Winter was coming to a close. Midnight could feel it. The thick snow that had fallen since the weather had turned cold was melting in the rapidly warming air. The melting snow would soon give way to allow for new life in the plants of the land, but all it did was remind Midnight that even after so long she was still alone. She’d arrived in these lands when the summer season was on its last legs and six months later she was still there simply watching the passage of time.
It hadn’t always been this way. Once Midnight had had a family of her own and they had been part of a much larger herd. To her knowledge all of them had been lost over the summer in a horrifying attack. She had fled with no other choice; it was leave or die. She had crashed in these lands and hadn’t left since then. There had been times that Midnight had thought of going back but she never had, she was afraid of what she might find there. Instead she had taken to wandering about aimlessly as if staying in one place for more than a day or two would only invite trouble. Six months and she had barely spoken a word to another soul. Somehow she hadn’t completely lost her mind but how long would that last?
Midnight picked her way through a snow covered field, the scenery looked familiar to her somehow but she couldn’t tell why. It looked nothing like her home had. That was certain.

Life had been rather dull for Malcolm since the summer, since before the summer if Malcolm was to be completely honest with himself. It felt like it had been years since his life had been anything even remotely resembling interesting. He wasn’t an old man yet but he often felt like one. Point of fact, the most interesting thing that had happened to him in the last year was helping a mare that had crash landed right in front of him about six months ago. Before that he’d played host to a young stallion named Deidren. The gap between the two incidences had been several years long.
Malcolm stood in the deep snow staring off at the sky as though it might drop another visitor at the entrance to his home. Aside from a few birds, however, there didn’t seem to be anything about. With a huff he started trudging through the snow out further into the open. Staying in a cramped cave day in and day out wasn’t his idea of a good time. The weather was nice for the season and a walk, even through the snow, was far more appealing than staying at home.

Several hours and many large snow balls clumped together in his coat later he found himself staring at a familiar shape. For several minutes he was certain that he was seeing things, she had flown off in such a flurry that he’d been certain that he’d never see her again and not just because she’d been on the brink of death when she left. It didn’t look like she had seen him but Malcolm didn’t want to let her pass without checking in.
“Midnight!” He called staying where he was.
Midnight nearly jumped out of her skin hearing someone call out her name. She looked about wildly until her eyes landed on the sandy brown stallion watching her.
“Malcolm…” She said. Suddenly she understood why the place looked familiar, this was where she had landed.

It was definitely her, not that Malcolm had ever really had a doubt about her identity. What he did doubt was how welcome he was to say anything to her. He was beyond thrilled to see that she was alive. She looked like she had seen a ghost and one that she had hoped to never see again at that. He hesitated to move towards Midnight at first, as usual she didn’t seem to want him around, but he was still concerned about her.
In the end he decided that he would keep the visit as short as Midnight wanted but he needed to at least check in. “I’m glad to see you again.” He said amiably started to walk towards her. “Are you doing well?” The meeting was likely to be short lived if she didn’t just bolt from the start. If he wanted to get any news from her it would be best to make that his first priority.

Should I run? The simple thought crossed through Midnight’s mind as Malcolm began to amble his way towards her. It would probably make things easier for her. She wasn’t sure that she was ready to be around other people just yet. Midnight shifted uneasily. He had been kind to her when she had first crashed. He had tended to her and respected her wishes to not be followed. Perhaps she wasn’t ready to be around people yet but surely she owed this stallion something, even if just a small conversation. That would be all she could manage and hopefully that would be enough for him.
“I’m… well enough.” She said solemnly. It was true whether he’d believe it or not. Physically she was fine. Maybe she didn’t sleep much anymore and perhaps she ate less days but she’d recovered from her crash injuries long ago. There was no damage to worry over. Anything that truly was wrong with her she didn’t care to discuss with Malcolm, or anyone else for that matter.

Malcolm had managed to get an answer out of her. It wasn’t a great answer nor was it particularly satisfactory but that she’s said anything at all was nothing short of miraculous. With the trauma she had endured Malcolm wasn’t offended that she wasn’t in a chatty mood. He suspected she might never find herself in a chatty mood again and so long as she was actually taking care of herself that was okay, he supposed. Unfortunately it didn’t actually look like she was taking care of herself. The poor thing looked completely worn down. She had always been slender but she seemed even thinner than she had when they had initially met.
“Midnight.” He paused, what exactly could he say to her? ‘Take care of yourself’? That could only end poorly. She hadn’t wanted him involved in the first place and now he was interfering with her life again. That was almost certainly how she would see it. “If you need anything, anything at all, you can always come to me for help.” Malcolm said slowly, softly. He felt that this was the best he could do given the circumstances. If she ignored his offer, well, at least he had tried.

