Ever had time to kill, and energy to spare, and since he didn't know what to do with it, that meant that he ended up here: the training fields, partnerless, absently swiping his dagger across the belly of a dummy and trying to bring some strength up into his arms and his core. He would never, he knew, have the abs that seemed to be otherwise standard issue at deus, but he would at least be happy with -- well. Losing some of the tightness around the long scar on his abdomen. Being a little less beanstalk, if only a little. Maybe then the island would be a bit more accommodating. Of course, he'd been here only twenty minutes and already Ever was bored of this: straightening up and blowing out a breath, eyes distracted as he carried out a quiet conversation with the voice in the back of his head.

It had been a while since Jake had gotten a spar in, and he knew he desperately needed the practice. It probably wouldn't hurt to hit the training dummies, but maybe he'd get lucky and find someone to spar. A moving target was always better than an immobile one.
And so, it was with this thought he left this room, stretching a bit before he arrived at the training field. To his luck, it seemed someone WAS there. Unfortunately, it wasn't someone he knew (then again, he hadn't really associated with a lot of hunters), but he hoped they'd be up for some training.
"Hey! You need a training partner?"

There was no reply for a long moment, and it might have seemed like Ever was simply ignoring him -- until, all at once, he clicked into focus, half-turning in place to blink at Jake. In the back of his mind, Amory laughed, but didn't try to help. At least Ever didn't say are you talking to me? Instead he figured it out, offering a brief flash of a smile, somewhat uncertain, adjusting the dagger in one hand and the sheath of his weapon in the other as he considered. "Uh. Probably. I can kick the dummy's a** but most enemies don't just stand there and let you wail on them." Another little pause. He de-summoned his weapon so he could offer Jake a hand. "I don't think I know you? Ever Ambrodiel."

At first, Jake wasn't sure if the hunter heard him, and was about to ask again when he turned.
He couldn't help but chuckle at Ever's comment.
"That's true. If only it were that easy. And Jake. Jake Cross. Nice to meet you."
He took his hand and shook it.

"How have I not met you?" His surprise, at least, seemed genuine -- even if his tone was idly teasing, flirting in an instinctive and thoughtless sort of way as Ever took his hand back to sweep hair back out of his face and asses Jake more thoroughly. It left him smiling, and shrugging, easy enough. "I think you'll kick my a** if I agree to a fight....but that's just fine, honestly."

Sadly, Jake didn't pick up on the subtle flirting, and self-consciously ran a hand through his hair. It wasn't a new thing at how much he stood out with brightly-dyed hair and coloured contacts, and at times, he wondered why he still bothered. Though, it had become such a habit by now that if he stopped, no one would probably recognize him.
"I don't get out much, I guess."
He gave a half-hearted laugh and let his hand drop.
"Ha, I doubt it, but I can give you a handicap if you want."

"Either way." He blinked up at Jake and then shook himself out with a breath of a sigh: scraping pale hair back out of his face and giving up on the flirting, since it was like teasing a brick wall. It was only fun when people reacted, no matter how they reacted. There was still a smile ghosting around Ever's expression, but it was more distracted, now. "What did you have in mind?"

If only he knew... if only he knew.
A certain hunter could testify just how oblivious he could be.
"Hmm, I could always hold back, or not use fear attacks."
To be honest, his fear attacks usually didn't make much of a difference, and he rarely ever used his artifact anymore... unless the spar got out of hand. Ever seemed like a decent guy though, so he hoped that wouldn't be the case.

"It's just practice, right? It's not..." Ever hesitated, blew out a sigh, and summoned his weapon back easily: shaking out the length of chain that connected wickedly-sharp dagger to the heavy, blunt shape of its sheath. After a brief pause, he gestured for Jake to do the same. "It's not about winning or losing. So whatever you need to do." [A.V.] Honestly, if you just wanna straight spar, that's fine too! It'll just be shorter that way, probably. XD

Jake opened his mouth as if to say something, but then closed it and smiled.
"Alright. I won't hold back then."
He summoned his own weapons as well, which were a pair of dual blades strapped to his forearm.
"Whenever you're ready."

There was a time when Ever would have hesitated before taking a swing at a stranger, but after more than six months at deus, that part had been thoroughly and completely expunged. He didn't even wait a moment before stepping in, to drag his blade [alarmingly sharp, yes] along Jake's shield, near one arm. Even weedy as he was, even looking like a sharp breeze could blow him away, Ever hit hard. HP: 50/50 Charge: 1/3 DMG: 9

There was always something exhilarating about a good fight, and Jake couldn't help but grin at the first strike. The fear shield would prevent physical harm, but he saw that Ever meant business. It'd only be fair if he gave it his all too.
Of course, he needed to warm up first, and he did so by retaliating, blade against blade.

When had he actually started to enjoy the physicality of a fight? Ever grinned back as Jack caught his blade, the pair of them grinding together -- and then reached out carefully to smack him with the sheath while he was distracted. It was useful to have a two-part weapon. HP: 48/50 Charge: 2/3 DMG: 9

Either he was rusty, or Ever was just really good. It was probably a bit of both. The sheath had caught him off-guard, and Jake blinked as he was pushed back. He had seen his fair share of unique weapons, and it never ceased to amaze him. However, he couldn't afford to let himself be distracted, no matter how impressed he was.
And so, he retaliated with a strike of his own, putting his arm into the thrust.
HP: 42/60

"Ow, s**t," Ever said, halfway to laughing -- and, in this moment, a hand came up to the spot where Jake had slammed into his shield, a dull, thudding ache starting. It'd fade to nothing but a faint bruise, certainly, but it was still enough to slow him down as he swung back. "You hit hard, when you hit..." HP: 37/50 Charge: 3/3 DMG: 2
