User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Reconnaissance Mission S86
Location: The Sahara Desert (North Africa)
Images:: x, x, xx
General debriefing: The Sahara has been a strong hold of the Horseman Clans for millenia. Current events have created a demand for more widespread observation of the area, as well as a need for greater experience with the region among Hunters and trainees.

Duties include: Upkeep of base. Acclimatization. Regular patrols. Observe and record any aberrations found within the area. Capture specimens. Destroy threats to the human populace. Flagging A and S class threats for special dispatch.

Bring supplies for at least a three day stay as a base. Modified desert uniforms and gear are available from the Quartermaster. Extra charged runes are recommended.

* C class difficulty level (must have a team of three to five, at least one of them must be an intermediate trainee)

MECHANICS

* MECHANICS: RP assembling a team, as necessary, before heading towards the Lighthouse for Reconnaissance Mission S86. You will roll at least 1 daily prompt for each of the hunters on the team, unless the mission ends early due to injury or further enemy interference.

Daily Prompts:
roll 1 d100

1: The ground shakes beneath your feet and cracks begin to appear in the distance when out of the sand a massive sand worm the size of the Empire State Building bursts out. Between its many segments you see tiny flashes of light that upon (dangerously) closer inspection appear to be suits of armour and weapons. Weapons with glowing runic marks. It towers above you and then smashes down upon the camp, destroying it easily. Roll 2d20 to determine your injuries. Your options are to either portal home and report, or stay and fight the creature known as The Armoury (HP: 9999)

2 - 10: Nothing happens.

11 - 20: An unusually large swarm of insects pass by the camp. They seem to pause and hover, blanketing the camp for several moments before moving on.

21 - 30: You find a stone stairway that leads to vine-covered underground temple, red flowers blooming all along its walls. You begin to hear voices, both strange and familiar. Should you get injured at any point during this, the vines will enter your body and begin growing inside your hunter. They will grow more paranoid as the days pass as well as hallucinating, the vines becoming visible under their skin after one day, and then blooming the next. Bringing them back to Deus will end their part in the mission, as they will need a two day day infirmary stay to be rid of the plants. A flower or vine-like scar will remain on their person.

31 - 60: Horsemen appear and attack your camp or patrol group.
((These can be either player character horseman you invite to battle (which will make your base RP points PVP points and worth 2 instead of 1 rp point) or you can battle against an automob who you will be able to possibly capture.))
Horseman AutoMob
(clan/appearance/name are your choice, though do follow the horseman guidelines for such)
HP: 60
Auto Damage: 5
Special: Should you bring their HP to either 0 exactly or 1, then you may viably capture them and bring them back to Deus. (Bonus Pay: $3000) otherwise they simply escape or dissipate.

61 - 70: Nothing happens

71 - 80: You discover an underground oasis. It's very enjoyable.

81 - 90: You fall through the sand into a stone room. Along the floor are piles of body parts. One of the piles begins to move, then several more. Roll 1d20 to escape back up the way you came or destroy a wall with your weapon. You must roll 11 or higher to succeed. Failure causes you to be mobbed by the creatures. Before you pass out, you notice their features changing to match your own. When you wake up, you are naked and alone except for your weapon's totem. You either escape under your own power or are rescued by your teammates.

91: Nothing happens.

92: You're attacked by figures of bone and rotting flesh, they move both mindlessly and as a unit, as it they were puppets.
Corpse Mob:
HP:30
Auto Damage: 3
Special: Every time you miss the auto damage is 6 instead of 3. When they are defeated they simply collapse into parts.

93: Nothing happens.

94 - 99: A sandstorm locks you into the base for the rest of the day. No more prompts may be rolled for that day.

100: Moths shot through with silvery veins begin to form a female figure. (post quote lizbot)

* 3 mission reward points for completing this successfully

Jake realized it had been... quite some time since he had actually left the island, or done... anything productive for that matter. Heck, he couldn't even remember when he had last left the island. Mission reports were great and all, but he was starting to think he was getting rusty, especially since the last few spars he had with Sherry he was... pretty sure he lost them all. Then again, she WAS getting stronger...

