Maya stared angrily up at the leafy sky. She wasn't adverse to the winters of Jauhar the place was still within a comfortable zone for her. However the rain-pour that had seemed to start recently wasn't something Maya herself enjoyed. And while she enjoyed water immensely she didn't enjoy having to walk through it splashing against her. She much preferred to be swimming in it.

The radaku, Pacju, was following along almost as miserably behind her. They were currently working their way back towards a new home. A tree she had recently been able to create a new home in. One that she and Teiluj could live quietly and safely away from her other sisters, as well as those who didn't care for the mixed blood of her daughter.

Desperatly wanting to get home Maya picked up the pace, glancing once behind her to make sure Teiluj was following along. "Hurry, we better get out of this downpour before you get sick."

Teiluj followed calmly behind her mother. She had spent most of the day searching the forest around her for things that may be out of place. For signs of earthlings or other Alkidike that might have ventured close to home. With her Kinfa riding on her back, Teiluj wondered if Starline was ever going to learn how to fly. The bird was showing remarkable improvement with it's wing strength. It could not however seem to get off the ground and so relied on Teiluj to get it from one place to the other.

Looking up ahead Teiluj was forced to pick up the pace of their walk. The rain didn't seem to bother her as much as it did her mother. Something about the rain set her at ease. Besides, she knew they were heading 'home' and it wouldn't be long before they would be able to dry themselves off.

The younglings mother Pacju followed tightly behind Teiluj, almost as if it was protecting the mixed girl from running off and getting lost. Some days she really hated all the protection her mother gave her.

After confirming her daughter was following Maya smiled and kept the pace up. Checking her packs to make sure they were still closed. Before the torrent of rain had hit Maya was out harvesting food for her and Teiluj, and their companions. While trying to teach her ever curious daughter about the world. Lately though Teiluj was starting to become a bit more obstinate about her rules. She was pushing the boundaries more and more. This was driving the Alkidike mother crazy. Maya tried to remind herself that Teiluj was growing and would soon want to find a place of her own.

The thoughts saddened Maya, she loved Teiluj with all her heart. Perhaps giving Teiluj a bit more aggressive training in fighting would help her daughter to keep herself safe when she was out wandering Jauhar alone.

Reaching the great tree Maya moved towards the roots climbing up a few branches to where a hole in the tree had been carved out. Feet first maya slipped into the trunk of the large tree.

Grunting Teiluj tried hard to keep up with the pace Maya had set for them. It seemed to be getting faster as they got closer to home, thus causing Teiluj to fall behind. "I don't get it, what's so wrong with staying out in the rain?" Teiluj shivered as she spoke, ignoring the rush as she tried to keep her breathing steady. Jumping over large bushes or dodging under lowered branches.

It took her longer to get home than it had taken Maya, once home Starline had jumped down from the gripped clothing she was hanging onto and scurried along beside the youngling towards the tree. Like a marked pair the two climbed the tree in near unison. Their speed matched one another. The baby Kinfa had learned to use it's feet and beak to get it where it wanted to go. Still attempting to take flight by flapping it's wings and attempting to take flight from the tree.

Starling was the first to scurry into the opening, with Teiluj behind her. Pacju on the other hand had a small opening under ground that gave way to a small room meant only for the Radaku. The opening to the Radaku's nest was like a trap for invaders.

Entering the house gave Maya a start, there was an unusual glow from within. And while her daughter and picked up her habits of collecting flowers and glowing fungus there was no possible way it could have grown that much in the time they had disappeared. Even if there was a great rise in moist air. She wanted to explore what it was, but didn't want to risk something happening to Teiluj while she wasn't looking.

Maya's dark bug-like eyes watched the entrance to the tree with an intense focus. Her hands twisted and squeezed her hair to free the water trapped in each section of hair while she waited for her daughter. She felt nervous, worried about her youngling. It was taking some time for Teiluj to return to the tree. The squawk of Starling entering was enough to relax the Alkidike woman. Starline was never far from the mixed breeds side. Much like Pacju was rarely from hers.

