Kara awoke slowly. The sounds of the evening made their way through the thin walls and single window in the room. She slowly became aware of her brother’s body next to her and his hair — it was everywhere. She grunted as she pushed herself up and glanced towards the window. They had slept longer than she had anticipated. Though she supposed, after a nonstop trip down the mountain, it wasn’t surprising. By the time they had finished eating breakfast and talking of colors, Kara had barely been able to keep her eyes open.

Her gaze flicked to her brother, eyebrows raising as he remained fast asleep. In that moment, Kara wished she had eyes just so she could roll them at him. “Ataya…” She nudged his arm lightly, attempting to wake him up gently. “Wake uuuuup little brother. We’re going to miss our chance to explore the city.”

Ataya slept solidly, locked in a deep, satisfied slumber. Warm. Comfortable. Tucked in. Nothing could disturb his—

He stirred, making a muffled, fussing whine when something first pushed at him from the outside. His mind fought it. It couldn’t be time to wake yet. Far too early. Far, far too—

“…uuuuppp, little brother…mmmrmrmr…city…”

Ataya squirmed, hair sprawling out all the more as he rolled and attempted to bury himself beneath the nearest pillow. “S’not even…” He yawned beneath the cloth, “…morning’n’m…gonna go…way…”

Kara huffed and tugged the covers away from Ata. “Of course it’s not morning. We slept through the morning.” Coming down the mountains and exploring the city had been his idea. Something that he had talked her into and now all he wanted to do was sleep away their time. She wanted to get out of this inn and do what they came to do — along with seeking out Nesrinn. Her gaze flicked to the door and she only briefly thought about heading out without her brother. She decided against that, though, and instead turned her attention back to him.

“We’re supposed to explore the city, Ataya. If you don’t get up now we won’t have time. Besides, if you don’t get up now I’ll just be forced to push you out.”

Ataya stilled, narrowing his eyes — still beneath the pillow — and briefly burying his nails into the mattress, like a feline digging in claws. “You wouldn’t…”

She tugged away the pillow, eyebrow raising as she shifted so that she was kneeling on her knees, ready to push if needed. “Want to test me?”

“Nnnnnnhhh-nngghnnnhn…” Ataya whined, scrabbling uselessly for pillow and sheets before pushing up onto his elbows to eye his sister blearily. His hair, like a limp mop spilled all down around his face — in addition to everywhere else — and it was only through the long dark strands that he managed his rueful glower-pout. “Woe befalls me for my sister of fifteen faithful years betrays her helpless brother in his weakest hour, leaving him to…”

Ataya frowned, trailing off as the actual surroundings sank in. He blinked, and a moment later pushed up, combing a handful of fingers back through his hair to guide it out of his face before squinting around the room.

Oh. Right,” he recalled. “Right, I…” He yawned, layering a hand over his mouth and sinking slightly in posture. “I remembered that…fully…perfectly…” Sinking, he flopped back onto the cot with a mumble. “Five, just…five moments, lovely sister, I’ll rise just…pity, take pity and…” He nested his face into the mattress. “Mmm.”

A pause.

“…hair brush?”

When Ata flopped back down, and buried his face into the mattress, Kara moved to begin shoving. She paused at his random, one word question and looked at the back of his head, confused for a moment. When the word finally registered with her she huffed and climbed off the bed. Fetching his brush she moved back over and plopped down. “Here. Now get up and get ready.”

“Mmmhn.”

A grunt.

Shifting.

A stretch, wherein Ataya rolled back and forth twice, preceded by an extensive, weathery sigh. Then, finally, at long last, he pushed himself upwards, fumbling blindly until his fingers fell on the brush. He mumbled something that was probably a, “Thank you…” but muddled enough by a yawn that it became impossible to tell for sure. He did, though, manage to begin the careful and methodical process of brushing his own hair.

By stroke fifty of his typical one hundred, he was feeling at least among the living again, and hummed as his gaze moved for the open window. “Evening,” he observed aloud. “It sounds lively…did you look to see if anything was going on in the streets? We’ll be all the more fortunate if there are festivities. Longer for Mother and Father to find us and something interesting to do with our time…”

When he finished with his hair, all of it a great pool around him now of neatly tamed black-purple strands, he pushed to a stand and held the brush out to his sister, offering it up before moving over to begin re-dressing properly. By the time he was fully dressed, he felt more or less fully awake as well, and his mind was up and alive again, the giddiness of the night prior returning to him anew. He walked to the window, perching his elbows atop its sill and peering out.

“It looks promising…any idea where your wonder boy lives?”

As Ata brushed his hair, Kara finished getting ready herself. When Ata handed her the brush, to use, she raised an eyebrow and eyed the thing. It would be pretty useless trying brush out her wild curls. Shrugging, she put the brush back into her bag and proceeded to gently run her fingers through her hair, untangling a few knots that had managed to form while sleeping. At this point, she was surprised that Ata’s hair hadn’t gotten caught up in one of her knots as well.

She watched as her brother moved to the window and propped himself against the sill. “I’ve no clue,” Kara said as she moved over next to Ata. “I’m sure matched at the pit are done by now. Maybe he’ll be at the festival…?” Though, in all honesty she didn’t hold out much hope for finding him there. Even if he had decided to go, on this particular night, the area it was taking place in was very likely to be so crowded she’d never see him. “Even if he’s not, I’d still like to go.”

Ataya lingered at the sill for some time, eyes darting from one thing to the next. Though the view wasn’t magnificent, it was decent enough to tell that something was certainly going on, and clear that afternoon had long since bled into evening, bathing the scene in red-orange, soon surely to darken into night. After thrumming his fingers once atop the wood, he leaned back, pushing off of it and sparing his sister a glance.

