FAQ and Ruleset

What is RealmForge?
For too long, there has been a vacuum in our community where organized, fun roleplay settings once stood. RealmForge is a two week event designed to create a shared setting and backstory to inspire a new generation of Roleplayers with a new and original sandbox for them to play in.

Why Only Two Weeks?
Simple. To get things done. Open ended plots rarely find themselves closed. RealmForge is meant to simulate a time of war and chaos, one which can inspire a thousand stories in its wake. For this to work, RealmForge has to both begin and end promptly. This also allows for RealmForge players to budget time to participate.

What Sort of Time Should I Budget?
Faction Lords should put aside enough time every day to make 1-2 RP posts, and a few hours during days designated as "Planning Days" below. They should budget time to assess their faction's performance in the last round of battles, and will need to PM the moderation their faction orders by the end of any Planning Stages,

Battle Commanders should budget enough time to post 5 RP fight posts during any days designated as "War Days".

The schedule of events is broken down between Planning Days and War Days.

During Planning Days, all Faction Lords meet in "Court", whereupon their characters must engage in In Character diplomacy. No diplomatic actions, declarations of war, alliances, or trades can be performed without roleplaying it out in Court. By the end of Planning Days, Factions Lords PM the moderation the next territory their Battle Commanders will attack, as well as any Faction Abilities the Faction Lord or Battle Commanders choose to use for the following War Days.

During War Days, Battle Commanders engage in 10 post maximum freeform combat to determine which faction wins the territory contest. Each combat will take place in a preconstructed thread. Included in that thread will be the battle scenario (all combat is set against the backdrop of two opposing armies fighting one another) and any Faction Abilities that may effect the outcome of the battle. Judgement will be posted in the threads once completed.

April 2nd-3rd: 1st Planning Days
April 4th-5th: 1st War Days
April 6th-7th: 2nd Planning Days
April 8th-9th: 2nd War Days
April 10th-11th: 3rd Planning Days
April 12th-13th: 3rd War Days
April 14th-15th: Final Planning Days
April 15th-16th: Final War Days

What Sort of Setting Does RealmForge Take Place In?
The RealmForge setting, Hearthland, is a medieval, multicultural realm. Whether you're inspired by western or eastern fantasy, you can participate in RealmForge.

Hearthland is a bountiful realm which hosts little intelligent life. It is so fertile and so empty, one might suspect it was made to be colonized by the various factions, clans and families who have been brought to it by fate.

The only truly intelligent life in Hearthland is a family of immortal beings who appear to be connected to the realm itself by powerful magic. Though they only number in the twenties, they are organized into a strict noble hierarchy of knights and barons and dukes and princes, all of whom are ultimately ruled by a King and Queen known as Gurzil and Medeina. Powerful and aloof, this family commands Hearthland's natural forces, but does not interfere with the politics and machinations of mortals in their realm except in very special circumstances.

Can I Bring My Pre-established Character into RealmForge?
Yes, with limitations. All characters in RealmForge begin as basic humans. There will be no exceptions. Part of the reward for participating in RealmForge will be the opportunity to develop powers through the course of the event. What powers your character develops are based on two factors: What powers you want, and whether your faction wins or loses Battles.

So while RealmForge is an acceptable place to bring your favorite Gaian character, that character will be completely de-powered.

How Do I Participate in RealmForge?
RealmForge will be taking place from April 2nd, 2015 to April 16th, 2015.

Before that time, players will be organized into factions and choose their factions roles. Also before April 2nd, a map of the Hearthland will be posted detailing which faction begins where.

RealmForge's gameplay unites strategy mechanics from classic boardgames games such as Risk and Diplomacy with modern freeform roleplay combat to create a system to cater both to those who enjoy political and combat-driven roleplay.

By choosing either Battle Commander or Faction Lord, players define their wartime roles and what sorts of impact they can have on their faction's successes throughout the game.

Battle Commanders use freeform roleplay fighting to decide battles for territory contests. Because each faction may only have two Battle Commanders, there will be situations in which a Battle Commanders is deployed to fight, but the rival faction has not sent a Battle Commander of their own to contest. During these situations, the presence of a Battle Commander will add a significant bonus to the dice-roll mechanic used to settle Territory contests in which both sides do not send a Battle Commander.

Faction Lords use tactical decision-making to hinder enemy battle commanders and provide their own with useful advantages in combat before the battle ever begins. Faction Lords also allocate their faction's resources to gain advantage over enemies. In practice, a Faction Lord is like a professional boxer's manager. They decide when fights happen, and against whom.

Why Do I Have To Start as a Powerless Human?
RealmForge is about building a shared setting that players' actions have helped shape. In the end, there will be no overall winner or loser, and players will not be eliminated from the game. Winning battles will provide victors with offensive abilities for their characters, while defeats will provide them with defense abilities.

The fun part is: You get to work with the moderation to craft your earned abilities. They can be any sort of ability you like, so long as they aren't egregiously powerful. Over the course of the game, wins and losses will provide you with a slew of powers, so even if you begin powerless, you don't end up that way.
