Pensive and on edge already from events both recent and on the horizon, America knocked on Maebe's door with a six pack in one hand and a joint in her pocket.

Things had seemed tense between her an Otto whenever they showed up on Twitter at the same time, but they'd always been a little rough with each other on there. It'd been hard to even tell where the line had been drawn between the two hating each other to dating until it'd been announced outright. It was the sorta thing folks wrote romance novels about.

Deus, all said, would be kind of a shitty romance novel, even if carried all the trappings of a big huge series of them.

Maebe opened the door and swung it open, resting her hand against the wood and leaning on it. She knew America was on the other side of the door, so she reacted (and dressed) appropriately. There was no trace of the torment she'd undergone over the last week, in her appearance. Her hair and makeup were flawless as ever, and her little gym shorts and tank top were on point for a night with a girl like America. She wasn't trying to be sexy, but she was trying. And she was succeeding.

"Well, hello there beautiful." She purred, flickering her gaze from America to the beer. Both of them deserved the compliment. "Aren't I a lucky little girl tonight?"

She grinned and left the door open, turning back into her room and crawling onto her bed to curl up in the mountain of stuffed animals that all rested on it. "Come on in, close the door, lock it if we're getting feisty. Boy I hope you lock it."

America took in the perfection with an appreciative and understanding smile. "You look nice." She closed the door but didn't lock it, though she did place the drinks down, slip off her shoes, and then hop on the fluffy Maebe Mountain.

Grinning, she wriggled in, trying to find a comfy spot that didn't cause a plush avalanche, "Naw, I'm a good girl, okay? Even stopped walking around without a top to keep his dander from getting up." Maebe was soft curves and curls and saucey smiles, and she, as always, smelled wonderful. For a girl as settled into her senses as America was, time with Maebe, even with worries about the girl lurking, was always a sort of special retreat.

Only the smallest of plush avalanches occurred when America buried herself into the bed. Maebe craned her head up to look at that plush little behind wiggling its way down, and then at the unlocked door. She just wasn't that lucky, she guessed. Stupid Taym.

"His dander is permanently up." Maebe pointed out, curling back down into the plush pile and then shifting down until she was able to cuddle next to America, side by side. Her head rested on the rushes of red-orange fire, and she closed her eyes. "He's like, this tightly wound coil. I'm going to hope - seriously hope - that he unwinds a little around you. Otherwise I'm going to get really angry. But if anyone can get someone out of their head, it's you, you temptress." America was everything Maebe always knew she could never be, and having her beside her allowed her to think, if only for one moment, that she'd captured it. But no one could capture America. No one.

"I've missed you. You've been so busy lately. I wither without you, you know. You've made me wither. Look how thin and frail I am." There was nothing thin or frail about Maebe, made obvious by how much skin she exposed when she leaned forward and bent over the bed to grab a drink.

America inhaled deeply. Maebe had once claimed that she smelled nice all over, and America had yet to find the lie. "You'd be surprised, Miss May Be. I certainly was." At this she offered a small, secret smile, followed by a much more shameless waggle of the eyebrows.

"Things got complicated after I went Russia. I got complicated once I was back." With a sigh, she traced along the bottom hem of Maebe's tanktop, an idle, thoughtless gesture of comfortable familiarity. They were not complicated to each other, even with all the loves tangling them up and tragedies ever circling, being with Maebe always felt simple and easy and nice and America liked to keep it that way, much as she could.

"Missed you too, though." Another one of those small smiles, and this one entirely for Maebe. "You know you're one of my Happy Thoughts?"

Maebe's face predictably scrunged up in disgust at the mere allusion that America's waggling eyebrows were attempting to express. "Gross. I don't ever want to be that surprised." She, instead, wanted to stop thinking about Taym in any sort of not-horrible manner and possibly use some bleach on her brain if it was handy. Instead, she burned the thoughts out of her mind with the flame of red hair that fanned out against her own pale skin. Staring into it was searing in the loveliest way, and she knew she'd see an afterimage of it the moment she closed her eyes.

She wondered how a girl like America could get complicated, but it wasn't hard to assume it was all Taym's fault. After all, to Maebe, Taym was the most complicated piece of work there ever was. He kept reciting from fancy books and trying to make people think he was way smarter than he actually needed to be. Just thinking about trying to keep tabs on him exhausted Maebe, and she felt a twinge of sympathy for America. Maebe was high maintenance, but at least she'd never been that level of complicated.

She opened the beer with one hand, but chuckled before she sipped it. "You need better happy thoughts, sweetheart." Maebe purred, rubbing her face against the splash of red-orange fire. It was as close to a thank you as she could get. "But I would be lying if I didn't say you've been one of those Happy Thoughts for me since the day I met you."

She wriggled her butt into the mattress like a pleased pet and over set another stuffed animal. Refraining from telling the other girl that that's probably exactly what Taym would say, word for word, America asked instead, "What other sorts of Happy Thoughts you got? 'Cause I'm a damn fine one, gotta say."

Maebe ran her free hand through America's hair, spreading it out as much as possible until it covered the skin underneath. She agreed that America was an excellent happy thought, but when she was prodded to think of others, she came up startlingly empty. And that was the problem, she supposed. "Happy thoughts are few and far between, lately. Been a bit of a drought, I suppose. Well's running dry."

But she was quick to try and change the subject, because worrying America was the last thing she wanted. "Speaking of happy thoughts, when are we having another girls night? Just hanging out, doing what us girls do. Objectify men and trade secrets. You know. Girl's night."

"Sounds like time to either dig deeper or find a new one," America mused quietly, picking up a fallen stuffed bear and holding it aloft.

"I think we should soon," she addressed the toy sternly, "but let's not forget the importance of doing our nails and having pillow fights." Turning the bear to face, Maebe she went on, "I know where we can get a good deal on a stripper."
