Underground there was no night or day time. The sun didn't fall or rise, but time passed just the same. Two idols, lovingly carved by their parents, began to stir. The wood became softer. The knots of wood softened into muscles stretching over living bone. The two cubs lifted their paws away from their platforms and stumbled against their mother's warm side. Exhausted from their awakening, the cubs had slept until their newly woven bodies were ready to begin their lives. Their muscles had to learn how to move, their eyes came into focus, sounds and sights began to take on their own meanings. Their bodies awakened, strengthened, and their little minds began to grow sharper rapidly.
That was days ago. Now the two little cubs were eager to explore their world. They understood their bodies, knew how to walk, speak, and comprehend.
Alucard had only just begun to realize there were a few differences between himself and his littermate. For one, Trevor was deprived of the large, leathery wings that he and his father had. He didn't have the needle-like fangs hanging over his bottom lip or the large, sensitive ears that he had. Instead, Trevor had scales like their mother had, a horn crowning his forehead, and an orb that glowed. Trevor also couldn't see beyond their little denning area. His little orb glowed like his mothers, making it very difficult for Alucard to look directly at his brother's face. The features were lost in a blinding surge of burning light, a wash of white. Only when Trevor was asleep in the dark was Alucard able to make out his sibling's features. He knew him well enough by sound and smell, but it seemed another dimension had been taken from them. Even his mother's features were often masked by the burning white.
Still, it wouldn't keep them from exploring their home. Trevor had time to charge his sphere so he would be able to illuminate his path as Alucard navigated their way ahead.
Even with their father's permission and their mother's blessing, Trevor was still curled up asleep in one of the many sunspots in Marie's room. Gabriel had made sure to make his mate comfortable in any way he could- to include holes in their cavern so sunlight could filter through to charge her scales and warm her body as she slept. Trevor, sadly, was curled up in one said sunspot. Alucard crept forward, avoiding the sunspots and raising his large wings over himself as a natural shield against the darkness. Even then, the sunlight filtered through the thin membrane and created a rough glare in his eyes.
"Trevor-", He nudged at his brother's side, squinting against the sunlight filtering down. "Trevor!"

The garden was flooded with the warm rays of the early morning sun, causing the space to be filled with pillars of light that helped not only feed the plants, but also helped warm two certain members of the Belmont family. Trevor in particular was basking in the warm rays, his scales and horn taking in every bit of light to help charge his orb for times of darkness. The feeling of it all brought about peace and filled him with energy that he was more than ready to expel in acts of play, and sometimes...more mischievous acts.
At the moment the area filled with the echo of the young lord's laughter as he ran through the garden chasing every butterfly that dared to enter his line of vision. The small insects danced around in the air, dodging the awkward paws and floating from flower to flower in an attempt to get a nice meal, which was almost always guaranteed. After all, Marie, his mother, always tended to the flowers every morning and afternoon, just as she was doing now.
With his paws dancing along the soft grass beneath him, spotted his mother tending to the flowers, and just as he began to move in her direction something caught his attention. Clearly, someone was calling his name for one reason or another.
His ears perked and eyes looking for the source. It was then that something, or more like someone, caught him by surprise.
"WHAAAAT!?" the young cub cried out as he rolled over with a whimper of annoyance.
Trevor rolled back over onto his belly with a huff, annoyance clearly apparent on his face, and eyes set in a glare towards his brother. Why did Alucard always have to insist on waking him up from, oh what did his parents call it, a dream? Yes, during such a nice dream. He had the sun in his face, his mother close by, the butterflies dancing in happiness, and Alucard just have to tear him away from it all! Oh well.
The young cub could only guess that his brother felt restless, like he always seemed to be, and wanted to play since it was a new day waiting to be fill with mischief and adventure. At least he believed it to be day from the feeling of warmth upon his back. It was always hard to tell from within the network of caves he called his home.
Getting to his feet, Trevor released one more huff before moving towards his brother to lightly shove him. If Alucard was not bothered by light he would have happily tagged at his wings, but he would not do such a thing, at least not at the moment. Such play could wait until the right moment.
"What do you want, Alucard?" Trevor asked with a yawn and a quick stretch. "Is Daddy busy with some important adult stuff again, or did you hurt yourself by doing something stupid that you were told not to do?"

