Rutledge Asylum has stood in the middle-of-nowhere in Oklahoma for almost a century to date. It has never been known for cruelly treating patients. In fact, it was one of the best Asulyms someone could ever go to. The orderlies and doctors were kind, patient, and understanding. The patients appreciated the help and recovered in record time. There were no cases of mistreatment, no lobotomies to keep patients in line. It was the heaven of Asylums.

Just a year ago, people went into the Asulym and never returned. These weren't patients going in, they were visitors and family. Even, at times, new doctors. Attempts to find them came empty-handed when nothing was recovered. Still, many felt that something dark and sinister had begun to take hold of Rutledge. After all, so many felt that it's perfect record would quickly become tainted. Had it happened so soon?

You are part of a team of investigators, journalists, and detectives who have been sent to Rutledge to find out why no one has returned. There are reports of the lights flickering on and off, screams, and other ungodly things. Be warned, it may be worse than you may have imagined. Keep on your toes and make sure to collect all the information you can.

This RP is themed off of the video game Outlast. Please use this for reference when it comes to the plot. That being said, it is not completely the same. The survival horror aspect is the same, but there will be changes. Use this video game, and those like it, when needed.

This will be violent and graphic, it is the nature of such a thread. If you are uncomfortable with this, I recommend you reconsider joining. However, this will not be as violent as Outlast was, and will mostly focus on the survival aspect of the game.

While there is no set limit for the amount of characters you can make, I recommend only using one. This is mostly because the group entering the Asulym is small, only about 6-8 people.

Anyone can walk into this RP and leave at any time, although I encourage everyone to stay. You can begin posting right away, but do read through previous posts to understand what has been uncovered, where characters are, and what is going on before posting.

Use a real life picture for your profile picture. It can be any successful actor, musician, comedian, or even any Tumblr user you want. The picture can change from post to post, but make sure it is the same person used each time.

To help keep track of who is posting, since there are no direct profiles, please make sure to use your real-person picture and their full name on each post. I recommend making a basic banner to sort this problem. You can also add things like "supplies", "people in company", "feeling", and other such details underneath. Because no profiles are posted, you are required to provide information over the course of the RP, but only when it is necessary to the plot to advance. For an example of a banner, see the "spoiler" below.

If your character dies off, for any reason, this does not mean you cannot continue the RP. You can make an Asylum patient or even an outsider who came in to help.

Please keep in mind that if you are absent from posting in the RP for an extended period of time, without explaination, your character will either go missing or be killed off, depending on how the plot of the RP is advancing. Should you return, you can resume playing your missing character and have them return to the group or you can have them go solo for a while. It's up to you. Regardless, please inform Nightmare Dreamcatcher or VSG12 if you are planning to leave so the plot can work around your character's absence.

Please invite friends!

Many people think that some kind of virus was let into the Asylum, triggering a lock-down that people unknowingly walked into. Others think that it may be a biological warfare strategy, using untested and highly unstable chemicals on the patients to see the outcome. Regardless of the cause, the fact is clear that these are no longer humans within the walls. They are primal creatures with cannibalistic tenancies.

Patients will attack each other, only few forming into groups. Some are insanely strong, others are fast, and some "hunt" in packs. You must be wary of them all, as they are dangerous and possibly contagious. You only have minimal medical supplies and you aren't a professional fighter. If they come towards you, keep your distance and keep them back. If not, run and hope they cannot keep up. Otherwise, hide. Hide and find a way out.

They are sensitive to light and seem to be nocturnal. Use anything that can produce bright light; flash-lights or even the flash of a camera. The "patients" seem to be less active during the day, being active predominantly at night. Use the sunlight to your advantage and spare using anything that takes battery power, as they might not last long.

The van came to a stop outside the shining gates of Rutledge Asulym and Carolina Kenda looked out the window of the passenger seat. Everyone in the van was sent there for a reason. To find out what was happening to those who went inside to check on the patients. The outside of the Asylum looked very normal. The walls and windows were clean and polished, the gates standing perfectly. Curtains blew in the breeze from open windows and the entire building looked normal. But something put Carolina on edge, so she looked for something, anything wrong. The grass was unkept and there were several wheelchairs abandoned in the yard, but it wasn't serious. The only sounds she could hear were her companions talking, the wind blowing, and faint music playing from the Asulym.

