Normally Rep liked a bit of pod duty, it meant some quiet time on his own down in the very bowels of the facility, he could sit and doodle, or if he felt a little more bold, read and no one would have any reason to bother him. The only problem he had was the tendency, for whatever reason for people to wake up on his shift, on one shift a year ago he managed to wake up about four or five trainees in one go. It had been distressing and had of course interrupted his reading that day too.

That day it had been a relatively quiet Tuesday all told, and he had assumed that there was surely going to be no trouble at all. He'd fished out his glasses and a recent gaming magazine extolling the virtues of the desktop PC he would probably ******** never have with such a shitty salary and sat to read.

He'd been reading a while before the flashing alarm light on one of the pods made him look up.

"Oh for ******** sake they better be ******** dying." he grumbled.

Quite the contrary, someone was living.

The hiss of air as the pod unsealed itself was loud, louder than it should have been. Significant, in that it was the first sound she'd heard in only God knew how long.

Or was it?

Goosebumps raced across pale skin as the temperature shifted, cooler, almost damp. Different in a way that had the woman squinting into the dim light and flinching away when even that proved too bright for eyes that hadn't seen light in ages. It took a moment for the sting to fade to something tolerable enough to let her take a good look at her surroundings, but once she did those dark eyes widened. "Woah."

Pods. Rows and rows of pods with glowing monitors that flickered with names and dates, and the familiar bouncing lines and numbers that you saw on hospital equipment. Was she dreaming? It wasn't unlikely, not with the sort of far-fetched beliefs and ideas that swam around in her head, but this didn't feel like a dream.

It felt very much real, and she was reaching out for the edge of her pod, leaning around it so she could get a look at the monitor that had her own name glowing in 8-bit lettering when she heard the heavy beat of feet falls coming towards her.

"Augh its a ******** woman." Rep said in obvious disappointment as he took in the contents of the open pod. "Why is it always ******** bitches they recruit seriously?"

He gruffly crossed his arms. "Welcome ******** back to the land of the waking. The good news, you get to actually wake up and no be flushed out like some waste water from a toilet, the bad news, you are probably going to be fighting from now till the day you die. Hope you like fighting. And weird s**t. There's going to be a lot of ******** weird s**t."

He looked over her name, raising a brow. "So. Gretchen. Can you hear me? Can you see all right? Do you have the ******** feeling in your limbs? Cause if you can't do any of those things you might just be completely ********. I'm Rep, by the way."

It wasn't so much the tone of voice that had Gretchen staring, but the sate of the man that stalked into view. Almost violently ginger(and probably violent in general, she got the impression), with a patch of white hair on one side, scars riddling face and what little she could see of his upper chest. He seemed practically feral as he barked at her, and it took a moment to focus on his words instead of the lines of scar tissue that zig-zagged across his face.

"Well that's a relief, yeah?" Gretch hadn't quote followed what he'd said, but the gist of it seemed to indicate that she should count herself lucky to be alive and awake. This, she firmly believed, was cause for delight. "Well, maybe not the perpetual fighting bit, but. You know." She tried to shrug, found she could, and smiled as her shoulders rolled.

Another blink as he started asking questions, and she nodded. "Yes, I can hear you fine, my eyes appear to be working so long as you are, in fact, a slightly taller than average red haired man with some badass scars." A little gentle ribbing probably wouldn't hurt, right? Right.

That last question had her smiling turning up a notch. "So it's a problem if I can't feel my left leg from the knee down?" A pause. "Rep." Interesting name, but she supposed it fit. He didn't look like a Joe or a Larry.

"Aye. And the fighting isnae so bad all told. We are superhumanly strong." There were a few new looking bruises about his cheeks and neck and with the slightly frazzled sleep deprived look he had about him, the question of superhuman strength looked slightly dubious.

"You sound intact." he stated. "Though I would also have accepted ginger a*****e who swears too much or the ever popular crazy psychopath." Finally his gaze trailed across her body and down to her left leg, realising with a toothy grin his mistake in asking if she could feel all of her limbs. "Well I think that one is a wee bit ******** beyond help. You are going to have a lot of fun on the battlefield, we urnae pirates you know, we don't like, accommodate for peg legs."

He shook his head. "******** hell they really will recruit anything."

PostPosted: Tue Feb 03, 2015 6:51 pm

Dubious indeed, and a brow edged up as evidence. She did withhold doubt, for now, since she had just woken up in a pod surrounded by other pods in what looked like some kind of underground lab, or something equally nefarious.

She chuckled. "I beg your pardon, sir. This is not a peg." The prosthetic in question was lifted, as if to give him a better look at it. All sleek and shiny stainless at the core, but the fairing was mirrored chrome and mat black. "This is top of the line. The very best in all-terrain traversing." The leg was lowered again, and her weight shifted to her opposite hip as she crossed her arms. "I can pretty much anything a normal person can, short of wiggling my toes or rotating my ankle at will."

Dark eyes held his gaze for a few long seconds more before skirting off around them again. "So where exactly am I?" Somewhere different to be sure. Superhuman strength, fighting, recruitment?

Curious indeed.

Rep raised a brow at the prosthetic, giving it a critical once over. "Still might as well be a peg though. And I'm sure some pirates could do lots of s**t too. It just might land you in trouble because we get asked to do a lot of s**t that normal humans can't do either. I mean how would you be on ice with that thing? I've had to scrabble up sheet ice to get away from a titan one time." He figured it was worth warning her, but she'd probably find out in her own time.

