It was dark, and cold, and wet... the fade of day into night matching Ash's mood as her outer state reflected her inner upset.

There was only so much she could do, when it came down to it. All her clever computers couldn't find one girl who had disappeared and left nothing behind but a bloody bit of seashell. Even tracking her by her power signature would do nothing if her aura was being muffled by some other dark chaos cat. The idea of someone else touching one of her senshi lifted her hackles and puffed her tail.

Ash was not a violent lady, but nature, but if she ever found the beast that had hidden one of her girls from her... WELL. She might just be scratching someone's eyes out, and happily.

Squirming through the brush that hid the safehouse window, Ash ignored the spots of wet on her fur and the mud on her paws, wanting only a safe place to brood and the possibility of one of her own to soothe her. HQ mocked her with its useless computers and empty room. The window was easy enough to navigate for a clever girl like herself and she slid inside like a bit of liquid silver, hitting the floor with a soft thump of paws. Even colored purple from her visor, her eyes made out the dimness well enough. Cats' eyes were wonderful things.

"Quenton?" She called, sensing not even a wisp of power here. There were bits of things all over the floor, forgotten from the last time she had been here, and they disappeared as she passed, swept up into her magical pocket. How thoughtless, leaving them about like that.

At least the lion's share of the start of his graduate work was reading and critical analysis in order to get up to speed and prove competency in an number of related fields and specialties of study that his eventual thesis was expected to expand the field of knowledge in. Quenton had managed to remember and use an umbrella earlier in the day for transporting books checked out from the DCU library and had opted for the relative privacy of the safehouse compared to the warmer location of his Assistant Desk in Dr. Schach's office. The lack of readily available and constant supply of coffee meant he'd fallen asleep in a curl in the corner, blanket folded as a backrest between himself and the wall and tome still open on his lap.

A small stack of books and published journals was hard by, obviously also requisite reading to be plowed through when somnolence loosed its icy hold. He didn't stir at the soft, feline entry. Nor did he stir at his name being called, by the only helpful benefit of the ongoing medicinal therapies of the last two months.

There was no stirring to her call and Ash's ears perked forward, her tail lifting behind her like a little banner.

"Quenton?"

The pile of man and books in the corner was unmoving and for a moment, there was a squeeze of concern. He was usually on point, but... if she thought about it, the last time she had seen him here he had been dragging, content to curl up in the corner and sleep despite the danger of being consumed by electronics. Soft paws silent on the hard floor, Ash ghosted closer. He looked okay... nothing outwardly terribly wrong with him if you didn't count something of a thin and sunken appearance. Her front paws braced on his leg as she stretched up towards his face, her ears hard forward and whiskers puffed. She could just feel the wind of his breath disturb the delicate instruments and even as she watched, his chest rose and fell.

Sleeping, poor boy. What had he been up to lately to be so out of it? Something was going on that no one was telling her about and it put her back up. Information was her purview, people were not supposed to keep things from her... but it was hard to really get up a good Mad when the thigh under her paws felt chilled. He wouldn't even make a terribly comfortable pillow in this state... only make for cold feet. Had he fallen asleep without turning on the heater? Usually unpleasant stimulation, like being cold, tended to keep people awake, didn't it?

Leaving the blonde to his nap, Ash went to root around among the stocked supplies to find another blanket. She had never much liked the feel of cloth between her teeth, but once she found one, the cat obstinately tugged it out of the pile and dragged it closer. It was only once faced with the daunting task of how to get it onto the poor boy without waking him that the guardian was forced to consider options.

Climbing all over him would only wake him up and it was a good deal of effort. Making a robot to do it for her would not require a power signature leaking her location to all that passed, but would take far too long to build for such a simple task... It would only be for a minute... even as large a give-away as it was, if she was quick about it, surely no one would notice...

The smooth length of her tail flicked from side to side for a moment before Ash burst into sparks of light and girl replaced at. Slender hands tossed back the blue lengths of her trailing hair and she shook out the blanket with easy motions, draping it carefully over the still and peaceful form.

Its not good for you to be so cold, comfortable pillow or not. They can never say I don't take care of my own... even with the evidence to the contrary. What a depressing thought and a circling right back to her earlier gloom. After setting aside the visor she was so proud of, sparks briefly lit the room again as Ash dropped back into her cat form and began to root under the blanket, squirming her way towards the destination of human lap... completely forgetting she had been trying not to jostle and wake him up.

There were the faintest tickles at his mouth and nose. Small points of pressure on his body spoke of small feet. It filtered into dreamless black, waking embers there to illuminate the dark and wonder at the source. Then there was a light, more general heaviness. Someone has put a blanket over me?

