Name: V'nar
Age: 26
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Bisexual
Rank: Malvren Wingrider, Former Senior Apprentice Ancientcrafter
History:
V'nar, then Vennard, and his cousin were reasonably close in their holdborn life at (???), but not overly so. They were family, that was all.
Young Vennard was selected and sponsored by an Ancientcrafter for his intelligence, sense of wonder, and clear desire to make his mark on the world, and left home to pursue that apprenticeship.
They stayed in touch, and when his cousin was Searched Vennard was reasonably pleased – it good for anybody to be Searched. Being family and on genial terms with his cousin, Vennard was invited – and wanted to – visit his cousin at the weyr. Unfortunately, for his cousin's first few clutches at (???) Weyr, Vennard was too busy with his work and eccentric mentor to visit. But, his cousin did not Impress in those, and finally he had another chance to visit his cousin and watch a hatching.
Vennard was excited about watching. He had spent years of his young life learning about the wonders that the ancients had been capable of, and one such wonder had been the dragons themselves. To see the birth of these living inventions would, in his mind, be a true delight and a grand exhibition of the ancient's wisdom and greatness.
His cousin impressed in that clutch, to an energetic and vocal blue. Though Vennard had been proud of his cousin and had enjoyed the experience of the hatching immensely, it was the latter part that had him leaning forward in his perch on the Stands, watching intently as the candidates gathered around the remaining eggs. Vennard had not seen an Atypical before, and the concept of these 'unintended inventions' fascinated him. That they had abilities and proclivities not found in the main core of dragons meant, to him, that they were worthy of the Ancient's creation, but then, why had they not been officially created? They represented a paradox, a perfect imperfection that intrigued him. He watched as first a white was hatched, then a silver, and then... a Black. For some reason, he could not take his eyes off of the black...
When Lilugeth hatched, he knew – immediately – that his human was not among the humans around him. He keened unhappily and struggled towards the humans that were sitting so far away. But he stumbled and fell – he was too week. So he keened for his clutchmate to help him to the stands, and the energetic blue – fond of the black since their time in the egg – left his rider and food briefly to nudge the poor dear along.
The black knew His was in the stands. He knew it. He babbled it desperately to his clutchmate as they neared the stands, scanning the faces until he found what he sought, his eyes shimmering with rainbows.
The blue stayed long enough to make sure Vennard got his arse down to Lilugeth, and led them back to the meat in amusement. Thus was how Vennard became V'nar.
It was not a change he entirely liked. Though he adored his dragon – both for being Lilugeth and for the lost technology he represented – Lilugeth was a lot of hassle. Atypicals, though rare and difficult to care for, do not – as other such creatures do – go to those who choose that kind of life. They go to teenagers, who are themselves unready and unprepared. V'nar hadn't even been mentally prepared for any dragon, let alone a dragon with the needs that Lilugeth had. Even with support, it was difficult... but they made it through by sheer force of will and with diligence.
Finally, as Lilugeth grew beyond the difficult stages, life took on a less hectic quality and the pair were able to find some measure of comfort in their life... but they both resented their status. They had fought, through tough illnesses and odds, to be no more than a lowly blackrider pair, no better than a mere blue. V'nar, with no other option he knew of, turned back to Ancientcraft to soothe his frustrations. Of course, he could never be a true 'journeyman' now, but assisting in their miraculous work was good enough and he enjoyed rebuilding the connections he had made while learning in (???).
It is unclear whether he knew about the revolution scheme. It is possible that he thought he was helping with a shield device, and not a diversion. It is possible that he was in on it. The details are blurry but the end result remained: he and his dragon happily joined up with the Wherholds. Freed from the restrictions of being 'just' a black dragon and rider, they began to pursue greater heights, with his cousin at his side.
Description:
V'nar is a small man, his contours stiff, wiry, and seeming, frequently, to vibrate with an internal energy. His face, primarily triangular, ends in a strong chin but increases in width quickly. His soft hair – too thin to reach more than about an inch or so before breaking – is a coppery brown, but he has the poor luck of it already beginning to recede. Typically, V'nar keeps what is left of it well-combed and slightly oiled. He typically bears an expression of intense focus, and – though not being particularly powerful - his nimble hands, occasionally stained with grease or paint, tell instead of clever use.
Personality:
V'nar is, at his core, a weird son of a wher. He has a number of odd habits, and can behave unpredictably. Sometimes this is on purpose, as V'nar hates the status quo with a passion, and actively resists any attempts to put him in a cubbyhole. He intends to make his own place in life, and all others can deal with it.
Formerly a Senior apprentice learning the complicated and almost worshipful art of Ancientcraft, being a dragonrider has only delayed his interests. He has a bit of the mad inventor in him of old, and he tinkers and fiddles with whatever small materials he can. He has made little of particular use himself, but he is smart and knows how things work and has been known to be helpful in assisting in his former field and other fields on occasion.
Of course, he refuses to admit that he is a mere 'assistant'. He has a high – definitely inflated – opinion of himself, what he is done, and what he has yet to do. He thinks he is brilliant, the next Pernese genius, and it is only a matter of time before the world realizes it. He is definitely not humble, and will confidently tell this supposition of his to people he meets. The truth is, it is unlikely, as he is just average in ability and the general consensus is that he is annoying and up his own arse. Still, he has aspirations of greatness and the focus to pull it off.
Fortunately for him, being a wherholder, he does decently enough because his sense of superiority has nothing to do with his dragon. His dragon is his dragon, and he loves his dragon, but he is very focused on himself. His dragon, in his mind, is great, but not what makes him great.
When he is around his dragon, he reveals that he is an emotionally-attuned man, highly sensitive to those around him, perhaps overly so. He is high strung and prone to some anxiety, which manifests itself in a 'whiny' nature he may or may not have picked up from his dragon.
