The start of the year was oft the start of new productions. The theater district, with its lights and marquees, was one of the few warm feeling places even in the dark evenings of January and February. It was earlier than his usual jaunts- but still black-dark and falling gentle snow. There were a few gentleman and ladies in evening wear down below the overhang and the smoke of their cigarettes spelled the story of why. The chatter seemed amiable- the intermission was underway and suits and gowns were refilling on liquor candies and drinks for the fifteen minutes before they returned to their seats. The symphony was doing well.

The modern dance stage across the way was just letting its crowd inside for the start. Ushers and doorman looked smart and turned out in their red jackets with gold ropes. The metallic caught the incandescent light in ways that explained why none of the companies had switched over to LEDs. The light didn't catch on Captain Titanlåvenite's uniform, standing in the shadows of the service grate walk used by maintenance workers behind the glowing art deco rectangle. He didn't need to complete an energy quota, but had come more out of habit. There were lots of people, so Lieutenants could have been gathering and needed to make turn ins. There was the vague possibility of seeing Colin in some hours, exhausted from performance and on his way home.

They almost never saw each other anymore. It was barely different from when the other had been overseas. Putting it that way is unfair. It isn't a fault of his. He has hours free, and I'm the one who is out all the time either at my job or on this dark business. The Negaverse. And all these people really no more than chattel to the throne? They are living. They are part of the prosperity of the Earth.

Standing in thought, he wasn't careful of the auras around. There were no other Lieutenants, Captains, or Generals near. Others could attack or approach as they wished. His heart was too much in sifting dream against what reality he had experienced.

Coming to the Theater District was becoming an almost frantic ritual since the night of the raid on the funhouse. Chariklo was fairly certain that Avacyn knew exactly where she was going and why, but she never spoke out against it. It was one of the things that Chariklo manifestly adored about her fiancé.

Logically, there was no real reason to keep coming here, to keep searching. At most she and Hvergelmir had spent perhaps twelve hours total together. Hardly something to get worked up over. But that didn't take into account five years worth of memories and friendship that hadn't happened yet. It was those memories that drove her and haunted her.

Those memories had turned her into a traitor to Chaos.

Shaking her head irritably, she slowed as she caught a Chaotic energy signature close by. Freezing, she felt a surge of hatred. Wasn't it enough that they'd taken her friend and likely hurt her (if the wounds on Pisces had been any indication)? Did they have to invade her place as well? Still, this was an opportunity. An officer meant information. If Hver was... well, presumably an officer would know anything of interest.

Creeping through the shadows, the tall Dark Mirror edged towards her prey.

When aura there did appear, it wasn't one of the Negaverse. A Dark Mirror Eternal hardly had any reason to need to see a captain, certainly not for energy turn ins. Maybe it is Nischal. It woudl be heartening if he is finally getting out of his room. Maybe he has come? Or maybe Remarque to ask after him. I could tell Remarque about his noble- he needs guidance and one of them to help him. They must have noticed by now how he never appears. Remarque seemed a fair lord to keep.

So he paid the aura near no heed of danger or subterfuge and still waited. The rest of the Negaverse may have soured relations with the mirror, but Titan lived with one of theirs. He was, so far as he knew, still allied with them on a personal level.

Sweet, holy Christ, what did the Negaverse feed its officers to grow them to such a size? Still in shadow, Chariklo eyed the massive officer and became very aware that her various wounds from the raid were half-healed at best. Ava would ******** kill her if she came home with more injuries. But she desperately wanted information and if the cost was a couple of extra lumps, so be it.

Still, it was a pity that this wasn't some tiny, easy to intimidate officer. Well, maybe she'd be able to bluster her way through. Taking a deep breath, she began to move again, wanting to sneak up on him from the back.

And when she was close enough, she reached out and pressed her forefingers into the small of the officer's back.

"Easy does it, big guy," she hissed. "I just want some information and if I have to use my magic on you to get it, I will, no hesitation. I should anyway. You don't belong in her place."

She couldn't help the tone of bitter grief that creeped into her voice, nor could she shake off a nagging sense of familiarity. She'd never met this guy before. Why was part of her insisting she knew him?

