Cybele was done. She was done dusting maybe a youma a week and acting like it was enough. She was done putting any real senshi responsibilities off until she 'figured things out.' Answers were not going to fall into her lap if she ignored the questions. That was obvious. Believing otherwise even for a second would have been stupid... and she'd been believing otherwise for months. The captive situation had been a reality check for her. If people had been captured and tortured and killed on her watch, it would have been awful. This was worse. It had happened while she'd been looking away.

So she hunted, properly hunted, for the first time in months. Answers, Chaos... it didn't really matter what she found, as long as she found something. Chaos was more likely, so she was on her guard. She'd chosen to search one of the larger parks, where people were more likely to be, and she walked down a well lit sidewalk through a corner of the park where she'd come to study once or twice during the day.

Merlinite was struggling. His guilt was overwhelming and he was really doubting what side he was meant to be on. Even though the senshi he and Painite kidnapped was on the Dark Mirror side of things, that did not make things any more or less complicated. He was not sure if it made him a traitor or not, or if these guilty feelings were tied into his general senshi affection or his duty to Chaos.

He was oblivious to all other things, wrapped up in his personal little hell and barely paying attention to the goings on of the faction he worked for, and the one he was meant to be fighting.

Feeling an aura nearby, he hesitated. Instinct told him to go and fight it, because it was a White Moon aura, but second thought told him to just ignore it and go home.

He moved through the shadowy part of the park, not taking to the paths just in case the lights betrayed him. He saw the senshi not too far away and knew she had to be able to feel him, with his aura so close. There was no real point in hiding any more, and he stepped out into the light, not calling his weapon.

"Looking for something, senshi?" he ventured to ask, telling himself that if he just did his job, things would be clearer. So far, that tactic had not worked.

Somebody stepped out of the shadows, and Cybele narrowed her eyes. She was the one hunting. She was the one who was supposed to be finding people and making dramatic entrances or sneak attacks or something, but that never seemed to happen and she was tired of it. The Negaverser asking about it only made it worse.

Somewhere underneath, she could tell that he wasn't trying to insult her. It didn't matter. Honestly, the anger she was feeling wasn’t really because of him. It was because she hadn't been a good enough huntress… and by extension a good enough senshi, a good enough friend… and even tonight, with her new resolve, she’d ended up as the prey.

She was done.

She was done failing.

“Obviously,” she replied, and her voice held the malice that his hadn’t. As she spoke, she rolled her eyes and began to walk towards him. “Why else would I be out here? It’s freezing.” Once she was a few paces away from him, she broke into a dash, aiming a punch in his direction.

Merlinite watched the senshi, frowning but doing his best not to let his thoughts be too obvious on his face. He did not feel immediately antagonistic, despite knowing he should have, though he saw the anger in her expression and understood that, while he was confused about who his enemies were, she was not.

He was her enemy, and it would always be that easy.

"I don't know. Maybe you like the view of the park at night, but like to dress up for the sight seeing." He sighed, offering a shrug of his shoulders.

She was moving when he was talking, and he almost missed her attack before she was swinging at him. That let him very few moments to actually react, and he only managed to pull himself backwards a step. It still meant getting punched directly in the face, though he at least managed to lessen the blow. It stumbled him, but he caught his feet under him and pulled his fists up.

"Whoa, a bit snappish, don't you think? You got a problem with questions?"

The moment Cybele's fist connected came with a small sense of satisfaction, but it was ruined when he stumbled backwards. She hadn't been in the most stable position, so she stumbled after him, and ended up having to spend a few precious moments regaining her own balance and shifting into a fighting stance rather than continuing to attack.

By the time she was glaring at him over clenched fists, he was glaring back. She was ready for his attack, but it didn't come. Instead, he was talking again, yelling at her for attacking him. She frowned slightly. If you were in the Negaverse, you didn't walk up to a senshi in the middle of the night and expect to not get punched in the face. That wasn't how it worked, and judging by his aura, he was experienced enough to know that.