Really? I thought you'd be saying something like "it's too dangerous"
<... Jake. You're not a child. You're a full hunter now, and besides, I trust you understand the implications of your actions affect not only you, but those around you.>
Jake sighed. He didn't need to be reminded. His stupid mistakes nearly gotten Chester put out of commission, along with getting himself and others killed. He wouldn't, COULDN'T make the same mistakes again.

... ********, he totally forgot about Caelius. It was a miracle he hadn't been demoted already.
Well, it couldn't hurt to see what was available, so he decided to get changed and head out.

I hope this mission is ok! It seemed fun, but if too difficult, I can swap it out! We could also bring more people for this one if you'd like o v o

For the rest of them, it wasn't half so complicated: as soon as Jake put the request in, he'd get his team, and somehow Lukas would be a part of it. He'd arrive at the portal well before his summons email told him he needed to, then regret the decision to be early -- because this didn't really seem like the kind of place where suck ups and teacher's pets would be greatly appreciated.

So he arrived. Looked up at the lighthouse that held their exit to the rest of the world. And he left.

He'd come back five minutes after he was supposed to meet the other two hunters assigned to explore the sahara, with his things in a bag under one arm and a soda from a vending machine in the other hand, working his way through it slowly.

[A.V.]
I hope it's okay I moved things along!!
also, would you mind using a different green? QQ I can't read yours [had to C&P your post into a text doC!!] YAY TY!!

Summons to a mission. Same old, same old. She was pleasantly pleased to see that it was with Jake, though perhaps he'd requested her. Good. He needed someone around to make sure he didn't die.

For her part, Sherry was right on time. Desert gear checked out, bag slung over her shoulder, and goggles on her head (headband style). She'd even worn her new boots, bought JUST for desert outings. She was pretty sure she was ready.

And she waited. She trusted Jake to be on time, or nearly, and properly prepared. The other person, well. It was her full intention to give a warm greeting to the third member of their party the moment she met them. Starting off on the right foot, and all that. So, when the young man with a bag and a soda arrived Sherry smiled and waved. "Sahara mission? Over here!"

To be honest, he wasn't sure how he felt about doing a Sahara mission, especially after all the mishaps they've had.

Jake gave a half-hearted smile. It was reassuring to know that she would be there, but also... he wasn't quite sure how he felt about putting her in harm's way... again. There was also that third member, Lukas. He wondered who he was.

It seemed his question would be answered when he arrived at the portal later with runic gears and bandages, spotting Sherry and another hunter.
"Sherry! And... Lukas, I presume?"

Lukas's expression, at least, was guarded: not afraid but skeptical, uncertain, but there and ready at least. He blinked at the pair of them and then nodded, holding out a hand toward Jake first, unsure what else to say or do at this point.

"Lukas, yes. Do you know the details of what we're doing here?" He hesitated a little, shifted. "...honestly, I haven't been off island since I...woke up."

Sherry looked to Jake. He was in charge here, this was his thing. At least, his name was at the top of the list, so that meant he was totally in charge.

However, Sherry did have a few words about the Sahara...and the fact that poor little Lukas had not been off the island before. She gave the trainee a level look.

"Oh, so you've not been awake long? I...I am sorry this gets to be your first mission. The Sahara is a terrible place full of sand. It's horrible. Sand will get everywhere- boots, clothes, eyes- you'll be washing it out of your stuff for weeks. There might be bugs. There might be monsters under that sand. There might be bodies rotting in the sun. It's hot. The Sahara sucks." She smiled. "It was my first mission, too. But that was a cleanup and it was awful. This," she gestured in the direction of the portal, "says 'reconnaissance' so hopefully we are just doing some basic observing and scouting. Probably nothing major will happen at all."

And then she looked at both of the boys. "But whatever you do, don't go running off alone. Alone gets you dead. Or worse."

Sherry nodded once, then turned and started towards the portal. She hated the Sahara. Dreaded it even. Best to suck it up and get on with things, though. Delaying the inevitable was just that...delaying it.

