Irronaghal danced and wove through the street that held a lovely market. Bright colors flashed by her, calling to her with their siren's song of luxery. But today she had a mission. She was in the market for a little protection, rumor was that the mighty Oban treasure was in this town, but this wouldn't be where she would hide it, no she would hide in Oba's capital city so that was where she would look. She was sad to be leaving the water behind here, and a certain other someone but she had come to Oba for a reason darn it, and she had to prove she was determined enough to acheive her goals no matter how hot the cities were. Besides she had all the creams she needed to keep her current skin on her body, she would roll in the stuff if she had too, sunburn sucked royally.

Dovev was learning much about the ways of money, namely that it was handy. He stalked through the market, pretending he was not dazzled by the abundance of beautiful things... things he wanted.
Beautiful things required money to buy. He earned money by doing things with his sword or by intimidating others. The money was an intermediary between the services. It was balanced, a beautiful system that he rather liked.
Except, he only had enough money from his last job for one thing, and one thing only. But what? New clothes, perhaps? A polish for his sword? A trophy or bauble, like some of the much older sellswords collected? Or something else... Supplies? He had already paid his rent, and he had plenty at his loft, but perhaps there was something else he needed to buy?
There was simply too much to choose. That was the beauty of money – it could buy so much, but it also was limited.
Dovev was musing on this fact – and very distinctly NOT on the heat of the desert city - when he felt the slight give of himself crashing into another body. He disentangled himself with ease and surveyed the situation: a strange earthling, odd of hair, skin, eyes and just about everything else was before him.
”Apologies.” he said in a flat voice, inclining his green-topped head, ”This one was not looking where he was going.” he studied her strange appearance for a moment, taking advantage of courtesy to satisfy curiousity.

"Oh its quite alright, probably mostly my fault, they have some fine items here and I was not looking where I was going either." She checked to make sure everything was well in order and ran her gaze over him to make sure she hadn't hurt him. "Its a bit crowded here, I'm used to more room in a market. Do you happen to know where soldiers can be hired? I'm in the market for a body guard as it happens. Hopefully they can keep me from being a bump hazard." She looked up at him her eyes crinkled with humor at her own expense. Tall, blue and handsome...were all the guys down here cute? That would be HER little secret...well she might tell her two girlfriends..but that was it. Anyway it was alright to admire the scenery surely. Maybe she would get a cute bodyguard too..perhaps that would be less wise then she would have to peel strange girls off. Maybe there would be a sturdy but not devastatingly handsome man available for hire. She shook her head at her fluffy, frivulous thoughts, before she could take her mission seriously she would have to start taking herself seriously. She was not a little girl anymore. Yes she would work on that.

More room? Oba was always crowded.
Since she seemed all right, Dovev would have nodded politely and moved on. But then she said something, in the course of conversation, that made him interested. He had just been thinking about money, had he not? He was of the opinion that opportunity would present itself if one was only patient, and in this case... he hadn't even begun to wait.
”Intriguingly enough.” he said, turning his full attention to her, very businesslike, ”This one is, in fact, a soldier for hire.” he bowed, ”This one's name is Dovev, and has been trained in the art of keeping another safe. There is...” He thought for a moment, ”A price involved, of course, but if you are in the market, this one is sure you can pay it, and it is also negotiable.”
Well. He was wasting no time.

Irro smiled at him. "Ahh it is most fortunate we have met then. What form of payment would you prefer goods or coin? I have both. I'm not sure how long service to me will detain you as I have to head to the capital for an unknown amount of time while I investigate my goal. I will of course include food and lodgings for us separate from your payment." It would be interesting to be in his company for longer, he had an interesting way of speaking, and she had not had a conversation with one of the water folk before. Living out here she kind of wished she was one, she was sure their skin could handle being submerged in water for a long time and that was where she never wanted to leave..pity it wouldn't do to drip with water in a market, people would stare...or rather stare more. In any case the confidence of having a guard would improve her efficiency greatly. She nodded her head respectfully at him.

Dovev contemplated for a moment. ”Although it would be best to discuss this in a more suitable place...” he said, ”This one sees that your need is urgent.” his eye caught a glint from a weapon stall, far out of his budget indeed... however... ”So. Here is the deal.” he said, ”This one will buy a new sword, and you will front the remainder of the price.” Dovev would negotiate, of course, but he did want a good sword, and here was an opportunity to have both goods and currency. And more besides, for what good was a sellsword with a second-rate sword? ”You do this, and this one is yours for the entirety of the day, and possibly longer once we have a chance to negotiate properly.” he tilted his head, curiously. ”Do we have a deal?”

"Your offer is more then fair, as the sword itself may be used in my protection, then it is most practical for me to invest in one for you. Thank you for agreeing to do this, it is most helpful." She indicated they should wander over to the weaponsmith. "I don't think I have enough to cover the more ornate ones, but those are predominantly for show anyway, choose what you like and I'll cover the cost." This was an excellent deal. The capital intimadated her somewhat in a way that Jatine did not, was it because she was that much closer to her goal, or was she being a bit superstitious? She looked over the weapons herself, they were not her specialty, she prefered comfort over uncomfort and weapons were definitely uncomfortable looking, still she should at least get a small knife. "Er, could you recommend a small defense type blade?" She asked her new guard. He was bound to know much more then she about such things.

