Celestianite fluttered her tail fin, debating whether she wanted to go to her alcove by the beach today or stay in the water. Her indecision had brought her to the warm shallows, where her voice barely carried over the pounding of the salt waves against the shore. She was just at the edge of the threshold where she could safely tread water without worrying about being beached, and it was there that she sat, humming in the warm waters.
After a moment, she sighed out a stream of crystalline bubbles, held in place by the magic of her breed. Calculating the size of each one, she poked her hoof at one. It let out a ping sound and shattered, dissolving in a million tiny bubbles that fled toward the surface. Celestianite's eyebrows went up, and she poked another one, a bigger one - its sound was deeper when it popped, and one by one, she popped all of them, trying to absorb the sounds they made. Who knew? she thought, sticking her head above the surface to take a deep breath. Lungs full, she blew more bubbles and grinned. So much potential. As she popped them, her humming voice became a singing one, sweet but wordless as she tried to find a tune that fit.

Handel nosed around the seafloor, looking for anything of interest. The bells on his collar making soft sounds as he moved. Each one carefully arranged so that they gave off the next pitch in the sequence from highest along the sides to the big deep bell in the center of his chest. Granted not many would be able to tell that, but he could, even underwater he had a good ear for anything musical. He pulled his head back shaking gunk away from his nose. No, nothing hiding in the sand that might be used to produce a note. Disappointing really, the last few storms had really blown in some fascinating things that he'd drug back to his home to add to his ever growing collection of noise makers.
Although it is getting a bit cluttered. he thought to himself. Might be time to do a little spring cleaning. he tapped a hoof against a rock and then froze as he heard a strange pinging noise. He looked around and didn't see anything close to him that could have produced that tone. Maybe the rock? He tapped it again and received only a dull thud in response.
He looked around as the pinging continued. This was quite the mystery and he needed to find what was making that sound. It was strangely familiar in it's own way...but he couldn't put his hoof on exactly what it reminded him of.
He frowned and started off in the direction that the sound seemed to be coming from. He was a little worried the closer and closer he got to the shoreline, but was less so when he finally spotted the source. Another Seathi, this one a mare though. He broke the surface of the water, tossing long mane out of his eyes and listened quietly as she sang and popped bubbles creating a tune. He watched fascinated, he'd never considered using the bubble net bubbles for anything musical before, in fact he hadn't even been aware they created sounds like that when popped. Utterly fascinating.
He didn't want to startle her, but found himself humming along in spite of himself in his mellow baritone, eventually getting loud enough for her to hear, adding a bass line to her melody line.

Celestianite did her best not to freeze when at last she heard the baritone floating down to her from above. Something was singing with her, and if she stopped - if she stopped and it was something predatory, she might get snapped up. If it was something less sinister, well... Better to be cautious than surf and turf.
Eventually, she ran out of bubbles to pop; the last one was a tiny thing, the ping so high that it was barely audible, and with it went her voice, soaring up and up and then coming back down again until she could turn and figure out where the other voice was coming from.
The first thing she recognized was the tail swishing in the water, not the little hooves paddling above it. And on the other side of the tail... A long, pale golden mane floated in the waves. Celestianite had never seen hair that color before, but that was not the only thing she had never seen before that adorned this so-far-headless seathi: he wore some kind of pad attached to his back, and above that was something that made a soft tinkling noise. The collar seemed far more magical than her bubbles - it even sparkled in the water. Soon, Celestianite's song was filled with words. "And I met a stranger there in the heart of the sea, and he called to me with song so sweet~"
Curious how he would respond, Celestianite tilted her head up toward the surface, trying to take in the distorted face above the waves.

He stopped his humming as he didn't quite hear the last bubble pop. Must have been an incredibly high note. He didn't think he even owned anything that could be that high. He didn't hear anything else now and wondered if he'd scared her. That wouldn't do at all. He wanted to know if she blew her bubbles in such a way to make them ping or if they did that normally. He frowned and ducked his head back under as he caught the first words of her song. Intriguing, more than that utterly fascinating. He wiggled a bit in excitement, it wasn't often he met anyone who had any interest in music. He surfaced and took another breath before sinking down below the waterline again and let himself sink down to near her level. He smiled a bit and took a moment to formulate his response, eyes all lit up with excitement.
"His eyes did light upon a maiden fair, comely like a rainbow and politely he did greet." he said bowing his head to her. He waited eagerly for her response.
This was fun. Perhaps the most fun he'd ever had...except for that one time he'd found out how the mysterious squeezey box thing he'd found had worked. Underwater it was hopeless but get it above the water and let it drain? Amazing, and the most unusual sounds. He bobbed a bit in the water as he remembered his experiments and completely forgot to pick a level and stick to it. Having sunk too low he flicked his tail a few times and focused back on the mare in front of him.

