The training field was rapidly becoming Chance's second home; or at least, it was becoming one of his more popular places to spend his time. Whether it was late at night, dragging his telescope out to stare upwards at the sky when he couldn't sleep (which was basically every night as it was), or during the day when he was trying to get the hang of using the bow and arrow, it didn't matter.

And this was one of those days; around two or so, Chance had dragged himself out onto the field yet again, dressed in a pair of skinny jeans and a baggy white shirt imprinted with cheerful yellow stars, a pair of fingerless gloves on his hands as he summoned Asher again.

{ you should take it easy }

Yes, yes, of course, Chance thought cheerfully, pulling an arrow into existence and notching it against the bowstring. "All right, let's see how well this works..."

Rep had also spent a long time lately stalking the training fields and garnering himself a reputation as that crazy guy who had a tendency to jump the unwary and start fights with people otherwise minding their own business.

He recognised Chance and quietly crept up on the other man.

And it was frankly startling how quietly the redhead could move when he didn't have his weapon summoned, creeping up inch by inch while his attention was elsewhere. He summoned only when he was in striking range, swinging the enormous axe.

"Surprise spar!" he barked with a laugh, it was turning into quite a battlecry.

Fortunately - or maybe it was unfortunately - for Chance, he wasn't one that was easily surprised. Still, he wasn't exactly expecting a large redheaded man to leap out at him from nowhere, axe swinging towards his torso, and Chance had about one and a half seconds to realize what was happening before the weapon had caught his side, spinning him a little.

"What the ******** - "

Staggering, Chance dragged his bow up, hastily stringing an arrow. His expression was more confused than annoyed, and when he saw who it was, it relaxed into something a little more amused.

"Hey, Rep, hello couldn't just do?" he asked with a laugh, releasing the bowstring with a snap; except his aim was off, and the arrow went somewhere to the other man's left, rather than straight on.

Rep did enjoy the differences in the ways that people responded to being jumped, it said a little about their sturdiness and Chance seemed pretty unshakable, quickly switching to combat mode without too much fluster.

"What's the ******** fun in Hello?" Rep replied with a delighted and toothy grin to the other man, relieved that the initial arrow went wide. "You can say it so much better with an axe." And to illustrate this point, he brought Tracey around again in a low sweeping slash.

Chance shifted his footing, but Rep's axe was both enormous and extremely hard to dodge. It slammed into his legs with a resounding smack, and his knees buckled against the sheer weight of it, Chance falling partly to the ground. He stabbed the tail end of his bow into the grass to keep from completely collapsing, grinning up at the other man.

"Well, I do have to admit, I've never been greeted so violently before," he said cheerfully, hauling himself back to his feet a little unsteadily and stringing another arrow with quick hands. There was that whole thing about trying to fight long range against close-range, but maybe he could get some enough distance to shoot.

"Well," Chance amended thoughtfully. "I take it back. I've never been greeted so violently with an axe before."

His arrow managed to graze this time, though it wasn't nearly as dead on as he'd hoped. Still, Chance just gave Rep a smile.

"So. How have you been, Rep?"

"An intense greeting is always better than a halfassed one." Rep beamed at the other man. "Gotta say it with feeling sometimes and ain't nae better hello than a giant axe."

The arrow stung as his shield ate the damage from it, and he rubbed his shoulder briefly before hefting Tracey up once more. "Oh cannae complain." he said ironically as he leapt forward to swing again.

"Actually I kin, I complain aw the time. But it could always be worse, the problems I have I can sort out with enough fighting apparently. So here I am."

"I find that generally you're right about that," said Chance in reply, waving an arrow around in a noncommittal sort of way. "I'm not one for giant gestures of excitement, but I do appreciate them, especially when they're intended for me specifically. And giant axe or not, an enthusiastic greeting is well worth its weight."

He notched the arrow into the bow and tried to dodge Rep's next swing, though it caught him by one of his legs, and Chance did a rather silly looking sort of jump and a skip trying to free himself. He dragged the wire back, taking several steps to attempt to gain some more distance.

"Fighting, I've found, is an excellent way to alleviate stress," said Chance grandly. "Plus, it's kind of fun, I'm just sort of getting used to that side of it."

Rep nodded. "Aye, most of the people I hang around don't care much for huge gestures, but I like, make up for that. I care way too ******** much about everything." He couldn't help but laugh, in an oddly good mood. Calmer people seemed to relax him somewhat and Chance's composure in some ways put him in mind of Jordan's cooler demeanour.

"Aye fighting though, its the best stress reliever, more if you can get traction without the wards." he mused with a toothy grin.

As the next arrow hit him he looked curious. "You know I always thought how ******** cool it would be to be able to just like shoot s**t from the roof and stuff without even having to be spotted. You ranged ******** get all the nice things." But it was said without malice.