The cub huffed and padded back a few paces. It was enough for him to lower his wings, slightly, so he could address his sibling in a more civilized fashion. Of course Trevor was fresh from a nap and was hardly fit to be seen by that was beside the point. They were old enough to explore the caves with only... minimal supervision. Gabriel was very likely going to watch his sons personally from the depths of his domain but even the smallest of liberties was massive at the moment.
He rolled his eyes at the off-handed insult. He never did anything stupid...
"Dad is letting us see the rest of the keep. I could go alone and let you get back to your...er...", he waved a paw, "Beauty rest. I suppose you could use it..."

Was Alucard really calling him ugly? He wasn't ugly! Their mama always insisted that he was as handsome as their papa! Obviously, Alucard didn't know what he was talking about. Maybe he really was as blind as a bat, or he was dumber than Trevor figured.
"What are you talking about?"
Was their father really going to let them go out exploring further in to the keep? Usually it was hard enough just getting foot or two away from the Magus, so why would he allow this?
Oh well. No need to question a good thing.
"Hmph! Well then,"Trevor tried hard to hide the smirk that wanted to appear on his lips. He really wanted to make a comment on how his brother would get them lost, and how he most likely had no idea where he wouldn't get them very far, but he resisted. "Just lead the way, brother. You are smarter and braver, right? Just like daddy?"
He could not wait to see what adventures awaited them.

"I'm talking about seeing our father's kingdom." He said as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. "We are the princes of the tribe, after all. We should get to see it for ourselves." He knew some of the paths, but not all. Perhaps Gabriel had purposely led his children down specific paths and neglected to mention others on purpose. They were old enough to walk and move about, old enough to know what claws and fangs were for, and old enough to get into trouble. The magus was no fool- cubs would be cubs. Alucard was even old enough to glide short distances from higher places. He delighted in holding that talent over his brother's head. One day he wouldn't have much use of stairs or long walks. Poor Trevor. Doomed to walk.
"I gotta lead the way!" He puffed his chest out and opened his wings slightly. "I can see better here than you. I don't want my baby brother falling into a hole or something."
He turned his back and padded to the large mouth of the entrance. Marie's garden was a pleasant enough place but even a garden could seem like a prison after a while. "We should go to the theater first. I'm sure we can play with the puppets."

A pout played on the young cub's maw thanks in part of Alucard's comment regarding his sight in the dark. True, he had some trouble finding his way around the tunnels of the Dark Tribe, sometimes even when the halls were decorated with torches and lanterns. However, he was not as blind as his brother claimed. He was not as blind as a dark b'alam walking about during the highest point of day! If he could say so himself, and he could, he believed he was very capable of finding his way around given enough time. Or if their mother was around to aid in leading him.
Tch, just because his brother had all these special features did not mean he was special! Special wings to aid in gliding across the night sky. Special eyes to aid in seeing in the dark. Special ears to aid in hearing others move around in the distance. And then there was the fact that dark b'alam drink blood for nutrition. SO SPECIAL.
With a huff of annoyance, Trevor scampered after his technical older brother, as he insisted on being titled. Then again, Alucard insisted on a lot of things in order to seem braver than he actually was. Oh how the little cub enjoyed stroking his own ego every chance he got.
Trevor could only guess that Alucard just wanted to be like their father. He wanted to be strong in order to protect those around him with all his strength. He wanted to be smart enough to know his limits and know how to work past them. He wanted to be a gentle, yet intimidating presence. A strong and noble ruler, yes. After all, being the dark child he would be working closely with Gabe when they grew older, at least closer than Trevor himself would be, as annoying as the thought was.
"Well, you will not have to worry about me falling into some kind of hole if you actually act like the good leader you think you are! And you know what, brother? Good leaders get lead their people to safety! So do not get us lost so mama and papa have to come find us! Because then they will not trust us anymore and we will not have any more adventures! So there!"
So much could go wrong with Alucard in the lead as he was...
Falling into holes. Getting caught in places they should not be. Insisting they test out one of his oh so wonderful ideas! It was like he thought himself as powerful as the characters in papa's stories. So brave. So strong. So...not Alucard right now. Tch.
"What if we find the place where that creepy guy is? I think papa calls him Cro-cro? Or was it Cronoto? Or what if we get lost and get stuck in the place with all the scary yelling? Hmph...maybe Uncle Zobek will find us if we get lost or the theater guy gets angry for touching his stuff..."

