Coming back empty handed after her first trip out into the woods did not go so well. When the other street kids inquired as to how it went, all Ebalia could do was keep her mouth shut. To them, this could only mean one thing: she came back with nothing, and they’d be right. The last thing she wanted was to admit that to them, of course. There was no way she was going to give them the satisfaction, so she just bit down on the inside of her lip and stayed silent. There was no way she’d tell what happened. One kid even had the nerve to laugh at her misfortune, and the Oblivionite did not like that at all. She almost ended up putting Lifedrinker straight through his hand, from the back of it through the palm, but she thought better of it. These kids were all she had, and the last thing she needed to do was maim one. Then all of them would hate her, and where would se be? Nowhere, that’s where.
A few days later, she made an executive decision for herself. She would go back to the Forests of Endeldarth and try her luck again. What could it hurt, right? Surely, she’d be luckier the second time around. What more could go wrong? “We’re going to kill one this time, Lifedrinker,” she said to her dagger the moment she saw the mushrooms of the forest within view. “I promise you that.” Though, in the back of her mind, the young apprentice couldn’t help but feel a twinge of uncertainty. Was she really going to get one this time? Surely, her chances would be better than the last time. Soudana would be on her side, watching over her. Ebalia had never been particularly spiritual, but she had to believe that, for if she didn’t, she had nothing.
The woods seemed a bit more welcoming then they had the last time. Creatures skittered this way and that, and Ebalia actually took notice as they went about their lives. The animals of Magesc were interesting ones; perhaps one day, she would try to tame some of her own. Who knew? A pet could be useful, as it’d give her someone to talk to aside from her dagger. Yet smaller creatures weren’t the reason she was there. Ebalia was after Ysali dragons again, and this time she was more determined than ever to succeed.
The dragon didn’t see her coming. It had been relaxing, allowing itself to get a drink of some fresh water, when all of a sudden it heard a slashing sound. Pain came next, and when it looked down, the Ysali realized it had a slash across one of its legs. Yes! She had managed to hit it! But the slash was just a mere scratch to the dragon. The moment it saw who had injured it, the dragon bolted, dashing off to another part of the forest so it could be far away from the cruel Oblivionite.
“Ugggh, seriously? I was so close!”
Although she was somewhat annoyed at her loss, she could see the rubies gleam on Lifedrinker. This caused the girl to roll her eyes. “Yes, yes,” she muttered, looking for another dragon to find, “I know you’re happy you got some blood, but we didn’t kill it. Don’t get all excited.” The words had just left her mouth when another Ysali came into view. This one, unlike the last, growled at the young girl and let out a predatory roar. It was not going to have any of what Ebalia was trying to do it.
The roar was more than enough. In a show of both glumness and defeat, the girl rose up her hands defensively, and then turned around to head back to Obsidian City. For a second time, she would be returning empty handed, and such a reminder burned in the pit of her stomach. The Oblivionite was not happy, and something needed to change. It was time to come up with a different battle plan.(Word Count: 67 cool