Jake took his hand and shook it, offering the trainee a simple smile.
However, when he mentioned he had not been off the island once yet, Jake's smile fell. For the Sahara to be his very first mission... s**t.
Well, Sherry pretty much summed it up with that lovely description.

"Um, yah, it's not a pleasant place. I'm sorry you got stuck with this for your first mission, but like Sherry said, hopefully it won't be too bad. Recon usually means more surveying and less engagement with the enemy. Let's hope we get lucky."
Though, as a hunter, luck could only go so far.

He'd been friendly enough, easygoing, distracted by his soda -- but something about their mutual tone of voice made Lukas's eyes shut down and his smile go a bit more pasted-on. A mask instead of an emotion. He let it go with a shrug, but if they could read the signs, there was something sharp about the way he moved when he followed, finishing his soda and leaving the empty can beside the portal in the light house.

Lukas really didn't like being talked down to. Even if they were right and even if he was new enough not to know what to expect.

"None of this sounds like anything unexpected. And it definitely beats paperwork." He raised a hand in a brief gesture to Sherry, and it wasn't friendly now. It was sharp, and straightforward, halfway to a shrug. She could go through first. He'd follow.

[A.V.]
Whatever! I don't mind the little introduction bits. :D

A strange sense of relief washed over Sherry at Lukas’s words. “Not unexpected?” Tension she hadn’t even realized she’d had left her shoulders. She’d run into too many trainees that expected sparkles and rainbows on these missions, and the Sahara was the last place anyone should expect anything good. “I am glad to hear that.”

Even as she said it another kind of worry began to gnaw at her. Something about his movement or the look he gave her. She’d spent her whole life wanting people to like her, and she was decent at picking up on signs that they might not. Had she been too pushy? Too much too soon?

The voice in head was as chastising as it was lazy.
Sherry stopped just before the portal. She glanced at Jake. No, no. She wasn’t going to lean on him for anything here- she’d been the one messing up obviously, there was no reason Lukas and Jake couldn’t get along.

“I’m sorry,” she said with a tiny smile to Lukas. “I seem to have gotten ahead of myself. Sherry Greyson, Life. It’s nice to meet you.”

She inhaled and then continued, “Let’s get this started.” Through the portal she went.

Once on the other side, the outpost was given a quick look over. Notes left by other groups double checked, supplies stashed, and things generally looked over. All in all, they’d only been there about 5 minutes before Sherry turned to the boys. “I am going to go do a quick perimeter check. I’ll be taking a headset with me.”

And slip out the door she did.

Really, she just wanted a moment or three to herself. Because good job, Sherry. Good job getting off on the wrong foot. If Lukas didn’t like her or had a horrible time it was obviously her fault. Of course it was. Well, barring enemy disturbances. Those weren’t her fault. But everything else was.
The desert itself, hot and sunny and sandy as usual, seemed normal. Normal enough Sherry let herself focus on the few short minutes of interaction she’d had with Lukas. Every word, every gesture, everything. Had she been too blunt? Maybe too cold? Jake was usually the brash one, the awkward one. But today it had been her.

Armagnac said, as if that explained everything. Maybe that was it, though. Maybe the stress of the Sahara was throwing her off. Great. Lukas deserved better than that, and honestly, a Hunter who couldn’t handle a little pre-mission stress was pretty much a failure.

Sherry would just have to own up and fix it. Apologize for being brash, make no excuses, and hope the next three days weren’t horrible. Maybe she and Lukas would get along. Or at least Jake and Lukas. Maybe-

The stone outcropping wasn’t really out of the ordinary. She’d passed several so far. But this one…something about the way the shadows fell caused her pause. Maybe she should check it out? Because those shadows there looked a little like…yes. Yes that was a cave. Sherry looked all around the rocks. No symbols she could see, no signs of Horsemen. But the stone just inside the cave looked a little bit like too flat to be natural. Sherry decided to take a peek inside.