"That's seems like a nice way to balance things out, doesn't it?" said Chance easily, flashing Rep a smile. "You say you care too much, but then you hang with people that are much more chill and it sort of keeps things balanced. Or something like that," he added with a small laugh. "Which end of the spectrum is your husband at? He one of those people for grand gestures, or is he the more subtle type?"

Rep had paused in the spar, and Chance pushed the tail end of his bow into the ground, an arrow half poised to shoot, though he didn't release it just yet. "I haven't done that myself, admittedly," he said, shrugging one shoulder in mild amusement. "I haven't really even been on a real mission yet, which is pretty sad. But I do have to say that having a ranged weapon has made it a little difficult to learn how to fight hand to hand, or close range."

He shook his head and laughed again. "Sometimes when I try to shoot an arrow at close range, it just winds up flopping onto the ground. It would be pretty cool to do a sort of secret ranged thing, though, like in spy movies and s**t."

"Aye exactly, it helps even s**t out a good bit with that balance. Loud or like, enthusiastic people wear me the ******** out, it ends up with some kind of like, amplifying effect." He seemed to brighten measurably from this momentary grimness however at the mention of Harrison. "Oh Ace is like, he's a ******** sap, but he's calm and steady, more for subtle s**t." He looked momentarily glazed as he considered any examples he could think of. "I guess more like, gentle words than like, candlelit dinners."

"And be glad you've no been on a mission yet, the less the better, they end in crazy ******** ways, its always dangerous. Still damn good practice for range I bet, there's a lot of fighting s**t its better no to get close to." he nodded.

"Maybe you can suss out out down the line. Be all like my arrow sends his regards."

He brought Tracey back up again, intending to feign a swing, to glance the blade in a friendly sort of way, but once again the axe was not weighted the way he was used to and everything did not turn out quite the way he'd expected it to. It hit with its full weight and he hurriedly said

"s**t! Sorry!"

"I seem to somehow be more comfortable around people that aren't ridiculously loud and overbearing," Chance mused, lifting a hand to rub at his chin thoughtfully. The people he decided to associate himself with on the island were people like Finn, Ripley, and Claude, all three of whom were vastly different - but at the same time, none of them was rambunctious or loudly enthusiastic (unless one counted other factors, but Chance ignored this).

"Candlelit dinners are overrated anyway," he said with a smile. "I like calm and steady people, they seem to be the easiest to be around. Too much drama or too much complications give me a headache, but I'm glad you seem to have found a good balance with your husband."

A laugh escaped Chance's throat. "One day down the line, I think that'd be pretty badass," he said and grinned. "I'll have to find myself a good ranged fighter to teach me how to properly fight close-range with a long-range weapon. Any recommendations - oof."

Rep's axe had slammed into him across the stomach, and Chance went down like a sack of potatoes, gasping for breath. The arrow he'd notched out of habit snapped out towards Rep,and Chance was on one knee, trying to get air back into his lungs.

"Nope, all good," he wheezed, smiling at the other man. "Any experience is good experience, right?"

A pause, and then -

"Well, that's a load of s**t, really, but anyway, no need to apologize, I'm fine."

"Loud cunts mostly just make me want to ******** hit them." Rep said. "And as expected, most of them really don't like that much and it just goes straight ******** downhill. Loudness is nothing through compared to like, arrogance. Arrogant bragging cunts are the thing I can't stand. Nothin wrong with being smart, but really smart people know to be ******** a wee bit humble."

He looked thoughtful at the question on weapons. "There are a lot of guys on the island who are good with ranged weapons, but no many I've seen up at close range. Kat is pretty brutal at close range. But for ranged in general, I'd say like, Bix, Gale and s**t. Long time ranged weapon wielders, they all would nae doubt have something to offer. Bix uses arrows too."

He was glad when the other man rose again, he did not want to KO or hurt him with what was an accidental cheap shot. He braced himself, letting the other man get a hit in when he was ready to resume the flow of the spar.

"Loudness has its perks," said Chance thoughtfully. "But I've kind of noticed that the the louder someone is trying to be, the less I actually feel like listening to them - arrogance falls under that category as well," he added, giving a little laugh. "Like you said, it's fine to have intelligence, but there's really no need to shove that in people's faces."

The name Bix was familiar - someone had recommended whoever it was before - but Gale was not, and neither was Kat. Chance tapped a newly formed arrow against his leg and mulled over this for a second before giving a mental shrug and dragging himself back into the fight.

"How'd you learn to wield your weapon?" he asked, with a nod at the enormous axe. "I mean, that's a pretty ******** huge thing you've got there, it seems like it would take forever to get the hang of it, but you've got it under control pretty well, from what I've seen."
