Things had started to turn around on the day that Ebalia had met Naita. After that encounter in the Forests of Endeldarth, the young girl had returned with quite the haul in terms of loot. Not only did she have three dragon souls to show for their efforts, but she also had eight sharp claws, a plain cloth, and an etched coin as well. Needless to say, the group of other homeless kids that called the streets home, as well as a few of homeless adults, were quite surprised when she came back with her newfound treasures. Yet those things paled in comparison to what she also found that day: a new friend in the Firani khehorian, but not just any sort of friend. Naita was her first true friend, and that meant a lot to Ebalia.
The success of the hunt she had done with Naita had left the young girl feeling optimistic. If she could do that well with a bunch of ysali dragons and other creatures, perhaps she would do just as well on her own, too? There was only one way to find out, really, and it was for that reason that Ebalia had wandered out into the Forests yet again. “Maybe we should just get a small hut or something out here,” she commented to Lifedrinker, whom she held in her hand. “We’ve been spending a lot of time in the woods, and it makes sense.” She then paused, pondering such an idea, before laughing and shaking her head vigorously. “Nah! We’re city folk at heart, Lifedrinker. The woods are not for us.” If the dagger could talk, it would probably agree. While taking trips out into the woods was all nice and good, actually living out there didn’t really suit their style. Ebalia liked to be in the city; that was where all the action was, and who was she to run away from all that?
Out on the outskirts of the forest, after a few hours of walking, the woods gave way to tilled farmland for crops and animals to graze. It was there that Ebalia found herself, looking out at the animals that meandered about as they munched upon the grass. Farming was good for some folks, but she would never really get into it. Too much dirt, grim, and poop from the animals one had to care for – no, thank you. Sure, the city itself was dirty in places, too, but it was a different kind of dirty: the kind that the Oblivionite girl could deal with. Watching the animals was nice, though, and found herself gazing at some domesticated dalaks in the fields.
The dalaks weren’t alone. Swooping down from the sky came a dunkel, ready and eager to feast upon the domesticated bird. Ebalia weighed her options. She couldn’t very well let the dalak get attacked and mauled by the dunkel. Besides, she had been eager to kill something, anyway. It was time to bring about some carnage, and she couldn’t wait. With a quick sliding of her wrist, the apprentice sliced the blade over her right arm, enough to produce both blood, and a small scratch. From this blood that the injury produced, Ebalia then began to work her magic. Just like she had done with the ysali dragons in the hunt with Naita, she had sent a wave of slashing energy in air, directly toward the dunkel. It hit its mark without difficulty, ultimately slicing the poor creature in half.
All the ruckus caused the dalaks to bolt away, running to spot clear across the fields so they could be as far from Ebalia as possible. She didn’t blame them, honestly. Others probably would have run away, too, at the sight of her working her magic. After the attack, the two halves of the dead dunkel fell to the ground, and the Oblivionite couldn’t help but grin. That was fabulous! A jolt of adrenaline coursed through her veins at the kill she had just gotten, and the girl couldn’t be happier. Yet this happiness was short-lived, however, as another dunkel swooped down to attack.
“What the-…OUCH!” It was the blood from her wound that had done it, she had come to realize. Dunkels often had a taste for blood, and it never really seemed to matter what type. Dalak blood, Oblivionite blood, even other dunkel blood, probably. The small winged creature had managed to n** the girl on the ear, but then circled around her. Well, if it’s blood that the foolish creature wanted, she had no problem obliging it in that. Ebalia took advantage of the blood from the first dead dunkel and slashed Lifedrinker in the air toward the other. Another wave of energy lashed out, and this time lobbed the creature’s head off completely. Two of them were now dead.
A third was coming toward her, and it was the last of them from what she could see. Angry and annoyed at the sudden onslaught of flying creatures, Ebalia let out an angry yell and a final wave of energy. It was nice, being able to utilize the blood of other creatures she had killed. Less injuries for her, ultimately. The girl took advantage of it again and watched as the energy slashed this one right through the middle of its stomach. Good riddance! With the corpses of the dead bat-like things now in front of her, Ebalia did the only thing that came to mind. She gathered up the wings, and then turned around to head back in the forest toward home. It was time to head back now, she decided. There had been enough carnage for one day.
