Merlinite had to wonder about the decisions some people made in their lives. Which was ironic, considering the choices he had been making of late. Maybe focusing on others and judging them was just a way for him to feel better about himself.

In any case, he was sitting on a roof top with his legs hanging over the edge, not trying to hide himself, watching a taco truck that was parked across the street.

It was the middle of the night but the truck had its gate open and smoke was coming out of it, indicating that they were still cooking in there. They were parked out in front of a bar, but was this a good business strategy for them? Wait for drunken idiots to wander out of the bar to get a late night taco?

It was better than just closing up, he supposed, but not by much. From what he could see, no one was coming out of the bar.

This was a pointless waste of his time, but with everything that was going on, he felt like he needed it. He just wanted to turn his brain off for a few.

A deep grumble echoed through the quiet night and Ubasti clutched her stomach. She`d skipped dinner to avoid having to eat with her father who had made the outrageous demand of having his mother cook for him food from back home so he didn’t have to suffer the food here. Nailah had been so angry she`d stormed out of the home without grabbing anything for the road. So here she was, freezing, hungry and very unhappy about having to patrol even though she knew it was her duty to do so. Summer certainly couldn`t get here any quicker for her.

Still, she had to keep patrol and that`s what she would do. That was until Ubasti felt a very familiar presence in passing that had her pausing. Head tilted she looked on the rooftops until she spotted the figure in person and headed that way. It had been a little while since she’d bumped into him. Ubasti tried to hide herself as best trying to catch Merlinite by surprise. She moved as quietly as she could too, hoping the snow wouldn`t crunch too hard as she landed on the same roof as him. Hands up in claws a large smile was plastered on her face as she yelled out.

“BOO!” Wheather or not she actually scared him or had gotten caught didn’t matter. Ubasti began to laugh.

Merlinite felt an aura approaching, but did not expect the source of it to actually leap out at him. So he did jump, despite himself, when she tried to scare him.

Which caused him to fall off the roof.

"Yarrr!"

He was not trying to sound like a pirate, but it was the only sound he could get out before he dropped off the roof. Thankfully, he landed lightly below, since it was not exactly a skyscraper, and looked up at his previous seat in irritation. He spotted Ubasti, though, and a wave of relief came over him. It was always good to see a friendly face. If that was something he could consider her.

They were kind of friends by now, right?

"Thanks for that, I didn't want to sit up there anyway," he called, feigning more grumpiness than he really felt. He would make her come down to him now, out of stubbornness.

“Oh my god!” Ubatsi covered her mouth as she watched Merlinite fall off the roof; she ran over and looked over to make sure he was okay. Which he seemed to be albeit a little grumpy, but that was regular good old Merlinite. Seeing that he was okay and not injured made her laugh out loud for a few good minutes. So much so she was clutching her stomach until it was so painful she had to stop herself from laughing. When Ubasti had finally calmed herself down a bit she looked over the roof again. “Don’t be so grumpy, I’m coming down!”

And with that Ubasti leaped down herself, landing just as softly as him. “Didn’t think I’d run into you.” She gave him one good look over. “You were so open I just couldn’t resist.” She teased him lightly. Though she was glad she’d ran into him, a friendly face once in a while never hurt anyone. Though her nose soon caught a whiff of something that smelled mouth-watering and her searched for its source. A taco truck. Ubasti’s stomach grumbled loudly to show how unhappy it was and she clutched it wishing it would just stop for a second.

“Ah, I’m kind of hungry.” Ubasti said apologetically. If Merlinite hadn’t heard that then it was a miracle. Maybe she’d grab something. “Are you hungry? Because I’m about to head on over to that truck.”

Merlinite waited for her, but he was not feeling particularly angry, though he wanted to be because it would suit the situation better. Instead, he was just glad for the company, and was thankful she popped up. Even if it resulted in him falling off a roof.

"I'm hungry too," he said, after a moment of petulant silence. "Yeah, let's go get some food."

He did not care if they took it or paid for it, at this point. As long as he was not killing anyone, he was trying to find a small amount of peace. The longer he was in the Negaverse, the more lines he would have to draw, and he still had not decided if he wanted to join the white moon or not. It was only something he had discussed with senshi, and though he wanted some Chaos perspective, it was not the safest thing to bring up in conversation.

"What are you out and about doing, anyway? Besides making me miserable."

Good, so they both could get food and Ubasti didn`t have to stuff face in front of him by herself. Usually she didn`t buy things as Ubasti. She would have powered down to enjoy the meal, but she couldn`t here. Not with Merlinite hanging around. It was just a little odd. Plus, she`d never told anyone about any of her identities and she certainly wasn`t about to with someone from the Negaverse. Maybe she ought to ask how that kind of thing worked, if someone find out did she have to kill them? Ubasti didn’t really like that perspective nor wanted to kill someone for that reason.

