The text message suggesting a spar had been strange. Rep sounded a little manic, in a way the more public conversation hadn't seemed; Jordan knew better than to ask directly if the other man was okay. He'd just go see what was up in person.

He didn't waste any time, but he didn't rush, either. He'd been outside the compound on a run, killing time more than any serious endeavor, and it took around ten minutes to get back to the training field. Once there, he slowed from a jog to a walk, checking around him for Rep's distinctive figure.

Rep took his time, sauntering down to the training fields and arriving not too long after Jordan, dressed for sparring in denims and a green and white football shirt. He smirked when he saw Jordan, giving him a wave from afar. The redhead was in a strange mental place, somewhere beyond sleep deprivation - he'd had very little sleep in the last week - into a bright and brilliant place where he no longer felt tired. His reaction times were shot and the bags under his eyes were still there, but he'd had an energy drink or two and a few - he'd lost count - cups of coffee. He didn't normally drink coffee.

"Sup?" he crooned. "Glad you came." As he got nearer it became apparent if Jordan was inclined to look, that something was not right with Tracey's totem, the ear itself red and irritated looking, the earring strangely twisted and splintered, digging constantly into the flesh. Rep didn't seem to notice, giving the other man a half lidded goofy grin. "The smiley police like, take these accusations of corruption seriously you know. We demand restitution!"

The way Rep moved, the expression on his face, the tone of his voice, everything about him added to the weird, off, manic impression that his oddly worded text had provided. As he got closer, something plucked at Jordan's attention; it took him a few moments to spot the irritated redness on Rep's ear, but once he'd noticed, he saw that there was something very wrong with Tracey's totem, the earrings twisted into a strange and tortured shape that dug into the skin.

Ferros growled, a low and worried rumble, his attention focusing sharply on that point of wrongness. Jordan offered Rep a slightly wary smile. "Of course I came," he replied. "Man, have you been sleeping? You look kind of tired. I mean, I know, defending your honor and all, have there been that many smiley violations?" On the way here, he'd hoped that he was wrong, that the strange tone of the text had been nothing more than Rep feeling playful, but it didn't look like that was the case.

Rep shook his head. "Nah man, no too much sleeping. Can't." he gestured to his ear. "I ******** up H's office trying to find out if he was a golem. Marie like....ate? Tracey? I need fear to fix him. He's kind of messed up. I'll show you."

And dreamily he summoned the axe, all broken edges and still snarled up in the whip. "I think he said Marie was hungry or something. I figured you could help me out. " he grinned. "And that it'd be short. Short is better, short means more fear. The bigger the fight the more fear involved."

He shrugged his free arm. "Besides, you and Ferr are always eye candy."

Usually, Tracey's summoning was a fluid slither of shadows. Now, though ... Jordan could only think of it as glitched, and the broken edges of the summoned blade made their breath catch in sheer horror. "Jesus," Jordan said, staring, and Ferros screeched a grating-metal howl of shocked fury.

They summoned without even thinking about it, Ferros's materialization faster than usual. Rep had said they needed fear to heal, and the need to help was a sharp, stark ache, a physical clench of worry. "We'll help you out," Jordan agreed, and managed a slight smile. "And we can even try to look good in the process."

"It hurts. Quite a lot. Both of us." he admitted. It was not something he'd told anyone else other than Harrison. Putting a brave face on it made it more possible to pretend it was nothing much.

He smiled again quickly, too out of it to be sad long.

"You don't need to ******** try to look good and you know it."

The wrong kind of hurt, it was obvious, and it made them ache to go over and just hold Rep, but that wouldn't help. That wouldn't help. Jordan nodded, a short, clipped motion, and didn't ask further.

His return smile was strained and worried. "Hair's getting a little out of hand. Think I should trim, or just leave it?" Without any more warning than their quick, fluid motion, they stepped forward and brought Ferros around in a short, hard arc.

"You know me, I always liked the wild look, at least on me. Blue you pulled off the neat look though so. I think you'd look good either way. Neatness becomes you though." He braced himself out of instinct to defend against Ferros, but he might as well not have bothered, his shield was a mere shadow of its normal self and the weight of the hammer took him by ******** hell." he snarled, swinging Tracey around in a counter, less fluid and more cumbersome and slow than he'd been in years. "I'm so ******** FRAIL. But its good. Its good. More."

