PRINCESS ISLAND

General Information
Maintaining a superior defense is the pride of the Moon Division, defending even at the expense of attacking. However, this can be hard, especially for trainees who just got new magic weapons full of glowing and powers. Thus the Princess Island. At the center of the island sits a princess who will do absolutely nothing to protect herself, and it's up to you to build defenses that will withstand shadowling attacks so she she doesn't die in a horribly realistic manner.

There's four main paths for shadowling's to travel through, and you have 3 types of building materials to create your defenses from: straw bales, wood, and bricks. The sturdier the material, the sturdier the barrier, but the fewer you can build in the allotted time. After a set amount of time, the princess will crush a pumpkin pill, attracting varying amounts of lurking shadowlings. You get to watch helplessly from the observation station, without getting to attack yourself.

These creature are extremely weak and ill formed, coming up against a solid defense they will disperse, but in turn they also weaken said defense. When a defense goes down, they go right to the princess and attack her. Should she survive the wave, you get to go back down, rebuild, and do it again.

If you fail: the princess has died, horribly, and you've wasted a lot of time on this only to look fairly incapable. All things considered? Most pleasant course to fail.

If you win: peen points and bragging rights go to those with the healthiest princess and lasted through the most attack waves.
If you choose to go beyond 5 rounds, switch the enemy dice roll to 4 d20s.

    Mechanics
  • Your princess has 20 hp
  • First, roll the strength of you defense, using the dice for whichever building type you choose.

    Brick: 4 d12
    Wood: 8 d6
    Hay bales: 12 d4

The order of the die determine the HP for each barrier location. For example, with bricks, rolling 5/6/8/1, would mean that path 1 has 5 HP, path 2 has 6 HP and so on. With a wood roll of 3/3/3/1/2/5/5/2, the first 2 dice would equal the amount of the first path. Brick would be the least math-y of the building materials (you lazy asses.)
  • Roll 4 d12 for the attacking forces. Once again the order of the dice correspond with the path being affected. Then do the math to determine the status of your defenses and princess.
    Example:
    My defenses are 5/6/8/10
    The attackers are 3/7/3/8

    The result defenses are 2/-1/5/2
Negative numbers are taken off the princesses HP, leaving her at 19 HP.
  • Go back and rebuild your defenses in the same manner as before, you'll be building on top of old defenses so you add the new defense HP to the remaining defense HP. Negative numbers = 0 HP for the defense, not negative HP.
  • Minimum rounds to complete the course is 3

    Bonus Mechanics
  • Their defense expertise allows them to build slightly sturdier barriers. This applies to all paths that start at 0 hp. They do not stack. So if you are re-building on a barrier that lasted from an existing round, this bonus does not apply, as it is already still in effect.

  • Trainees: 0 hp bonus
  • Moon Trainees: +1 hp bonus to each path
  • Hunters: +1 hp to each path
  • Moon Hunters: + 2 hp to each path

Joy eventually managed to get over her resentment and distrust of smartphones and touchscreens. For one thing, it allowed her to discover Twitter and opened up the communication channels for someone new to Deus. For another, it allowed her to contact Harrison, aka the guy Horace strongly recommended she talk to about Moon Division stuff.

Learning through doing had been the best teaching method for Joy. So that was why she was at the training grounds for Moon, rather than in some refurbished classroom for a lecture. All that was left was for Harrison to arrive so in the meantime she began to warm up.

Harrison had not strictly been directed to do a lot of trainee hand-holding. Just keep them out of trouble, which he tried to do by at least telling them to keep in groups and not get each other knocked up.

It was a little like being a camp counselor.

But he always figured the better trained up the trainees were, the more lines of glowing weapons between him and whatever came After. He meant to take Mikael out to the same training fields, since the kid liked building so much, but this kid had asked in particular for it.

Harrison showed up in a janitorial-style jumpsuit, which was from the quarter master and not out of his own pockets. He was muscled, and young, not even in his mid-twenties. He wore one nice earring, and his hair was bleached and styled. Scars twisted his lips up.

He eyed Joy as he walked up. At least she knew to stretch.

"That's what I got told, one of my first courses," he said, more quiet than his usual gruff tone, "that you got to warm up. So that's smart. You bring water?"

Mid-bend, Joy nodded in response, angling her head so that Harrison could see her pursing her lips towards a bottle of water and a small, folded face towel a few feet away. "The spare towel's for you. I got one already tucked in the back of my shirt." True to her words, peeking out from her collar was a corner of white fabric. And after a few seconds she added with a chuckle, "Old habit my 'nay drilled into me."

When she felt limber enough, she righted herself, "And now that's done, what's the next move?"

Apparently the first move was to build things. Without any help or guides or instructions. Well <********>. Joy was alright with her hands, but she found she was better with her feet. And that she was much more suited to breaking s**t than at making s**t.

No sense in complaining now and at least this was just training and practice. She couldn't imagine how awful things would be if this had been an actual life or death scenario. Plus, having someone observing felt a little weird. It wasn't the same as being watched. She was being evaluated and judged and okay that made her nervous as ******** the end, the piles of wood she'd gotten were either incredibly misshapen or horribly rotten. Shaking her head at her failure of an attempt, Joy went up to her princess and placed an apologetic hand on its shoulder.

"Sumalangit nawa," she said.

Joy watched as the Princess Golem tottered its way along the supposedly defended paths. She was genuinely surprised to find the defenses had held up for the first two paths but she couldn't help but give a hiss of commiserating pain when the third path was overrun. The Moon trainee could barely believe that the Princess managed to make it until the end.

Huh. Either Joy's building skills weren't as bad as she thought they were, or the Princess was tougher than it looked! Joy elected to assume it was the former.

Joy climbed back down from the observation platform. Having gotten a better look at the course and how it was going to be used, she took this opportunity to improve on her original design. Admittedly there was a lot of room for improvement between the first wave and the second, and the Moon trainee was going to make good use of it.

It wasn't going to be perfect, but it was definitely better than the first time around. It was easier to think of it as growing pains. Even if she herself wasn't going to experience said pain when the shadowlings overwhelmed the barriers. But you can't have it all.

When time was up, the moon trainee skittered on back up to the tower to watch whether or not her latest attempt was of any good. She did better than she expected, and was glad for it as the golem princess began to totter through the path with as much survival instinct as a parsnip.

Joy chewed on her lower lip nervously as the barriers managed to hold off the shadowlings long enough to allow the golem to escape unscathed! Or as unscathed as it could be based on its first trek.

Again, the trainee climbed down to assess the situation of the barriers. If during the first attempt she wasn't thinking at all and was simply moving on automatic, and the second attempt had her carefully thinking about her task, her third attempt had her over-thinking things. Which was probably why the last bit of the path wasn't as well-formed as the others.

Took too long. her weapon's reedy voice chided.

He!

When Joy was back at the watch-perch, she crossed her fingers in hope that she would succeed. She only needed to have the golem survive three waves and this was the last one. The first three paths went off without a hitch and Joy preemptively punched the air in triumph.

And then the golem reached the fourth path and the barriers gave way. "Puki ng ina- RUN! RUN RUN RUN!!!! Biliiiiiiiiiiiiiis!!!" she yelled, as if it would do any good with the golem.

Spoilers: It didn't.

She might have exhibited a little too much enthusiasm and concern for the golem princess' fate before she remembered she had someone watching her performance. "Ah, uh, she made it." Joy reported to Harrison, grinning with wild-eyed delight.
