((Extra roll))

"It only seems practical," Lerin explained to his bird-like companion as he bunched his hair up in messy knots behind him. A dainty flick of fingers had his flower-pin secured to the side of a braid, a finishing touch to adorn his dark locks with a splash of color. Quietly, he stared at himself in the reflective glass; shoulders dipped, a tiny frown on his face, brows pinched together with indecision. From his shoulder, Tandoori tipped her head quizzically, clearly having no idea what her Shifter was going on about. She gave a little bounce, a nudge to his cheek to spur him on, and with a huff, Lerin rose.

The young Shifter was not adept with much, by way of weaponry. He held no prowess with bow or knife, and lacked the physical capacity to use a spear efficiently. Magic eluded him. It seemed like something too noble for an unintelligent savage to use. Besides, he didn't really want to kill anything.

For the purposes of self-defense only, he'd selected a whip, and as he coiled it up and tied it to his belt, Tandoori's feathers ruffled in distaste. "I told you, it's just for practicality," he reminded the kinfa gently, giving her beak a reassuring scratch. And it was. Despite how he'd seen it used previously, it seemed unlikely that he'd be able to do real damage with a whip unless it was purposeful. With any luck, he wouldn't have to deal with people attacking him, especially not in the security of the lands he'd grown up in. Which left him open only to the dangers of the beasts, a much more likely threat, anyway. Hopefully, the harsh sound of the air splitting beneath the whip's crack would be enough to scare anything dangerous away if he were to fall into a bind...

The rest would come as it would.

Plucking up his notebook and a jar of ink, Lerin set out, descending from the treetops with a sense of purpose that he hadn't felt in a long time. His mission was not to be an eventful one, or even one that was necessary or useful to anyone else, but Lerin felt his spirits lift nonetheless.

As he took up his post on a low-hanging branch overlooking a murky swamp, the Shifter smiled. "See the nondwa in the tree over there?" He questioned, pointing it out to Tandoori as he flipped open his book. "It's markings are different." He plucked a quill-feather from his hair and produced his ink jar. "And despite it being nighttime, this one appears to be sleeping. Most seem to be active at this hour, hm?" The creature was a few yards off, but Lerin spoke plainly. As far as he could tell, nondwa didn't have particularly impressive auditory receptors. Its stillness might almost indicate that it were dead, save for the glow that still emanated from it. He expected it would at least be dulling, if it were on the path to the afterlife, but maybe not... With a tap of his quill to his chin, he jotted the note as a reminder.

Rumbles from below attracted his attention. Lerin's dark grey eyes flicked toward the sound, then briefly back to the nondwa. It didn't appear to be doing anything interesting... Maybe it would even still be there after he scoped out the sounds. The nondwa were beautiful and still quite interesting, but they lacked the ingenuity of mammals. They were only insects, after all. It would likely be more interesting to study the habits of something that could snarl like that. A radaku, surely. He hadn't even tried to seek one out since his last encounter...

But since he was here and it was here, he might as well just... see what happens.

Feeling emboldened by his good mood, Lerin dipped down to the forest floor, sticking close to the tree roots to avoid stepping in the thick, oozing mud that bordered the swamp lands. The sounds weren't far, though the exact location somehow eluded him. They rose in pitch and frequency, further inspiring his curiosity. "Doori, do you know...?"

The bird managed to look miffed, somehow, glowering at Lerin through emerald orbs. The hum that slipped from her throat was disinterested, encouraging her companion to have a similar mindset. The Shifter could not, though. He kept his footsteps light, seeming to go in circles about the noise, until it stopped.

Lerin came to a halt at the same time as the growls ceased. He peered around, grey gaze flicking about curiously and searchingly. The mumblings returned from... beneath him...? Lerin paused, crouching down along the tree roots and clambering slowly forward until he could peek between the gnarled and knotted roots at the bottom of the tree. As he approached, a dark opening became visible at the base, concealed by roots and mud. He moved forward just enough to see inside.

A radaku lay on its side, silvery in tone and breathing heavily. At first, Lerin thought it must be sick, but it moved, lifting its head and revealing a blue and silver puppy. Lerin's heart hammered, and his cheeks flamed, eyes widening slightly. The mother licked its head, and the small thing started to yip, crying out loudly. A second set of cries joined the first, and a green and silver youngling bumbled into view.

For reasons he couldn't explain, Lerin felt he deserved to move closer, so he did. As his slim hand landed at the entrance to the little alcove, a deeper growl pierced the air. The Shifter lurched backward as an aqua-toned, long-clawed arm arced through the opening, shredding the air where his face had been seconds before. The father. "S-sorry!" Lerin squeaked in alarm as he scuttled backward. The forepaw clawed at the roots outside, hauling the male radaku forward as it tried to escape the tangle and give chase to the intruder. The creature, though... It looked like the one from before. "Maku-?" It barked, loudly, viciously, saliva rolling form its maw as it bared its teeth.

It was a shame to leave so quickly, but it was also a shame to disturb them now. Eyes still ablaze with delight, Lerin turned and fled, taking to the trees quickly in hopes that the radaku would see little reason to chase him. He hadn't seenmuch, but he'd still been present. And it was a beautiful thing to be in attendance for.

Tandoori snorted from his shoulder.

"Oh, right. I... didn't tell you I'd named him, did I?" He asked sheepishly. "The radaku from before... I thought to call him Makui. The father did look like him, didn't it? At least we know why he was desperate for escape."

Further study would be needed.