"Maybe I'll get it trimmed, then." Rep was slower than usual, movements noticeably less fluid, all wrong, and it bothered them. This wasn't a fair fight; more than that, even, it wasn't the kind of give and take that they knew.

"More," Rep demanded, and they set their jaw. "Okay." A quick slide back with the brushing, bare contact of Tracey's blade, and they lunged in, planting one foot and spinning to bring Ferros around in a full circle, muscle and momentum brought to bear with all their strength.

Rep was used to fighting Jordan. They had fought innumerable times throughout their relationship and innumerable times afterwards. He felt like he knew the rhythm of the other man's movements, the moment before a swing, the deceptive calm as he set his balance firmly. Once upon a time he had been able to move with it, to leap over Ferros in a fight. He knew where he needed to be but he just couldn't do it, Tracey was too heavy, heavier than he had ever been and it felt like they were out of sync. If he'd had to describe it he'd have used the metaphor of a lagging server, constantly glitching you back and making everything miss. It was awful.

As the swing came in he knew it was coming, felt it was coming and could do nothing about it. Like a ragdoll he flew back meters and meters, crashing into a dummy and decimating it completely, dragging himself out of the splinters and dust dragging Tracey like a sheet of grating steel behind him. Even with his shield as decimated, he didn't look deterred, he needed fear and this was a whole ******** lot of fear. It made sense if you needed solar power you flew right into the ******** sun.

He leapt, clearing the distance he'd been thrown without touching the ground and bringing Tracey down as hard as he could on both of them.

Both he and Tracey cringed internally at how little it did.

It was a fight that should have been familiar but wasn't, Jordan's half of the dance at full speed and strength while Rep lagged behind, and Jordan could see that Rep was anticipating the way he should be, moves begun in time but not completed. It was unexpectedly agonizing to watch. He started forward as Rep crashed into the dummy, unable to help the concern, but Rep pulled himself out of the wreckage and leaped, bringing Tracey up and over, almost like normal, almost.

They braced themselves for a punishing impact, bringing Ferros up to intercept and protect, automatically expecting that it would do very little good and probably knock them back just as hard, but the strike barely hurt. Jordan moved to catch Tracey's handle with the base of Ferros's hammer head, twisting and shoving hard to throw Rep off, far too easily.

Rep wouldn't let go of Tracey as he was thrown again, with once again more force than he was anticipating. It was all wrong, he knew Jordan's strength, he could match him step for step or had at one point been able to. Now he was nearly ******** helpless in the face of Ferros. Once again he hit the dirt.

Tracey said, frustrated and irritable, and he dismissed the comment, it was not his fault, both of them were struggling.

He pulled himself to his feet, swaying and unsteady, vivid bruises across his arms from the repeated damage he'd been taking from repeated spars beginning to show through. "One more hit and I think I'm out completely." he said. He didn't normally surrender, but even with the wards, he wasn't sure he would come out all right from another swing like that.

"If that wasn't ******** enough fear for Marie I don't know what will ever be."

He stuck Tracey into the ground and leaned on him for balance. "You did look good doing it though." he said, dazed and distant.

That, too, was unusual. Ferros desummoned himself as Rep sank Tracey into the ground and leaned on him for support, and Jordan stepped forward. "Here," he said, offering his arm, "lean on me, you look like you're about to fall over and you'd be better off doing that at home."

He huffed a laugh that was half a sigh. "Thanks. I'll be sure and touch up before the spar next time, distraction tactics, right?"

Rep desummoned Tracey and leaned on Jordan instead, putting an arm across his shoulders and throwing his full weight against him. Anyone else he would have told to get lost and dragged himself all the way back to the room on his own, but he didn't mind asking for help from Jordan.

Still, he was more playful than usual, leaning to inhale against the other man's hair. "You still use that fancy ******** shampoo don't you?" he said with a grin. "I knew where you hid it you sly b*****d."

Jordan looped an arm around Rep's shoulders to hold him up, though his touch was light, ready to let go if Rep showed any signs of getting skittish about it. Even though the situation wasn't great, he couldn't help quietly enjoying the kind of friendly touch he'd been denying himself for months. He snorted at the teasing question, starting slowly toward the dorms. "Yeah, I know you did," he answered, glancing sideways at Rep, his eyes glinting slightly with amusement. "Didn't matter, just had to be more effort to go steal it than the cheaper stuff."
