Cami hadn't gotten to say goodbye to Otto and she was trying to be okay with that. Sometime between going into the bedroom to pack, getting sidetracked (willingly) by Maebe while packing, and coming out of the bedroom...he'd just gone. She was trying not to let it squeeze around her heart, trying not to let the sorrow of that lack of goodbye beat her into submission. She had a girlfriend still...she thought. Insecurities had cropped up inside of the blonde-tipped redhead that she hadn't felt in so long that she was almost awkward with them.

When had she learned to stop hiding? Where had that wall gone? Had Otto and Maebe really torn it away so completely? She was trying to rebuild and finding that they'd even hauled away the slag.

Perhaps she was being a little dependent now. A smidge clingy. Angry when dealing with anyone not her family or her lady-love. Cami had made an effort that day to get cleaned up, brushing out her unevenly-growing mane of red curls and putting on a bright nylon dress that clashed horribly with equally bright leggings. She looked like a train wreck of color and loved it.

Lifting a hand she rapped lightly on Maebe's door. "Maebe baby, let me in."

Maebe had been unintentionally recluse. She'd even left the island a few times if only because running away from her problems was her best strategy. She was there when Cami finally decided to come check on her, and she opened the door to see the vibrant, colorful woman standing in the hallway. Looking at her was painful, because it hurt to see something so beautiful anywhere near her. She took a step back, as if she could somehow save Cami from being sucked into the black hole she'd become.

But who was she kidding? Cami had been lost within long, long ago.

She left the door open, and returned to the place on the floor where she'd been sitting, re-arranging her makeup bag in a strange order. Everything was being placed in groups based on similarity. She was working on nail polishes when Cami had come in.

"Hey." She murmured, sullenly poking at the glittery polishes with one finger.

Cami had thrown herself into the black hole, the maelstrom, whatever it was Maebe wanted to consider herself these days. Honestly black hole was almost an improvement over broken doll. There was more to her than just the idea of a doll, a toy to be dressed up and played with, let alone a broken one. There was nothing broken about the beautiful blonde who had reached out to capture Cami's heart so unexpectedly.

If asked, Cami would have said that Maebe was the breaker. Not the broken. A black hole was so dense, so full of matter (and mattering to others) that it was impossible to escape the pull. The allure. Maebe was using the metaphor to consider herself a crushed, dead thing. If Cami had heard it she would have expounded on how there was no leaving Maebe because she was just that irresistible. She would have found picture after picture of stars stretched out around the edges of black holes.

Mimsy might even have helped!

Looking down at the seemingly-random heaps of cosmetics she frowned before biting it back and trying a smile instead. You had to always smile. Otherwise you lost people. Lost Otto. ********. Fingers clenched into a fist before she loosened it and knelt to press a soft kiss to her girlfriend's cheek. "Missed you."

"I know." Maebe muttered, her eyes focused intensely on the spectrum of nail polish colors. She moved the red over to the left more. America loved red.

"Sorry I've been missing. I thought distraction would help." She picked up a blue nail polish, and moved it like a chess piece, over towards the right. "It didn't."

And she knew, no matter how much she wanted it to, that Cami would have the same rate of failure as she tried to help. Perhaps that was why she'd run away so quickly; she couldn't stand letting Cami try to save her, after having watched the woman lose her best friend so quickly. She couldn't be another Otto to her. She had to be better.

But she wasn't better, was she? Cami had fallen in love with the same person, twice.

She lifted her eyes up, just enough to lean in, and kiss Cami's lips with a gentle kiss of her own. It felt so good. She wished it was enough.

Distraction?! Immediately alarmed eyes flicked towards Maebe's neck and wrists looking for the telltale rope burns and bruises that signaled a dangerous distraction. Seeing nothing but old ones that were healing, or healed entirely, a part of her relaxed. The rest of her was still strung too tight, spun more and more tense as she looked at dull blue eyes and thought of the other pair she'd seen in such a way. Fear, anger, pain all stabbed through her gut.

The unexpected kiss soothed some of that but not enough. Leaning in she pressed in for a warmer, more lingering kiss expecting to feel the rush of emotion that usually came with such a gesture between them. That inexplicable something that had kept them together so far. It was there but it was faint, so faint as to barely be registered except on the scale of Cami's hopes and dreams.

Brushing lovely golden hair back from a gorgeous ivory face the brown-skinned beauty tried again. "What kind of distraction?"

Maebe moved away from the perfect groups of makeup she'd created, and crawled over to sit beside Cami. She let the woman soothe her with her hands, and her scent, and her lulling voice. It was easy to play make believe in her arms.

"I took Peyton out to a club. She's having man trouble too. And the usual.. dancing, flirting, alcohol to the point of unconsciousness, etc. Anything to make me forget Deus existed for a little while." She slumped, lower and lower, and eventually used none of her strength to hold herself up anymore. She remembered the warm comfort of being nestled between Cami and Otto, safe and captured in their arms and legs and bodies.

She would never feel that exact comfort, anymore.

"Do you think he's ever going to come back to us, Cami?" Her voice was tiny, more like a child's than she'd ever sounded before.

When had she stopped being comforting? It was the single question that plagued Camille over and over again. Where had she failed that the two people she loved, that she would have done anything to make happy, had to do things so incredibly drastic to forget? Once it had been enough to hold them close, to love them, and wrap them up in that excess of emotion she'd been born with. What had happened that it wasn't enough now?

Bowing her head she nonetheless let Maebe's hair spread across her shoulders as the young woman all but buried her face in ample cleavage. Fingers skimmed through all that lustrous wealth as she tried again to be a comfort to her sweetheart. "On his own? I don't think Otto will move from his couch ever again if it's left up to him." Fingers tilted Maebe's chin so that their eyes met. "But I don't intend to let him stew forever. It's bad for everyone." She hadn't promised to leave him alone. Just leave his apartment when he asked.

She could stand outside the door and shout his name until he let her in. It worked rather well and she had more than enough hot air to put towards it. "I want to make it okay again."

Cami's words made Maebe want to burst into tears, but she held it together. She should have known that Cami wouldn't give up so easily. She should have known to just leave it in her girlfriends hands.

And so she did. For the moment, she tried to believe that Cami would make everything all right again. Cami would fix things, and then Otto would be better again. But deep down, there was a part of her that knew he would never be okay with her again. It troubled her, but she kept burying it so far down, that she wouldn't let it surface until she was alone.

For one, she reveled in the tiny morsel of hope Cami gave her, and the soft, decadent feel of her breasts pressed against Maebe's cheeks. Her lips kissed them helplessly, and she lost herself in the smell of Cami's skin and the feel of it against her own. She was the only distraction that could ever have truly worked, but Maebe refused to purposefully use Cami as a distraction. Cami was not a distraction. Cami was the only love she had left. She treated it too gently, scared to frighten it away.

"I love you." She told her, the voice thoroughly muffled within the plumpness of Cami's ample bosom.
