Killing the dunkels had been satisfiying. After that day out of town, Ebalia had returned with the three dunkel wings to add to her ever-growing collection of items. It seemed to get bigger and bigger every time she’d venture out, but that was a good thing. It meant she was getting better at going on hunts, and it was clear that she was now able to defend herself more properly. Lifedrinker certainly helped with that, and the young girl was glad she had her weapon. Who knew where she would be without it, but it certainly wasn’t where she was at that very moment. Since obtaining her imprinted weapon, things were finally starting to look up in her life, and she had did it on her own. If only her mother could see her now.

The apprentice needed a change of pace out in the woods today. The forests themselves wouldn’t do, and the farmland didn’t really feel particularly interesting, either. She had visited them both recently, and was looking for something different. She wanted to visit a place she hadn’t been before; somewhere new and fresh. But as she approached Endeldarth, she had no idea where that might have been, exactly. That is, until she heard the sound of croaking. The swamps called to her, and before she knew it, Ebalia found herself standing ankle-deep in the muddy swamp waters.

“Normally,” she told her dagger, “I wouldn’t do such things. You know how much I hate the muck and grime.” But there was a reason she allowed herself to do it today. She was eager to kill some more animals, if only to see what she could bring back home as a reward. The swamps hosted a number of animals that called the muggy area their home, so she was bound to find at least something.

Something came in the shape of a groda, bulbous and croaking. The bright orange mushroom sat on his back, and immediately Ebalia had to refrain herself. “Don’t eat that,” she reminded herself, thinking back to what she had read about in books on animals of Souldul. “Their babies nest in those, and then break out of the stomach of people. Which is totally awesome, but I don’t want that to happen to myself.” She chuckled at this, her eyes meeting the talkative groda’s directly. “Someone else’s, yes; mine, no.” That was when she sprang into action. It was time to bring down a swamp frog!

Ebalia cut her arm with a small slice and then worked her magic. The nice thing about it was, having cut herself so much, she was used to the pain by now. Others would have cried, more than likely, but not her. She enjoyed it. With a slice at the air, a wave of slashing energy went straight for the groda, and it cut right into it. The kill was a little disappointing, in all honesty. The Oblivionite half-expected the frog to just deflate once something had cut into it, but that hadn’t been the case. It just sort of gave one last scream before falling into the muddy waters below.

It was as it sunk into the muck that another groda caught her eye. This one tried to lash out at her with its tongue, but Ebalia was agile. She evaded it by side-stepping, and used the blood of its comrade to attack the second one while she had the chance. More energy flew at the second groda, and just like the second one, it let out a scream as it died. All Ebalia could do was grin. With the two of them dead, she would be returning home with two toxic groda mushrooms. Maybe there would be someone she could slip it to in their food without them noticing? With the mushrooms in hand, there was only one way to find out. She’d have to head back to Obsidian City and find an unsuspecting victim to test it out on, and that was exactly what she had planned to do.