"You are on a non-existant island in bermuda. Doesn't appear on any maps. You can't leave unless they say you can, you are part of Deus Ex Machina. We fight monsters and s**t, creatures created from fear. If you can think it up, it probably exists out there somewhere. You woke up because there's one of those creatures out there that's picked you as their wielder. Long story short we make monsters into weapons to fight other monsters with. One of those weapons will bind to you. "

He gestured to his raw looking ear and its twisted earring. "Mine is Tracey, he's a huge axe when I summon him and he used to be a fallen angel. Yours could be almost anything."

He shrugged. "First order of business for you though is picking them up. To do that you need to go to the cove. So your order of business today would be. Cove. Then go see the quartermaster and get your uniform and pick up what little s**t they let you bring with you. Then pick a room. I warn you, the rooms upstairs are getting scarce but any one of them is better than the ******** torture-dungeon turned basement."

He shook his head. "The living situation here is worse than some ******** Thai prisons."

Dark eyes flicked down to the fake leg, and she gave a thoughtful hum as lips pursed. "I guess I'll find out, right?" Hopefully it wouldn't be quite as taxing as Rep was making it out, but if it was Gretchen was sure she'd adapt. At this point she had a far bit of practice in over coming adversaries. "I can rock climb with it. I mean, that's not ice or anything, but better than some." Grinning, she tapped the toe of her other foot against the shiny chrome.

As he began explaining to her where she was the girl went quiet, listening intently. An island in the Bermuda, a militant organization that fought mon- "Monsters?" Dark eyes lit up. Of all the information he'd just fed her, that was the bit that had caught her attention. "Like, real monsters?" She sounded skeptically hopeful, though she did glance at the earring he had indicated. It didn't look much like a fallen angel. Or an ax, for that matter. Her head tilted to one side as she stared at the twisted earring.

Likely she should have been a little more concerned over the living conditions and where she was going to be staying, but she was still hung up on the whole monster thing. "So does that mean ghosts also?" Her gaze snapped back up to his face. "is that what the shadows are, monsters?"

"Aye you'll find out right quick. Just hope for your own sake that the trouble that's been brewing lately doesn't hit before you find your...ahah .. your feet." He seemed to quite enjoy the pun. "But aye, if you can climb rocks and s**t hopefully you'll be ok, we deal with stupid s**t as often as not, so you might well be fine."

At the question of monsters he arched a brow. "Aye man. Real ones. Dragons, manticores, wizards you ******** name it. Ghosts too yep. Everything is real and part of our job is to deal with it. The worst s**t you'll run into is mean ******** called horsemen, listen out for mention of them and be on your guard."

Rep seemed very content to ramble on, adding. "And what you saw like, the shadows and s**t, yep were almost certainly like, monsters that you weren't able to make out fully yet. But they were real and they could have been dangerous to you and your family. Now though, well now you'll be able to get revenge."

PostPosted: Wed Feb 04, 2015 7:32 pm

Already large eyes got even wider as Rep confirmed that monsters and creepy crawlies of all manner were in fact real. Lips parted, chest rising on a slow intake of breath. "And I can see them now?" The shadows wouldn't be shadows anymore. She could finally stop guessing, start getting real, honest to God answers for a change. It was all terribly exciting.

She probably should have been a little more apprehensive of the idea, but she'd been searching for the truth for so ******** long, and now she was going to get it!

"Okay." A hand came up, gesturing for a pause. Really, she didn't mind him giving her information, it was appreciated, but it was also a lot to take in. "So go back to this partner thing. I'm going to be paired up with a monster," here she paused, brows pinching slightly. "To wield?" That didn't sound right."

Rep halted mid-yammering to let the woman speak before continuing with a nod. "Aye on all counts. You technically are already paired up with them, they were the ones who woke you up, you just need to go complete the bond yourself now. You'll wield em and in turn they'll take care of you." He smirked. "We can survive s**t that would be the end of normal humans. I owe my weapon plenty ******** times over, I'm lucky I've still got an eye, and somehow I ******** got stitched up after having a hole punched in my chest."

He had digressed and pulled himself back in line. "But aye, they'll call to you down in the cove."

PostPosted: Wed Feb 04, 2015 7:50 pm

Well that sounded...different. She blinked up at him, absorbing everything he'd just told her, and after a moment she nodded. "Alright." It didn't make a whole lot of sense now, but she suspect it would as she went along. Which meant she needed to stop asking questions, and just start doing.

"So where is this Cove?"

"I'll walk you there." he said, surprisingly gentlemanly. "But its an experience you do alone, follow your instincts and don't be surprised when you hear them in your head. Because they'll be there forever. When you take a piss, there will be a voice in your head, when you go to bed. Everything. It can be hard to get used to at first but thereafter you are never really lonely again."

He smirked. "You'll either love it or you'll hate it but either way you are stuck with it."

And with that he got up to lead the way to the cove.

PostPosted: Thu Feb 05, 2015 9:11 am

She stepped out of the pod, following on his heels, but her pace stuttered briefly as he mentioned having a voice in her head for the rest of forever.. It left the girl staring at the back of his head, wondering just how literal he was being here. "Alright." Wariness mixed with curiosiry. A healthy combination for the island. Not that she knew that yet.

There were probably more questions she could be asking, but her mind was cycling through everything she'd heard so far. It meant she was quiet as she followed him, features thoughtful.

When they reached the top of the stairs, Rep paused, smirking and patted the girl on the back. "Doon there." he said encouragingly. "Just bear in mind whatever weird s**t happens down there its the least of your problems you'll need to deal with."

He shrugged. "Good luck. Hope you get a good one."
