IC
The chains to radaku had barely had time to disappear into the brush of the forest before the Obans were after him. It would seem it was up to Lerin to save the radaku before it was too late and he really would meet an untimely and painful end.
He could still hear the Obans whooping and yelling for the radaku, the forest alive with the sounds of a chase, but the radaku was injured and it wouldn't be long before it tired and the gap between him and his pursuers closed.
Quest Tasks
||. This quest is meant to test Lerin's resolve and save the radaku. ||. Lerin must find some way to overcome the Obans, whether that be going for backup from the village or facing them down himself. ||. The radaku, after being chained and beaten, will tire itself out shortly and the Obans will be able to close the gap and catch up. ||. The quest's grading will not be effected by Lerin's choice (whether to fight them, outwit them, or go for backup). ||. The quest should end with the radaku saved and the Obans either knocked out, or somehow fleeing from the scene. ||. The radaku will not have been tamed by Lerin by the end of the quest, merely saved from the Obans.

P A R T x O N E x S O L O The Chase They were so loud.
Lerin moved through the trees at a quick pace, Tandoori bobbing along from his shoulder with each step. The trail left by the Obans was glaringly obvious, not only from the hoops and hollers they made ahead, but from the deep boot-prints they made in the mud, from the sprouting tree limbs they left in shambles, and from the dark tree trunks that were unceremoniously slashed in passing. The trees hadn't even done anything and they were being attacked. That radaku wouldn't stand a snowball's chance in Oba.
Fortunately, the cluster of Fire Earthlings were not native to Juahar. They may have lived in the rainforest for however many long moons, but they would never fully adapt to maneuvering with agility and grace through the trees. The crashing they made ahead was a testament to that.
Meanwhile, Lerin traveled quickly and quietly. He moved as easily across the low-hanging branches as he did over the ground, leaving little imprint on his way, but still making much fairer time than the Obans. But while he drew closer to them, they drew ever nearer to their prey. From his vantage point among the branches, Lerin could make out dark splodges of orange and red through the forest's ill-lit landscape that was the Fire Earthlings' garments. Their pace had slowed, if only because their prey was losing momentum.
Edging a little nearer along the branches, Lerin peered around wearily. Doori clung to his shoulder, her feathers brushing his cheek as she tipped her head this way and that to aid in the search. The Shifter dipped closer, moving slowly and hesitantly into near enough range to hear one of the men coo out, "Here, pretty, pretty..." The Oban possessed a true talent for making those three simple words sound revolting. With a few hushed murmurs, the group of three split apart, scouring the nearby area and kicking bushes to see if the radaku would emerge.
Lerin's gaze scraped over them, roaming quickly and efficiently across the landscape in search for- He spotted them, a radaku's crystal horns, blending into the thick, luminescent lichen hanging draped across a felled log and overhanging branch. If he stared closer, he could see the creature tucked into a crouch, it's body low and teeth bared. It held itself still and unmoving, save for the harsh rise and fall of its chest.
Blissfully, the sad, spunky thing was near to him, though not out of danger from its aggressors. The man with the whip loomed nearer, violently kicking through leaves and disturbing the generally peaceful atmosphere of the forest.
Swallowing down a fearful lump in his throat, Lerin slunk across the branch, his bare feet making no sound against the smooth bark and the leaves scarcely giving a rustle as he passed. He carefully dipped lower, making his way down to the branch that supported the thick greenery of the radaku's cover. When he dropped onto it, the branch swayed, a few stray leaves raining down around the exhausted creature. Out of fear of being noticed, Lerin's own orbs snatched up, searching out the nearest Oban and lingering there until he was sure it was safe.
When he looked back down at his charge, the radaku glared at him. It hadn't moved an inch, but its eyes zeroed in, maw peeling back even farther in warning.x x Results: Caught up to the radaku. Words This Step: 562

P A R T x T W O x S O L O The Bait Lerin's heartbeat quickened in his chest. He could practically feel the vibrations in the air as the radaku rumbled out a warning growl. Silver eyes flicked back toward the Oban, drawing ever near. It would undoubtedly only take another minute before the man noticed the color distinction between the animal and its surroundings.
