It was brave of Jack to go somewhere with Chel without details, but it was borderline reckless of her to take his hand- not his arm- in public as they walked. It was still her birthday.
"Yer gonna love it. Plenty of people there that act like you." She laughed to herself as they walked, enjoying her private joke.
There was some fine tuning that had to happen for Chel to sneak out that involved some full hunter level sneaking abilities, a dark hoodie, and the promise that she would be on her very best behavior promise for real.
---
The place opened up into what would be hell on earth for Jack most likely. The lazer tag place had a huge lobby filled with arcade machines that kids were running back and forth between. There were neon lights everywhere that screamed remnants of the nineties, and behind that there was a counter with bored, tired looking attendants. The most prominent neon artpiece was a huge sign reading LAZER TAG.

The image Jack had in his head, as he (allowed with the greatest of reluctance) walked hand in hand with Chel, was not what he ended up seeing. Feigning betrayal, he scowled at her and removed his hand from her grasp. "Ha ha."
It was his duty to look as opposed to this as possible until he broke down because lazer tag ******** rocked. This was made easier by the number of children he could hear and see running amok; their very presence made his skin crawl, their shrieks of delight a hellish soprano atop the symphony of overstimulating lights and sounds.
"Do we have to be at this one?" Jack complained. "It looks like they're hosting a ******** ten year old's birthday party in here."

"You really think they're gonna let me hop around 'til we find one that fits yer needs?" She reached up to retake his hand like a cat pawing at a feather boa. "'Sides, they look like they're havin' fun. Just roll with it."
One boring orientation later, and Chel and Jack found themselves in the "armory." It was a small containment room that opened up into the blacklight space-themed lazer tag area. There were vests hanging along the wall, and they were decoratively named- blue was Star Wars names (Chel went there for hers, of course), Red was Harry Potter and Yellow was Hunger Games.
Chel was all smiles for once, somehow fitting in perfectly with the atmosphere. Everything about her ripped clothing, her pink hair, her audacious makeup blended in nicely with the radical nineties background. A kid even complimented her hair and she let him touch it.
But one kid was a d**k and kicked Chel in the shin; on accident (most likely). Nonetheless Chel responded on instinct and yelled, "Ey watch it." The kid stuck his tongue out at her, and that was all it took for Chel to lean over towards Jack, murmuring, "We are ********' wreckin' this s**t," in the most serious voice she'd had to date.

Jack had long since given up his facade of being against this whole game: now he was just a douche armed with a Star Wars vest (sigh) and a gun.
"Language," he tutted her back, though he was grinning at the prospect of possibly ruining someone's birthday by being too boss. Several kids were giving him curious looks due to his hair as well, and it was surprising how much effort it took not to flip them off just to see what would happen--well, besides getting them kicked out. "You going Han Solo on this or are we teaming up, birthday girl?"

Chel gave him a grin, laughing at the fact that he'd picked Princess Leia and robbed it from a small girl that had been reaching for it. Somehow that was perfect.
"Okay now give me a test shot to this target!" The attendant told them, pointing to a practice target. Chel complied and had her pointer on the center. She squinted a little and then shot, hitting what she assumed was the bullseye. She's only done it with one hand, other one resting lightly on her hip.
"Just get me someplace high," she told Jack, patting his cheek lightly. "And no hitting the kids."

Squinting, he took several seconds longer to aim and managed to clip the target's shoulder on his first shot. Close enough.
"Well who the hell am I shooting at, then?" he demanded, nudging her hand off with the forend of his gun. "Unless you meant literally, in which case wow. You have a disturbing lack of faith in me."
He didn't care that the quote was butchered.

"I did mean literally. You 'n me are close combat dude. We're bound to ******** up on accident." She bumped him back with the butt of her gun right in his side.
"3 ... 2 .... 1 ...." Loud sirens filled the air to indicate to them the game had begun. Being far too into this, Chel sprinted out the gate, and her hunter training had finally paid off because she was running farther and faster than any of the kids would ever dream of running. She hoped Jack would keep up at least.

He knew he was in for it when the girl he'd denied the chance to be Princess Leia shot the light in his eyes for no good reason somewhere in the first five minutes of the game. Repeatedly.
"What the—hell!" He ducked behind cover to rub at his eyes with a growl. Jack saw spots for a solid thirty seconds afterwards, and his loathing of children meant for a small bloodbath in retaliation afterwards. It also meant striking out quickly, however, and he didn't manage to get the little b***h back before he had to return to home see for a respawn. At least not this time.

