbing double handfuls of unconscious doves and flinging them at the target, hoping that some of them hit. In the end only one did, but that single boneless bird was enough to send him home. The doves ceased their aerial bombing and a portal blinked to life just below the bullseye, only faintly visible against the colorless walls. Brenley stepped back onto the grass with several other dove-pelted souls. He was the only one who wasn't smiling.
"Wasn't that great?" a nearby demon enthused.
With a shake of his head, the boil strode off toward his room. He was rather convinced these portals needed no further documentation from him.
