There were lots of days that Abbi spent in the Infirmary, filling her time with stuffing knowledge into her head with experience and trying to remember all the things she'd read in her medical texts. Most of the time she spent it peeking over shoulders, or under elbows as was more often the case due to her short stature, not flinching at the blood (Or worse) and desperate to soak up knowledge. She was usually handed ruby stained cloths a second later, told to dispose of them, and without question she did as instructed.
But one thing Abbi thought she excelled at, one thing she took actual pride in, was talking to every patient that she could.

It wasn't always possible, of course, given that some patients were not even admitted but just passed through quickly with minor wounds. There were times too that she missed someone who only spent a night, or on rare occasions, there were just too many beds taken for her to make it through them all.
But when she did get to meet someone it was all sunshine and excited chatter, more for the teen's selfish want to be important than really because she ought to help. Helping was a large portion of her motivation, but it would be a lie to say it solely the reason.

And today was no exception as Abbi had been afforded a sizable amount of down time which she sought to fill with wandering.
Everyone occupying cots she had already said hello to and were ignoring her in favor of not having their ear talked off, so that left the rooms. These were reserved for more long term patients, of which the teen wasn't often permitted to. But today no one was stopping her! She was going to make friends!
Sneakily she tip toed to the first room and knocked lightly on the door.
No answer.

The second was much the same, so she expected the same for the third, but gave it a quick rap just in case, waiting for a reply.

Chris stared balefully at the tray beside his bed. A single cheap plastic cup stood atop it, filled with applesauce. A white spoon stuck out of the cup like a proud flag. It clearly hadn't been touched.

Well, that was a lie. Chris had taken one bite, but he'd immediately felt sick at just the overly sweet taste, and shoved it aside. It was not the first time he'd tried to eat since being back, but he had no more success than before. Everything tasted like too much, or was too heavy once it hit his stomach and made him overwhelmingly nauseous. The doctors said it was normal, but it didn't feel like it was.

His head swung to the door and he blinked. Chel had left not even an hour ago, so he doubted she'd be back so soon. "Uh, come in?" he called.

Ah!! An answer!
Surprised and excited Abbi swung the door open and hopped into the room, not expecting anything and therefore startled when there was something. Or, well, more of a someone.
"Hi!" Blue eyes narrowed for a moment, leveling out quickly as the girl swung up a finger to point at the person in the bed.
"I think I know you." Maybe she didn't, maybe she was totally crazy.

In either event she invited herself in, skittering forward to snatch up the chart from the end of his bed for a look-see.
"Whatcha in for?" She asked in her most conversational tone, smiling at the man and chart, her attention divided between both.

Chris stared dumbly for a second. This was the first truly peppy and energetic encounter he'd had since waking up. It felt almost surreal. "Uh. I don't think I know you? You're not one of the nurses from before, I don't think." he answered, catching up.

He watched her flip through his chart and snort. "For bein' a failure of a Moon, mostly." He raised the arm with the cast as if it and the bandages around his face weren't an obvious clue that he was just generally ******** Up. "Might be easier to list what I'm not in for."

Unperturbed by the staring the girl focused more on the chart, which told of basic mission wounds and woes, though this one was actually more interesting. She hadn't really heard of too many people starving to the point of serious detriment, but it wasn't a surprise either. That had to happen eventually, and now Abbi wondered just how many Hunters had suffered a fate worse than his.
"Naw, I'm not officially a nurse or anything." She flipped a few more pages on his chart, turned it to one side to look at the x-ray even if most of it looked like gobbledygook to her.
"Even when I do become a nurse, its gonna be a Battle Nurse."

Mostly satisfied with her inspection, but still sure she knew him somehow, the girl moved closer, tucking the clipboard under one arm.
"You're not a failure if ya came back." She points out gently with a shrug, before she offered a hand that would be able to shake his good one.
"Nice to meetcha, N-E-ways. Abbi Killian, Moon too, Intermediate." Normally her introductory handshakes are full of vim and vigor, but today she goes easy on the guy.
"Wanna start with what you're not in here for then?"
PostPosted: Fri Jan 30, 2015 9:27 pm

"Battle Nurse sounds like a video game character. She'd be really cool," he nodded approvingly.