Still, she didn't attack immediately.

"Questions? Is that what you want? All right. Why shouldn't I kill you?"

The question wasn't sarcastic. It was something she'd been wanting to ask for awhile.

Merlinite grunted, shaking his head.

"You're a senshi. I thought killing was outside your realm. Especially killing indiscriminately, just because I'm a Nega. I thought that was our bag." Folding his arms over his chest, he sighed. It was the same conversation he found himself in a lot recently.

And usually because he started it, which was odd for him. He was supposed to fight them and not question anything, right? Just like she said, and all the other White Mooners thought. He was the one that hurt and killed and put everyone in danger, and he used to like doing that. Thought he still did, but somehow could not force himself to do any of it.

"Anyway, what if the Nega you want to kill just for doing their job, doesn't want to be doing that job? If they don't follow their orders, they have bigger problems than angry senshi to deal with."

"I've killed someone just because they were in the Negaverse," she said flatly. Just talking about it made her stomach churn, especially with his reminder that it wasn't what she was supposed to do, but she tried not to let it show in her face or voice. "I know several senshi who kill first and ask questions later... if they ask questions at all."

She watched him shift out of fighting stance without lowering her fists. "They say it's a war, and killing Negaversers will save other people... maybe it's true." The war was complicated, and...

No. Thinking like that wasn't an option. Confusion had been her excuse for so long, but she was done with excuses. There would be time to think when she wasn't face to face with an enemy. For now... she wouldn't kill him unless she had to, because he'd reminded her that that would be a mistake, and because it was becoming increasingly obvious that he didn't want to fight, but she was wasn't going to leave and let him hurt someone just because he wanted her to. She was still hunting, and still furious at the Negaverse.

"Also, what happens to you if you don't follow orders isn't my problem. Stopping you is my problem."

That said, she threw another punch.

"Then you guys might as well be on our side. I know a Negaverse General that would love to meet you."

Painite was all for killing and maiming without asking any questions. Senshi, knights, civilians: nothing seemed to matter to her. Merlinite was not even sure if she would hold herself back if she had a reason to harm him, of all things, and that was half the reason he was too scared to face his doubt about what team he was on.

If she found out he was even distantly considering the very possibility of purification being the slightest option, she would no doubt murder him without a second thought. And in the worse way she could think of.

His death would certainly not be a quick one, for example.

Moving when she threw her punch, he finally made an effort to defend himself, lifting his arm to catch her hit instead of taking it to his face. He did not lash out, not yet, but he at least summoned his spiked club to his hand. She was not interested in talking, and maybe a fight was really what he needed.

Before, things hadn't been personal. He's found her when she was hunting him, but that was minor. His aura had screamed Negaverse. That was why she'd attacked him. Now, he told her she should join them, not because he thought she'd be happy there or because they could use her talents, but because she was a murderer.

He thought she belonged there.

It hit her like a punch in the stomach even though he still technically wasn't on the offensive. The fact that ther attack hadn't hit was the least of her worries."I made a mistake, it doesn't mean I'm a monster," she said, too quickly, her voice cracking at the end as if it wasn't obvious enough that she didn't believe herself. She forced herself to breathe.

"Order doesn't torture people or eat their souls." Simple facts were easy to say confidently. The words didn't really make her feel better, though. She kicked at his feet, only realizing a split second later that it probably wasn't helping her arguement.

"Doesn't it? You're attacking me just because you feel like it, not because you have to. You just justify everything you do, so it helps you sleep better at night. But if you choose to keep making the same mistakes, it doesn't really count as a mistake any more."

Merlinite was speaking more for himself than for her, though she was a convenient metaphor that he was all too happy to cling to.

"And order does torture people. Whether any of us have souls is debatable."