It was a strange sensation, foreign since summers spent at a grandmother's house before his age had reached double digits. Never since. It never involved a burrowing sensation. A soft sigh escaped as his eyes cracked open to look down, the book hidden away and a lurking lump making for it's space and his legs. He lifted his arm, tenting up the blanket to allow the little body the ability to see more then blanket and move without hindrance. Too small for Faust. Too tender, he'd have batted my face to wake up rather than blanket me.

There were only so many cats he'd ever seen in the place, even though there'd been a year of opportunity for the location's significance and use to get around senshi and Mauvian's both. "Ash? "

As much as it was asked, he lifted his second arm in the blanket as well, looking down and under himself to confirm the silvery whiskers and bright eyes himself. Cats under blankets had an inherent cuteness. "What is the word on the street? Or 'net, really."

Blankets were an annoyance, but it was her luck that the body she was clambering on decided to move to oblige her and there was sudden space under the draping cover. A purr rumbled out as Ash took advantage and clambered upwards, shoving her way between man and book and then kicking it with a back paw until there was sufficient space cleared for her to hunker down in. Ugh, he really was cold on the paws, but the blanket should remedy that quickly with her body to add heat to the space.

The burmilla froze as her name was spoken and suddenly there was light as the blanket lifted and a curious, tired gaze found her. She stared back with black eyes ringed in emerald, delicate ears back against her skull to protect them from the weight of blanket. Her sides heaved with her breathing as she remained unmoving for a few moments, her only motion the sudden flickering of her tail as it hung over his thigh. It was all the warning he got and suddenly the grey cat burst into action, darting forward to baff his chin with a velvet soft paw.

"Quenton!" She laughed as she stood on his thighs and purred, one forepaw braced to his chest. Her expression looked wild, but there was a playful feline smile in it. "I thought you were asleep, but you were so cold I was going to try to get your core temperature up a bit. You probably shouldn't sleep in this sort of a position, you're going to get stiff or give yourself a crick or something."

Quenton squeezed his eyes appreciatively of the little paws excitement. Hand lifted under her haunches to hold her steady in picking her up and making a short trip to see if the heater was on and remedy if it wasn't. "Thank you for the blanket. It is cold. Too cold."

It was a short excursion, and he sat again and let her have freedom again to move or lay as pleased her. He arranged the blanket on lap nestlike but covering in order to best insulate hopefully both of them while letting his hands be free. Because the left hand moved to ruffle into the silvery bib. She's cleaned up her pieces in the time. How long was I asleep? Hard to say if this all is an improvement compared to the not sleeping before.

"What brought you to the safehouse? "

With awakeness came motion and rearrangement, but Ash weathered it, allowing herself to be held through the trip to the heater and back. Released, she paced a circle around his lap before flopping down comfortably on her side with legs outstretched. Green eyes slitted closed as he worked his fingers into her chest and she rumbled an appreciative purr, the drape of her tail over his thigh curling up and down lazily.

"HQ is boring and lonely." She announced without preamble. "Since I've upgraded my visor, it seems pointless to hang around there. I only really liked it for its computers, I can find shelter in a lot of other places."

Ash rolled then, twisting her upper half around to present upwards while her lower half remained sideways. It stretched her spine in a pleasing way as she extended her paws outwards.

"The computers can't find Amphitrite and I was tired of staring at them like they were magically going to. You are far more pleasant company than they are."

" Amphitrite.....?" He said it vaguely, like a page number to summon from a tome in a mental book. It was a longish name, having an unfortunate final suffix suggestive of the mineralogical zealots of the enemy.

'ite', being a follower or adherent, a descendant of a specific individual, a rock, mineral or fossil. That's not far enough. Queen of the sea, the wife of King Poseidon...greek nereid or goddess. When have I met people... The occasions of that activity were also slim. Certainly no member of his classes. The rescue at new years, further...a lot of people....Alois' failed purification. What else? The battle surrounding Vespa, but I exchanged no names with any then.

Idly, he set hand to stroking the long, silver flank and side in his lap. Looking at the Mauvian, and thinking of the effect of computers not finding someone brought the answer to the fore, "She was one of the senshi at the Black Watch founding, not that much has come yet of it....she is missing?"

The upgrades to the visor weren't immediately of consequence, a point set aside on a near mental shelf to return to in a few moments while other wheels still turned. And finally, at long last, drowse release its final hold to put circumstances together, "Was she one of the prisoners taken? And not among those rescued?"

The guardian relaxed as she was petted, viewing the room upside down through slitted eyes. She would have been content simply to accept adoration, but questions were asked, keeping her from drifting into a pleasant half-sleep state.

"Yes." Ash sighed, her forepaws curled to her chest. "She's one of mine, one of the senshi I awakened. Her name was on the list of those taken, but there has been no sign of her since the rescue. I went back into the fun house, after it cleared out..."

