It must have been three am, Eliot mused, as he headed towards the kitchen. He'd awoken to the the apartment being dark and silent, something that never happened when someone was awake. It was too small, the place wasn't exactly sound proof. He could always hear when someone was moving. He swept past Connie, as quietly as possible; the tauros was sleeping on the couch in the living room.

He filled up a glass from the tap, turning and facing the television as he took a swallow. He froze. The reflection in the tv screen was vague and blurry, but that--he made his way into the bathroom. As soon as his eyes found the mirror, he froze. He'd grown! And evolved! No wonder he'd woken to a dry mouth; a change like that must have taken a lot of out of him. What was he supposed to do now? The apartment had already been too small, but now he was bigger. Everything would be too small. His clothes, the bed, everything.

He needed money. Mind made up, he left the small apartment. He knew he'd have to return, to gather his things, to explain to Mei, and Connie, and Brenny.

Mei had slept without waking for once at the smallest of sounds like she was known to. She had worked especially hard that day doing some dog walking and such to earn extra money which she had given to Connie to help out with various bills and expenses. She could see he was working too hard trying to support so many of them and so she did all she could to lessen his burdens.

When she did finally wake there was a soft groan from her due to a sore shoulder. A dog had attempted to break away and she'd been jerked more than once, leaving her with a sore shoulder today. Easing from the room quietly so she wouldn't wake the boys she made her way into the bathroom and cleaned up a bit and stepped out, deftly preparing breakfast for all of them as she tended to do.

It wasn't until she'd gone to get Brenny and Eliot up that she realized Eliot was gone.

Leaving her food untouched she went searching for him, calling him him with no response.

Where could he be? This wasn't like him at all, and it left her more than a little concerned for his where abouts and well being. Was he okay? Why had he left like this?

Her worry was such that she barely tasted her food as she ate, staring at the door waiting for Eliot to walk through.

She didn't realize she'd have a long wait ahead of her.

It was a week later that Eliot returned to the apartment. He hadn't realized getting a job would be so difficult; it'd taken him two days to convince the woman at the community swimming pool that he was the best for the job. He'd been surprised at the need for an application. He'd been more surprised when she had asked for experience. He had dutifully filled it out, telling the woman there that this would be his first job.

That seemed to be the right thing to say; he was hired. Paid by the hour, every four days. He was paid for the first two, having missed most of the pay period. Awkward. It wasn't very much money. Not enough to get them a place to stay! He wasn't sure they could eat on this, either. His second paycheck, it'd gone to putting something down on a two room apartment. He couldn't wait to show Mei!

"Hey, Mei," he greeted her, awkwardly, as he wandered inside. He felt awful, about not leaving a note. He knew he should have. He'd wanted so badly to get a job, to earn money so Mei could be happy, that he'd forgotten that he might be missed. "I'm home."

Hehe thanks for saying Mei can beat Eliot up for a moment...

Mei had been looking all over for Eliot for a week, and had come to the conclusion he'd up and left. Of course she'd considered similar over time, knowing that Connie's home was too full of people, that it wasn't fair the teen slept on a couch. But it wasn't something she was able to do yet. No where wanted to hire her because she was "just a kid" which pissed her off since she knew better.

Sure she did odd jobs here and there, but nothing that would allow her to move out, and be less of a strain on Connie's income and resources. Maybe Eliot had felt similar and left. Though it didn't keep her from looking for him with concern.

After a week of nothing, she was convinced he wasn't coming back. She was moody, snapping at Brenny, and anyone, really. Barely touching her food when she bothered to eat at all. She missed Eliot...but she was mad. Angry. Hurt.

He'd left without a word.

She wanted to hurt someone, mostly Eliot for leaving like he did.

She was lost in thought, and so didn't hear the door open and when she did she didn't recognize the teenager standing there. All she saw was a stranger that had gotten into their house, and she was moving with speed, eyes narrowed as she flung her arm out as if throwing stars...which in a way she was since she was using Swift. As they flew across the room towards the intruder, she was following suit, bouncing off furniture with ease, before leaping at the tall stranger at the door.

It wasn't until she felt her fist connect with a face, that she was moving again, intent on using Pound, and beating the guy into a mess on the floor. It wasn't until she was that close though that she felt herself hesitating a moment, and she sprung away from him, landing in a defensive crouch.

"Eliot!?"

His name a low hiss of disbelief and anger as she stared at him. She was pissed. So very. very pissed.

An attack wasn't how he'd expected to be greeted. A hug, maybe. A "Eliot I missed you!" And since he hadn't expected a negative reaction, he did nothing to stop it. "Well. Hello to you too," he said, wincing from the attack. Ouch. Swift, he'd have to remember to avoid Mei when she was angry. Swift was quickly followed by Mei, who was nearly as swift as the attack. Her fist connected with his face and threw him off albalance. Okay. So she was really mad. Really mad. And probably would never forgive him, judging by the strength she'd put behind that punch.

