Twitter had turned out to be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it was always great fun to read, but then you learn things that left you with uncomfortable viewpoints. There were people on the island who would try to murder their fellow hunters.
Yes. His weapon didn't sound so surprised.
Joy shuddered, unnerved. And before she knew it, she was at the sparring fields. The shovel was summoned and shouldered by the handle as Joy set about searching for someone to face off against. "Hey, you up for a quick spar?" The grin on her face seemed a little more forced than normal, but she was speaking with a stranger so they could probably just write it off as nerves.

"Um." Radley rubbed her arm nervously, frowning slightly. "I don't really want to hurt you." The young trainee had honestly been watching and mentally taking notes to herself of things to do to get better, when she was singled out and asked to spar. It will be good for you. Learn combat firsthand. This will be your first spar, so don't feel bad if you lose.Fingering the bracelet on her wrist, she thought for a moment, reflecting on Eilissandra's words. She said if. Not when... which meant that her partner had a little faith in her. "Are... are you sure?" Radley looked up at the other trainee.

Joy glanced down at her body, well, she had an impressive number of scars but she would be the first to admit she'd gotten them through biking mishaps rather than sparring sessions.
"No worries on that front, I am way not afraid of pain," she assured the other woman. "'Nga pala, I'm Ligaya. But you can call me Joy."

"Radley." She would have said it was a pleasure, but she wasn't all that keen on fighting in the first place. Of course, being a Hunter meant that she had no choice in the matter, so she'd just have to make due as best she could. "I've... never actually fought yet," Radley admitted, drawing her weapon and holding it defensively. "But I will try my best."

"Good to meetcha, Radley, can I call you Rads?" Joy grinned and offered her hand to shake. Then with a tilt of her head, Joy tried to think of a way to make things a little more comfortable. "Um, mebbe you could think of it as less a fight and more as a getting to know how we each use our weapons?"

That brought a smile to her face. "Rads is fine, Joy." Shaking the other's hand, she backed up a few steps and nodded. "You're right. This can be a learning experience." Slowly but surely, she was leaving her bubble behind, and crossing that barrier of shyness. And then, once she had backed up what she thought was a good amount, she drew her bow, her face hardening.

Oh ho! A long-ranged weapon? This was going to be a good spar, Joy was already feeling the adrenaline start to pump. She'd already summoned her weapon and brought the bladed-shovel forward. Instinctively she was shifting her weight from one foot to another, readying to leap and run at a moment's notice.

Pulling the string back and firing, Radley winced as she felt that she didn't really put effort into it, really not wanting to hurt the other. You have to try harder than that. If this was a real fight, your opponent wouldn't go easy on you.

Joy was already moving by the time the other trainee let loose their attack. She felt the wind cut past her ear and the grin on her face widened. Joy wasn't exactly blood-thirsty nor was she prone to violence and that was probably why the swing she made against Radley barely grazed the other trainee.
"C'mon Rads, hit me!" she cheered.

Feeling the slight graze, Radley growled and gripped her bow tighter, shifting out of reach of Joy and drawing her bow once more. She took a breath in.... and then slowly let her breath out. THAT'S IT. Her weapon seemed to sing in her palms as Radley let loose another arrow that had far more confidence in it. HP: 39/40 Damage: 8 Charge: 1/3

The arrow thudded heavily against her chest, the FEAR shield preventing any lethal damage but none of the pain that came with it. She skidded backwards from the impact, a hand pressing down hard at the spot she was struck before looking up with wild-eyed glee.
"Atta girl, Rads, that's it!" Joy laughed. "Knew you had it in you to hit hard. But you also gotta learn how to not take a hit." The thick muscles in her thighs and calves kicked off into a ground-devouring dash. The flat of the shovel was slammed into the other woman in a downward arc.
HP: 32/40

Letting out a yelp, Radley didn't have enough time to dodge as she tried to bring her bow up to block, only barely managing to nick the other. "I'll... try to keep... that in mind," She grunted, jerking away and attempting to get distance again. That was the only thing that sucked about her weapon - it was all about distance with bows. For now, Eilissandra added. HP: 31/40 Damage: 1 Charge: 2/3

Joy wasn't going to pull back and give her opponent the chance to gain distance. She knew she was a melee fighter, her weapon had only so much reach. And maybe it does seem as if she was taking advantage of her opponent's inexperience.
But she would be doing Radley a disservice if she pulled her punches. The strike came fast and it came hard.

Twisting and hissing in slight pain, Radley drew her bow at close range, firing it with desperation. She wanted to win this battle now, and she was now trying her best. For her first fight, she didn't think she was doing too badly. HP: 25/40 Damage: 5 Charge: 3/3

Joy was relentless in closing the distance between them. Sure the next series of strikes were either beautifully dodged or perfectly blocked, but that just meant her opponent was getting into her stride. "Yeah! C'mon! Use that bow!" The encouragements came out as a series of barks, but Joy clearly looked like she was having a ball.
