The filly had been out of the basket for just a short period of time. There was no one there to greet her, no one to care for her or give her a name. She didn't care. She didn't need anyone. Already she had a fierce determination to go it alone, to kill, eat and survive. Though she didn't know entirely what drove her to this decision, she decided to follow it. After all, she was hungry and the only one that would feed her was herself. Giving her body a shake the filly set out in search of a meal, a meal she knew deep down that she would need to hunt and kill.

She traveled for some time not seeing anything viable to eat. A few birds had passed overhead but there was no way to catch them unless they landed and she was quick enough. So the search for food would have to continue. The chill in the air was an odd comfort to the young foal. As she moved into a forest her pace slowed. Her ears swiveled listening for the sounds of movement other than her own. After a pause she heard something and followed the sound. She couldn't quite identify what it was, but it sounded like it could be fairly small and could perhaps be the meal she was searching for. Spotting a clearing up ahead she slowed even more, wanting to see what lay ahead before bursting forth. When her eyes fell upon a small foal she knew this would be a good opportunity to hunt. But before she could move an adult came over to the foal.

"You must not go so far away." The large male said to the foal.
"I was just playing." The foal stated.
"I know." The male said, giving the foal a nuzzle. "But the world is filled with dangers and we cannot protect you from them if you wander off like this."
"What kind of dangers?" The foal questioned.
The stallion paused for a bit before answering. "There are predators out there. Those that hunt others to eat, they do not eat the grass like you and I do. Now come, your mother will be worried." The stallion then led the foal away to safety.

The filly watched and listened, though the sickening display of affection gave her an unpleasant feeling she did not move. Much as she wanted to rush ahead and kill the foal, she knew that the larger Soquili would be an issue, and she would likely get injured or killed making such a mov at such a young age. Though the hunger was still present she had learned something important today. Not just that she had limitations in her hunting abilities at the moment, but she learned what she was. She was a predator, the thing that hunted and killed others. It was as good of a name as any she could pick herself, and so as the filly turned and walked off in search of another meal, she decided upon her own name. From now on, she would be called Predator.

As she followed the path that had led her here initially, a rat darted out among the trees. Predator instantly feel into motion and somewhat sloppily pounced on the fat morsel. A quick snap of her jaws filled the air with a crunch of bones and the first drops of blood flowed into her mouth. The meal was small but it was a start. Predator gobbled the rat down, enjoying the combination of snapping bones and squishing innards. With her first meal taken care of Predator moved on, there was more prey out there for her, but she knew she had to look for it, for it would not come running to her if she stood there with her mouth open looking hungry.

Hunting was not as easy as it looked. Predator had all the right instincts, but she lacked the practice to make each hunt successful. It frustrated her to no end that more often than not her quarry got away. But with each failure she also learned, her knowledge of hunting and how prey reacts grew. She still hated missing out on a meal because of being just a bit too slow, or moving right when she should have gone left. But she was also growing stronger. Chasing these delicious animals each day lent to stronger leg muscles and her stamina was improving too.

Finally after several failed attempts today she had secured a meal. The fox was small, but it would suffice for the time being. One of her favorite parts of a successful hunt was ripping apart the poor creature to get to the tender flesh below the skin. She loved the sound of the flesh being torn and bone breaking under her teeth. But most of all she enjoyed the taste of the blood and the full feeling that it gave her.

With her meal done, Predator licked away the blood that coated her legs and muzzle. All that remained of the fox was bones and a few bits of skin. She knew she would need to hunt again soon, but for now with a full belly she was willing to rest for a bit. Walking away from the corpse Predator sought out a place to rest. It did not take her long, this area was littered with places to hide - which could be used either to rest or stalk prey from. Finding a group of trees nearby the filly laid down, once she regained her strength she would be on the move again, looking for the next creature to bring down.

Over the next few weeks Predator's hunting skill increased greatly. She learned how to better stalk her prey, large or small, when the start the chase, using speed and surprise to her advantage. There were still failures, times when she came out of hiding too soon, or underestimated how quickly her prey could run. She ate good, she grew stronger, smarter. But there was something that she was missing. It had taken her some time to figure out what that was. It was something that seemed so obvious and strange. So far her life had consisted of traveling about looking for food and a place to rest until it was time to hunt down her next meal.

What she needed was a place to call her own...a territory. This was something her instincts told her that she needed. She could still travel as well, but having an area to claim as her own was important. It would be some time before she could actually gain and hold a territory, but it was something she was thinking about and considering. In her travels she would keep an eye out for a place to claim. But in the mean time, she needed to do what she had been doing, hunting, killing, consuming and moving on.

Predator moved through the forest, keeping her hooves light, trying to make as little noise as possible. It had been some time since her last meal and her stomach rumbled uncomfortably, reminding her that it was well beyond time to eat. The trees were beginning to thin and Predator slowed her feet, not wanting to frighten anything in the meadow ahead. She needed to eat, and a growl formed in her throat, one that she forced down.

Stopping at the edge of the trees, crouched down to make it harder for anything to spot her Predator's eyes scanned the landscape. Off in the distance was a deer, a young one. It would be an easy meal if she could get close enough. There was a lot of open space between her and the deer, but she had the advantage of of the deer being downwind and facing away from her at the moment. Slowly Predator slipped out into the grass and began forward. Already she could feel herself salivating at the prospect of a fresh kill, the blood flowing down her throat.

Slowly, all too slowly, Predator snuck up on the deer. It was still oblivious to her presence and she was nearly in range to spring in. A few more steps...and then the deer turned and looked at her. Damn. There was that moment, a split second when they looked into each others eyes, and then the deer was running, tail raised, racing towards the trees. Predator growled out a curse and took off after her quarry.
