According to the fancy and still fully functional digital clock he'd liberated from the trash outside the demon dorms, Lyle had been in his room for days. It certainly didn't feel like that long, not when he lacked a need for the lengthy stretches of sleep that would break up the time, but now that he thought about it, the pumpkin sun had risen and set a couple of times since he had returned from that one class a while back. Something about minipets. It was a subject he hadn't thought he would ever need to study, and as such, he hadn't paid much attention.
Even after his unexpected date-related discovery, Lyle was debating just remaining where he was. His room had everything he needed at the moment—a soft chair, a handful of plays he'd picked up from the library... him—and nothing short of a natural disaster seemed reason enough to le—
He winced as someone knocked, sharp and loud, on the door. It was more of a bang, actually, and it was followed by a slurring shout.
"POOOOOOOORTALLSSS! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
He didn't know what was so exciting about portals, but after such an enthusiastic outburst he was now ever so slightly interested in finding out.
- - - Even curiosity failed to make the ghost move very quickly. Lyle reached the red portal several hours later, floating to the back of the line and grinning at the ghoul in front of him.
"What's this then?"
"Dunno," she said. "But everyone's doin' it!"
"Well," he said with a debonair but unconscious lift of his left brow, "Then I'll have to as well, now won't I?"

He dropped into the maze with the faintest of huffs, floating back up off of the ground once he had gotten his bearings. The walls were high enough to block out the sun, and yet somehow the place was bathed in a pleasant pinkish glow. It was quite relaxing, at least until he noticed how many people were kissing animals in this place. There was nothing wrong with giving a family vaisel a peck on its fuzzy little head or anything, but the people around him seemed compelled to lay their lips on as many of these awkward stone hamsters as they could find... like a game.
Was this a game?
"Excuse me?" he asked the next person to pucker up near him, a scaly boil with an impressive amount of hair. "Is this a game? Kissing these animals, I mean?"
"Not a game," he replied, a wide grin lighting his green eyes. "It's the only way we can get out. If you don't, you'll be stuck here FOREVERRRRR."
"Oh... what?" Lyle raised his hand to urge the monster to stay and answer more questions, but it was too late. The only way he could get out? He scratched at the back of his neck and shrugged. He supposed he would be kissing some minipets then.

He found a pair of the things soon after, carefully planting his lips on the pair of them before floating away. He didn't feel any differently. Maybe that kid had been playing a prank.

Lyle turned down a skinny path between two walls of leaves, a space devoid of both other people and kushis.

"Hello?" No answer. He kept moving forward, a strange curiosity urging him on.

It was too bad that this curiosity seemed hell bent on dissipating him or at the very least, getting him lost in this maze forever. The path he had chosen was completely kushi-free, and Lyle debated turning around until he looked behind him. It really didn't seem terribly likely that he would find his way out that way either, even if it was the way he had come.

The ghost held out his left hand, deciding that he might find the way out more easily if he traveled along the leafy wall he now touched. That was a thing, right?

Even with a plan, Lyle wandered the maze for some time after that, eventually reaching a clearing of sorts. He hovered to its center, a dramatic sigh passing his lips as he looked around, planning his next course of action. Or he should have been planning. He was mostly just standing there.
Just as he was about to move on, the kushis appeared.

"Hello there," Lyle drawled, eyeing the handful of creatures as they gathered around him. This was going to be so very easy...
The first launched itself at him without warning, tiny arms spread wide as it bounced off of his face. Others followed, and Lyle pursed his lips, trying to kiss as many of them as he could.

Lyle jammed his hand back into the shrubs, trusting his gloves to keep the branches from scratching him up. He didn't know how to float... speedily, so he dropped back to the ground and jogged until the minipets thinned then disappeared.

With no idea how many kushis he had kissed or how many he even needed to, Lyle stopped short as a ghoul ahead of him disappeared into thin air. The portal.

"All right," the boil muttered. He scanned the hedge, hurrying over to the first kushi he saw and pressing his lips to its forehead. The portal flickered to life in front of him, appearing with a low buzz, and Lyle almost fell through it in surprise.