While the creature growled at him, Lerin dipped his head. He was still perched above the thing (an unfavorable position in the radaku's mind), but surely with ample non-threatening and subservient gestures, it would understand that he was truly trying to aid it. Since it had fled, rather than ripped its fangs into his throat at their last encounter, it hardly seemed like an innately mean beast. But Earthlings had done it no favors, and there was no reason not to be on its guard now.
Slowly, deliberately, and with his head still tucked, Lerin reached for the pouch at his waist. When the metal clasp clicked open against his palm, he flinched, half expecting the radaku to start barking or the Oban to start screeching and charging toward him. When nothing of interest happened, he continued on, dipping his hand into the pouch and producing thin strips of dried meat. Door's feathers puffed, and she gave him an admonishing nudge to his cheek for even daring to feed this barbaric creature her treats.
Plastering himself as low on the branch as possible, Lerin dropped a strip right before the radaku's nose, moving as little as he could possibly manage. The aqua-toned creature rumbled, leaning forward a fraction of an inch to sniff the meat. After a wary murmur, it pressed its teeth to the ground, scooping up the snack and gobbling it down. As it moved, the chains still secured about it neck gave a jangle, and Lerin rose to peer between the leaves once more.
"There, over there!" The man with the whip beckoned wildly to his comrades even as he sauntered his way through the shrubs at a quick trot.
Lerin produced another strip from his pouch with a sharp whistle, giving it a waggle towards the ground to draw the creature's attention. "Come. Come," he commanded more insistingly as the radaku only glowered at him. With a nervous whimper at the approaching sounds, Lerin swung down, clinging to the branch with his legs and stuffing the strip toward the radaku. When it went to snap the snack from his hands, the Shifter pulled it away. It rose, though grudgingly.
"Hurry up," Lerin griped, desperately waving the strip as he pulled himself back onto the low-branch. The radaku huffed, tail lashing as it continued to glare. The sounds were on them now, the Obans slashing through the last concealing threads of green and revealing the young lad swaying dried food in front of a desperate radaku.
"Hey, you!"
The radaku jumped at Lerin's repeated coaxing, long claws digging into thick bark as it scrabbled to pull itself up to the branch. The Shifter's own fingers tangled in the fur at the back of it neck and pulled hard, while the other hand focused on not being chomped as the radalu vigorously snapped the treat from his palm. It's back paws struggled, eventually finding unsteady purchase when coupled with Lerin's own adventures.
"It's that kid," the Oban barked as his compatriots neared. "Shoot him down! If he won't buggar off, it's the own boy's fault for being in the way!"
Lerin's own gaze snapped up in time to see a second man notching an arrow in his bow. With a quick flick of his fingers, the thing was sent whizzing in his direction, severing a few dark strands of hair and barely missing his scalp. Lerin grabbed the chain dangling from the radaku's neck without a second thought. Before the man could c**k another arrow, he was running, coaxing the radaku to join him along the thicker tree branches, despite its wavering steadiness, with continued and repeated meat bites.x x Results: Baits the radaku into following him. P A R T x T H R E E x S O L O The Escape Lerin focused on moving. Really all he wanted was a few trees between he and the Obans; a cover of greenery to protect himself from any more arrows they might send at him. He was constantly turning, ducking around limbs and leaves while struggling to keep the radaku engaged enough to keep moving. He hadn't had much time to give it a proper once over, but it seemed t favor one side pretty strongly and the chain about its neck looked as if it had cut through more than just fur at one point...
These men truly were the nastiest of their species, and they weren't gaining very many points in the young Shifter's eyes. Beating and torturing a weakened animal was bad enough, but to feel so obligated to continue on after it, even once it had escaped... To be prepared to attack and maybe even kill a teenager out of... what? Pride? Lerin had overstepped his boundaries and interfered, so he needed to be punish as much as the beast for daring to leave before they were finished with it?
Disgusting.