Reaching over to a shelf by the opening, Maya pulled a cloak free, opening it up to wait for Teiluj to enter. Once she had, the mother wrapped her daughter quickly in the warm dry fabric.

Teiluj squealed and giggled as she wiggled about. The fabric that was covering all her senses tickled. The part that tickled the most were her ears and antennae. Squirming out of her mothers loving care Teiluj stumbled back and giggled some more. Rushing forward to give her mother a warm hug. Her eyes adjusting to the shift of light before she saw the strange glow above them.

"Mamma what is that?" Pushing away from her mother Teiluj started moving upstairs. There was something oddly bright about the glow. Upon entering upstairs Teiluj found her breath had been taken away. The stunning display of wings and dust all around her. Teiluj felt like she was in the middle of a dust storm. All the Nondwa around her. Their wings flapping to dry, or shift to a new position on the wall or floor or hammock.

"Nondwa mamma it's like a whole flock of nondwa!"

Maya ticked her daughter as she attempted to get her dry from the rain. Water was good but not so much inside the tree where the wood had potential to rot and cause devastating damage. The woman did not want to go about trying to build a new home. This was her third one. The other two had been burned down her her youthful anger. She sorely regretted that mistake. But sometimes emotions ran too high, and would have taken so much to bring under control. A strength of will that the Alkidike did not have at the time. Raising Teiluj however had given her a greater strength over her emotions.

Blinking twice as she tried to register what was going on with her daughter Maya watched her run away up the tree towards her room. Listening carefully with her antenna and her ears. Her daughters yelp pulled Maya into action. The words only registering when she got into the room. Her eyes searched the room. There were Nondwa everywhere, it reminded her of a time when she was sitting near her favorite body of water and watching the cloud of Nondwa flutter about over the water. Watching their own light reflect off the water.

With a huge smile Maya closed the distance between her and Teiluj. Kneeling down she wrapped her arms around her daughters shoulders. "Isn't the site lovely Teiluj, there's got to be roughly 20 of them all around us." She whispered.

Teiluj giggled when her mom wrapped arms around her. She loved the feeling of being so close and loved. Pointing to each Nondwa in turn Teiluj started counting. Reaching eight before getting frustrated and having to start over again. The continued to move. And as they moved they switched places. And Teiluj wasn't focusing on that many at a time, some would get lost in the corner of her vision or switch places with another. Completely throwing her off. She didn't like it one bit.

Huffing Teiluj turned around to hug her mother in return. "They can't stay here forever can they?" Teiluj asked looking up towards the falling dust again. Wondering just how long the dust would glow for. And if there were ways it could be added to clothing. Like a dye. To help add some permanent details to the walls. What if she was able to make the room glow like she was looking at the sky beyond the trees.

Maya grinned as Teiluj hugged her back. The youngling was becoming less affectionate as she grew. It made her heart ache but it was moments like these that she couldn't help but treasure. "I'm afraid they can't Teiluj." She paused looking up at them.

"But I think we can let them stay here at least until the rain stops, even if it stops just enough to let them find alternate shelter. They aren't meant to be here. There's not much food here for them. That I know of at least.

It's ok that you can't count them all right now Teiluj. Remember there will be Alkidike and earthling who you come across that will think you're like these Nondwa. They will see you as small and helpless, they will see you as just a child. Lets make it so that one day they will be surprised when they find out that a warrior will soon run wild within you. Prepare yourself Teiluj there are things that you will have to fight and they may be your greatest moments. But don't let the dreams that you always dream wilt away. Let them flower. You were my dream. I'm here to help you realize your own." Maya smiled and kissed the top of the younglings head.

