He saw the red-head out of the corner of his eye and tensed. He hadn't seen Rep in some time aside from him passing in the distance. It was hard to remember a time that he would text Rep, wanting someone to talk to or just wanting to casually hang out with the Sun. In the months after, he hadn't been able to feel like he could find any type of replacement. Rep had been there from nearly the very start, and they had been a tight trio. Him, Rin, and Melvin. Now it – was all gone.

And yet…..

He continued firing, trying to keep the small fires of hope going in such bleak circumstances.

If he could fix it. If he could bring everything back to near normalcy, would Rep come back too? Could they have it again? That trio. That something special that made him feel as if he had some semblance of a family here on the island?

Or was he just trying to rebuild the find enough scraps of a burned bridge?

In the end, he felt raw every moment Rep was near. He wasn't sure if the man would do or say anything. He hoped to hear from him again, hungered for a conversation, a bit of small talk, like before, but he also cringed at what he might say now. Yet, being ignored was even worse. It was confirmation that Rep had moved on and that the friendship they had was undervalued and never something Rep had relied on as much as Melvin still wished to rely on.

The dummy on the training field jostled from another plasma hit.

He took a deep breath, trying hard to not make it obvious he was watching him.

To say Rep was more aggressive than usual of late was an understatement. He wasn't allowed to attack people without warning out and about in the facility, but on the training fields everything and anything was fair game. They couldn't run to a lead about it, they couldn't complain with grounds that he required repercussions, all people could do was suck it up and fight back or run. He wanted their fear, he didn't want their subjugation.

Even someone running away was food for Marie.

That day pickings were slim, for the most part until he spotted the familiar flare of a familiar weapon. It had taken him a bit to register it, distracted by attacking a dummy himself, but when he did the reaction was immediate, Melvin had hurt him - had LEFT him - and there was only one way to make recompense for that.

He retargetted and this time as he charged, he did not aim to strike the dummy but the far more literal dummy he considered Melvin to be.

He refocused, looking down the line of his site and firing again. The dummy's head was splattered.

A glance at Rep. The man attacked his dummy again.

Another breath out and a squeeze of the trigger. Shoulder.

Rep seemed to move back from his dummy, ready to go again.

Inhale in. Inhale out. Refocus. He knicked a side.

Melvin glanced again and jerked back when Rep was nearly upon him coming at full speed when only second ago Melvin had seen him further down the field.

"HOLY ******** CHRIST!" He shouted, jumping out of the way and turning Saliva on him.

"ARE YOU NUTS?!!"

The Sun had always been a spontaneous person, but spars in the past had come with a text message or at least a wave. For him to come out of the blue, looking that way, it wasn't like anything he'd been on the receiving end before.

No explanation was forthcoming, instead Rep simply swung Tracey straight at the blonde man, his expression fixed and intent, his eyes seeming far away. With other people there was a certain level of joviality, with Melvin it was personal and if it had not been for the wards on the training area itself, it would be an attack with far more serious intent.

The blade went down, the weapon slamming down beside him on the ground, scrapping against the side of his shield. Eyes wide, eh breathed hard and short as he looked at the blade beside him. This close, he could see the dark ragged cracks and the strange wire about it.

What had happened to Tracey?

Quickly turning to look up, he stared up at the man, his large shadow over him as he saw him get ready again for another blow.

It was far from what Rep had looked before, all cocky smiles, bright eyes, and long, well-kept hair, instead dragged through hell without a break.

"What did I do to you? Why are you attacking me?!" He scrambled to his feet, stepping back and raising Saliva up.

"I haven't even said anything to you!" Nothing that could cause Rep to then take it personal and get upset with him.

Well, since he already being attacked, he turned his head slightly to look at his face more. "You look awful." He had asked for medication on Twitter. Was this the reason why?

The shot knocked Rep back, but he rapidly recovered, gritting his teeth. "You are here, so you'll ******** do for what I need." he stated grimly. "And I like hurting you more than anyone else, other cunts didn't betray me the way you ******** did."

And again he leapt forward with absolute insistence, striking at the Life hunter again.

He was hit back, but it barely caused him to step back. He knew Rep's force, had sparred with him before, and had worked alongside him on missions. He had seen Tracey cleave apart horrific odds and left him awestruck in the middle of battle.

This felt – sloppy.

Weak.

Rep was a full hunter with much more experience and passion backing him than Melvin had, and for once during their spars, he didn't feel as if was going to get taken down in 3 swipes.

Maybe he's just overly angry? Maybe he's not focusing enough.

He tried to reason but the cracks on Tracey said otherwise.

He bristled at being referred to as just something that was there. Something that fitted a need but not overjoyed him. An object – not as a friend.

But….Rep was talking to him. They were sparring again.

He couldn’t help feeling a bit of giddiness at Rep looking at him again.

Then –

"BETRAY YOU?!!" He bristle, gritting his teeth at the accusation that HE was the one at fault here. "I TRUSTED you and ONLY you with helping me, of telling you what happened, and you turned your back on US. You LIED to me! Then you tried to kill me and never spoke to me again!"