As they approached the truck, Ubasti picked out what she wanted. She ordered a fish taco with an ice tea, paid and then moved aside to let Merlintie order. She didn’t want to answer his question until the cook was busy with their order. So she leaned against the truck and crossed her arms waiting for the guy to move away from the window. “I didn’t feel like staying home.” Oh wait, she was pretty sure she wasn’t supposed to talk about that kind of stuff either. “I mean, I was out patrolling you know. Regular day at work.”

“What about you Mr. Grumpy pants?” She could have sworn it had looked like he as sulking on that roof top, but she couldn’t exactly just come out and say ‘hey you looked kind of down, what’s up?’ now could she. The cook came back with their food and Ubasti grabbed her’s to get a table. She ignored the weird looks she kept getting from the cook, Merlinite at least fit in more with their surroundings than she did. Her outfit looked like she was right out from some Egyptian movie or something.

Merlinite decided to go the placid route as well, ordering his food, four of the spiciest tacos he could get, and caused no trouble with it. He looked at Ubasti and shook his head.

"I'm not grumpy," he said, wrinkling his nose in irritation.

Realizing his protest was futile when he was, in fact, clearly very grumpy, he decided she could keep giving him a nickname. It was suited well enough and he had been called worse things.

Once they got their food, he followed her to a table before he tried to broach the topic.

"I've just been having a hard time recently, I guess. I'm doing a lot of stuff that I don't... want to do, and it's making me wonder... I guess about my place in the Negaverse, and if I'm... doing the right stuff." He shook his head, trying to act as nonchalant about it as possible. Everyone had their doubts, right? Nothing to tell General Painite about, anyway, or get anyone worked up about it. He had made no decisions yet...

Ubasti listened as Merlinite explained his predicament. She understood the underlying thought well enough. He was thinking about switching sides. Now Ubasti had never thought about switching sides, didn’t know how it happened, didn’t even know if they could really. She didn’t see the appeal in doing so either. You fought people for years and then tried to join their side? She certainly wouldn’t be very happy about but she didn’t know how that kind of thing went down with the White Moon Court. She wasn’t sure if she could help him out, but she’d listen because they were sort of friends.

Would they still be friends if he did jump ship?

“I don’t know anything about the Negaverse,” Ubasti admitted between bits of taco. “Nor do I know anything about places on different sides.” She took a breath and decided to ask him. Face to face, no bullshit. “Do you have senshi friends? White Moon Court senshi friends.” She stared at him because she wanted the truth and she’d hoped that as a sort of neutral party he’d tell her. Or maybe he wouldn’t. But she was curious of his answer in the matter. If he had many more friends in the White Moon than the negaverse it would explain his feelings.

"The Negaverse is kind of a nightmare. I mean. I knew coming in it was going to be evil, but... I guess I've just seen what Chaos ends up doing to someone who has been on the team for years. She's been a General for so long I don't think she remembers how to be human any more."

He shook his head and sighed, looking at his food and pondering if he was as hungry as he thought. There were few things that could get in between him and his food, though, and even his anxiety was not enough. He ate one of the tacos contentedly, surprised by how good the food was.

"I have some senshi friends, yeah. I don't know if they're friends, some of them. I don't know. It's weird."

He supposed she was not liable to go running to the negaverse to tattle on him, right? He had no reason to think she would, anyway, and he wanted to trust more people. Anyway, the more he thought about things, the more he needed to get them out into the open, so he did not feel like he was on the verge of exploding all the time.

"But they weren't like, telling me to go to their team or anything. Hell, I don't even like knights. It's just. I guess I'm just scared, I don't know."

Well that was a scary thought. The Negaverse was the Negaverse though and like he`d said, he had known what he was getting into. “Do Negaverse agents have the choice of joining or not?” Ubasti didn’t think she had the choice, but what if she had? No. The Dark Mirror Court was her only home, she would never change. Then again to her the DMC didn’t sound as scary or as evil as the Negaverse. “What would happen if you left the Negaverse?” He seemed indecisive about the choice though, maybe in a month she’d be meeting a new Merlinite.

“I guess it’s weird because there are so many sides and no one knows who to trust.” Ubasti finished up her taco and sighed content and happy to finally have something in her stomach. “So you’d become a knight?” So the WMC had knights and the Negaverse were…corrupted knights? “Well, I can’t really help you with any advice. I don’t know much about knights, I’ve never ran into one before. But you should do what you think is right for yourself. Make your own choices; don’t let anyone else take that away from you.” That was the kind of advice she’d wished she’d received about her family.

“And whatever side you do decide to go on, we’ll still be friends.” She grinned at him. “I just might have to beat you up a little more if you’re a knight.”

"Not really. I mean, I guess it's mostly just if they want you to join, they make you join. It sounds good at the time. But I know they force people to join, too, just by corrupting them. I mean, once the Chaos is there, you're stuck, so it doesn't really matter to them if you agree to it or not."