"Are we getting this over with?" she asked as she put her trusty camera into her hand and reached to open the door.

Her companions nodded and disembarked from the van. The driver, a male in his early 20's, locked the van and put the keys in a zip pocket on his green vest. He was a journalist from Oklahoma City who was renowned for uncovering the truth on shady matters. She envied most of her companions; professionals in their own rights. She was just a photography student fresh out of University in Fort Worth, Texas who was assigned to the case. She hoped if she got enough details to uncover the truth she might be able to make it into the field she loved. But this place put her on edge. Was it seriously worth the risk?

"Is the gate unlocked?" she asked when they came to it.

The driver pushed it open with one hand and she sighed. She wanted it to be locked so she could go home. Regardless, she knew someone would have climbed the fence or found some way in. She just wanted a reason to leave. She followed after the others, looking around as if she was trying to see someone. No one was around, not in the hallways or anything. It wasn't a prison, shouldn't people be outside? As they got to the main door, they had to squeeze through since it had been barricaded. Carolina found that extremely odd, since everything looked so fine on the outside. Once she got through, something brushed past her shoulder.

She looked to her right and for a moment saw a person there. Next thing she knew the door slammed behind her and a bookshelf fell in the way. She flung her small camera hanging from around her neck and clicked the shutter several times. Something hissed and retreated into the darkness. She let her breathing return to normal before she glanced to her comrades. They were as puzzled as she was.

"What was that? Who was that?" one of the men asked.

She looked at her camera footage and only saw a male, ragged and deranged, smothered in blood with a sinister smile, in each shot. She shivered and showed the others. As she looked up, she noticed the interior was covered in blood, pools of it everywhere, with writing everywhere. Most of it didn't even make sense.

"C-can we leave?" she asked.

They tried the doors, but it wouldn't open and the bookshelf was too heavy to move. The windows were boarded up and the music had stopped. It was like someone was using it as a siren call to lure them in. And now they were trapped. Trapped like rats. Or lambs to the slaughter.

I had lead the way from the van and into the Asylum with confidence and swagger. As a 28 year old professional journalist, I am used to fabricated stories based more on fiction than fact. I had let my mind become eased by the comforting exterior of the building. The interior took the life right out of me. Carolina saw the blood, but I saw the corpses and disembodied corpses laying about the floor. I didn't want Carolina to see, so he tried to keep her preoccupied. My mind kept going to the pictures of the one patient on her camera. Why was he covered in so much blood? Was he a victim of the crimes or the perpetrator. I shuddered just thinking about it. What if every patient in here was as psychotic and aggressive as that.....thing. I wouldn't even call it a person.

Carolina asked it the door could be opened. We all tried the doors and windows but nothing worked at all. It was like someone had drawn us in and we took the bait. I slid my hand through my hair that wasn't covered by my beanie. I took my sunglasses off and looked around the room. Sunlight was the only thing illuminating the corridors, but I knew it wouldn't last long. The afternoon sun was already beginning to set.

"I'd get as many pictures from here and get the heck outta this place. I don't know about you, but evidence of what we see in this room should get the military involved. This is beyond what we can do," I breathed out. Like Carolina, I didn't want to stay another minute longer.

Carolina turned to the person closest to her, a journalist/photographer named Rowan Seidel. He was close to her age, her being 23. She didn't know why she turned to him in particular, but as she did something caught her eye. Objects sticking out of the pools of blood. She couldn't see them extremely well in the dim light so she took several pictures with the flash on. As she did, her eyes watched the foreground ahead of her. Body parts lit up as the camera flashed continuously.

She didn't hold back her scream, dropping her camera from her hands and letting it fall into her body since it was still hanging from her neck. She retreated backwards and almost went into the broken bookcase before Rowan caught her and drew her in close. She held on to him as she tried to shake out the memory of what she had just seen.

"W-what the hell is g-going on here!?" she whispered as the others looked around for any way out of the Asylum.