Alucard paused in the gaping mouth that led them deeper into the body of the dark tribe's lands. Here and there small lanterns hung from ornate hooks, most carved to look like the agape mouths of bolfs, b'alam, or other more stylized creatures. It was just enough to guide those without night vision through the dark, most of them blood-givers, and just enough to not blind the vision of the dark tribe locals.
Alucard sneered at the thinly veiled insult. "Then I guess you should stay close. Don't go wandering off."
Cro-cro? That didn't sound right. His ears fell back. Chronus? Chronis? Chroney? He wasn't going to try to remember it. The guy seemed a few fangs short of a maw.
"Uncle Zobek won't need to come find us- we can go find him. I'm sure he'd be proud- and father will be impressed that we were able to do so." He padded forward, flicking his long ebony tail behind him. His wings, awkward and large for his tiny size, flared open around him, partly to shade himself from his brother's light and partly to make himself a larger figure for Trevor to follow. The later part he'd not admit to. It wouldn't sit well with either of them.
Trevor didn't need help. And he wasn't a soft-paw.

Trevor chose to ignore his brother's comment rather than answer it with another insult. He knew well enough, even in their short existence, that if he did choose to answer the insult with another insult, that it would never end. They had done it before in the past, so who was to say that it would not happen again? Plus, Trevor knew their fight of words was nothing more than playful banter and, at times, attempts to one up each other. It was just how they chose to show their brotherly love for each other. No hugs. No, bleh, kisses. No sugary words or anything nasty like that. No, they chose to insult, to fight, to show it with little silent acts of appreciation.
"Do you-" Trevor was cut short as he stared intently as the structures that decorated the tunnels. He could not help it as his ears fell against his head and tail tucked close to his body. The poor cub even found himself walking closer to the ground and closer to his brother. He would never admit it, but it was not long ago that he found that the structures that decorated the tunnels terrified him. It was not truly the structures themselves which gave him nightmares from time to time, but just the way they appeared in the low light. They appeared...darker? Ominous? The candle holders just appeared more monstrous he guessed. Like they were going to jump off the tunnel walls at any moment and attack him. Like they were always watching. Always. It just did not seem right at all, but then again it was his father's decorating, right? Oh if Alucard ever found out about his fear he may not hear the end of it.
"Do you really think Uncle Zobek and daddy will be proud of us for wandering around on our own? You do not think they will be upset with us for wandering?"
It was a valid question, especially when one thinks about all the times their parents and caretakers told them never to wander off on their own. He never understood why they could not do so. However, he did vaguely remember talks about dangers, getting lost, getting hurt or something along those things. But who would hurt them? How could they get lost when there was always someone from the tribe wandering the halls at every hour of the day? Trevor did not understand why everyone insisted on worrying.
"HMPH!"
Alucard was not kidding when he stated he needed to stay close to him. Though he had his own personal light thanks to his horn, and the aid of the candles, Trevor just was not paying attention to his surroundings. This lead to the poor cub nearly tripping thanks to a hole in the ground.
"So uh..." best talk fast so his brother does not comment on the mistake. "How do you even know where the theater is? Have you been there before?"