The grey cat squirmed and something fell out of the air to make a soft, brittle sound as it hit the floor. A broken bit of shell, crusted with something dark that was probably blood when it was fresh.

"That's all I found." She said as she glared upside down at it, her tail expressing her irritation. "I've been combing power signatures with HQ's computers ever since, but I'm coming up with nothing. Either they're dampening her signature, like at the fun house, or she's powered down... Or dead. Or corrupted. Its just... frustrating. It reminds me too much of that... dream. The one where I'm searching for someone I can't find."

She rolled her shoulders, little bones shifting against his legs.

"The computers are the best tool I have right now. I could comb the city on foot, but I doubt I would have better luck. Its too much ground to cover... The only other thing I can do, I think, would be to ask you senshi to watch for her." Lifting her head, she gave him a hopeful look, all large eyes and perked ears. It was full on kitty cuteness power, belly up in his lap with her paws in the air. "Would you? I mean, at least tell me if you turn up some scrap of her?"

The shell was easily retrieved and examined closer. "Usually pieces of our uniform disappear when we power down, don't they? I've given flowers to people before, usually on that assumption or...did someone mention it? I don't know. Its too fuzzy.... Though everyone staying powered up as long as they did over that period of time was impressive already. When I've passed out before, I tend to wake up in civilian clothes. What the difference is, I couldn't say. "

"And whether this being here means that she's not powered down even since then, weeks and weeks later.... Or dead? I don't know. It seems like, as a piece of the magic attached to or provided by any senshi's homeworld, like magical DNA, some sort of information should be able to be tracked from it through some equally magic device. As much as anything 'seems' of making sense in dealing with magic. " The mention of corruption was an uncomfortable one, but also possible. So was being killed, though the shells still existing presence felt like it pointed away from the latter.

"You said you were scanning with the computers....for power signatures...those based off the powered senshi themselves and the sense-able signatures we can all feel? What about trying to locate her through her phone? Mauvians seem to have a pretty decent access to ...Otherspace where items go. The phone still exists, even if she doesn't have it out. Can you track a phone in Otherspace? Regular cellphones, if crime fiction and investigation is to be believed, can be traced through triangulation of the signals off local towers. Can you do something like that if the cell GPS function signature itself isn't strong enough? What do the senshi phones even use, since it isn't likely Verizon's towers or the satellites around Earth. "

"We should definitely try to locate her. And yes, I'd absolutely tell you if I found something. Can we put a notification out on the blast system? We should get search teams out."

She watched him look over the bit of shell, relaxing back against his lap.

"I'm afraid I don't know for sure. I haven't given anyone a piece of the outfit I wear when I girl form and I haven't received anything from anyone, so I don't have first hand knowledge of it. The piece you hold argues that things stay, but despite recognizing it as a piece of Amphitrite's uniform, I can't be 100% sure it actually is." She sighed as she tilted her head, giving herself a new angle of view on things. Green eyes narrowed, considering the idea of 'magical DNA'. Logically, something like that should offer a way to track the one it came from with the right set up, he was right about that. But...

"You're not wrong... but it would take time and research to build something for that purpose. I don't have anything that tracks right now except for the HQ computers. I would have to start from scratch. Its not impossible, I think, but weigh the time it would take against other search methods..." The cat shrugged before she rolled, jumping smoothly from the warm lap she had claimed to retrieve her visor. Once it was fitted snugly to her head again, she returned and sat primly in the center, her tail curled around herself and back to his chest.

A touch of her paw to the plastic bulb on the side and the visor suddenly began to glow in a way it had not before. The angle she sat at would probably make it hard for him to see the information that scrolled across it's surface, but a glowing keyboard with a strange configuration had appeared hologram-like before her and another touch of paw brought the display up in the air before them, sized to be shared. It was a little of the future had appeared in this small space, glowing bright and Ash couldn't help the smug set of her head as she waved a paw towards the map she had brought up. Points of different colored light moved about it like ants.

"This is a map of the city, with the power signatures overlayed. Each kind is color coded. The gold ones are senshi, who are logged in the HQ computer's database. The purple ones are Negaverse and my headset is acting something like a tower, sensing outwards from my location. The range is limited though... its no more than you would have gotten if you had scanned with your phone. Most of the functionality is because I used the guts of a senshi phone to upgrade it..." She hummed softly to herself as she worked the keyboard, flipping through a couple of screens with inscrutable coding text.

"I'm afraid I don't know for sure what the exact mechanics of the phone system are." There was frustration in the statement, echoed in the curling of her tail. "I haven't had the time to investigate it... but if I had to hazard a guess, it would be something akin to the Internet, maybe, where each phone acts as a server, or a point in the network and its own, self-contained tower at the same time. I don't have access to your personal subspace, its entirely self-contained. Its why I couldn't just force a mass update of all the phones to the new versions. They're all tied into you and your magic, not any one central thing."