It was an unusual greeting, her staying at his back and what seemed...no, really were threats made no real sense to him. But it was a her, which was neither of Avior or Remarque. He didn't know what Dark Mirror Senshi it was, and less with her being behind him. And threatening if he turned around, essentially. "Hallo. You have whatever answers I can give you, if you ask. There is no need for threats. "

"When I felt you near, I'd hoped to speak with you- well, I'd hoped it was Remarque or Avior. Do you know them? They are Dark Mirror Senshi. I live with Avior, but he doesn't come out. I've been worried, but I can't command nobles. You could try, being of his court. Being a noble yourself."

He lifted a hand, facing the palm back to her, "Titanlåvenite. Or 'Titan.' May I have your name? "

Well. This was certainly the most chill person in the history of ever. Blinking a little and feeling slightly unbalanced by the almost gentle admonishments.

Confusion continued to set up housekeeping as the officer name dropped Remarque and Avior. And the knowledge that this dude lived with Avior! Certainly this was the first she'd ever heard of such a thing. If Avior didn't come out, what concern was it of hers, really? Memories of a time that hadn't happened swept up and caused her to snort audibly at the thought of Avior as a noble.

Being called a noble herself brought out a harsh bark of laughter.

"Baby, I am about the furthest thing from noble you can get. As for Avior, he can stay in his room and wallow all he likes for all I care."

Sighing a little as the hand and introduction came back towards her, she shrugged half-heartedly. Sure, why not. This intimidation and interogation session was already off the rails. It wouldn't hurt to be polite. For now.

Moving her fingers from his back, she placed her hand in his.

"Okay Titan, nice to make your acquaintance and all. Name's Chariklo."

She said her name, and he turned on his heel, to look at her. 'You could've made a fortune modeling for book covers, my friend.'

It was her. She wasn't a princess, and it wasn't one of the Guards' Barracks for those without the want or ability to keep their own quarters, but it was her. He had never met her, knew he had never met her, but he knew she liked drinking and dancing. He knew what tattoos to expect to see. She had been a friend to Nærøyfjord in those forward days. Her children had laughed and played at his side or clambering on his shoulders. "The formal alliance may be drowned between the worthy of our thrones, but I still count your people friends. "

It was safer not to offer direct gainsay of her feelings about herself or her companions-in-arms. Though it was disparaging to hear her abandon one so easily and summarily. It didn't sound like the woman in memory fighting beside them in the shadows. It didn't sound like the woman who made such a point of lifting Ida up when she grew too dark and closed. Time grows so near. I have to be careful not to give much away. Maybe she doesn't know things. Maybe she doesn't agree with them. Maybe she just doesn't care. She speaks of not caring. " It is good to meet you, Chariklo. What information were you looking for? I am not so good with information always...it isn't my branch. But I can try."

Chariklo jumped a little as the officer spun on his heel to look at her and wondered if her reputation as an alliance traitor was already making the rounds. Only he didn't attack. He didn't even look angry or affronted.

He looked familiar. Narrowing her eyes, she tried to place him. Why do I know you?

To cover her confusion, she laughed a little sheepishly and shook her head.

"You are one of the very few who does then, Titan. Especially since I've been making a point to insure that every knows my days as an ally are done. Truth, when you spun around like that, I was half expecting to be pounded into a red pulp."

For some reason her out of time memories flashed upon a dawning morning and a meadow with a freshly dug grave. Shivering a little, she lowered her eyes and rubbed at her arms absently. Ava wasn't dead, that day wasn't going to happen. She hadn't even had Hver or Naer or Faust's bodies to bury. She'd made little carvings for them.

Pulling herself from the memory, she sighed and tried very hard to make light of things.

"Well, you're polite. Which I should really be more appreciative of since I'm not in much shape for trying to fight you physically. You know, it's the oddest thing. You remind me of someone I know or knew. Or I'm going to know. It's hard to explain," she said in a soft, musing voice. Then, with another shake of her head, her voice took on a much crisper, more business-like edge. "Right. Information. You're people took a friend of mine at the year's start and I haven't been able to find her. Found a bunch of other people in an abandoned funhouse that had been taken though."

She couldn't help the shudder of horror that rippled over her as she recalled what had been done to Pisces. She could only imagine that the rest had been as badly treated if not worse.

"You seem nice enough, dude. But you work with a lot of sick ********. Just sayin'," Chariklo sighed and decided that she was tired of trying to be diplomatic. "Look, I need to find Hvergelmir, okay? I need to find her. And I need her alive and herself."