He didn't have it in him to attack her though, shaking his head and running a hand through his hair. He was miserable and so very confused. He hated what the Negaverse was, and what Chaos did to people. He hated seeing his future when he looked at Painite and realized that was not what he wanted to be. She was a monster, and she loved it. Was that because of who she was, or because of the Chaos that was in her? It was in him, too.

Maybe he didn't want it there any more.

"Chaos is just an easy way for us to get away with doing really terrible things. I don't want to do them any more, so what's my option? Join you guys? You don't seem to be any different, so what's the point?"

"I don't know."

She took a step back and slowly lowered her fists, although her eyes remained locked on him. There was a chance that it was a trick and he was going to attack now that she'd lowered her guard, just like there was a chance he'd rip a child's starseed the moment she turned away, but... there was also a chance that he wouldn't. Was the possibility that he might do something horrible a good enough reason to attack him, or was it just the kind of meaningless justification that he was talking about? She wasn't sure.

It seemed like, despite her best efforts, she couldn't dodge the moral questions anymore.

"I don't know how to stop making mistakes. I don't know much about purification, or how to get out of the Negaverse. I don't even know if I can trust you, because isn't that what you all would want us to think? That fighting, even for a good reason, is bad? Then you could do anything you wanted with no one to stop you."

There was a pause. Of course, she didn't know that she couldn't trust him either. She sighed, quietly.

"If you're serious about wanting to leave, though... well, in Order you can figure things out for yourself, and no one will punish you for not agreeing with them, " she finally added, hoping it was the right thing to say.

Merlinite folded his arms over his chest and looked away petulantly, unable to bring his eyes up to hers because he was afraid of what he might see. He shook his head slowly, but he had no intention of attacking her.

These thoughts really did bother him now, and they kept coming to him more and more. He had never said anything close to the idea of purifying out loud before, and though he did so now with some bitterness attached, it was actually a very real dilemma for him.

He hated what he was, and hated even more what he could potentially become. Seeing it in Painite terrified him.

Chaos would consume him, like it had her.

"I just don't know what will happen. Chaos you can't just... can't just decide to leave. It's a very serious thing, and if you get caught doing what I'm doing, just chatting with the likes of you guys, you can get yourself killed. Or worse. Forget I said anything, alright? Just. Forget this happened at all."

"Forget this happened? So, you want me to go back to trying to kill you?" The question was purely rhetorical. The edge had left Cybele's voice. She believed him, as much as you could believe someone in this war.

"You did talk to me, and you stopped me from doing something I would have regretted, from becoming more of a monster. I think you can do the same thing for yourself, if you want." She smiled weakly. It was a little hard to encourage someone you'd just punched in the face, but she was trying, despite the fact that she knew next to nothing about purification.

It was starting to sink in that he'd risked his life to talk to her and she had tried to kill him for it. She wanted to return the favor, but her usual encouragements didn't seem right for this, and she didn't trust him quite enough to let him drain her energy to show the Negaverse that they'd fought. Instead, she'd leave. She'd make sure he didn't get caught.

"My name is Cybele," she said, then curtsied, then fled.

It was really fun! Thank you!

Merlinite looked at her pathetically, shaking his head slowly but not even sure if he meant that either. Would a senshi just doing their job and getting rid of him be so bad? It certainly would help make his decisions a bit easier. But he didn't really want to be dead any more than he did steeped in Chaos, so he really needed to find a better option.

He listened to her, though, and motioned feebly with his hand that he was listening, giving her a slight nod of his head.

Cybele. He'd remember that one, in case he needed some help in this weird path he was suddenly finding himself on. Maybe this purification thing was a real option, and not just a pipe dream, but he could hardly know that yet. He needed to find out more, and think more.

And face his fears regarding Painite.

Letting her leave without going back on his words or actions so far, he waited until she was gone before he flopped down and looked up at the sky, not caring who came by and saw him at this point. He had no idea what he was going to do that night, let alone in the future. It all felt like too much.