Flipping back to the map, Ash settled back and stared broodingly at it, watching the lights move about.

"I suspect its the senshi itself, on second thought, that is the 'tower'." She said after a moment, feeling through the idea. "The phone is just... an extension. Maybe. Its just... a theory, as everything else is. Which means without being able to find her power signature, I wouldn't be able to reach her phone... but it doesn't mean I will stop trying. Its one more avenue to explore, at least. A possibility to strike off the list after examination."

A soft sight slipped from her, a reminder of why she had come here, rather than brood on her own. She didn't like this helpless feeling.

"I will draft a notice for the blast system. Maybe someone will have seen something."

'Weigh the time.' Hours wise I expect it is actually rather the same, Ash, whether it is 20 scouts out searching the city for 10 hours each for 200 total hours or one mauvian building a brand new machine over 200 hours. The hours isn't the key, its where and how they're spent. The best answer would have been both, since they're not mutually exclusive.

"Getting a blast out...make sure to included not just a call for information, I can direct volunteers on a search. We can get out in pairs if there's enough. Having some who have access to vehicles would make it go faster- wrap a trench coat around a senshi with their gps active in the passenger seat so that traffic cameras and passersby don't make connections to license plates. Cost will be gas and/or car rentals. But that will cover more ground quickly than just running about. If there's searchers without cars, though, they can be assigned to the downtown highrises and rooftops that are probably out of car-gps range. If we can get eternal senshi or knights on it, their ranges are further. Even just enough people, if not eternals and knights, would be enough to canvas the greater metropolitan area in maybe 12 hours by car without missing any overlaps of scan distance."

Technically you could be working in the meantime on starting research on the things we don't have, but that's probably too directorial. There may already be other projects in process, or there may not be enough people and a Mauvian can sit in a passenger seat scanning as well as someone else.

"The sooner the better, really, but everyone might not be able to get time off immediately. Maybe three days? Tomorrow the earliest, whoever can come. Then skip a day...and then a skip of three...in case people need to ask off or switch shifts with others. So Day 1, Day 3, Day 7. If we can field so many. In the very least you and I can go out....the other executors. Athene might be able to convince Ida to help from the PSSG. Or whomever their other members...Ganymede...maybe there's still presence of the Jovians. "

Ash nodded absently as she sat on his lap, kneading him thoughtfully through the blanket between them.

"Mmm... if the computers can't find her power signature, searchers aren't going to find her by it either. Proximity isn't going to get through the dampening effect of a cat." She mused. "If you think cars canvasing the city would help, then I trust your judgement, but I'm feel like a more direct search would be more helpful. Either she is being held somewhere, which limits places to those where a human could be hidden and held for a long period, or there is someone who knows where she is that we need to... talk to."

Interrogation was not her strong suit... but turn about was fair play, wasn't it? The fastest way to find Amphitrite would be to have whomever had her take them to her, but finding that person could be as difficult as finding the senshi herself.

"I'm going to have to bow to you in directing the search... I hardly know where to start. Drafting the message I can do, and gathering volunteers. I can work on some sort of solution for tracking her through the seashell in the meanwhile as well." She turned to look back over her shoulder, a touch of her paw cutting out the hologram projection to return her visor to its resting state. "Thank you, Quenton... for helping me. For giving me direction."

Hana says its all good with her! We can plot this out <3

They had the funhouse dampened, yes, and the point of the canvasing for aura's is only partway for the purpose of detecting her specifically. Leaving agents from such a location, or locating chaos members will be easier and faster in a canvas effort. And, as you say, elbow grease direct searching locations that have little enough public traffic to pose as possible fronts. At least out of senshi or knights that are willing to do so. "

Quenton took a long breath, images of held agents in the dreams of days future and passed into questionable accuracy flitting through the back bleachers of thought. "I can handle interrogation. I looked over some of the history and psychology of it back when I was more actively hunting and trying to make an end of Wolframite."

It is what the Shadows did, when not capturing subjects TO interrogate. "Thank you, Ash, for be willing to talk to me of it. We can do more together than apart. I'm always willing to do whatever best I can offer for you and what you need."

Ash stretched, her spine arching, before she sat back and called up her phone screen again. Her paws touched the command pad in rapid series as she sat erect and focused.

"I'll remember that, Darling." She said with a smile, the tip of her tail twitching. "I'm going to draft that message now... there will be some time before we see responses to this I think. Why don't you go back to sleep for a bit? I can wake you if something happens."

This will work... we can find her, bring her home. I can prove I'm a good guardian. It won't be a living repeat of that dream.
