Lerin adopted visiting the radaku as a daily ritual. Despite his parents' wishes for him to forgo this fascination with beasts and be more useful within the tribe, the younger Shifter disobeyed. Yes, he was well aware that most boys of his age were hunting, fighting, protecting their home, and spreading their customs, but Lerin simply did not share their interests with as much devotion as they would like. That wasn't to say he wasn't proud of who he was or the things he believed in. He simply had... differing priorities where many of the tribes rituals were concerned.

And so he found himself (Tandoori in tow) perched on a low-hanging limb and watching a pack of radaku pups below. It wasn't a large group, and consisted only of Makui's two offspring, as well as a third, from a family Lerin hadn't seen before. This particular event was of significant interest to him. The young Shifter knew of many mammals who killed pups from other families, even if they were of the same species. Particularly those who could be potential rivals for mates, food, or land.

But in the expansive area of Juahar, with each radaku pack having plenty of space for dens and hunting, this hardly seemed to be the case. The young outsider (it looked deep purple in color, if Lerin squinted hard enough through the darkness) didn't even show any degree of fear or reservation from the proud parents lingering not too far away. For a while, Lerin even entertained himself with the idea that it might have been 'adopted' into the family, or even that the parents were 'babysitting' the pup for another family. But the ideas seemed absurdly farfetched, and the Shifter lad didn't linger on them for long.

Instead, he smiled down at them, scooting the end of his brush over the thick paper in his journal as he tried to capture the three bundles of tumbling, yapping, squealing, tailed pups. Of course, the paint ended up translating mostly into blobs of nondescript color, but Lerin was pleased by this 'interaction' between him and the radaku family nonetheless, even if the pups didn't take immediate note of him.

From his place along the branches, though, he could see Makui. The older, more experienced radaku seemed much more observant, and he watched Lerin with a critical (though still patiently silent) eye. The Shifter felt confident that if he were to make any unexpected move toward the pups, that patience would come to an end. So he lingered silently, watching waiting, and expecting nothing other than to see what he was seeing now. Time ticked slowly, but moved on as one would expect.

By the time the mother radaku (who Lerin hadn't yet gifted with a name) fully made her appearance, she was dragging some many-legged carcass behind her. The young Shifter couldn't help but perch forward at the sight of her, tugging her kill nearer to where she'd made her den and closer to her pups. As she loomed within barking distance, the youngsters paused int their play. Makui's offspring galloped toward their mother, eagerly assaulting her with attention upon her approach. She cracked through her prey's exoskeleton and offered whatever goop was inside to her children. Lerin managed to be disgusted and pleased simultaneously.

With that bunch prepared to eat and then retire to the den, the boy turned his attention on the 'adopted' pup. It strolled off back through the trees. Playtime was over, and it seemed to sense that it wouldn't be welcome in the sharing of dinner. With curious amusement, Lerin decided to tail it.

He plucked Tandoori from where she sat perched at his side, shifting his kinfa companion up to rest against his shoulder before moving off along the tree limbs. The pup was not quick, and once or twice it seemed to think it was being followed and turned its gaze up to glower through the trees. Once, it even locked eyes with him, turned, and yapped. Violently, Lerin might add. Its whole frame bounced from the ground as it tried to convince him to leave with a myriad of displeased sounds. When Lerin did finally duck and recede back against the tree, it huffed and continued on.

"Cute and spunky," the Shifter chuckled. Tandoori snorted, wings fluttering in unamusement.

Feeling an emboldened stab, Lerin decided to approach the youngster, despite how it obviously had no desire to be tailed by a two-legger. He moved ahead of it, carefully watching its position. When it peered up, he hid, to avoid the brunt of the suspicion, until he was ready to reveal himself. Once he was satisfied with his location, and the pup's location, he slowly dipped downward, moving silently against the branch and slinking his way down the trunk until he revealed himself with the sound of his boot scuffing against the dirt.

Instantly, the pup was on alert. It's dark gaze landed on Lerin, and the fur along its spine bristled with anxiety. It's maw parted to release a torrent of wails, yaps, and caterwauls, and when the Shifter tried to approach, it scurried back, yowling and snarling.

"C'mon," Lerin caxed, lowering himself into a crouch and offering a hand to the pup. It reeled back and shrieked with distraught abandon, too proud to turn tail and flee, but still very, very mortified of a two-legger's presence. "I'm not going to hurt you," Lerin swore. "I just want a bit of a closer look. You've a lovely color, and I-" But really, it was no use. Even if the creature heard him over its own barks, it likely wouldn't understand. And if it did understand, it certainly wouldn't trust him any more because of it.

After a few persistent minutes, Lerin decided it was best to retreat this day. The pup had his smell, at least, and maybe it would remember it next time. And next time maybe he could have a moment with the other pups again too... SO many things to accomplish 'next time.'
