He'd been trying to set up a meeting with Sailor Chariklo since seeing her at Avalon a few months ago, but schedules and communication methods being what they were, the thing kept getting pushed back - rings and compacts were not exactly compatible, so honestly he wasn't even sure how he'd managed to pull this off and get this planned, finally. Good fortune, dead drops, and a lot of convincing people to act as intermediaries, mostly. Talking to Chaos was exhausting.

But hey, that part was over with and good riddance! Now, all he had to do was stand on a roof in the snow (because ********, it was snowing again, what the hell, it was almost March) and hope she showed up. Otherwise, it would be back to step one.

In one hand, he raised his lantern, hoping it might serve as a decent beacon. In his other, he loosely held a never-go-out that he planned to give Chariklo as a sign of good will - she'd helped on Avalon, and she'd helped in the dark, strange future they all seemed to remember. She was clearly a powerful ally to have... so what harm was there in trying to get on her good side?

(He still felt terribly sheepish about taking his family and running off to Babylon in his recollections. Hopefully it wouldn't come down to that again. If it did, he doubted that he'd do the same.)

Babylon looked towards the east, where he felt a powerful Dark Mirror aura approaching. He clenched his hand around the lantern's handle - hopefully, it was Chariklo. Otherwise, it was trouble.

Shivering within the coat she'd grabbed after powering up, Chariklo found herself wondering idly how on earth senshi and Negaverse officers in other parts of the world dealt with the cold. Were furry hats and boots normal for them in places like Siberia? Were they even anywhere to be found in Siberia?

Thanks to the mess at Avalon, she knew that the Negaverse had branches everywhere. Senshi... probably not so much.

Shaking her head, she paused to check her location and felt a Knightly aura not too far away. With luck, that'd be Babylon. She'd been wanting a chance to talk with him for ages and it seemed that the universe was finally going to let it happen. Grinning she quickened her pace, aware of a light through the swirling snow.

With a final rooftop leap, she grinned and laughed as she landed and pulled her coat and hood a little closer. Only a few feet away stood Babylon holding a lantern.

"I don't often get landing lights provided. Makes a nice change," she said lightly. "Especially in this damn weather."

In spite of her easy tone, it was clear that she was on the wary side and the dark circles under her eyes were evidence that the months since Avalon had not been easy ones. But a chance to talk to Babylon was simply too good to pass up.

"How's your lady been since that dust up?" she asked. It seemed just as good a subject as any to get things started. And with luck, his answer would be good enough to kill off one worry at least.

Babylon looked her over as she arrived, and he was glad to see she'd found a coat but he was willing to bet her legs were freezing. "Let's relocate really quickly?" he suggested. "There's a carport in the alley, at least we'll be out of the wind."

That change made, Babylon gestured to a pair of upended plastic crates that would serve as good enough seats. "Sorry, I wasn't counting on this weather. That roof's a pretty nice place to sit most nights, but this polar vortex bullshit just goes on and on." He knew, from his day job, the basic science behind why winters had been terrible lately despite global warming. He was not going to bore Chariklo with it.

"Avalon's been doing well," he said, setting his lantern down beside him. He glanced down at the never-go-out in his hand, debating the right moment to hand it over - not quite yet, he decided, although surely she'd noticed it. "She spends a lot of time at her wonder," he added, "But at least it's secure now. I don't have to worry about her safety there. She never had much of a connection with it before, so... I'm glad for that, too."

He wasn't sure if Chariklo knew Avalon's whole story, so he added, "I'm not sure how much you know about her - we were pages together. She was my best friend. She corrupted while I was away at school, and when I came back - I didn't think she could be purified. She was so far gone into the darkness. But - I still don't know all the details. The fact that she's alive is a miracle."

Hopefully that hadn't been too boring. "Anyway," he said, "Thank you. For the help."

Now, he held the never-go-out out to her. "A token of my appreciation," said Babylon. "I've found they're always handy to have."

He considered her dark circles. "Is something troubling you?" asked Babylon. "If there's anything I can help with - within reason of course, please say so."

Teeth near to chattering, Chariklo was more than happy to relocate to the carport. And even happier to sit and manage to pull her legs up under the coat so they could ******** weather," she agreed and wished that she'd thought to grab a couple of coffees or something. Babylon, in spite of his furry uniform, couldn't be that much warmer than she was. Her eyes followed his as he glanced down at something in his hand. For a moment, she thought about being nosy then decided against it. If he wanted her to know, he'd tell her. Simple as that.

Instead, she listened as he explained a little about Avalon and left go of the breath that she'd been holding.

"Thank the gods for that," she murmured almost too quietly to hear. "We all got punted back so hard and fast that I wasn't sure if it was a defense mechanism or if those ******** taken over."

