Business as usual, again...well, except there was one thing that had made her attitude better...but it was still business as usual. Training. Never not training. Claude had her pistol summoned once again, and was tapping the barrel of it into her open palm, looking for anyone to spar with. It was incredibly scarce today though, like the majority of hunters had gone on holiday or something. Hm.

Her eyes scanned the pretty empty field until--

Wait.

Someone was coming...He seemed to be cutting across the field. Wait, Claude recognized him.

"Hey." She called out to the hunter. "You're that kid who claimed to be seventeen." Yeah. She was still a bit skeptical about that. She moved to intercept him, and as she quickly drew closer to him, a brow quirked, her eyes immediately roaming his face with the new scar.

She almost impulsively asked what happened, but held it. Damn. She was becoming too inquisitive since she got to Deus. She'd wait and ask. Possibly. Instead she asked...wait, demanded: "Spar me."

Oliver had his notebook out in front of him, going over recent lab notes, and froze when he realized he was being addressed. Slowly he looked up, nervously, and then the notebook was quickly shoved into a pocket inside his coat.

"Um, e-eighteen now," he said shakily, recognizing the other hunter from that mission meeting. Blunt and intimidating, he could at least accept that she was friends of his friends... sort of, and that meant he didn't have to be too afraid. Except he was, because Claude was asking him to spar, and that was always a frightening thing.

He looked away nervously, scratching the bridge of his nose where the scar crossed it. "Uh, I shouldn't... um, r-right now... work... and stuff..."

Yet one hesitant glance at her face was enough to convince him there would be no getting out of this one.

Eyes narrowed a bit at the boy. Eighteen. She was definitely not buying it. "Mm." Was the only response Claude gave in response to that, and it sounded like a very skeptical small sound.

It was true. There was nothing in her poker face that said he was walking away without sparring. His softly worded excuse wasn't even acknowledged. Instead the taller hunter took some steps back from Oliver in preparation and raised her pistol, waiting. "What's your name?"

Oliver wilted slightly under the look. She still didn't believe him, but it's not like he was just carrying around a copy of his personnel files to confirm his date of birth. Besides, from what he saw it was rare to recruit kids younger than himself when he was woken up, so he didn't quite understand Claude's skepticism.

Wilting had apparently been the most appropriate response, the way the tall woman demanded his name and raised her weapon felt more like an execution than a sparring match.

"Oliver, um... O-Oliver Keeley," he stammered, willing the tooth necklace into it's large axe form. Sometimes he was still surprised by the larger, more ornate form Jökul had taken, but today he was more worried about that pistol. Dodging bullets was only a sci-fi movie sort of thing.

I forgot, do you want a handicap, or should Oliver use Intermediate dice?

It was also quite possible Claude didn't want to grasp that this kid was two years younger than her. Very possible. To her, he looked like he was fourteen. Even with that scar across his nose.

She gave a small nod of her head. "Oliver." She repeated. "I'm Claude." Last names weren't that important to her, so she skipped out on giving hers. She eyed his weapon with some interest, and now that it was out, it was game on. She fired off a shot at the boy, and then got ready to move for when he'd come after her.

"How long have you been here for?"

Oliver yelped as she aimed and fired as calmly as a walk in the park. He should have been prepared, that one hurt!

"I-I don't remember," he stammered, "I-it's hard to tell, um, seasons here, but... uh, almost a year... maybe?" It was always going to be hard to remember dates and whatnot when there was a gun pointed at him. But at least he had a name now, something that counted as a formal introduction.

She seemed to be waiting for his move, and as timid as he was, Oliver knew he couldn't just stand there and get shot at. He leapt forward, using that forward momentum to power the axe into a mighty swing.

Claude nodded her head thoughtfully. A year, huh? To think this kid had been here that long. According to America, that was something of a veteran status. The trainee knew she was up against an intermediate, but it still came as something of a surprise to see the other timid hunter lay down a powerful hit.

