The first game, or game series, that I'll talk about is the Halo series. Note*: All information on the weapons and equipment used in this thread are not just coming from me. Some of the information has been researched to give you full detail of an item.

Types Excluding the usual Assault, Battle, and Sniping weapons, there are four other types of weapon styles in the game that one could use.
-Explosives and/or large scale weapons: In the series this included a) missiles, b) Nuclear Weapons, and c) the Halo Array.
Missiles are meant to be fired from some type of launcher. Normally they have a tracking and guiding function. If you want to know how a missile works in real life, you can click here.
*Note: Now if my memory serves me right...I don't believe that we used missiles as a personal weapon in the game (unless you are the type of person to count rockets as a missile but there is a difference. There may have been times where in the campaigns, as the Chief we launched missiles but that's a different story.
Nuclear weapons in the Halo series is a type of artillery that uses nuclear fission and/or nuclear fusion as it's source of energy. It would be like using TONS of TNT, but to make an explosion as big as you could imagine (to make a ground range of 0.4km explosion would be 1 kilotons of TNT yield; source: Wiki)
-Grenades: Grenades in the game are made frequently available whenever you down an enemy or whether or not the map has some lying around. Some grenades can stick, some can stick and shoot out spikes, and some are just stronger than others.
The different types of grenades that Halo has to offer are as follows:
Grenades of the USNC: -Fragmentation Grenades (a.k.a., frag) This is the standard grenade of the USNC. The Frag grenade is a High-Explosive Dual-Purpose grenade. That means that it's designed to be effective against infantry and lightly armored vehicles.
This grenade has a hard metal casing, and is meant to break apart into small, regular shards meaning that the surface patterns of the grenade are meant to explode in a consistent and reliable pattern, hence the square like surface patterns on the grenade.
Inside the casing is a charge of ComL high-explosive fitted with a mechanical primer, so that when it detonates it shatters the grenade's case and sends the shrapnel flying at very high speeds.
In all of the Halo games, frags must hit the ground first before exploding. Maybe there may have been times when you have thrown a frag and you notice that it wouldn't detonate in mid-air, or that it bounced off of the wall or a rock first and then explode. This was a safety feature that was made in order to protect the person throwing, so that it would not go off in the person's hand. Hence the reason why you can cook a grenade for so long in the Halo games.