Some of the tension drained from her shoulders and she smiled at his thanks. And when he handed over the tiny, glowing light, she nearly squealed in delight.

"It's so cute! What is it? Thank you!" Chariklo was laughing softly as she studied the small light and wondered about the etiquette of leaping at him to give him a bear hug. It would probably be against some silly Knightly rule, but she was tempted. She jumped a little when he asked her about the circles under her eyes. She thought she'd done a better job of hiding them! Bother, bother, bother.

Though...

"There... might be," she said slowly as she reached for a hidden fold of her fuku and withdrew a small pouch. Emptying the pouch into one hand, she hoped he wouldn't freak out too much at the dead starseed lying amidst the mirror shards.

"This was given to me by a cat-lady name of Zirconia. Who in turn had gotten it from that ******** Bischofite."

She glanced up, studying the Knight's face closely before continuing.

"He got it by murdering my best friend. I... I wasn't fast enough to stop him. I managed to save her body and myself, but I couldn't get the starseed back. Until recently. Zirconia said something when she gave it to me. That she didn't know if it could go to the Cauldron because of the damn mirrorcoat on it. Now, I wouldn't expect you to know about that, but you might be able to tell me about this Cauldron thing. Because I want to make sure that Bianca has a second chance. She didn't deserve the end she got. No one deserves that kind of horror."

Well, maybe Bischofite deserved some of the terrible things he'd inflicted on others to be boucned back threefold onto him. But that was neither here nor there for the moment. If Babylon could only tell her about this mysterious Cauldron...

"It's a bit of the light from my lantern," said Babylon, pleased that the gift had gone over well. "You can't use it to summon me or anything fancy like that, but it's useful anywhere you would need enough light to read by." He'd never heard any complaints from prior recipients - as far as he could tell, they all found their never-go-outs tremendously handy. "Anyway, you're right, it was a defense mechanism," he confirmed. "Wonders are smart. They can fulfill requests, respond to intruders... you just have to ask correctly."

Some Wonders were more obviously smart than others, he thought, considering the computers and traps at Mistral.

The introduction of the starseed quickly drew his attention away from anything else, though. "I know Zirconia," he confirmed, eying the starseed. She wasn't so much a cat-lady anymore, so he wondered how long Chariklo had been carrying this around in her pocket. The name Bischofite was less familiar, but after a moment, Babylon placed it as well - the mad general that Avalon stabbed. That had been months ago, half a year at least, but Bischofite had survived that night, so... when had all this happened, exactly?

"I've been as close to the Cauldron as it's possible to get," said Babylon, meaning that he'd been to Hvergelmir, and that was, as he understood it, the last stop along the way. "I - I had to return my ancestor's starseed," he explained, which was a sentence that probably required a lot of explanation if one wasn't already versed in knightly happenings, and he wasn't certain Chariklo was.

"Usually, Starseeds will go on their own, unless they're being held back or they're too damaged to make the journey," he said, "But even a damaged starseed can be taken back to the cauldron." The mirror-coating presented its own challenge, of course, but his understanding was that the cauldron purified all things. Everything was made right in the fires of creation. The cycle of reincarnation was what made the universe continue to spin.

Or at least that was the impression he'd gotten.

"It's not a place you can just walk up to the gates of and knock," said Babylon. "The Cauldron is Sailor Cosmos's domain, and she's... kind of reclusive? Doesn't show up much - but her knights can pretty reliably get ahold of her. You'll want to speak to Hvergelmir or Sarras. Tell them you have a damaged starseed that needs to make the trip. They can call her. They have ways."

Bloody ways, certainly. For anything less, he wouldn't have even given Chariklo names - but this was a noble errand she was on. Every soul deserved the dignity of this final voyage.

Wonderful," she clucked over the tiny light happily. "Simply wonderful. Thank you again, Babylon. I'll take good care of it."

It Wonders were as smart as he was implying, Chariklo had to resist the urge to shiver. The idea of a place being able to call in or repel folks was far too uncanny for her right now. Particularly when, to her vast relief, Babylon knew about the Cauldron. He'd been there! And on a similar errand to hers to boot.

Smiling a little, she listened with every evidence of drinking his words in. A gleeful burble of laughter that escaped from her at the mention of Hver and she began to nod a little. The name Sarras meant nothing to her, but Hvergelmir. Oh yes, she would make sure to ask Hver about this. Well, once she was out and about again at any rate.

"So this will take time and some effort on all sides then," she said musingly. "Fair enough. It's more hope than I've had in weeks. I'd kiss you right now, except I'm prety sure your lady wouldn't appreciate that."