His face screwed up in a way that clearly said he didn't agree. He only made it back because a team came to save his a**. He shook her hand, though it was pathetically weak. He hadn't quite regained his strength. "Chris Axten. And it's not cancer. Or the flu. And I'm definitely not pregnant, though I think I'm late on my period by about 10 years."

There might have been some sparkling going on, but Abbi was good and recovered herself enough to gush.
"That's totes the point and A+ for you figuring it out, you get an extra pudding cup." With that out of the way she felt it completely justified to bask in his compliment.

Abbi felt it useless to argue with someone injured and so fresh off the field, not noticing the poor handshake either because look the guy was bedridden and his face all jacked up. She wasn't a monster, after all, and found him perfectly in his rights for all those minor discrepancies.
"Probably not measles, the mumps, HIV, or TB, huh?" All too glad to play this game, she pulled the chart back out, crossing her arms over it to rest against her front.
"Aw, don't worry about your period. It'll come when its good and ready." Here she laughed, it was just too funny a quip not to.

"Can I ask what your mission was? Or is it like, super top secret?" In a show of good fun both arms rose up suddenly to cross over themselves in a gesture of drama.

The idea of pudding made him want to puke, but he appreciated the sentiment anyways.

"Gee, thanks doc," he said, batting his eyelashes. "I just want to be like the other girls." He picked at the edge of his cast and shrugged. "Not really top secret. Kind of lame, actually. It was just a search and rescue in the mountains. We were only supposed to need a small team of moons to get them out. There was a cave in and I got separated from the rest."

He scratched at the edge of his face bandages irritably. "I couldn't find any way out. I ******** up."

A little snort left her, half because the idea of a guy batting his eyelashes at her of all people was hilarious, and the rest because, well, it was actually kind of cute. Bandages and jacked up face and all.
"You're just a late bloomer, is all!" Abbi squeaked out before she hid her face behind the clipboard as though that would hide her fit of giggles. Most people upon waking weren't so funny, so this was a nice treat.

A moment later the clipboard lowered, a hand reaching out toward his bandages without making even half the distance. It was a small exclamation of 'don't scratch!' with no words and no demand beyond a worried look.
Abbi pursed her lips and tapped the clipboard lightly against her chin, sighing deeply.
"Screws ups's are... Kinda..." She was hedging, careful to skirt around actually repeating what he said, but sure to reframe it positively. "Like... They... You just..." Both hands, even the one with the clipboard, had come into play as Abbi tried to awkwardly phrase herself. They swooped and dipped and finally she gave up, sighing again and shrugging.
"You still made it out. That's like... Super A+. I know you feel bad now, trust me I've been there, but like... You're gonna grow from this. And this place is all wigged out but... That's really what's important."
The girl tilted her head to one side, pulling the chart close to hide her face in case that was necessary.
"Ya feel?"

Chris's mouth pressed into a hard line. He didn't want to let himself off the hook that easy. It wasn't enough that he'd made it out alive. "I couldn't even make it out on my own, I had to be rescued. If they hadn't found me? Chel would be alone, ********. That's..."

He let out an irritated huff, clearly getting worked up in his anger at himself. "That's unacceptable. I'm not going to let it happen again."

There was a lot to be said for being rescued, mostly because Abbi was well acquainted with the event both for herself and all her friends, but she didn't say anything. Clearly her attempts at optimism weren't helping, and unwilling to make his mood worse, the teen sighed.
But a moment later she perked back up, attention focused on something he'd said.
"You know Chel?" Just saying the name makes it all click, and Abbi laughs despite Chris's frown. There was something about his nose or his smile or his eyebrows but it was familiar in a way that wasn't conscious. But he'd said her name and never realizing it until then, the connection was made.
"Are you the cousin?"

Aimlessly the teen wandered to the bedside table, looking with interest at the cup of untouched apple sauce for a long moment while she thought.
"You have something to work toward now, at least." She looked at him, neutral for a second before she smiled with a shrug.
"Got a bit of an uphill climb given what you went through... But as they say, what doesn't kill you gives you XP. And sweet loot."