In all, V'nar is not a man for everyone, but his unique skills and sometimes unconventional thinking make him useful, if he can be endured.
Other:
On Dragons:
Dragons fight thread, and he happens to be a dragon rider, fighting thread. He loves his Lilugeth, though he can't help but think – very slightly - that he was cheated, somehow, out of his proper position in life. V'nar intends to make the best of it, though, and is not afraid to aspire to be something greater.
On Whers:
The lore behind them intrigues him: they were an attempt to recreate something that had already been done, and in the end they became something wholly different. He sees whers as an allegory for Ancientcraft and the inventor side of smithcraft... or, rather, as their mascot. V'nar thinks they are pretty neat creatures.
On the Resistance:
Before the revolution, V'nar was just a blackrider with a tinkering hobby, humiliated and undervalued. Now, he will show them. He will show them all.
On the Revolution:
V'nar supports the revolution wholly, and may or may not have colluded with his former mentors and helped in the plot. While not a huge fan of Keller himself, V'nar thinks that the Masterhandler has done more good than harm. He is proud of where he stands in the wherholds, and one day, intends to have a louder voice.
On his Dragon:
Lilugeth is his friend and family. They were a good match from the moment their eyes met, and they have been close since – even through Lilu's troubles as an Atypical. But it is a respectful closeness, not intensely affectionate like some pairs, but not professionally distant either.
On Threadfall:
Threadfall is a problem and V'nar, an inventor, likes to solve problems. So what if the thread shield thing was a ploy? There are other things out there that could be made to fight it. While he thinks up the next big thing, of course, he will be in the air fighting it with Lilugeth because that is the path to the power he craves.
Dragon
Name: Lilugeth
Age: 10
Colour: Black
Description:
Inspired by a Rook
Lilugeth is a dark, velvety black with some brownish highlights. His patterns are that of etched, stylized feathers: large ones on his wings and smaller ones on his body. His face is a stark, bald, light-range color (very close to white) along his upper jaw and extending up to about the base of the headknobs, with a dark black spot just behind the headknobs and the end of the lower jaw.
Size: Average
Build: Average
Personality:
Lilugeth is a dragon that things generally do not come easy for. The first such thing was his own shell, refusing to break when he tapped weakly at it. Next was his body, which refused to carry him to His in the stands and then proceeded to not grow properly and get sick at the worst moments. It took Lilugeth longer to fly, flame, and do all the things a proper dragon should. And then, of course, being a mere black, he was trapped in a low-rank role. Lilugeth, despite his terrible dragon memory, has never entirely forgotten his difficulties and humilition.
Now an adult wherhold dragon, Lilugeth wants to break free of this and be a force to be reckoned with. He and his rider are ambitious, out for much more than his birth and color (And V'nar's attitude) would entitle them to. He is a smart dragon, clever, keen-eyed and dedicated to the wherholder cause. He knows that, if he works himself and his rider hard, he can achieve what they've always dreamed of: power.
Of course, with great ambition and drive comes great anxiety. Leftovers from the stress of his weyrlinghood, Lilugeth worries about details and potential hitches in plans, turning things over and over in his mind until he wears himself out worrying.
Another holdover from his past is his need to hold onto what he has. He didn't have much besides his rider: his food sometimes came back up and his hide didn't always shine and, despite V'nars' best efforts, his health wasn't always a certainty. Though much of that is past, he still clings to what are certainties: his rider, their possessions, and – especially – his brother, a blue that has always been there to help out. He is highly possessive of these things and sharing – or, in the case of his flirtacious brother, being forced to share – makes him incredibly ornery and upset. It boils down to this: Lilugeth loves what's his, and they are his, and nobody else's.
He is aware, on some level, that he is in the wrong, that he cannot possess anything completely, not even his rider. This knowledge, though, only serves to fuel his frustrations, which he is vocal in expressing.
In short, like his rider, Lilugeth is whiny and ambitious, but smart. Put another way, the pair is an 'aquired taste'.
Other:
On Dragons:
Lilugeth is a dragon, but it doesn't mean he likes them. At the same size as a Blue, Lilugeth was valued as much as a Blue, and yet he went through more hardships just growing up than his healthy and hale and much-loved-and-clung-to clutchmate. He feels his hardships (and rarity) should make him more valuable than a Blue, and he resents the color caste system and his inherent weaknesses. Even in the wherhold, he continues to resent it.
On Whers:
Where V'nar is fascinated by whers as a concept and ideal, Lilugeth is fascinated by whers because of their reality. They are strong and – to Lilu – beautiful in their own way. When the dragon – frustrated with his life - occasionally fantasizes about not being a dragon (which he sometimes does) he imagines himself as a human wherhandler, with one of the beasts by his side. Of course, since it is hard for him to imagine a life without V'nar bonded to him, his imagining often falls apart to his disgruntled frustration. Still, he admires and envies wherhandlers and their whers, and may follow them on his break, just to watch them move around.
On the Resistance:
Lilugeth prefers to forget them. Unfortunately, he is cursed with a good emotional memory, and he knows he hated it there. Between health problems and 'not knowing his place' he remembers it as a generally miserable experience and leaves the details up to V'nar.
On the Revolution:
Lilugeth is all for the revolution. He loves the freedom it gives him to forge his own way and, of curse, the whers that come with it. Not so much for the Masterhandler, though... Lilugeth, for obvious reasons, did not agree with the assertion that atypicals are weaker and do not deserve to be born, and personally prefers the council to Keller.
On his Rider:
V'nar and Lilugeth are friends. There would be no Lilugeth without V'nar, but they are, in the end, separate entities.