“I am glad to spend this time with you, sister,” he said. “I appreciate your willingness to partake in endeavors with me despite them being fated to end in admonishment if nothing else. It would have been lonelier without you. Are you ready?”

Kara smiled and flushed at her brother’s words. “I’m glad we get to spend time together too, Ataya. We will deal with the punishment when it comes. For now…” She grinned. “...we are to have fun.” She gathered her things up and headed for the door. “I’ll go get Lyari and meet you downstairs.” She headed out of their room and down to the stables, where Lyari had to sleep for the night, on the inn keeper’s insistence that no ‘animals’ were allowed inside the building. Kara had not been happy about the treatment but Lyari seemed not to mind his arrangements, and after much insisting he would be fine, Kara had relented.

“Lyari?” She called out to her friend as she entered the place where their, and other guests, hastars were kept. At the sound of rustling above her head, Kara looked up just in time to see Lyari peek his head over the edge of the hay loft. “Ready to go explore the city?” she asked as she grinned up at him. He trilled happily and jumped down from the loft, landing easily behind Kara. She laughed as she turned and moved over to him. “Did you sleep well?”

“Yes. Time for fun?”

“Mhm. Let’s go make sure Ata is waiting for us and he didn’t fall back to sleep, hm?” With that, they were both heading out of the stables and back to the front of the inn.

After Akara left, Ataya grabbed his cloak, prepared to slip it on over his shoulders, but then hesitated, frowning. He often wore it, now, particularly when travelling in public, because apparently figures in hoods and bulky clothing with shrouded faces were less objectionable and suspicious than gaunt teenage hybrid boys. But despite it being late autumn, approaching winter, he didn’t need it to stave off the cold. While still suspended in his indecision, though, his gaze caught on the small dresser mirror near the door. Immediately, his shoulders stiffened, back straightening, and brow pinching together as his face stared back at him.

Ugly, ugly, ugly. You’re hideous. Look away, why don’t you? You know what you look like. It won’t change no matter how many gods you pray to—

Sneering, Ataya jerked his gaze away and tugged the cloak over his shoulders before turning stiff on his heel and leaving the room. The door CLACKed violently shut behind him. He pulled the hood up on his way down the steps, and that was how he was as he stepped out, over the threshold and into the evening air to greet his sister. The smile that he pushed onto his lips then was less convincing than those prior.

“Come, then,” he said, “let’s see what this city is made of past curfew.”

As they wound their way through the crowds, it became clear some version of festivity was definitely going on, from the occasional outlandish, festive outfit, to brightly lit lanterns of all sorts of decorative shapes and sizes, stalls opening instead of closing for the evening. And music. In spite of himself, Ataya felt his brief surge of a foul mood from earlier edging away again as his eyes darted about, greedily drinking in the details.

“Well, sister,” he said at length, “…it would seem the night is ours. Since you are the honored guest with me here on this journey, where would you like to start?” As he asked it, his eyes landed — and lingered, despite his best intentions — on a stall of especially promising-looking, golden, caramel-glazed fruits and other assorted sweets.

The sights and smells of the festival were almost overwhelming to Kara. Her gaze darted around, taking in everything that it could and yet she still felt as if she missed things with each glance. Her gaze fell to Ata when he spoke, a small smile curving her lips as she followed the direction of his gaze. “They look good, don’t they?” Her smile turned into a large grin as she linked her arm in his and began heading towards the stall. “Let’s buy something, hmm?”

Ataya blinked, startled at first by the unexpected gesture. A moment later, heat crept up his neck and into his cheeks. But he didn’t pull away. Instead, he nodded in silence, following his sister’s lead towards the stand and eyeing the array of options with new relish. All the members of his family criticized that he ate both too little and not often enough, but often he simply didn’t have the appetite or desire. Sweets, though, seemed to hit a particular vein in him, and — particularly those things labeled by others as ‘icky’ sweet or simply too saccharine to bear — appealed to him immensely.

The woman running the stand eyed them narrowly. “Oi, you’ll need coin for them, y’know, we’re not passin’ out donations for the beggin’ poor. Show coppers or more your noses along.”

At his sister’s side, Ataya stiffened, eyes narrowing and mouth opening, an unintentional chill rippling outwards.

“We have coin,” Kara huffed as she pulled out her coin purse and pointed towards the caramel-glazed fruits and a few other things. Once the woman behind the stall had their purchases bagged, Kara handed over the coin and took their sweets. “You’d do well to learn some manners. We may be hybrids but at least we aren’t rude.” Kara’s eyes narrowed on the woman before she turned away and held her head high. “C’mon Ata, she’s not worth it.” Kara tugged at his arm and held up the bag of sweets, grinning as she pulled him away from the woman. Her gaze darted around, trying to find something — anything — to distract Ataya from what had just happened. When the sound of cheering intensified, Kara’s gaze flit to the source. A crowd gathered, denser than where they were currently standing. “Let’s see what’s going on?” She didn’t give him a chance to even voice his opinion before she was tugging at him and weaving through the crowd.

The farther into the crowd the went, the warmer it seemed to get and it made Kara wonder just what was going on. As they broke through the crowd, her eyes widened at the sight before her. “Woah.” Flames, lots of flame, danced through the air, following close behind the dovaa dancing for the festival goers. Her eyes darted between the dancers, taking in their bright festival clothes and how each fire was unique, in some way, to that particular dovaa. As her eyes flit from dancer to dancer, they lingered on one and narrowed slightly. “...Rinn?” She tugged at Ata’s arm and pointed towards the masked male dancer at the other side of the crowd. “Ataya...is that Nesrinn?”