He put a hand to his cheek, hoping to avoid further blows. If it came to it, he knew he wouldn't be able to fight her. He was surprised when she called him by name, blinking. Wait. She hadn't recognized him? Maybe he had a chance to explain. Maybe she wasn't as angry at him as she'd seemed, then. "Yeah," he said, regaining his balance. "I'm Eliot. Evolved and took the chance to get out, got a job, put a down payment on an apartment." He moved towards her, hoping to pull her in for a hug. "I want you to come live with me," he said. "Its not far from here, and it isn't very big, but there's enough room for you and me. Even when you grow."

Ooh. No, she was angry. He hadn't recognized the tone at first. Instead of backing away, he look another step forward. "I wanted It to be a surprise."

"You left us without a word! We didn't know where you were. When you were coming back. Or if you even were coming back! You left us! You left me!" there was angry tears in her eyes, and trickling down her cheeks.

"I was scared to death when we woke up and you weren't here and there wasn't a note. Then you didn't come home...didn't call...and you come waltzing in here a week later expecting me to be happy to see you? To be okay with you vanishing like you did!?"

She wasn't yelling, her voice was quiet, but full of pain. She had honestly begun to think he wasn't coming back at all, and that she'd been left behind again. First her original trainer, who'd died before Brenny had ever found her...then him.

Though she listened to his words, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand trying to keep her emotions in check. "A place for us?" how surprised she sounded. She looked around the too small for them all apartment, and back to him. "It would help Connie out a lot to have us not be here. This place is too small for us all...and with less of us here, he wouldn't have to work so hard...." she worried for the teen she considered to be her best friend!

"Don't ever do that again...leave without a note...." she was still angry about that and not entirely sure she wouldn't punch him again!

Eliot knew nothing he said could take away the pain he'd caused her. He hadn't meant to, he'd only intended to leave, get a job, and return. He took another step forward, moving to wrap his arms around her. "I'm sorry," he murmured. "I wasn't thinking. You're right. I should've left a note. But you know. I'd never really leave you. I got the place so we'll always be together. I don't know how long the job will last but if it doesn't I'll find another one."

He agreed with her. Connie would probably stress less if they weren't there. "We'll come visit all the time," he assured her. He knew the bond the two shared, he wasn't about to sever it. "I won't." It was a promise. He would never leave Mei again, not after this. Not after he'd seen how much it hurt her. "I'm sorry, I won't leave." He raised a hand to wipe at her tears. "Want to see it? The apartment I mean. We can't move in yet, I don't think. Not till I pay the first month's rent, but I think you'll like it."

Mei tensed up as he wrapped his arms around her, and she pushed away at his arms, only to realize that with his growing up, he'd gotten stronger than her as a result, and so the attempt was an exercise in futility. It took a few moments longer for her to stop fighting the hold, and to lean into him just barely. "Didn't know that...." words soft.

Her arms finally came up, and wrapped around him tightly, hugging him fiercely before she was socking him in the back, and biting his arm. "You leave me like that again, then I'm going to hunt you down, and turn you into...into Gyrados soup!" she huffed slightly, not at all apologetic about the punch to his back, or or biting him.

There was a soft sniffle from her and she brought her annoyance back under control, back under the wraps and trappings of training and took a deep breath and held it before letting it out slowly. "Lets write a note to the others so they know we'll be back, then yes, I'd like to see it please." at least she didn't seem so angry anymore. That had to be a plus.

"Well, now you do," Eliot said. He didn't release his hold on her, he'd missed her. "Don't forget it." Gyrados soup? The threat had him grinning. "If I do, you have my full permission to do so. But I wont," he assured her. Having her in front of him was like a sudden jolt: he was realizing how much he'd missed her. Her voice of reason, her work ethic, her presence.

"You bit me," he observed, after a moment. Bit and hit. Huh. It was clear She was still upset.

Yup. She'd sniffled. He hugged her again, nodding in agreement. "Of course. Do you want to write it?"

"Meh. I won't forget it." she was trying to hold onto her gruff demeanor, and only barely just managing, really. "Okay...so long as we're clear on what happens to you if you leave like that again..." words muttered against his shoulder a moment.

"Yes I did! You're lucky I didn't bite you harder!" she could have drawn blood if she'd bitten harder. She hugged him back and nodded. "Yeah I'll write him the note. Then we can go take a look and all."

"I won't," he assured her again, briefly tightening his hold on her. "I'll never leave you again." Not if he could help it, not after he'd seen how much pain leaving her for a few days caused. "Gyrados soup," he nodded, as she told him to remember what he'd end up as if he left again. "You could serve me up to all of your friends, if you like. I don't think I'd taste particularly good, though."

He released his hold, indicating that she should write the note. "Go on," he said. "I want to show you the place. You'll like it."