Teiluj blinked at her mothers lecture. She didn't want anyone to see her like the Nondwa. Giggling when her mother kissed the top of her head Teiluj wiggled free of her mothers arms. Her eyes washed over the room. Amid some of the glowing dust, there was some dark lifeless kind of ash left behind. "Mamma look, what is this stuff?" Dipping her finger and attempting to scoop up some of the substance Teiluj held her finger up for maya to see.

Becoming easily distracted Teiluj noticed Starling had finally climbed up to where she was. "Look Starline, it's Nondwa. Lots and and lots of Nondwa!" Opening her hands wide Teiluj spun around in a circle excitedly, giggling.

Maya sighed and pulled her legs out in front of her as she sat on the floor with her daughter. Teiluj was either ignoring her, or not understanding what she was trying to say. She needed to start training Teiluj, Nondwa were obviously not the way to go and as she thought more about it. It didn't seem like Teiluj would be the type to take up the bow either. Closing her eyes to think Maya opened them as her daughter asked a question.

"Nondwa ash darling. It's what happens when the light fads in the dust. They don't glow forever." She smiled and closed her eyes when she realized that Teiluj wasn't really listening to her. She was headstrong. And she liked to be near things. Maybe training her in the way of the sword would be a better option.

Teiluj gave a loud yawn as she shivered and walked towards her mother. "I don't want to have to fight Nondwa. They are pretty, and I wish there was a way to keep their dust from turning dark like ashes."

Rubbing her eyes Teiluj snuggled up against Maya. "Mamma can I sleep with you? It's too bright in here with all the flying and the glowing..." The youngling yawned again. The day had been long. Full of adventure, travels and the trouble of rain. Full of learning and excitement. Just as every day had been. It was still a very good day and Teiluj was happy for the things she had experienced.

Just as she was closing her eyes Teiluj suddenly opened them again, She had remembered something the shifter girl had said to her. Kinfa grew large enough to carry people around! She didn't know that before, maybe that was why it took the bird so long to learn how to fly. "Mamma, I learned something a while ago. That Kinfa grow big enough to carry people." Closing her eyes again she returned to her dazed and sleepy state with yet another yawn.

Maya smiled and started humming when Teiluj approached in a sleepy manner. Wrapping her arms around her child in a warm loving embrace. "I would not make you hurt anything that wouldn't potentially hurt you back. Nondwa are passive and gentle, and so we should be the same towards them." Tightening her embrace Maya's humming grew louder.

The child was still small enough that Maya could easily lift her up and carry her towards another part of the tree. She would allow Teiluj to sleep with her tonight in the hammock. This way she wouldn't complain about the brightness, as the dark seemed to help the youngling sleep better. And partially because she wanted to enjoy what little time she had left of her daughters innocence. Kissing the top of her head when she neared her Hammock Maya smiled down as Teiluj spoke about the Kinfa.

To be honest she didn't know about how big the kinfa could grow either. She had just assumed the egg had been damaged and that was why Starline was unable to take flight. Not for lack of trying. Perhaps she would need to seek out a friend in Sauti or tale again just to get some more information. If Teiluj was correct about the size of the bird, and she did manage to find a Radaku to accompany her. Then the mixed blooded youngling, might just become a force to be reckoned with. That seemed to put her mind at ease.

"That is very interesting information Teiluj, if it's true. Then you need to take even better care of your companion. And start to teach it things. Help it grow strong."

Teiluj nodded at her mothers words. She wasn't aware that she was being lifted and carried out of the room. Or that she was being moved towards the center of the tree. All she knew was the bright world that the Nondwa had created in her room was fading. She could hear her mothers heart beat hard in her chest. Her mother was strong! And Teiluj wanted to be strong just like her. Maybe if she was able to train Starline just like Pacju was trained, then she could be one step closer to being just as strong as her mother.

She could feel the weight of a soft blanket being drapped over her as she was placed in the familiar hanging fabric. The type of fabric that enclosed around her, like a cocoon. Teiluj could hear her mothers lullaby and before she knew it, she was standing in a clouded field of dreams.