Her memory flashed to the last time she'd seen Hver and Naer before they'd snuck off to go be all ******** noble and s**t. The thought of Hver's spirit being corrupted or extinguished was painful. It wouldn't be allowed.

"If she's not," the icily calm edge to her voice scared her a little, "I promise you I will find a way to ******** end all of you and pull your precious little Rift apart stone by stone."

If she was as confused as she seemed, it was a catching thing. Stalwartly declaring enmity, complimenting manners and then going back to threatening someone's liege city was too much of a game of back and forth of friendly and hostile for Titan to sift through. It seemed wiser, at maybe safer, to take a step back and away from her. Eternal senshi had powerful magic, and while he could weather the effects through to the other side, he didn't prefer to risk it in proximity.

His mouth pulled into a line. I am your enemy. Alright, you have made that clear. What is one senshi as a threat, when a city of them in years has not touched the cloth hem of Metallia's power? They've not breeched fortress as a group. Even their royals. Even Princes and Princesses are insects. What can Chariklo do, except kill some agents. Just as all the Guard fell, unable to protect so many.

It must be she is worried, and lashes out with violence. That is not unusual. Many people do that.
" You do not make sense. You want an answer or you threat against my queen, my city and lands. Why would anyone answer, unless they were a coward? You say you aren't in battle shape. But I will answer you. We have not met, but I know what you mean of meeting and knowing. An Earth Knight. "

Titan's expression gentled, though his brows remained knitted. "Allies came to rescue captives. She might be at a house with visiting nurses or at a hospital now. She escaped."

"I want my friend to be safe and whole," Chariklo retorted sharply. "And for that, I'd do pretty much anything. You can understand that, can't you?"

Running one hand through her hair, she gave another bark of laughter, this time self-depreciating.

"And of course, I make no sense. I've barely been sleeping," she said softly. Mouth twisting into a grimace of mild shame, she reached out one hand, palm up in silent apology and truce. "I'm being a b***h, but thank you..."

She'd have said more, but Titan's mention of an Earth Knight brought her up short and left her gaping for a moment as the color drained from her face.

"How do you know about Naer?" she choked out, caught completely off guard. Really, she was too exhausted to deal rationally with this conversation. She watched Titan's expression soften. Chariklo flushed, then paled again as he told her that Hver escaped. Escaped. Oh, it was a lovely word. Wobbling a little as her knees literally went weak from relief, she reached out for the nearest solid surface to steady herself against. Which in this case was Titan.

Later she'd chide herself for her nearly hysterical display of mingled laughter and sobbing in front of a Negaverse agent. But at the moment, she didn't care. After a few moments, she hiccuped and managed to glance up at the tall officer, eyes bright and face streaked with tears. Managing a shaky smile, she rubbed one hand roughly against her eyes.

"I could ******** kiss you right now. I really could. She's safe? The senshi that Ida, another senshi and I rescued had been treated so brutally. I know they all had to have been and I'm sorry for asking this, but you'll tell me the truth right? Hver... her face. They didn't mar her face or take her tongue did they?"

Doubtless he'd think she cared more for her friend's looks, but Chariklo had a very different concern in mind. She'd been so desperately afraid that Hver's capture had been a sign of that awful future starting.

"Please," she said. "It's important."

She'd worry about how he seemed to know about Naer later.

Knowing and being. I am not sure which it is anymore myself. I thought it was 'know.' Kairatos seemed to understand it that way. Maybe. Hvergelmir spoke of it differently. Ida...I just don't know. And here is Chariklo, but she doesn't recognize him in me. So ...maybe it is to find the truth of him. If I can find some proof of knights in the RIft. There must be something, somewhere. Written or carved or something. I.....what language would it be in? That was an oversight he hadn't thought of before. What if the old Earth kingdoms spoke Latin like all history classes seemed to be?

Her breakdown and leaning into him was doubly unexpected. Titan lifted a big hands to cup around her shoulders, though. If she needed reinforcement then it was simple and right to give it to a Lady of her station. Even supposed enemies could understand each other as people outside of the fight- used to allow nightly truces to bring the fallen from the battlefield. He fished in his sleeve a moment, drawing out a handkerchief. The upgrade from regular disposable tissue was, amusingly or sadly, a result of Hvergelmir's own need at her glimmering cauldron. "Her smile remains pure and unmarred. She does not wear the nightmare. "

He offered the Dark Mirror Eternal the kerchief wordlessly.