"You’re the one that turned your back on me!"

He had been called plenty of things before by Rep, but this time, the simple word 'c**t' came with pure feeling. Rep meant it, and it tore him deep inside.

He didn't just hate him just like anyone else on the island. Rep wanted to kill him.

.... All the world will be your enemy, Prince of a Thousand enemies......

Shoulders hunched as the Queen flashed through his vision, the backdrop of the training fields shuttering to that of the Blue Kingdom's before flashing back to Rep again.

Melvin hurt. He knew he would, the other hunter despite his personal misgivings about his abilities was fully capable of dishing out damage equal to his rank. Where he had doubts it seemed at least that Saliva had none. The strikes crashed against his shield and almost threw him off his feet - would have if not for the weight of Tracey keeping him stable. It was still jarring to have his defences peeled back and to be able to feel the harshness of attacks on a dangerous and vibrant edge even through the cotton-wool softness of the wards on the fields.

The pain was what he wanted, renewing old bruises, refreshing injuries sustainted through his relentless assault on other hunters, his pursuit of the fear he needed.

"You ******** betrayed me. You asked for my advice when you didn't ******** really give a s**t about what I said. I told you it was a scam, I told you I had a bad feeling about it. You shunned me for it. You told me you didn't want to speak to me again, I just ******** obliged you."

Twisting the blade in low he brought the serrated edge to bear on Melvin's side, narrowing his eyes coldly. "You never wanted my friendship just like you never wanted Rins, you just ******** want people to echo back the lies that bounce around inside your ******** skull."

"I thought you'd be happy! I thought you'd be excited to know we could get her back! I wanted you here to help me because she saved us! Because she –" He caught himself, eyes freezing as his brain cranked shut before restarting.

"I was always there by your side when you really needed me, and I thought you'd be by mine. I thought you'd want her back but you don't! Weren't we always together? The three of us? Don't you even care about getting that back?!"

Saliva shook in his hands as he stared back at the other hunter. Even now, he wanted nothing more to have Rep beside him. To fight together. He wanted to take him to her, but if Rep knew……..

If Rep knew about Rin, where she was –

He'll kill her.

His insides seized up as he thought of Rep cleaving Jan in half, to hear her not scream. No. Not screaming. He would have wanted to have heard her one last time……….but instead he heard nothing. He head her fall and that sound of nothingness left behind.

"We can get it back if you'd just believe me. We can have it back like it was, but it can't be that way without you. Not with just two. Why won't you just make this work?"

The blade stabbed his side, but as he stumbled, he reached out, gripping Rep's arm and look at him. "Didn’t you always talk about instincts? About feelings? Rep – I know this can happen. I can feel it in me. I wish you'd just believe me. We can make things perfect again. The three of us. It can all go back to how it was, but I need you there with me."

His hand gripped desperately to that muscular arm. "I only ever told you because you are the only person I trusted that much to know about Clarice. About what we can do. You two, …You and Rin… are the only people I care about here. I thought you cared about me. About her. I can't --"

He couldn't have what it was life before without him.

"We can't let this go. I can't let her go."

"Still talking in circles." Rep said grimly. "You aren't well man. You are ******** off the deep end. s**t will never be the way it was, that's the ******** nature of time. You can't go back, you can only go forward and make the ******** best of what's given to you."

He swung again but this time went wide, giving Melvin a look as he remembered another point he'd wanted to make.

"And don't ******** talk to me about instincts, you don't have any ******** instincts. Mine smell a rat a mile away with this s**t you've gotten tangled up in, you had no ******** survival instinct, not even a ******** tiny bit."

He bared his teeth.

"You are still the walking dead, as much a ******** zombie as the s**t that's been attacking people, living a delusion cause you are ******** scared of moving on."

"No. Nonono no. I can – I can make this work. She needs me to make this work. It's the only thing she needs right now. I have to stand by her. After all the times she stood by me. After all the times I didn't measure up. Couldn't measure up. I have to – I have to make it up to her. She believes in me – believed enough to protect us - and I can't disappoint her."

He jerked back, covering his face and head with his arms when Rep swung. The Lifer continued to protect himself when it missed, listening to his breathe as he looked at Rep between the gaps in his arms.

You had no ******** survival instinct, not even a ******** tiny bit.

He never had those instincts. He wasn't ingrained with some primal skill like these people. He wasn't a fighter. He wasn't a hunter. He wasn't anything. He wasn't here. He wasn't right. His makeup – was wrong.

Then did it matter if his survival instincts weren't here? What did it matter if a hunter died that was -

- obsolete?

If it came to it…..he had to make that exchange back. To right it. To make her take back that decision, that action, that said that he was worth it.

Because she had been wrong.

Melvin dropped his hands and returned to stepping closer.

"Times been changed before. Places have been changed. We lived other lives. They made it happen. We can make it happen. I can't disappoint the faith she placed in me. If I did….If she took that hit for me…for us….because she thought we were something…….and I wasn't ……then what …"

He placed a hand over his gun, squeezing it as he held it closer.

Her body dropped upon his….warm blood seeping into his coat.