He had been corrupted willingly, in a way. He had managed to look impressive in a contest, and they saw potential in him. He had been corrupted as a result of being devious and ruthless in a simple activity, and he thought at the time that it would be his big break.

In a way, it had been. He had been able to do so much more than he ever had before. But...

The costs were beginning to add up.

"I'm trying to figure things out, but it's hard to know if I'm just panicking or if I really do want to... you know. Get out of the Negaverse. But I think Painite would kill me either way, if she knew I was even thinking about it. But hey, it's not really something I wanted to bog you down with, you know? I just needed to... talk, I guess. Feels like all I'm doing."

“I’ve heard of that.” Ubasti had only heard quiet rumours about it; she had never actually seen it herself. It made her wonder why force someone to join if they could turn on you? Seemed more practical if they wanted to join you by freewill, granted joining the ‘evil’ side might not be so appealing to some and the Negaverse wasn’t known to for its gentleness either. Maybe it was better if Merlinite switched sides, not that she would voice that opinion. In her mind, it was obvious here that he wasn’t entirely happy with his fellow officers. Ubasti did not know though whole story o it was hard to make a judgment call.

“Painite, I’ve heard of her but never seen her.” With a name like that, Ubasti was darn sure she did not want to meet her either. “You’re not bogging me down. I am not in the Negaverse or with the Knights and in any case it’s not like you can really talk to anyone in the Negaverse about it now can you.” He had said himself Painite would kill him if she knew he was even thinking about it. Would she hunt him down and kill Merlinite if he switched over? “I’m sure if you just got stronger than her, Painite wouldn’t be able to touch you.”

Merlinite nodded his head. He imagined it was probably a luckier place to be, knowing enough about Painite to stay away from her, but not having met her before. He wished he could have been in that kind of a position for longer, before he stupidly inserted himself into the middle of all this terrible mess.

But there was no going back at this point.

"No, I can't really talk about it to anyone. Not that I have any real friends in the Negaverse. I guess I don't really know how to connect to people or... something. I dunno. I never cared before, but I mean. I am glad I can talk to you, at least."

He was not so sure about getting stronger than Painite, though. She was a General, and had been one for a lot longer than he had even been in the Negaverse. She was so steeped in Chaos, it was all she had. How she had not been consumed completely, he did not know. Maybe she had, and that was what they were seeing now.

"If I could get stronger than her, yeah, I'd be alright. I'm not sure I can though. Hey, if I do change sides, or even if I don't and things get bad in the Negaverse for me... I mean... you'll still stick around, right?" He knew that one of his other close friends was worried about losing him if he purified, and now he was wondering about what else he might lose.

“Well you must have friends as your other self?” Yes Merlinite could be a bit of a grumpy butt but he wasn’t all that mean. He’d helped her train after all and he’d never been mean to her every time they’d met. By now Ubasti did consider him her friend, otherwise she wouldn’t be sitting here having tacos while discussing some pretty personal things with him. She doubted too that if he didn’t consider her a friend he wouldn’t be sharing. “You know, sometimes we just have to get away from our family because it doesn’t work anymore. I had to do that as my other self.

She’d moved to Destiny City after all because of the fighting with her father and that’s where she’d found her real family.

“Well if you ever need to train, you know who to call!” She grinned at him, she was sure he would be able to beat her someday. Otherwise, Ubasti had a feeling this Painite wouldn’t stop chasing him and it would be to either corrupt him or kill him. His next question moved her mind away from Painite and surprised her. “Yeah, of course. We’re friends right? And friends stick together no matter what.” She grinned at him then. “If you do switch sides you’ll be the first knight I know. That’s kinda cool.”

Tagging from work! Sorry if it's spacey/short/weird!

Merlinite did not answer for a long moment, shaking his head slowly as he turned the thought over. Did he have friends as a civilian? No. No her did not. He was too focused on getting what he wanted, no one else had ever managed to matter to him. Not like the people he was meeting while powered up.

But things had shifted since he started, and people he never thought would register to him were now becoming more than important. They were his friends, even his family at this point. And that was the weirdest thing of all, considering he had no real family and never really wanted any.

He did offer her a timid smile when she answered his own question, though. It was uncharacteristic of him, looking nervous and relieved at once, but for a moment it was there. He chased it away with a much more confident half grin, nodding his head curtly.

"I figured as much. I knew deep down you could not resist my charms. Well, that's good, at least. I don't know if the knight thing is going to happen, but I mean... it's a comfort knowing you won't hate me for it if it does. Uh. Anyway."

Too sappy, but something told him if he did not tell the people that mattered just how much so, they might never really find out. He did not like the sinking feeling in his chest, but chalked it up to nerves of the unknown. Whatever lay ahead of him, he would have to face it as bravely as he knew how.
