It was time. He was old enough to make his own decisions now and he wished to see the land that his mother had left all those years ago. He knew that if he was taken as a pet he would never see his family again, but curiosity and the need to know seemed to run in the family. Was it their family curse or blessing? Larkin did not know. He just knew he had to go.

Where was the land of the Harpies? His mother had told him the direction, but not the specific location. Perhaps she did not wish him to go so she withheld that piece of information. It did not matter. He would head north east until he was stopped or he encountered the desert on the other side of the mountains. Would be the easiest way to know he had gone too far.

Larkin Monrey took in a deep breath and began his journey.
---
He was not sure how long he had been traveling, perhaps it had been a fortnight or even a moon turn, he had lost count of the days. All he knew was that he was in a forest, but it looked like the others he had seen. Was he near the location he sought or was he completely lost? With a sigh the stallion stopped by a stream, perhaps it was a silly desire on his part to meet a harpy. He could always just talk to mother or grandfather about it.

Yvaine Vaire felt both sad and happy to be leaving the Flock after her visit. Her heart still longed for the old ways, but going back wasn't what she wanted either. There had been no word on her sister. Somewhere out there she resided, perhaps okay or perhaps waiting for her to rescue her. It was this that helped her find peace in moving from the Flock into the wilds with her mother. They were welcomed back to the Flock when they wanted to go. But her mother had not returned since they left.

Her uncle and his father lived outside the Flock--they had fled awhile back. It was partially that reason that made her stay outside of her sisters. Her heart was at constant war with itself on what she should do.

Lost in thought, she almost didn't see the stallion until she was in the stream. She watched him warily before moving out to capture him---realizing at the last moment that she didn't do that anymore.

A movement in the shadows drew his gaze and his eyes widened in shock. Not too far away from the river bed a blue mare stood watching him warily. Black spikes protruded from her back and black butterfly wings lay delicately upon them. Her tail was not the usual type of tail, for there was no hair, it was like a short lizard tail, it too contained spikes. But what drew his eyes the most were the four claws. Were hooves should had been, there were sharp black claws. Could she be one of the Flock? It almost seemed unreal, just when he had given up his search, she showed up.

“Hello.” He bowed his head to the mare, showing her respect, “Am I trespassing upon your land? If I am I am very sorry. I also do not know where I am at, which is silly and depressing at the same time.” Larking continued to talk to the mare, it had been a while since he last conversed with another living thing besides himself.

She watched him bow to her and speak, quite formally. "Yes and no," she gave the merest hint of a smile with her eyes downcast. Wait, no that was how one went about capturing a male and she wasn't doing that anymore. She was...well, she wasn't quite sure what to do with a male if she didn't capture one.

"You...shouldn't be here though, these lands are guarded and unless you want to stay indefinately..." Well, if she couldn't capture him, there was always compelling him to stay. She wasn't very good at this though, part of her character was her forcefulness and determination. Her mother liked to call her "pushy". But well....

His hat was tilted just so and his wings were lovely, his smile dazzling. She felt herself smiling up at him through lowered lids. "Why don't you come with me? I mean....well, I guess I'm asking," she put bluntly.

He could not stop staring at her, perhaps it was rude, but she was breath taking. She was not like any mare he had ever seen. Her coloration reminded him of a blue sky with storm clouds rolling in. Her eyes were the same silver color as the silver bracelets and bands she wore upon her legs. When she gave that tiny awkward smile, Larkin could not help but walk forward. Her next words gave him pause, “Indefinitely? What do you mean?” Did he actually stumble upon the Flock lands? Was this goddess before him a Harpy? She had the four claws that was the usual sign, but she just seemed so different than what his mother had described.

Again when she smiled he could not deny her anything, and gave her a bow in his assent, “My lady, I would follow you anywhere.” Did he really want to do this? Enter the life of the Flock and be a pet to this gorgeous mare? No matter how he looked at it, he could not see the downside to belonging to her. Yes he would miss his mother, father and siblings, but he would be happy and so they would be happy for him.

Yvaine tilted her head at him and looked up through her lashes. This stallion was offering to come with her no questions asked. "But, you do not even know my name," her voice was soft but husky. "I mean these are Flock lands and I am of the Flock." And yet not, but she did not say that.

He was willing to follow her, and it intrigued her as much as his looks. He had an intelligent and kind air about him. His eyes danced like silver moonlight on a lake. His wings shone as though touched at the edges with gold. Something about him, took her breath away for a moment.

"I am Yvaine Vaire."

Budump, budump, went his heart, he did not ask it to still. The way she looked at him beneath her lashes and the secrets she seemed to hold and only hint at with her movements. Ah. So she was of the Flock, she knew the intricate dance to lure in a stallion and this thought did not bother him, only intrigued him more, “I may not know your name, but I feel as if I have known you my entire life.” Who was this stallion who kept sprouting sweet but corny words to the exotic mare? What would his mother think if she saw this? He gave a mental shrug; she will probably never know what occurred during this meeting, since he would never return home to tell it.

Larkin bowed his head, “A beautiful name for a beautiful mare, It is a pleasure to meet you Lady Yvaine. I am Larkin Monrey.” He smiled at the mare when he gave his introduction, his mother had taught him that manners were important and respect for mares was an absolute must.

Larkin Monrey. His name was like a song, soft and sweet and pure. She approached him, the feathers in her hair sweeping her cheek as she kept her eyes on his. His words were honey to her ears, a slow burn in her chest began that was not entirely unpleasant.

Her mother had talked to her of taking stallions, of bringing them back to the Flock. She had often spoke of how one would seduce one and why the Flock depended on this mode of bringing in stallions. Her mother hadn't told her how it would feel. Was it like this with any attractive stallion or was this more than that? Was this burn in her chest the hint of something blossoming.

"I will not take your freedom," she said gently. "I would not put you in chains to bind you to me. I am of the Flock and yet, I do not keep all their ways. I believe in choices. And you have one to make. Come with me if you will. Stay as long as you like. Leave when you like. As for me, I chose to ask you to come with me. The journey to my home is long and I would appreciate your company."

Her cheeks flushed brightly as she cast down her eyes. It was strange to speak so openly to a male, to ask rather than demand--and yet there was something humbling and beautiful about it.
