Cabaret coasted between the evergreen trees. The scent of fir reminded him of home. It had been so long since he'd been home. He never would go home again to those lofty mountains covered in cool mist. Trees filled with nests and the soft sweet whisper of the wind amongst the trees. It sounded as though they spoke to him. He used to imagine that as a child.

Sometimes he thought of those stolen childhood moments again in a home he could never go home to. His hooves hit the ground and he glided to a stop. A gleam of orange greeted his eyes and the familiar sheen of armour.

He inclined his head to the mare and smiled.

Kara wandered through the trees, her head high and looking around at everything, trying to remember if she had ever seen any of these trees before, but all the forests had begun to look the same since she had left home months ago. She had meant to leave the nest to go see the beach, but she had gotten stuck on the beach when the tide came in and trapped her - and she had been wandering away since, trying to find her way home again.

Sighing, she resigned herself to trekking through more wooded land and tripping over more tree roots. She had just looked down to watch her feet again when something glinted in her peripheral vision: vivid plumage and silvery steel. Flicking her head back up, Kara met the brightly glowing violet eyes of what looked like an enormous bird. It took her a moment to shake the thought from her head; he was a soquili, of course. And he had nodded to her.

Nodding back, Kara returned his smile. "Hello," she said, tail twitching a little in curiosity. "Who are you?"

He took in her bright hues and bright eyes before taking a step close. "I'm Cabaret," he inclined his head slightly. "And who are you my lady?" He ruffled his dark wings to settle his wings. His muscles were slow from flying--he had come far--but it felt good to stretch is muscles. It had been a long time since he's flown this far.

"I'm Kararti, but I go by Kara," she replied, tilting her head as her eyes caught the iridescent shimmer of his feathers. They were beautiful - cranberry red and plum violet, like a finch she had seen once. The armor he wore reminded her of her own. "Why do you wear armor when you fly?" she asked, nodding her head toward the silver breastplate. "Doesn't it hinder you, or at least weigh you down?" Her questions were curious, not meant to sound accusing, if they did; wearing armor was his choice, after all, and he probably had had some experience that required it. Her own had been given to her by her mother.

"Habit. Circumstance." Upon adulthood each mare and stallion from his homelands had been given a set of armour when they proved themselves. But his homeland was lost to him, gone forevemore. "And what of you milady? Why do you wear armor? You wear it well as though you see enemies at every corner and wish to vanquish them." The bold purple swirls on her back caught his eye and he wondered if there was meaning to this pattern.

Raising an eyebrow, Kara lifted her shoulders slightly in a soquili version of a shrug. "Mine was given through family tradition. It was the only good thing that my skinwalker grandfather passed onto my mother. I think we wear it to protect ourselves from him if he ever comes back." After a moment, her eyes widened. She had said that all nonchalantly - like she didn't have a taint in her blood. She didn't think she did, anyway, but others might. "He was cursed," she added hastily. "He didn't pass much onto us except markings."

"And the attitude of a warrior. Cursed may be...cursed, but they are battle-worthy. It's his genes that make you able to defend against if he came back," he smiled. "Strange the little things that life likes to mock us with? You wish to leave home all your life, and when you're gone all you wish for is home. Strange how it happens isn't it?"

He ruffled his feathers gently, looking around the area with careful vigilance. "Has he ever tried to come for any of you?"

"I... don't really think I have the attitude of a warrior?" she said, tilting her head slightly to the stallion who was apparently more warrior-like. "He's never come back. I don't know if my mother has even met him." After a moment, her mind reeled back to what he had said. "Did you leave your home? I did that, too, but I've been lost from my parents and brothers and unable to find them since. I got trapped on a beach."

"Perhaps I misspoke. You have the makings of one. A natural wariness if you will." He glanced off into the trees past her. "That's good. I hope he never does come for you." He shifted his wings, settling into a different position.

"Yes, I left it long ago." And now there is nothing left, no home to go back to. What had happened? He might never really know. It didn't matter though, there was nothing he could about it anymore.

"How did you lose them? Trapped on a beach? Why? How?"

He stood perfectly still, the sun glinting off his metal armor. He knew that the rich colors of his feathers shone in the dappled sunlight. The world was still around them, no predators were near by. His senses were sharp, honed by years of practice and guarding.

"But you want to go back to them don't you?" Perhaps, he might help her. Right now he was directionless in life with nothing to hold him to any one place.

Kara shrugged again letting out a little "mmph." She hoped her grandfather never came for her, too. The natural wariness he spoke of made her mind twirl for a moment - her father had always called her a little kitten, and it was not helped by the fact that she flicked her tail and twitched her ears like a cat. Perhaps this male had picked up on that, though it might seem a bit more subtle. Her tail flicked at the thought of it.

"Well, I started walking on the beach at low tide, but I didn't turn around in time to make it home before high tide. So I got trapped in a little nook in the shoreline, and some kind of land fall on the other side blocked the way home off once I got around it." Her mouth twisted downward and she spoke, and suddenly she felt that squeezing fear in her stomach again, as if it were that unfortunate moment again. Looking back up at him, she nodded, but her eyes narrowed. "Of course I want to go back home. I have my brothers and parents out there with not a clue where I am. Don't you want to go back home?"

He could see the longing on her face, the eagerness and hope warring with the fear. She had somewhere to go home, those she loved and needed. Those she wanted to be safe and not to worry about her.

Whens she asked, he felt the solid walls in his heart rising up. He did want to go home, now more than ever. But sometimes, it didn't matter what you wanted or needed, that didn't matter.

Wishing and hoping didn't make it so. He could never go home again. There was no more home to go to. And that was all there was to it.

He pushed the thought from his mind and shut the doors, locking away those thoughts for now. "No," he said softly. "I don't think I do want to go home again." Because for some people, home didn't exist.

Oh, how she wanted to ask. She wanted to ask so badly. But the soft tone of his voice hinted that something more intricate than simply being lost was his reasoning for not wanting to go home, and it seemed as if he was closing to that conversation. Her tail twitched again, and the fear squeezed in her stomach. Had something more sinister happened to his home? Had he run away on purpose? He seemed a warrior type, though, and from what she knew of warriors, they didn't like to do that. Pressing her lips together, Kara tried to figure out where to steer the conversation next. "How long have you been here?" She felt bad about her small talk being so... small... but it was all she could think of unless he would allow her to invade his personal space and run an eager eye over all of the shiny things that adorned his body.

He could see that she wanted to know, that she wanted to ask. Some sense of duty or manners kept her from it, and he almost breathed an audible sigh of relief. The door to the past never really shut did it? It was always ajar, just on the other side of whatever was happening ready to open without consent.

"A long time, half my life." He answered. It seemed strange said like that, but it was the truth. He couldn't help but smile at her. "Would you like to take a closer look at my armor? He could see in her eyes that she wanted to badly. He hoped it wasn't too presumptuous to make the offer.

Half your life, and still the place where you cannot go and haven't been for that half is "home?" Just what kind of hold could such a place have over him? He probably could not remember all of it, what with foalhood years playing tricks on memory sometimes and the simple distance of time... Soon, wouldn't he have spent more than half his life here? And yet, still, the place he couldn't go back to was "home." Kara almost snorted at the thought, but held it in; they had moved on now.

Her eyes widened with surprise, then curiosity, then insatiable eagerness at his question. "You would let me?" she whispered, almost not believing her ears. The silvery steel glinted almost purple in places beneath the sunlight. So pretty...