Wrinkling her nose at the knight in a teasing grin, Chariklo seemed to slump in on herself a little from the relief of long held stress and care. Moving with gentle care, she tucked the starseed back into the pouch, though she left the mirror shards out. Then, with equal care she managed to attach the tiny lantern to her fuku where it wouldn't fall off or become lost.

Eyeing the bits of enchanted mirror with distaste, she turned her hand to let them spill to the ground at her feet. Then, with deliberate slowness, she lifted her foot just enough to bring her heel down on each, crushing them.

"I don't need those things anymore. I don't want 'em. Ran into a little baby officer a few days back and told him I wasn't ever going to steal energy again. So it seems silly to keep those things, you know? I'm tired of hurting people who don't deserve it."

Looking back up, she gave Babylon a sort of apologetic shrug.

"Doubtless I'll get in trouble for breaking those shards, but who cares, right? All that matters now is this little starseed and doing my best to ******** over the Negaverse before my time comes. Right?"

Though she couldn't quite articulate it to herself, she needed his understanding and approval for this. Babylon had been the only one to offer a safe place for the Dark Mirrors in that terrible future. And Chariklo was determined to prove to him in the now that his generosity had not been misplaced.

Babylon returned her smile, pleased to have apparently made a friend. "Most things worth doing do," he replied. "Require time and effort, I mean." It would all be worth it in the end, of course. Returning Menachem's starseed to the cauldron had been, even if he'd nearly died in the doing. He could only hope that Chariklo would get the same sense of fulfillment from helping her friend's starseed along.

He watched her crush the bits of mirror, and considered what he knew about how Chaos worked. There was a trade involved - greater power, in return for needing to recharge your power source - but didn't know what would happen to someone who simply refused to uphold their end of the bargain. Would they lose their powers? Perhaps Chariklo's tired appearance was the first stage of whatever degeneration was to come.

His smile faltered slightly.

"Your time?" he asked. Maybe she already knew what the end result of her strike would be. "Do you expect the Negaverse to kill you? Or do you expect to die?"

The former he could try to do something about. The latter, well, he wasn't so sure. It didn't even occur to him to think that Chariklo's court might turn on her - the dark mirror had fought against the Negaverse in the future that never was. (He didn't recall if they'd stopped draining energy.)

"Well, if the Negaverse doesn't kill me, Amytis might for taking stupid chances," she said drily. "I always figured I'd go down fighting. Used to think it'd be one of you lot that'd end up doing it, but now? Nah, I'm not making myself very popular with those assholes."

She shrugged again, seemingly unfazed by the idea of dying in battle. Sure, she wanted to live a long while yet, but realistically it wasn't looking too likely since she was smack in the middle of a magic war.

"Everyone dies at some point, my friend. I just want to take some of them along when I go. If I'm lucky and careful it'll be awhile. If not, well then, I'm not."

As long as she could prevent that terrible future from coming true, Chariklo rather thought that everything else would sort itself out with relative ease.

Babylon nodded - her tiredness, it would seem, was from overexertion and not from any kind of process of physical degeneration. Well, that was reassuring - though it did raise some major questions about Chaos that he wanted to look into once he'd had longer to think about them. Camlann had most of his memories of his time in the Negaverse - maybe he'd know.

"Well," he said with a tight-lipped smile. "Take care of yourself. I hope that one of the Cosmos knights I mentioned will be able to help you, and that you find peace for your friend."

It was such a noble errand that Chariklo was on. He hoped she found success.

"I suppose I shouldn't keep you any longer than I already have," he said, standing. The temperature had been dropping, he noticed, and he'd hate to cause Chariklo to get frost bite. "Thank you again for your help on Avalon, and I'm sorry that I couldn't make good on my promise of safe haven. I suppose it's of no consequence now - who can say for sure whether any of that actually happened? It doesn't have to."

The future was always in motion, after all.

"Good night, then," he suggested.

Returnign his smile with a grin and wink of her own, Chariklo stood up and made sure her coat was zipped and buttoned up before she ventured back outside.

"I try. And I have no doubts that Hver will be able to help the next time I manage to run into her."

She waved away his further thanks with a tired amusement. She'd just been doing what anyone with any sense or decency would do, right? Still, his apology made her blink a little and reach out a hand to give the Knight a rough pat on the arm.

"s**t happens, y'know? I suppose the cards just weren't stacked in our favor much. You at least offered that safe haven. It's not your fault things fell apart. It wasn't any of our fault things fell out how they did."

She gave his arm a final squeeze before taking a deep breath to prepare to go back out into the cold. Before she darted out, she turned to look at him over her shoulder.

"Good night, Babylon. And thank you again. For the lantern, the information and the hope."

With that, she raced from the carport, intent on getting to a mirror she knew of nearby and walking through.