The trainee staggered as she was hit, and continued to try and move out of his range, shooting back at him as she did so. After a moment she decided to ask the question she had wanted to before hand. "How'd you get that scar?"

How was he supposed to avoid those attacks? Claude's composure had apparently made her a good shot. But Oliver took the hit to his left ribs and didn't flinch, letting his axe continue it's swing. He brought it over his head in a whistling downward slash that was not quite on target. Clearly he needed to learn from his opponent's more precise aim.

Oliver jumped back, or was pulled back by the force of his axe's momentum and managed a quick recovery. "I.. um..." He was in trouble, there was no time for looking away and avoiding the question. The boy's jaw clenched for a second, while the look in his eyes was more haunted and vulnerable.

Might as well just make it quick and get it over with. "Famine clan... uh, I-I had to keep a horseman away from our wounded..."

That last attack only clipped her, and Claude was pleased with herself that she was, possibly, getting better at this evading thing. Her eyes stayed on Oliver, first and foremost to keep track of his weapon, but also because he was talking. It was easy to pick up on the reluctance that went beyond the timid nature she'd soon so far. All the scars here had rather tragic stories apparently.

To hear that Oliver had a run in with the Horseman though had surprised her. She, personally, hadn't encountered any, but she heard plenty about the horrors of them from other Hunters, especially the Famine clan. "Ah." She uttered in acknowledgement. Hm. It was kind of hard to fathom such a young, rather naive kid going up against something as evil as that...

She had that thought while she shot him again.

Oliver winced when the bullet hit home, without the weapon's bond he would surely have had half his organs punctured by now. But again that axe didn't slow down, or lose momentum.

He accepted her surprise, and had he been able to read her mind, Oliver would have agreed with her. It was a ridiculous thought. He had no business going on missions that were as difficult as that, and his ability to perform his duty out there still baffled him. The boy no longer believed he was on the island to die, not when he had survived this long, but neither did he believe he could be as effective ever again. It had been a fluke, as far as he was concerned.

As the axe swung around for another blow, there was a mechanical click. Claude would find herself the target of a long, cutting slice with what looked like a one-sided greatsword.

Then Oliver gave Claude something new to ponder. She heard the click, and then watched as his weapon transform. It was then her poker face gave way to a genuinely surprised look, although it was brief, as she resumed her focus on her movements. She couldn't dodge the strike of the sword, but after she didn't skip a beat in returning fire on the trainee.

"How did you do that?" To this date, she'd never seen a hunter's weapon transform.

This time he didn't flinch when Claude's attack hit, without a pause he stepped forward once more and pressed the attack with another slash. The sword's attack was faster, it's weight centered closer to Oliver's hand. He knew what the downside of this form was though. Since there was less momentum being generated, it took more muscle to wield. He would get tired quickly if he kept it up.

"It's um, spring loaded or something, I think," came the boy's reply, but he too distracted to elaborate on the topic. Staying close meant the possibility of being shot at point-blank range, but at least he could press his own attack.

Spring loaded. A spring loaded weapon? Interesting. She was brought back to the discussion Abbi gave her about her own pistol though...weapons that operated a bit out of the 'norm'. Still...Oliver's was by far the most interesting. The boy landed another powerful hit, and Claude stumbled as she moved away from him.

She fired, but the stumble made her shot miss him entirely.

Oliver could feel the heavy weapon taking it's toll on his arms as he swung again. It was not as direct a slash as his first, not when Claude was stumbling backwards in a more unpredictable manner. Still he stepped forward, intending on pushing the attack as long as he could.

Unlike at the beginning of the match, his expression was of calm concentration. Without the fright showing on his face it was possible to imagine him as a fighter worth challenging.

She could feeling her shield weakening, but that wasn't a surprise. She'd take this match all the way until it was down. What was something of a surprise though, was the skill Oliver was showing. It was a complete 180 from the boy she had more or less cornered on the field earlier. Maybe it was something of a testament to why he made it out of the horsemen clutches with only a scar.

The trainee continued to try and keep out of his range, and fired another shot.