Midnight narrowed her eyes a fraction and flicked her ears back at the sound of her name. She wasn’t convincing anyone that she was actually fine, she wasn’t really trying that hard to, but she also wasn’t inviting meddlesome intent. It didn’t matter how well intentioned it was. What Malcolm actually ended up saying surprised Midnight to the point that she had to run over it in her mind not once, but twice to make sure that she had heard him right.
That was it? Just an offer to come to him if she ever needed anything? It was quite a broad offer, anything could be, well, anything. She had been expecting him to insist that she see one of his healer friends or talk about what she was going through or something else ridiculous and invasive. This was both surprisingly charitable and also unusually passive from what she had learned about this stallion in the few hours she had spent in his company. As such it left her staring at him completely speechless.

She wasn’t responding. Malcolm was worried that he had stepped way over the boundaries of what was acceptable once again. Midnight was just staring at him silently. He thought about taking back his offer in an attempt to undo whatever he had just done to offend her but couldn’t bring himself to do it. He had meant what he had said even if he had somehow upset her in offering. If he had offended her pride and she hated him forever then at least he had tried to do the right thing by her. That was all he really could do.
“I live in the area.” He continued as though she wasn’t still staring at him with a complete look of shock on her face. “In a rock cave, over that way.” He nodded his head in the direction he had come from. His trail was still easily visible in the snow. The path wound around a bit but it was easy enough to determine the start of it. Midnight still hadn’t moved and he was beginning to think that it was about time he head off somewhere else so that she could live her own life again. “I do mean it, Midnight, if you need anything, even if it’s just a place to get out of the wind or snow for an hour or two. Just come find me.”

Midnight realized that her stunned silence was leaving Malcolm to just keep talking to himself but she couldn’t seem to find the words she needed to reply. Nothing he was saying was making it any easier for Midnight to speak. There was no doubt that she had, in fact, heard him correctly and it was abundantly clear that he meant every word of it. They barely knew each other and he was offering his help and even his home as though they were old friends. It was strange, she had been isolating herself for so long to hide from the evil in her memories that she had almost forgotten that people could be good for no reason other than to be good.
When he started to turn away Midnight finally found the words she had been looking for. “Thank you!” She said quite suddenly as she took a short step towards the stallion. “I-” Her voice faltered. She what? She wasn’t going to go home with him or anything. She was touched by his offer of charity but that didn’t mean she was ready to be near to people just yet. No, she would just remember it and maybe one day she would return. No, she definitely would, if only to thank him more properly.
“I will keep it in mind. Thank you, Malcolm. Really. Thank you.” She said nodding her head in a grateful gesture. It was all she felt able to do for the moment so it would have to be good enough.

Malcolm stopped when Midnight finally spoke up and it was his turn to be surprised. She was thanking him. He couldn’t stop the absolutely childish smile that spread over his lips. He hadn’t offended her after all. Malcolm couldn’t even begin to describe what a relief that was and to top it all off it seemed like she may even take him up on his offer eventually. That was all he could have hoped for.
“You’re welcome, Midnight.” He said softly returning her polite nod with one of his own.
Midnight straightened up and continued to watch Malcolm as he finished speaking. An awkward silence set in. They had both said their piece and it didn’t seem like either of them had anything more to say. Midnight shifted her wings slightly and looked around hoping for some distraction. There was nothing.
“I should… be on my way.” She said hesitantly. She didn’t really have anywhere to be but standing here uncomfortably was doing no one any favors.
“Oh, yes, please. Don’t let me keep you.” Malcolm replied clumsily. “I should be heading home anyway.” It was a lie and he got the feeling that while they would both recognize the lie they would also both appreciate it. “It was good seeing you again, take care of yourself.” He added.
“Yes, yes it was. Thank you, Malcolm.” Somehow Midnight felt like she should say something more but didn’t want to prolong the uncomfortable parting any more than she had to. “Goodbye. For now.” She bowed her head again before turning and walking off making certain to keep her head facing away lest she start another conversation by accident.
“Goodbye, Midnight.” Malcolm smiled as he watched Midnight go. Things had gone far better than he had anticipated.
