”Don't let 'em dope the beasts.”

Those were Dovev's only orders, and his questions for clarification had hit a dead end. Still, money was money, and he was inexperienced, so this was the job he could get.

Dovev stood at the wall of the Xaraan stable, his old nocked sword restful at his side. He was to guard this place, and he was being paid, but he still wasn't clear on what he was guarding it from. Not attacks, surely. Drugs implied putting things in the Xaraan feed, but surely they would not be poisoned? It was all very strange, but Dovev supposed he was just going to look for suspicious behavior and deal with it appropriately. That, in theory, should work.

He wished he had asked more questions, though: he didn't know what to look for. But he was in it, and there was pay on the line. He was on his own, and he would just have to manage...

Sanele, super excited for this race even if it was only a small time for show only race, had shown up extra early. Looking around, anstya nd wanting something to do, she figured she ought to check up on her mount; one of the new Xaraan lan had gotten and wanted to test. They'd done well in the small time testing races the farm did to see if a Xaraan had promise, but one could never know how a Xaraan would react on a bigger stage. Some got scared, others did better than expected, the crowd seeming to urge them to greater heights.

Entering the stalls where the Xaraan were nervously held, Sanele was a bit startled to see the guard. One could expect guards; to keep owners from cheating or sabotaging, but the race of this guard in particular was of interest. A Matori! She'd never actually seen one up close. Living in the poorer sections there were no slaves.. in fact slaves were despised there since instead of hiring the poor a person would buy a slave and work them to the bone and save money that way...

She walked up to him and looked him up and down; looked to be a fighter type... had he been like a body guard or gladiator before?
"I thought your people had been freed? What'cha doing here?" Her tone was a bit abrupt, but still curious.

Dovev watched the Oban impassively but with predatory intensity as she walked into the Xaraan enclosures, but as she seemed to be paying more attention to him, he decided that this was not the suspicious behavior he was looking for.

Still, she kept looking, and Dovev became slightly uneasy. It was one thing to glance at a guard and be surprised at a former slave in a place that should by rights be off limits to him. It was another thing to stare at a guard. That was suspicious.

Still, he gave her a level, neutral stare. ”This one was hired to guard these Xaraan from...” he hesitated, ”... doping.” he returned her stare in kind, his slit-pupiled eyes studying her for any oddities. ”What is your purpose here?” he asked, wary.

They actually hired a matori? Over Obans? Surely they could have found plenty of willing and strong backed Obans to guard our Xaraan! She thought with slight venom. She knew of many neighbors who would have been glad for the extra income and could do a better job than this guy!

She shook her head at the 'guard.'
"I'm a racer duuh. They don't just let anybody in...." Or used to do that anyways. "Gonna check up on my mount; Lilin and make sure she's ready to race."

Dovev did not react. There was not even a flick of his fin at the implication that he was 'anybody' or that he was stupid. Not even a bat of his eye. Apparently, she was very odd, so no hints there.

He approached. ”Do you have proof that what you say is true?” he asked, wary. For all he knew, she could be 'doping' the Xaraan. He didn't think he would be taking a job like this again until he knew more about the racing culture, though it had honestly been a rush job – a 'you, boy, I'll give you coin if you...' sort of proposition. Dovev wasn't going to turn down any oppurtunity.

”Which one is yours?” he asked, his eyes quickly flicking over the Xaraan before returning to her.

"Simba's mine." She said, pointing at the large orange Xaraan with red stripes. Simba, at the sound of her voice, had already moved to the door of his stall, and was looking at them converse, head slightly cocked as he waited for the treats that had to be coming. Sanele was easy to convince to give him treats....

"As for proof, didn't they give you a list of riders and their aides?" How else was he supposed to know who was who and who owned what?