Chel stayed with Jack for a bit, watching his back AND using him as a meatshield (blonde girl had some good techniques!). Eventually they had to split; staying packed together too tightly would give them a disadvantage. Plus they could cover more ground this way.
< This is beneath me and you both look idiotic. >
She found some higher ground and began shooting left and right. It was almost too easy considering she even got a little lazer pointer on her gun. She already had excellent aim without it, and with it she dominated the vertical landscape.
Eventually a kid managed to get her in the back, and she feigned a death scene that made him laugh. She was almost startled that her first reaction had been to pick him up by the chest and throw him over the edge she was leaning on. Luckily she stopped, remembering that this was a human, not a monster.
(Was the line really that blurry?)
Much to the joy of the children, she leapt over the edge and landed on the ground with a loud thud. She really loved not breaking bones anymore- hunter shields were amazing.
She ducked behind a plastic asteroid and was surprised to find Jack there too. "Isn't this fun?"

She saw him wearing a dead serious look as he braced himself against the wall. He blinked several times, as he had been every once in a while since starting the game. The flashing vests and guns he could take (stupid little vengeful b***h aside), but the bright colored background and the extra bits and bobs irritated his eyes more than he let on. He didn't seem to notice Chel until, with a bracing breath, he peered over the edge of the cover, zeroed in on his targets, and shot without mercy before quickly ducking back down. His height hadn't proven advantageous, not when the enemy reached maybe his knees.
The kid next to him looked a little awed and attempted to do the same, albeit to the side rather than over the wall, and gasped when he narrowly avoided being shot down. He shot them a look, apparently waiting for instructions.
"I can cover you if you want to get up top," he said to Chel with a sharp gesture towards a raised area to the left. "Overlooks a good choke point if you're fast. I tried but I can't stay ducked low enough."
"I-I could try," the kid offered.

"Yeah go get it little man," Chel told the kid, offering her fist for a serious blue-team fistbump. The kid ran off and Chel's pointer followed him up the stairs. It only stopped when she noticed two kids on the grating above where they were hidden. She snickered and pointed her gun up, literally shooting two kids from below them. "These things got wide censors," she said matter-of-factly.
Following the little kid was lazily done, and she even found herself sneaking looks at Jack. Was it bad to find him handsome even when they were playing a stupid game of lazer tag? He kept blinking though- was that normal? "Ah s**t. I forgot about your eyes," she muttered, mostly to herself. Of course she'd pick an activity that wasn't fun for both of them.
But then a whole group of kids popped up from behind an asteroid- they were headed somewhere else, but Chel noticed in time to get all of them in the back. "God I wish shadows were this easy." She thought fondly of her high score in the tunnel.

He only was half-paying attention to Chel. He could have sworn he heard...
"They aren't? That's not a very Sunny thing for you to say." Jack perked at the sound of a soft scuffle to the right and brought his gun up--then proceeded to mow down a group that had attempted to leap from cover to cover. He hoped the more he mowed these little s**t down, the less he had to think about his budding headache.
He glanced at his watch and blinked. "Two minutes," he announced before peeling away to see if he could find a better place before they were called back to base.

Chel snickered, following Jack's lead. They left the kid on the high rise, and he was shot down moments later. The blinking lights on his vest were only muffled by his annoyance that his "friends" had ditched him. Chel would have said his first fault was thinking she and Jack were nice people. They were in it to win.
Sirens blared and the round was over. Chel let out a woop and pulled Jack's hand, yanking him towards the exit that all the lights now pointed to.
The natural light was blinding for a moment, but Chel led them to the leaderboard. Sure enough, blue team was on top and Chel had a wopping 50 points. Jack wasn't doing bad coming in second; 46. The average across the poor board was 10-15.
She still hadn't let go of Jack's hand, but a smug look had graced her face. "

Pizza
She wasn't quite ready to run straight back in, both because she was hungry (a piece of toast did not suffice as a meal) and because she knew it had strained Jack's eyes. Instead she had mentioned wanting food, and now they were sat around a table with a pizza (one of the few things a children's entertainment center would have).
"You doin' okay?" she asked him, pulling off the piece she wanted only after he'd gotten one for himself. "With the eyes I mean."

Natural light was the worst thing he could have gotten after laser tag, and like the vampire he was, Jack cringed and turned his head from the light. Chel had to lead him until he could manage to squint; his headache skipped a few steps and went straight to a dull throb.
"Yeah, whatever," he grumbled. "Four points. ********' whoop de doo."