Unable to help her face as it heated at being called comely like a rainbow, Celestianite smiled shyly. How often had she begged a duet of her mother, her sister, and never thought to ask Eoin or Lorcan or Lazuli? This was fun, a different dynamic all together, though something about it seemed almost dangerous; he was a stranger, after all - but wasn't that part of the fun? Maybe?
Finally, Celestianite saw his face close up. His eyes were blue, bright and curious, just as she was certain hers were. Still smiling as he bobbed up and down a bit, Celestianite came up with her own response, glad that her lyrical drive hadn't stalled out yet. Sometimes she could think of a whole song in minutes, but sometimes it could take her days and weeks to make one work.
"Flaxen was his hair, our voices a lovely pair, there in the blue of the deep."

Handel's eyes lit up as she blushed, even flustered she was a sight. He smiled a bit and looked her over. Her fins were so bright and stood out against her body, he was much reminded of the way the sea looked after a huge storm, and then surfacing to find a rainbow arching across the sky. No matter how bad things seemed, seeing that burst of color against the sky was always so comforting...
He needed to focus though, coming up with impromptu lyrics was interesting and perhaps more tricky then he expected. He'd never done this before after all. Sung to himself of course, but this was different. Waiting for someone else to inspire the next verse, he was nervous and excited.
On the other hoof though...it would be nice to just speak with her. He'd come up on her so suddenly, he was lucky she hadn't swam off. It would be nice to introduce himself properly once they stopped singing.
He considered for a moment once she sang her line and thought quickly.
"Her eyes a lovely hue, a color bright and true, could make a sinner weep."
Not his best work...but it was serviceable. He hoped.

Celestianite's eyebrows soared upward at the line he sang, and then she blushed harder, looking between the male and the seafloor. The soft sand below her sparkled in the sunlight as the waves moved it. Her face flashed hot in the warm waters, and she swished her way a few feet further toward the sea, where it was a bit cooler. My eyes could make a sinner weep? That was a new one, and a slightly strangely flattering one... At least he did not weep, though. With what he had just sung to her, that would have been a rather good warning sign. Wow, that's intense.
Still, should she be wary? She had just met this stallion, if this counted as meeting him, and he was already turning on the charm. Or so it sounded - but he looked sincere, and this all seemed innocent. They were just trying to come up with rhymes to send back and forth, after all, and so what if they became about one another? Celestianite had started that, so she was to blame if it was weird.
She could feel her lyrics beginning to clunk out with her bashfulness. Try as she might, she could not come up with a response to that; compliments didn't normally fluster her, but ones in song sung directly at her? That was a whole different, tummy-fluttering level. She just hoped they were good flutters, and not the flutters of her instincts telling her to get her tail back to her herd. "Who are you?" she asked softly. All of this felt too good to be true; she had never met a musical male before, one who sang without coercion. Or sang songs other than rowdy looting songs, as was common in the Grail reef. She had thought she might have heard Flurry singing to his mer children when he watched over them at night, but either they hadn't remembered after they had come out of their shells or it had never been spoken of. Sometimes, that quiet, deep voice drifting up from the cavern below her family's had sung her to sleep, too.
Swimming a bit closer to the male as her blush began to fade, Celestianite circled him. He could not be from the Grail, unless she had missed him in passing for the entirety of her life. The purples and peachy colors of his coat didn't appear to be related to anyone she knew well, nor did his pale gold hair. Like her, though, he was a seathi-nixie hybrid, and that was something they had in common. Maybe he came from closer to shore - maybe he was a first generation hybrid. There were so many possibilities! Celestianite watched him with intense, curious eyes, waiting for his answer.

He realized he'd crossed some sort of line as the female's blush intensified and the slight flustering of before turned into full on embarrassment. Oops, he hadn't meant to push that far, although it had been an accident, he'd merely said the first rhyme that had come to mind for that last one. Even then he felt it had a spark of truth in it, otherwise he wouldn't of said it. He liked being honest in his verses as much as possible.
Her speaking voice was soft, or at least it was for the moment, but even then he could still hear the control, that came from vocal training. He wanted to ask the same question as her, but she'd asked first so it was only polite to answer before asking his own questions.
"My name is Handel." he said, his own speaking voice firmly in the baritone range. He bowed his head slightly to her before continuing. "A pleasure to meet you, my dear songstress. I hope I wasn't intruding to much upon your musical revelries. I'm just always eager to meet another musical soul." he said. "And it's been quite a while since I met someone with any vocal talent. You have a very lovely voice." he smiled a bit.
He watched her as she moved closer and scrutinized his appearance. Was he really that odd? Although they did appear to share the same mixed heritage. When was the last time he'd seen another mix like himself? Longer than he'd met anyone with more than a passing interest in music.
"And you are?" he asked feeling he was now entitled to his own questions now. "Where are you from?" He wanted to ask if there were more musically inclined individuals like her, not that she wasn't impressive on her own, but it would be nice to be able to have conversations with lots of different people about music. He then paused and then figured he should answer his second question himself for her without prompting. "I live in a cave near here along the shore." he gestured in the direction his home would be found. "Very much alone, except for my horde of music makers."
It suddenly struck him that that last part maybe sounded a bit odd. Would she know there were items that could be used to produce music? Well she knew about the bubble net so of course she had to know that there were lots of things out there that could be used to produce a note, but for his own comfort he added, "A strange and varied collection of odds and ends that can all be used to produce a note." he finished with a nod and felt a little less awkward.