Her blonde-hair stuck to her face from the sweat and her pale blue eyes had grown big in fear. She wanted to get into the van parked outside the main gates and high-tail it out of there. She was scared for her life and had every right to be. The evidence right there and then was, as Rowan had said, enough to get the military involved. They just needed to find a way out and get to the van.

She knew it wouldn't be easy now. If the doors and windows were barricaded there was a reason. Either something was being kept in or others were meant to be kept out. Carolina understood it was a mistake to join this case and now regretted. What she wouldn't give to be at her home in Texas. Away from the horrors she had witnessed.

I sighed when Caroline saw the body parts strewn across the floor. It disheartened me to realise that she had caught on to the catastrophe surrounding us. What I didn't understand was why everything was so torn apart on the inside but how clean it was on the outside. Maybe whoever was at fault for what was going on did so to attract more people inside. To trap them before something happened. Regardless, things were getting out of hand and we had to find a way out. Then the thought came to me.

"What if we try upstairs? Maybe a window is uncovered and we can get out. Not a grand escape and trust me not the best option, but we don't have a lot to go on. We have more than enough pictures to get someone else to clean this mess and I'd rather be at home right about now," I stated as I handed Caroline a tissue. Poor thing.

We all gathered our belongings, and our wits, and walked to the main staircase. It was made of stone, but the slippery nature of the steps caught us all off-guard. I looked down with my flashlight and realised it wasn't blood, but water. Why was water leaking? I looked above me and saw water pouring down from the ceiling like a waterfall onto the stairs. Was it to make the steps unusable or simply coincidence? I didn't trust anything about this place so I cautioned the others to mind their steps.

Reaching the second floor we came face to face with a dead body chained to the gates and a camera hanging from their neck. I let out a gasp and held my breath, expecting Caroline to scream. To my amazement, she was remarkably calm in this instant. I reached out and took the camera, pausing to make sure the person, a young man, spring to life. I scrolled through the footage to find more and more evidence to condemn this place to Hell. I slid the extra camera into my bag and carefully opened the gate. I didn't want to alarm whatever was within earshot. None of us wanted to encounter what we had at the front door.

I was usually a background character, I'd blend in easily with my surroundings and kept my mind to myself. Ever since I had left the army, i rarely spoke to anyone unless required to. Before I was Enlisted, photography and journaling was a hobby of mine, so helping reporters was a good way to cope W with the past. But this situation was bringing out the solider I buried inside me so long ago. The blood on the walls and the strewn body parts almost tossed carelessly across the floor was enough to activate my PTSD to the point where I was flashbacking.

The battlefield I had once been a part of was trying to become a reality. Though I had retired pretty young at the age of 29, I still experienced the battlefield in my dreams haunting me by night, and in reality flashes like the ones I was experiencing now. The were getting so bad that I didn't realize we went up the stairs till I flashed out on the third step from the top.

I couldn't let it affect me now. Not in this situation. We had just spotted a inhuman monster that seemed eager to kill, and there could be more. Taking a deep breath, I attempted to brush the horror from my eyes and pushed the two out of the way, taking my gun from my right side out and waving it in front of them so they could see. "You guys are lucky I decided to carry today. Let me take the lead."

I eased when one of our group, Aeron, pulled out a gun. At least one of us had a firearm. I knew Caroline only had a small pocket knife, which might help pick locks but wasn't a useful weapon. As for me, I only had a lighter. Maybe I could torch the patients here if they became violent towards us? I honestly hoped they were only aggressive towards one another. My thoughts went to that poor soul chained to the gate and knew that was a lie. We were on our own trapped with these.....things.

"Go ahead, Ace," I breathed.

Giving a nickname seemed to take the tension out of the air. Caroline snickered to the name and I smiled. It was working. I was mostly concerned for her, the only female present at the time. It must be hard for a recent University graduate to deal with these things. I did stories that held a lot of gruesome details, but nothing like this. Hell, I did a story on the Waverly Hills Sanatorium and that place felt like a vacation compared to this place.

"Some on, Kiddo, let's not keep Ace waiting on us," I told her as I pulled her along after Aeron. He seemed to know what he was doing, which was more than I could say for myself. I shown my flashlight around, keeping an eye out for movement. I really didn't want to run into more patients. If you'd call them that at all.