Despite the scuffles and guffawing and arrows he could hear (though not see) slicing the air, Lerin still felt he had the advantage. He neither had weapons nor a great deal of endurance and did have a quickly tiring radaku to manage and try to force to stay in the treetops. However, he knew and could maneuver the terrain better than any Oban. His eyes were accustomed to this darkness and the humidity the forest presented. He could climb, run, and jump with the practiced ease of his upbringing.
The Obans were bumbling, fumbling idiots as they crashed through shrubs and stomped about in the mud, expending more effort than necessary to pluck their boots free of the soil's sticky hold. And as repeated groans of annoyance assaulted his ears, Lerin decided on a plan. "Come now," he whispered encouragingly to the radaku, tossing another meat bite an inch from its nose to urge it forward.
Its struggles had dimmed, at least where constantly fighting Lerin was concerned, so long as adequate food was supplied, and it followed with less trepidation. Admittedly, it still wasn't eager to be in the trees, and it wavered with the uncertainty of something used to being on solid ground. But on some innate level, it must've understood the risks of going back down, even if it paid the Obans very little mind now.
Still, he needed to be rid of them permanently. The chase was hardly interesting to begin with, let alone when it occurred at length. Heaving a calming breath, Lerin turned, peeking over his shoulder at the men. "Oi, you'll lose us if you don't hurry along," he called down to the group. His fingers itched to reassuringly pet the flower in his hair, but he tamped the weakness down for the sake of the animal.
"You brat! You think because you can climb a tree that yer better than us! Yer a coward for not facing us head-on! And you will understand in due time that cowardice isn't a trait worth rewarding.."
The team blundered on, following Lerin's slowed pace as he very purposefully led them through the trees. The soil was thick all around, the air was warm, but soon enough he entered an area with a particular stink to it, one that Lerin knew to steer clear of. But that likely wasn't the case for the Obans. He hesitated for only a moment, knowing full well that one of the men below could be hurt, knowing that they deserved it if they did, and knowing that he'd feel horrible about it all the same. But if they didn't chase him, they wouldn't be in this mess. Really, it was completely the fault of the Obans.
He continued.
Nothing changed in the trees. The leaves branches swayed under their weight, the flighty insects still dabbled across their vision. The same calls as always fluttered through the air. The ground was another story. Thick mud turned to unsuspecting bog almost instantly. From the corner of his eye, Lerin watched as one of the men sank in straight up to his knees and immediately let out an impressive array of curses. "Ugh! This blasted- Don't be an imbecile stay back- Hmph! I told you-!"
The Shifter exhaled slowly through his nose. They really should leave... Were they so stupid? To still be chasing him even in their worsened conditions? Surely in a moment they'd turn-
Someone screamed, and Lerin choked down a whimper of fear, but refused to completely stall his trek through the low-hanging branches of the trees. There was a group of them. They were warriors in their own right and should be prepared for such things. Surely... even if it sounded a little gruesome as he left the Obans behind, they'd be able to protect each other and see that everyone made it out of the Wadani nest alive...
He couldn't turn back to be certain, though, and likely wouldn't have anyway, out of fear that something more horrid than he'd hoped for had become of them. Within a few extra leaps and bounds, it became apparent that he wasn't being followed, anymore.
With nothing left to offer the radaku, he slipped his way back to the forest floor. The creature followed at a more lumbering pace, but managed to land at his side all the same. It was panting, wounded, and likely still starving despite the snack. And when Lerin reached to touch it with nothing to offer, it promptly resumed snarling.
The Shifter grimaced, rolling his eyes in agitation. "I'm trying to help you," he insisted adamantly, ignoring the bared teeth as he reached around its head to wrest at the chain collar still dragging about behind it. The radaku shrugged away from his touch, giving a warning snap to his arm before it popped free of its bonds. With little more than a soft yip of annoyance or agitation or maybe gratitude (Lerin had no way of knowing), it fled off into the trees, not to be seen again.
Until later, anyway.x x Results: The Obans are detoured by a wadani nest, and the radaku escapes safely... Words This Step: 1047 Total Words: 2273