Dovev selected a good sword – simply wrought but keen edged, well made, and also within his extended budget. He prepared to haggle down the price and purchase it – along with a new scabbard because they simply went together. It was not the best sword on sale, and one day, he would afford better, but for now... this blade would serve him well.
He turned to his companion at her question. ”Hmm?” he frowned, looking her over thoughtfully before inspecting the racks of weapons again. ”A small defensive blade...” his yellow eyes scanned the small knives offered. Finally, he picked one out – it was good to be able to defend oneself, even when one had a bodyguard. It made a guard's job a lot easier, and more likely to be paid, or so he'd heard. Or less in demand, of course, but he was getting a sword out of this: he figured he'd help her as part of their contract.
”This.” he handed it to her to inspect, ”This one thinks that such a weapon would be suitable for you.” he commented, his expression bland as his gaze raked over the other items – the quality whetstones and oils, the various knives and hilts and decorations. One day, he could afford them.
But for now, he went to the shopkeeper....

Irro inspected the blade, yes it was exactly what she wanted. She trailed after him to the proprieter and started to haggle with him, showing him some of the goods she had for sale but not all of them, it was always smart to keep one or two special items back, that way if the initial items were not interesting enough she had something in reserve. The price was whittled to an acceptable place and she handed the required items over. "There all set." She tucked the blade into her skirt. She procured water and supplies as well. "Now then off to the capital." The desert yawned before them and she wondered how she had survived on her own out there before. At least now she had company. "I would say the capital is about a medium distance away, what do you think Dovev?" She was curious about him, but didn't want to push, they could talk later. She hoped that he wanted to be a body guard and that she hadn't encouraged him to fulfill the former wishes of his slaver...if he had one before..she really didn't know.

Dovev watched with interest as she paid for their weapons in goods – a very good strategy, but one subject to to changes in prices. After all, one person might find a good worth more than another would.
Still, it worked, and soon Dovev had a proper sword to sell. He traded in his old training sword – having no sentimental value attached to the old, dented thing, and some coin to cover the difference.
It was like he was truly free from his old life, then, an interesting feeling.
He turned to Irro and inclined his head – clearly she was used to travelling, and he watched her purchases carefully, noting it for later and comparing it to what he knew. ”Yes.” he said, ”This one would say so.” he nodded slowly, ”What you have should be more than enough,” he observed, ”which is as it should be.”
He looked at her thoughtfully. ”However, we should discuss more formal and long term arrangements. This one accompanied you through the market, and it is understood that you wish this one to accompany you through the desert?” he regarded her neutrally, ”This one offers his services, of course, but there is a matter of compensation required.” he said, adding, ”Discounted, of course.” The purchase of the sword had, essentially, given her some standing credit with him, having been far more than his current service had been worth.

"Yes Dovev, I would like to hire you to take me to the capital and back, it should not take more then a day or two to get what I want. Oh, oh of course, what is the price you deem fair for what I require?" She was proud of herself somewhat, it was nice to be able to handle ones own buisness without one's family or village peering over ones shoulders. She could liquify what she needed and give him his pay as he earned it. It would also be nice to sup with someone, it was boring eating alone. Soon enough she would lay eyes on the treasure complete her self impossed mission and perhaps head back to Tale, with a few goods from Oba. She wondered if Matori was open for adventure or if that would be to dangerous. "What is Matori like? I'm sorry for the subject change but I understand it is quite beautiful down there, is it very far?"

Dovev worked out what he thought was a fair deal with the strangely-patterned foreigner, bargaining until it was just right, perfect for them both. Dovev was pleased with this – it was good to have a job, and it seemed that luck had been on his side. It seemed that luck was further on his side, however, in that he might have found a repeat customer, if her questions were any indicator.
”This one would not know. He has never been to Matori.” Dovev said. It wasn't precicely true – he had been to Matori. Technically, he had been born there... but that was about all he knew of it. ”It is several days journey West, this one estimates, through the desert. Further, if we travel from the capital.” he said, ”This one would need a well-drawn map, and it would require many supplies.”

Irro gave him the initial payment at a price that let her know he was a very fair person, she was also satisfied. "I believe I would like to come back here for a while after our trip to the capital, I'm hesitant to head to Matori from the capital it just doesn't feel as safe, but in the future I would like to see it. Is there a good way to contact you once we have parted ways, in case I need your services again?" It would be important to have a way of finding her companion later especially if she were to travel to an unknown area like Matori. She yearned to see it, from its descriptions it was a haven, a paradise full of water and wonderful beaches. "Stopping here would also give me time to gather all those supplies you mentioned." She paused for a bit, is there any information you have on the capital that will help keep us both safe?"

A way to contact him... hmm... ”We will arrange some reliable means of contact, before we part.” he said, thoughtful. It was a complicated problem best solved personally. It was, after all, a wholly different landscape from city to city.
He nodded. ”Yes, it is likely that you will find the supplies you seek there, and stopping here on the way back would grant another opportunity to restock.” he leaned back, ”As for advice... This one would advise to be careful with the upper class. They still think in terms of master and slave.” That was a problem, but Dovev knew it was unavoidable. Freedom did not mean that old, convenient ideas were dead.
”As for other advice, this one thinks that, perhaps, you – being a seasoned traveler – know of any other pieces of advice this one would wish to give.”

"Mmm thats a good point, I don't think I have met very many of the nobility." She would do her best to be more wary of them in the future. "Looks like we are all set then Dovev. I look forward to our adventures." She was so excited she could hardly contain it. "Let me just go grabs some food and water and we can be off." She bought the nessessary items with no fuss and packed them in a sack that would fit nicely between her shoulder blades well balanced and she could barely feel it. It would be best if she carried it, she wasn't responsible for their defense. "Ready?"