First step, second step… Stairs. Definitely stairs. Sherry blinked, the cavern made darker since her eyes hadn’t adjusted yet. She probably should go get the boys. They needed to see if this was noted in the maps of the area, and she shouldn’t be going down strange staircases alone.

She took another step down, just trying to get a sense of the place. If it really was nothing, then she’d seem like an even bigger idiot than she already did. She didn’t want that. Just a little farther… another step… She shouldn’t have worn her new boots. She should have watched her footing better. A bit of uneven step made for a shaky foothold and suddenly Sherry’s balance was trying to escape her. She didn’t recover it. Instead, the little Life Hunter tumbled down the stairs.

Round and round, banging this, bouncing off that, until she landed with a solid thud on stone floor. Something under her hand felt very plantlike.

But uh. Day 1 roll. : D I am leaving it open you guys can either just have more chatter or you can join in on this? Most of the prompts seem to be ok for solo or group? (She doesn't need rescuing, but she can drag your hunters over for investigating if you want?)
I don't want to rush things we can have interactions between rolls to ok. ;; I like RP <3

Jake, on the other hand, hadn't noticed anything, and only laughed at Lukas' comment.
"That's true. I'd rather be fighting grotesque beasts than do paper work."
Heck, he'd rather do anything BUT paperwork, because missions reports sucked. Except maybe minipet duty. Minipet duty was the absolute worse.

At least he wouldn't have to worry about that anytime soon. He went in the portal not long after Sherry, letting out a heavy sigh at his surroundings. Sand, death, and doom. Nothing good ever came out of the Sahara, and he was just kidding himself to think otherwise. However, he found it odd that he didn't see Sherry. It hadn't taken him THAT long to go in...

Jake paused to stare at some abnormally large swarm hovering around the camp, but nothing about them seemed out of the ordinary.
Might as well move on.

Lukas avoided them not out of anger now, but befuddlement -- confused over the fact that someone would so quickly cave into apology, for such a small slight. In his world, it would have gone silent and dangerous, the pair of the circling each other. Pranks that turned mean, perhaps. But apologies? What was that all about?

So he waved them off like it didn't matter and just did his duties, patrolling carefully, staying close to the camp. He didn't want to get stuck out alone when trouble hit.

So, of course, he was.

The aftermath of the bugs left things far too quiet, which meant Lukas was left blinking in a puzzled sort of way at the sudden silence, unsure if he should be worried, but unsettled all the same. It was as he pondered this trouble that something came over the horizon toward them, and his concern shot to the forefront. He fumbled for his headset.

"Something's here, I think." Lukas tried for calm, but it came out clipped, nervous, and then went silent as they attacked.

Sherry was making her way back towards camp when Lukas made his call for help. She was, for the most part, fine. A little dinged up. Shaken, though. The minute she'd realized what she was looking at...those vines, those flowers, she'd gotten the hell out of there. She was going to have to thoroughly inspect herself when she got back to base. She'd scuffed her knee and her elbow- how bad she didn't know. But she knew what those vines did. She remembered those.

The call drew her attention out of her own head. "Hang on. I'm almost back! Jake?"

Thankfully, Jake hadn't wandered too far, and doubled back as soon as he heard Lukas' voice.
"I got this!"
He swung the bag he brought around, shoving his arm into it to pull out a pair of daggers. s**t, just their luck. Horsemen.
Considering they lost the element of surprise, the most important thing was to make sure they were prepared.
Making his way to Lukas, he slammed the runics into the ground, watching as they pulsated slightly. It wouldn't be extremely helpful, but better safe than sorry.
"You ok?"

"I'm good --" He drew in a breath, flinching as Jake brought the barrier around him and then regretting giving in to the urge: it was a certain degree of weakness that made him frown as he straightened again. It clicked, at least, what had happened, the great snake in the back of his mind b confused ringing the barrier into view, and so instead of racing into danger, he lingered for the moment.

Lukas had been practicing so much on the training fields that when he let his weapon loose from his hand, it threw straight and true -- striking the horseman neatly in one shoulder.

Not that it slowed her down. She came at him swinging, and again he flinched, immediately cursing himself after.