She said nothing. He hadn't been there for her. Had never been there for her. She had been a hunter. She had been a Lifer. She had been worthy of being here and living. She had always protected him – because she thought he needed it. But if he couldn't prove himself worthy of that protection, that he was nothing just as he knew he was nothing, then she did all that for nothing.

He looked up at his once-best-friend.

"……then what kind of monster am I?"

"You can't ever ******** make it work, she'd dead and you are ******** months later still ******** denying her the rest she deserves." He wanted to break Melvin, hurt him torture him until he understood what was happening. It was like nails on a chalkboard to him, to hear someone so wholly and entirely wrong, to hear someone that - despite all his best efforts to file away and forget - he still cared about, get hurt. Melvin was walking into death and he couldn't stop him, no matter what he did.

"We didn't control any of that s**t, those other lives we didn't choose, they just ******** happened. She didn't choose her death it happened, the world just has s**t happen you aren't ******** god Melvin. You are just a ******** delusional man."

It enraged him, Melvin was spitting in the face of everything he'd lived through, ultimately saying that he should just ressurect his mother, find his father, fix everything by recreating some other world. "She took a hit because she ******** WANTED TO YOU DUMB s**t. How DARE you question her ******** love and sacrifice, she was there, it happened, you want to ******** control her even now. Even now she's GONE."

And as he swung this time he let out a yell of sheer fury, frustrated at Melvin and at his own ineptitude.

AND WHY CAN THEY CHANGE THINGS – CHANGE US – AND WE CAN'T? Why! Why can those monsters decide how our lives go and have that power when we can't? Why can you believe they can do it and we can't?"

He took the hit, stumbling back and falling. It hadn't been strong. Rep's weapon hadn't been hitting as hard as it could. Where was that power from before?

Curled in, he pressed the gun to his brow as he looked wide-eyed and shaking at the ground.

"I'm not controlling it. I'm fixing it. That love. That sacrifice. I don't deserve those things." His looked down, head turning as he muttered something else before looking back up.

"You don't know. Don't know what she said. She doesn't want to be gone. She wants back home. I have to let her come back. She said she needed me to fix this. I need to fix it."

She wasn't gone.

Looking up, he bite his lip before he whispered. "She's here." She said she needed him to bring her back. The dream. Jan. They all came step by step to him and now…….

…..now there was a new hope. A new possibility.

Rising back to his feet, he stood and held the gun once more.

"She should have never had to make that choice. She should have realized she was better off. I should be gone, Rep. It would make those things right." The world needed better more capable people, and good people like Rin should have never been with people like him.

People who let a young, beautiful hunter take that hit for him.

"It can't just – happen this way. It shouldn't work like that. I can't..can't let it just happen this way. It's not right."

He squeezed his eyes tight.

"I'll make it right -make it right."

He'd change her decision for the better.

And he squeezed the trigger.

"BECAUSE THATS WHAT THE ******** WORLD IS." He couldn't understand how anyone could ever in all seriousness defy the unachangable nature of the universe. Things happened, usually awful things, things you didn't expect that hit you like a truck out of left field and left you broken and bleeding. The world wasn't fair, you could do anything, any number of good deeds and you'd get ******** over just the same as the a*****e. "The monsters aren't human, they ******** are just energy with a face, they can't die but that is their ******** downfall."

He shook his head. "You don't have a ******** clue, she can't talk to us anymore cause she's gone. Gone onto wherever the ******** our energy goes. We can't come back its like being a human 101. Be born. Die. Those are our two ******** jobs."

He recoiled as he was shot and dropped to the ground, catching himself only on his fingertips, but just as quick he was up again.

"You'll do nothing but ruin ******** everything. Maybe you should ******** be gone."

"She – " And then he stopped, looking at the other hunter with a slow realization.

Rep had already moved past Rin. He was done and because of that, he could not see that she was still here. He could not believe it because to him, she was buried. To him, she was a closed chapter. To him, he continued walking.

And maybe that was another missing piece he had. No instincts. No easy way to walk ahead.

All those hunters that came in laid in stretches and roasting with their dried limbs sticking out of the Sahara sand. They ahd all seen them come and go, and he thought he was like that. That they were just – bodies that drifted in and out of the background. That that meant he could move briskly with the same pace as everyone else.

Another day. Another hunter.

But they weren't Rin. He never laid down beside any of those hunters and curled a finger between a freshly-washed lock of hair.

He didn't notice how their face wrinkled when they smiled or yelled or concentrated hard on paperwork.

He hadn't smelled them lingering on a pillowcase just before he did a load of laundry. Felt the soft elastic of her underwear just before his fingertips dragged to bare skin.

His pace had stopped.

You'll do nothing but ruin ******** everything. Maybe you should ******** be gone.

His pace should have stopped then and there, because he shouldn't have been here.

zombie.

Rin was alive – he was supposed to be dead.

….ruin ******** everything.

He already did that.

Looking up, he raised the gun again. "You're right…."

The green runes glowed brightly as Saliva charged.

"but not yet…."

He had work to do.

He squeezed the trigger, letting the Fear energy hit Rep's shield and absorb into it.
