It was the screeching that first drew his attention. The steady stream of students climbing onto the roof of the auditorium only held it. What was going on? Had someone put something in the water again?

Brenley approached the purple portal with a healthy measure of wariness, climbing the ladder slowly so as not to drop the supplies he had picked up in town. People streamed both into and out of the strange ring, some of the ones coming out quite battered and bloody. Something to fight then. He hadn't properly sparred since his left blade had gone all tiny and distressingly adorable. Sure, he had been throwing it a lot, but that didn't mean he wanted it to... regress.

The boil sighed as he joined the teeming masses, dropping through the portal and landing awkwardly in the grass.

There was nothing here, not even the people who had entered directly before and after he had. He could only guess this had something to do with Scarentines, but beyond the green grass, pink sky, and dull thuds in the distance, there was little to lead him to a definitive conclusion on the matter. Bren spent long minutes wandering in his best approximation of a straight line, minutes that he belatedly wished he had spent looking for a way back out when he finally saw the source of the heavy footfalls.

A large, purple creature approached him, unblinking eyes wide in its aggressively happy face. An eerie stuttering whine grew louder the closer it got to him. It almost sounded like crying.

Although Brenley was content to leave the thing alone, it did not return the sentiment. A clawed paw swiped at him when he failed to back away, and the boil responded reflexively, whispering a spell as he waved his hand, palm down, in a half circle in front of him. Nearby pebbles quivered, then shook, then flung themselves in the air after the monster, pelting it mercilessly.

A little stunned by his effective attack, Bren stood still just long enough to get cuffed in the back of the head. It was almost an insult, the lackadaisical way the creature hit him so easily, so he hit in return... not as well.

He'd just been planning on hitting the hot springs, Roch thought as he climbed up the rickety ladder. Nothing big--a dip in the hottub to relax from a day of back-breaking work (the jackin' bike he'd been working on had blown up. In his face.) But here he was climbing into a hole again.

Why? He had no freakin' clue--especially as he fell into the field. "Well... jack." He looked around, saw a guy fighting jugly (jackin' ugly) purple monster, and thought...

"Lemme smack it too!" he said, hopping to his feet and running over. He summoned his guitar on the way, swinging it. (What? Sore or not, the opportunity to hit something freaky was always to be grasped!)

He turned sharply as a voice piped up from behind him. It belonged to a young man he ever so vaguely recognized, one who had been around once upon a time to teach some sort of dancing prior to his first prom. He'd been so new to this place then. So afraid. He was still afraid of plenty of things Amityville had to offer, but giant purple monsters were not one of them. Nor was dancing, oddly enough.

"Have... fun," he said, his reply punctuated by another cushioned blow from the creature. This was ridiculous. With a long-suffering sigh, Brenley finally summoned his own blades, throwing the smaller of the two into their opponent's calf.

Roch was having flashbacks to highschool, getting batted by an ugly monster. "You know--smacking is all well an' good, but if I'm gonna get beat on, I should try an' make it worth it," he declared, shadowstepping about ten feet back before swinging the guitar across his chest.

"Let's try this," he drawled, his fingers finding the chord, his FEAR channeling through them. He played his A chord, the sonic blast hitting the monster hard.

He got whacked upside the head for it. Still totally worth it. He was grinning even as he shook off the ringing in his ears. "Hey--do I know you?" he asked the other reaper curiously.

Brenley dissipated his dagger, hesitating to reform it in his hand once he had considered the young man's words. The monster didn't seem to have much left in it. Maybe it would be better to hit it as hard as he could as well.

With the barest shrug, the boil retrieved a flat rock from the pouch at his waist. It was already imbued with the magic it needed to injure his target, but he sank an additional word or two into its surface before he tossed it between the monster's feet. It exploded with a bang and a shower of grass, sending bits of rock into the underside of the beast. Bren smiled, the expression small and proud. That didn't always work.

"We've met, I think," he said, eyes still on the monster. "Did you go to Amityville?" The other reaper looked young enough to still go there Bren supposed, but there was something confident and powerful in the way he fought that suggested he was no longer a school kid.

"Yeah, I graduated a little over a year ago, or so," Roch said, pulling his guitar off again and holding it like a baseball bat by the neck. "It's the damndest thing, though--I remember ghouls a lot better than boils for some reason." He shot the other boil a wicked grin, one that said he knew exactly WHY he remembered the ghouls better.

"Roch," he introduced himself before stepping forward and swinging his guitar--and promptly missing because while he was talking the ugly jacker had wandered off towards the other reaper. "Ahtatata," Roch said, catching his balance.

It seemed that confidence and power weren't necessarily the keys to hitting things after all. Brenley smirked, letting the expression linger once he realized he wore it. It was probably a suitable reaction to Roch's comment on the memorableness of school ghouls anyway, far better than any genuine one he might have worn. Most ghouls made him uneasy in one way or another, with the exception of one in particular. Piper made him very uneasy, but she made him quite happy too so it all evened out in the end.

"Brenley," he said, his blades making another appearance. This time he jogged up close to the flagging creature, slicing at the back of its leg in the hope of incapacitating it. He wanted to ask Roch what had brought him to a screaming portal on top of the auditorium when he had presumably been finished with the school for quite some time, but he held his questions for now. "I am grateful for your help." Bren backed away, his eyes on the monster. It was almost over now.

"I was just comin' for the hot springs."

Brilliant boil was brilliant. He saw how close to finished the monster was, so he decided now was the time to look around. "There was a screaming hole and a ladder, and hell, all of a sudden my old instincts rose up and here I am. Where ARE we?" he asked blankly.

It looked like a field. A field in a hole in the sky. Sounded like a song title...

This Roch was a strange one. Competent and seemingly full of interesting experiences, if the young man's aforementioned... instincts were any indication, but distractible to an almost dangerous degree. Bren supposed giving a lot of thought to incapacitating this particular monster was futile. He poked at it almost benignly, covering an ear as it bellowed and fell.

"I'm not certain." He was aware of Amityville's history with Scarentines in a peripheral sense, having been summoned home during last year's festivities, but actually traveling to the place that inspired it wasn't a possibility he had thought of. "I was curious too."

Any additional speculation he might have launched into was cut short by the appearance of another portal, this one of a height and position to comfortably walk through. Was that it?

"Is it over?"

"Looks like killin' the jugly here cut exploration time short," Roch said, looking a bit disappointed as the monster fell. "Oh well." He still looked around curiously for a moment, sniffing the air. "Not peppermint... but I'm pretty sure it ain't Halloween, either... Not Thanksgiving, that's for sure, the colors are all wrong."

He really, really wanted to explore, but who knew how long the portal would last. Reluctantly, he let out a sigh. "Guess it's time t'go back," he said. "It was interesting why it lasted, at least!" he said, heading out the portal.

Had he deliberately thrown the fight so he'd get the chance to look around?

Maybe.