Carolina listened to Aeron and Rowan talking. When Rowan began giving out nicknames, it did calm her down a little. She hated being called Kiddo but she was the younger out of the three of them, she knew that much. She held her camera in front of her, ready to flash her camera if need be. She knew the patient withdrew from the light of her camera, so maybe they were sensitive to the light? Maybe that was why everything was boarded up on the inside.

"Do you think maybe these things hate light? That thing drew back when I used my camera and the windows are all boarded up inside....it wouldn't be a big stretch," she mentioned.

When she made her statement, the others stopped for a moment. "That's a good point, Detective Kenda," Rowan teased. She knew he was referring to the Colorado Springs homicide detective Lieutenant Joe Kenda and she snickered to it. She liked the nickname Detective Kenda better than Kiddo.

"Do.....do you think we'll encounter any more of them, Aeron?" Carolina asked as she looked to the shadows of the room. She felt like she'd shine her light on eyes glaring at her, but to her relief she only saw blank walls smothered in blood.

Aeron stepped carefully, the visions of war thankfully no longer clouding his sight. "I'm gonna be honest with you, sweetheart," He spoke firmly. "I don't think that's the last we'll see of that monster," Gripping the gun tightly with his finger hovering over the trigger, he scanned the halls before moving. The others seemed quite timid, but Aeron was under control, which he had basic training to thank for that.

Slowly going down a dark hall with the two, he saw them flashing a light on the walls that only felt like they were getting tighter. They found a couple doors after a while of slowly searching through the halls, but each appeared to be locked. Cursing under his breath, they continued. Carolina had offered her knife a few times as a pick, but he didn't wanna risk the possibility of her needing it to protect herself.

They found another door once again and Aeron pressed himself against the wall. "Get against the wall..." he muttered softly to them.

Obeying his command, once they were clear, he tried the door. It was also locked, but the inner solider inside him screamed that not giving up was the way he needed to go. He raised his leg and kicked at the doorknob, which came off with ease, meaning the hinges were probably matching. He kicked the door using all his weight and it fell awkwardly into the room.

When she saw Aeron kick in the door, she didn't know what would happen. Rowan had jumped out with his flashlight and caught one of the patients in the middle of the room, chomping on a body. The thing turned and shielded it's eyes from the light. Snarling, it leapt up. Rowan had no weapon, so he merely shown his light in it's face. Aeron fired and killed the thing in one go. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief.

Just as she was about to step into the room after them, something grabbed her ponytail. She was about to scream when her body took over. She reached into her pocket, pulled out her pocket-knife, and jammed it into whoever was holding her. A blood-curdling hiss followed and her hair was released. Carolina spun on her heels and took several pictures with her cameras extremely-bright flash settings. The patient retreated into the darkness.

"Turns out you were right," she breathed out as she blinked.

s**t, my only weapon is gone, she thought to herself as she stepped into the room to be with Rowan and Aeron. And the others. She looked at the shot patient and glanced around the room. She noticed a computer screen and turned it on. There were documents on the screen. She overlooked them and tried to see if there was anything that could be of use. All she could find was a doctor mentioning that patients given this new drug to cure schizophrenia were becoming worse. Could that have been the cause?

"You guys might wanna come see this," she called out.

Aeron breathed heavily, holding his gun with the finger still on the trigger. The bullet was starting to bring the memories of war back, but he desparately tried to get the thoughts out of his mind. The thought of the people he watched die by his side...

Shaking his head, he forced the memories out and locked them inside once agsin. He looked to Rowan, who seemed frozen in shock because of what happened so quickly. He felt bad for the poor soul, because of how pale he was. He could tell that the young man had probably not seen anything as gruesome in his life. Trembling and still holding dangerously to the gun, he grabbed Rowans shoulder and shook him a bit, patting him on the back to cover up his own fear. "It's alright, kid. You'll be alright,"

When Carolina had asked him to come he snapped out of his nightmaresh fantasy and went to her at the computer, taking his finger off the trigger but holding it firmly in his hands. Falling down to his knees next to her, he didn't look at the screen, but at the beautiful blond woman in front of her. "Are you hurt," he asked. "Are you okay, Carolina?"