He blinked, pulled out of his anger a bit by the unexpected connection. "The cousin? That makes me sound infamous or some s**t. But, uh, yeah?"

He nodded thoughtfully, though he still didn't look quite satisfied. She had a point, he definitely had to work harder. He'd train his a** off if it meant avoiding making the same mistake again. "I'm still waiting on the loot. Nearly died and all I got was this lame cast," he waved the bulk in question. He'd been told that he wouldn't have to wear it for long, but every second was one too many. "I think I at least deserve a glowy sword or something. Maybe elite-level armor? Oh, or a bigger inventory! Always useful."

"Well, I mean its Chel, so yeah. Being infamous kind of comes with the territory." Not meant in a disparaging manner, Abbi replied with all the warm adoration she felt for her friend, connecting things in her mind hurriedly. "But you are pretty famous, in her book. She talks about you a lot." It was a good thing, or at least the teen seemed to think since she looked satisfied with finally meeting Chris proper.

Her gaze shifted to the cast and for a second she pouted, because yeah those were pretty much a mega downer on every account. But a rummage in one of her pockets produced a pastel colored pen decked with a cartoon rabbit at the top.
"Want me to sign it? I'll draw something funny." Maybe not well, but hey she was trying.
"I don't think we get elite-level armor until we're full Hunters, but if you need a bigger inventory there's this really cool store I found in New York City-- They make these like totally awesome bags that you can strap to like your back or your leg or your arm and stuff!"

And because she was bored and he seemed cool, Abbi wandered back to the edge of the bed and set the chart back down with a chipper question.
"So what games you into?" They were going to be Nerd Friends and he was stuck in bed so he couldn't say no. Abbi could nearly have broken down into an evil laugh if she wasn't so excited for finding a new friend.

He... didn't know how to feel about that. Chel talking about him could mean a lot of shitty untrue jokes thrown around Deus that he really didn't want to be the center of. But it also meant she cared, in her lame a*****e way.

He sighed and held out his cast for Abbi to see better. It was covered in crude drawings of dicks and, unfortunately, him sucking dicks. "If you can find a space between all her drawings you can draw whatever you want," he said, rolling his eyes. "And you should definitely show me that store. I'm always looking for better ways to store s**t with me."

"My favorite series is Mass Effect. Played it with Chel way back when. And a lot of older stuff. It was easier for us to afford SNES and s**t when we were growing up."

A laugh burst from her before she could stop it, brought on by his dubious look. Both hands shot into the air to wave in a silly sign of defense, though the girl couldn't quite stop laughing.
"You look worried, but its really good!" Mostly because Abbi knew enough about Chel to take everything she said with more than just a grain of salt. It also helped that the teen was predisposed to assume the best about most people, but doubly so for ones who were clearly into cool things she enjoyed too.

Curious to inspect her canvas Abbi leaned forward, blinking wide blue eyes at the drawings, eyebrows drawing down in confusion a moment later. What was... What were these weird markings? They were like a kids drawing of... She snorted, slapping a hand over her mouth to stop the sound and dissolving into laughter.
"I am so, so sorry." The apology wheezed out in a half-hearted tone, mostly because his fate was too hilarious to properly pity. "Oh man, do you like... Want a new cast? I know one of the guys who does most of the plastering. I can probably get him to make you a new one." As she spoke she'd invited herself to sit down next to him, having scouted out a small place to doodle something and setting to work.

At least, after she had some major sparkle eyes going on.
"I love Mass Effect." Yes they were now friends forever and ever, amen. "Who did you romance? Lemme guess, you're a Liara guy. All the dudes love a hot alien chick, I don't blame you. She's pretty cute." Her words came out excited and rushed despite her steady hand that was poorly beginning a doodle. "What ending did you pick? Were you Paragon or Renegade? Or Paragade? Man, that vending machine for Paragade was my favorite I think I laughed for twelve minutes straight. What other stuff did you play? I'm kind of not so up on my older games, sorry." She did look apologetic for her lack of knowledge in the matter. "I didn't really get to play games much until the first Playstation came out. Then it was goodbye actual life, hello nerdom. Video games were easier to play than friends were to make."