The sympathetic hand on her shoulder was hardly to be expected. Still the touch was welcome enough and she didn't snap at him the way she might have had it been any other officer.

She broke into fresh tears, this time of pure gratitude, at the news that Hver's smile wasn't mangled. She took the handkerchief and hid her face in it as her shoulders shook from the force of her sobs. After a moment, she grew quiet again and glanced up.

"I owe you," she began in a thick voice, holding up her hand to forestall any argument. "Don't even try to fight me on this one. I owe you and I pay my debts. You just lifted about twenty years off my shoulders. Thank you."

Acting on impulse, she reached out to throw both arms around Titan in a bear hug. He might be Negaverse, but he was also the bearer of good news and for that alone, she was willing to overlook the other.

"I still wanna know how you know about Naer," her voice was muffled and wistful. "You remind me so much of him. I found Ida and I found Hvergelmir, I even found Babylon, briefly. But I couldn't find Naer after I woke up and it hurts."

The sudden relief from grief and stress combined with bone deep exhaustion was catching up to Chariklo quickly. Straightening slightly, she rubbed the back of one hand against her bloodshot eyes and laughed a little.

"Christ, listen to me soundin' all crazy," she muttered.

Titan quirked, a thin smile trying to ghost its way onto his mouth. She was demanding even in her offering favors. Maybe there is no asking at all, when it comes to any time and the Lady of Gulls, whoever it is, whatever the time, and whether it is dream or reality.

The arm from her shoulders was repositioned in her hugging to around her person gently. "Some of the Negaverse has had the dreams that trouble you. They trouble Lady Ida. And Lady Hvergelmir. I know the Hersir of Nærøyfjord from the same dreams. I will look for him soon, if I can find him or evidence of him. If it is real."

"You should get at least a shift of rest soon. Your strength will be needed. I think the escaped will want steady, quiet and comfortable company, not tearful or frantic. They will have enough fears and joys already storming in their own chests to turn from crying to laughing at a moment. They have been through very hard time." It felt so familiar, trying to brace her in her grey tempest. 'Your work, Our work, is not done yet.'

DaisyMilk

"It was real," the whisper slipped out before she could stop it. Giving a little cough to cover her confusion, she gave her eyes another swipe before managing to settle her expression into one of almost serenity.

"I hope it doesn't make me sound like a heinous cow, but I'm really glad that it wasn't just me, Ida and Amytis who woke up remembering that s**t. Though given the terror loop Amytis and I experienced, maybe I shouldn't be glad. I don't even know."

It was very comforting standing there and being hugged. And part of Chariklo badly wanted to fall asleep right then and there. Still, tired as she was, she made careful mental note of the fact that some of the Negaverse had had the same troubling dreams. Though for them, maybe it wasn't as troubling. Not something she wanted to think about.

"If you find him before me, please tell him that I miss him? And that it's not nice to worry one's friends," the last was said with a faint smile to show that she was mostly joking. The smile quickly faded at the reminder of what the captives had gone through. Poor, poor things.

"I doubt I'll be allowed to visit anyone, but Ida'll have ferreted folks out by now, I bet. She'll just have to be my huggin' proxy until they're well enough to come out and play with me."

Chariklo tightened her grip around Titan before completely letting go and taking a step back. A crooked grin flickered across her face as she reached out to grab one of his hands and give it a friendly squeeze.

"I am planning on passing out on my girlfriend as soon as I get home, so I promise I'll be good on that score. And ahh...," she paused for a moment, not entirely sure how to say the rest before shrugging mentally and sailing in. "I'm sorry I threatened you earlier. You're a good dude, Titan, and I really do owe you. And I am seriously hopin' that any futures encounters won't be on opposite sides of a battle line."

A giant yawn cut off any further words she might have said. Laughing a little, she took another step back.

"I think my body's trying to tell me something. And that something is I'll end up with a broken jaw if I yawn like that again."

"If I find him, maybe you will have chance to tell him yourself. " He didn't make any sudden moves as she pulled away. It sounded like intents to go, and he had no plan to hinder her. "If we must meet on field of battle, don't hesitate. It would be my honor to face you truly in battle. "

Girlfriend. They are not married yet. No children. Is it strange to miss the sound of voices that have never been heard yet? Or if they never are, to miss souls that haven't been? "I send her my best regards. And to you, Lady Chariklo. May your rest be at peace and not worry."
