Minerva glanced up the blazing sun in the sky then back at her mother who was wrapped up like a little bundle in some desert clothing. Her mother had asked if she could come along on her hunts, why Minerva had no idea. Her mother had been acting odd, in her eyes anyway, lately and it was a little concerning. Was she going through some sort of midlife crisis? Her mother was still quite young, but it had been a while since she’d been with other people. Her family included, except for her. Ah well, she didn’t mind having her mother around anyway.

Esmeralda kept pace easily with Minerva as they traveled to the desert. Minerva was on the hunt for some Kiandri dragons. She’d needed to be out of the school and not on her lone island for once. Minerva had told her she would be out hunting for a few days and she’d decided to tag along. The idea of dragon hunting wasn’t the most appealing thing to her, but she did not say a word to Minerva since her daughter already knew her feelings on the subject. Plus, she was the one who had decided to tag along to begin with. Esme had wanted to see Minerva fight, wanted to see hr power, she wanted to be reminded of Ekundayo and her daughter was the last living piece of him she had left. The Dovaa fingered the red ring on her finger, even after so long she still hadn’t taken it off and probably never would. Minerva signaled for them to continue and Esme followed her lead. IT was odd that Minerva was growing so fast and into such a fine young woman. Eku would have been proud. As they approached the dragons, Minerva motioned for her to slow down.

Eyes alert, Minerva spotted her target and took off. If her mother was serious about this than she would follow behind her. She knew well and good that her mother was capable of keeping up with her; she could probably beat her in a dual until she got a bit stronger. Though for a split second Minerva glanced back just in case, just to make sure her mother was fine and she was. Except Minerva was not, Minerva stumbled on something and was sent to the ground face first into the sand. Her mother was on her side picking her up soon enough.

If Esmeralda had not been attentive she would have been unable to catch up with Minerva once the girl had taken off running. But Minerva was young and perhaps a little naïve about how to find a Kiandri dragon. She hadn’t noticed that while she was running for her target another dragon who had probably been peaceful buried under sand was in her way and she tripped on it. Esme was on her side helping Minerva stand up with one sharp yank when the Kiandri turned on them. Now they were surrounded and it was not a good thing. Both were back to back, but Esmeralda knew they would not be able to get out of this one. “Minerva, we need to get out of here.” She was not going to fight the dragons and Minerva was unable to fight both of them by herself. But what if it came down to it and Esme did have to fight? The thought made her frown, but Minerva wasn’t like that. She wouldn’t fight a useless battle or have her mother fight for her either. She knew her daughter was prideful and it was something that she would be unable to live down.

Minerva sighed and glanced at her mother with a nod. “Distraction?” The older Dovaa nodded and at the same time both threw magic in front of the Kiandri to catch them off guard. Her mother had chosen to come, but without her she probably wouldn’t have made it out alive from this one. Both took off running before the Kiandri could figure out what was happening. As if she wasn’t already sweating a lot, running through the desert at full speed was not helping. Once they were safe, they stopped and collapsed. “Thanks mom didn’t think I would have gotten out of that.”

“Don’t worry about it.” It wasn’t like she was going to tell her daughter that she owed her one. Esmeralda used her power to bring forth water from deep under the sand. Both drank slowly. “I think we should be good for one more hunt?” Two in a day would be good enough and Minerva didn’t get up right away much to the relief of Esme. She was not used to all this running and was quite tired from it. Maybe she should go out with her daughter more often, would do her some good. Plus, it seemed like it was going to be great exercise.