Alucard rolled a large ear back, listening for the subtle shifting of his brother's movements behind him. He was well aware of the cub's discomfort. He had repeated his question, his voice was a little tighter, and there was a nervous weight to his movements that gave away more than had he come right out and admitted to his fear. It couldn't have been easy. Alucard's eyes were able to pick out every detail from the darkness, giving it form, color, and life. When he looked into the light Trevor created it robbed him of that. He could see only blurry shadows and faint shapes against a throbbing nightmare of blazing white light. For Trevor, it must have been much the same. He could only see clearly through his light but he didn't dare shed it too far from him less he offend and anger those who shared Alucard's eyes. The light added sinister highlights to the grotesque figures carved into the towering pillars, giving life to their otherwise dead, stone eyes. The dancing shadows animated the world around them. It was all too easy to feel as though the shadows had come alive and danced around them.
"Well, whether they do or not- we're already out here, arn't we?", Alucard pointed out with a smirk. "This is going to be our kingdom when we grow- we should learn it. We should know it better than anyone. I think we've learned our den quite well enough. We should be able to stretch out a bit. Besides, we're almost two months old now. We're practically adults."
He didn't miss the stumble either. He froze, fighting his first instinct to whirl around and check on his brother. It would only add injury to insult. Instead, Alucard turned his head and pretended to admire a nearby pillar. From the corner of his eye he assured himself that little Trevor hadn't gone stumbling into a bruised claw or a stubbed toe.
"No...but I've not cared to. The drama and theatrics don't...really tickle my interest. I'd rather find where father keeps his battle claws."

Trevor shook his head at the thoughts that were starting to circulate through his head at the moment. The young light cub knew he needed to have some amount of trust in his brother. After all, he seemed to have a better understanding of the tribe and its ways than Trevor himself did. But then again, that was to be expected since Alucard seemed to spend more time with their father and his most trusted companions than Trevor did. Being one whom was more fond of the light, Trevor mostly found himself in the company of Marie, their mother. Then there would be times when Zobek would humor him and allow the young cub to tag along during his errands and short journeys. If not either of them, well...he would sneak away or beg his mother to take him to spend time with Pagan in the library or wherever the carver was stationed to work for the day.
Still, Trevor knew Alucard should know more than him, as the cub was supposed to hold higher ranking in the future while Trevor himself...well, Trevor was no sure what his title would be. Was he to aid his father in some manner? Was he to aid his brother? Or would be spend his time just wandering the halls just picking up tasks as they appear? Hm. Maybe now was not the best time to think about the future. This supposed to be a day full of fun and adventure after all, a day to just bond as brothers and cause potential mischief.
"Tch," a smirk of amusement painted Trevor's lips at his brother's words. "I suppose actors cannot expect everyone to appreciate the arts, not matter how flashy or humorous they may be. Or are you just scared of the puppets they bring out from time to time?"
It was then that Trevor's ears perked at the new information concerning his brother's plans. Did he really just say what he believed he said? To try and track down some of their father's items, well, that was new, and potentially dangerous. But was it more dangerous for them or their father should their mother hear of this little plan? OH WELL!
Bounding forward a bit, the green scaled cub bit his cheek a bit while staring his brother in the eye, or well, attempted to.
"Why would you even want to go and mess with father's stuff, huh? Does little Alucard want to see if he can fit into father's armor, hm? Does he want to see if his little cub paws can fit into father's steps so to speak?"

Alucard shuddered. Part of Trevor's statement rang very, very true. He hated the puppets. Their lifeless, dead eyes, their dangling limbs, the unnatural, stiff way that they moved, and the insanity of the pupeteer himself was all very, very unsettling. The whole theature just didn't sit well with him. He understood, on the surface, that it was meant to tell stories and promote some kind of cultural bridge between tribes- or so Father said -but to him it all seemed so forced, so corny, and so....false.
"Let's just say that I do not enjoy the...insincerity of the theature." He smirked. "I would really rather tell my own story than that of someone else, or some fantasy that's supposed to issue out a moral that is better learned by action rather than sitting on my rump."
In regards to Trevor's final remark he pulled his wings in and glanced away. "Of course not. That would be putting on a costume, wouldn't it? Father's armor is father's armor, it will never suit me. I want to wear my own armor and be worthy of it." He glanced sideways, "And what of little Trevor? Does he aspire to growing a garden of light within the heart of the mountain like our dear mother? Or will he learn to find his footing in the shadows?"
