So I've been meaning to create a fun thread to more or so share our favorite things from the Fire Emblem series. I talked about it last time for those that posted in my previous thread, though I've kinda been a little busy with stuff. Better late than never right?

Just wanna throw down a few things before we begin:

- Obviously bias is going to be ivery much invovled here which is kind of why I was a little iffy about it (Especially with canons, OTPs, pairings,or even cracked pairings.(If you have any or whatnot that is fine)

- This won't be a weekly thing like the past discussion threads like Best/Worst or Character Analysis. I know people are busy with life now(Even I'm guilty of that right now) Topics will be updated whenever I feel like we're ready to move on.

- You don't need to be too detailed with your answers. That is unless you really want to which is totally cool with me!

All I ask is for everyone to be respectful of each other's opinion and choices. Everyone has their own tastes and opinions which may differ from yours and that's kinda entire the point of this whole thread.I'd like to make this fun if all possbile and I really would rather not being provoked. If I see anyone taking things WAY out of hand, they're getting some boots to the head. Just try and keep it at a sane level guys. xp

So I guess I'll be the first one to post. My thoughts have changed here and there with Lords in the Fire Emblem series.

So far this is the conclusion I came with up in the end Keep in mind that these are the ones I personally feel stood out to me the most. I'll talk a little more about them later on so for now:

1. Leaf/Leif
2. Ike
3. Ephraim
4. Eliwood
5. Hector
6. Marth
7. Celice/Seliph
8. Lyn
9. Chrom
10. Sigurd

Alright, guess I'll jump in now, too. Since I finally remembered to log in. Top ten Lords, huh? Alright.

Ike
Marth
Leif/Leaf
Ephraim
Eliwood
Eirika
Chrom
Lyn
Sigurd
Lucina

Leif in third because as I've not played Thracia yet and It'd be very uber biased of me to place him in first until then. Lucina in last for reasons being that I adore her as a Lord and think she's good, but at the same time, there's so much I could say that detracts from my favoring her any higher. And good ol' Eliwood in the middle. xD;; Emblem sandwich, anyone? -shot- I really don't think I could properly say why I rate these the way I have, a lot of it is impression and the impact they left on me personally while the other part is their characterization and to a minor extent, aesthetics. xDDD

My top 10 favorite Lords? Well, let's see...

1. Eliwood
2. Hector
3. Ephraim
4. Marth
5. Lyn
6. Ike
7. Chrom
8. Eirika
9. Roy
10. Miciah

Alright, guys. Those of you who know me know one thing: I adore Eliwood. I don't know why, but there is something about his personality that I like. I guess it's his sense of chivalry toward both his allies and enemies. I admire that a lot.

Lyn's in the middle as she is my favorite female Lord, but Marth left a good impression on me when I finally played Shadow Dragon, Ephraim was just very BAMF, and then Hector was amazing in terms of power and characterization.

Chrom is lower on the list because he's still new to me, but I do like him so far.

Roy and Miciach are low because I feel like the other lords outclass them as units. Roy at least shines with his supports though and FE 6's plot was less of a hot mess than FE 10's.

Interesting list guys.

I actually put Leaf on top mostly because I feel he's written very well. Also, Shinon you'll soon begin to understand once you play FE5 fully that there's a reason why Leaf is so good. Opinions may vary from person to person but I really like Leaf a lot as a character. The reason why I put Leaf as my number #1 favorite lord is because of the way he grows.(Plus he has an excellent design) I mean, even judging from the opening cinemtaics and that amazing brass music in the background. The entire freaking Thracia Army is after Leaf even as an infant he sees his entire kingdom burning in flames.

ke is my 2nd favorite lord. I think he's a great character in FE9. Actually both him and Leaf do share lots of similarities. He interacts with every character connected to the story. The only minor nitpick I have with Ike is the scene with Sanaki. I understand that his heart was in the right place, but speaking against an important person who has a higher title was very dumb. if Sanaki didn't do anything about it Ike could've been executed right on the spot

You could probably argue that this was part of his development? Which I can understand.. Aside from that his character is still done very well. I love that he interacts with every single character he meets. Even the ones that aren't all that important they have a say in the army. Ike wants to become stronger and protect his friends and family. He's a bit of a brute, and kind of childish sometimes but he listens and understands people. It's the bonds he forges through friendship that makes him a strong character. Once he's taken command of the greil mercenaries, Ike still manages to give it his all. Not very easy at first since what happens to his father... It was hard to deal with. But he learns the ropes eventually. and takes the responbilites of being the new commander. RD Ike not so much though he's not to blame since the writers barely gave the Greil Mercenaries any depth as characters they once had before. There's a few good scenes here and there but that's it really. Ike is ripped in RD seriously.

Ephraim is third because I like the idea of a strong king. But Ephraim is carefree and doesn't care much for ruling a kingdom and he's more of a fighter than anything. Heck, I remember he mentioned that he'd rather travel the world as a mercenarry. But that's wht I like about Ephraim because he begins to understand the importance of becoming a ruler of Renais. Plus, he's overpowered as heck as a unit. But he has great characterization and the scenes with Lyon

Some fans actually don't like Eliwood. And I never got the reason why. But I've always liked him and found him to be very underrated. He's kindhearted, compassionate, modest and very likable. He has some very powerful scenes like the one where his father Lord Ebert dies in front of him. And when Ninian is slain by his hand later in the game. And the ending is still a tear jerker to me. He's number 4 for me.

I like Eliwood more than Hector but he's great too. Strong, brash, reckless, and reliable prince. One of my favorite scenes is the one with Oswin and Hector in his story mode. He kept the death of Hector's brother Uther a secret from him and the way the scene is handled is done very clever. But he does grow and learn responsiblity for his kingdom in time.

I still like Marth in Shadow Dragon and in FE12. He's definitely my 6th favorite lord. I'm not really a big fan of Marth's portrayal in the fan translation of the original games. The localization team really captured Marth very well. He's the childish prince but also very idealistic. He really has some great scenes with Jeigan in Book 2 as well.

Now for Celice/ or Seliph as some may call him... I'm not a big fan of him and there's probably fans that like him. But I think he had promise and the scenes between him and Levin are really good. Even though, the translations for some of big lipped aligator moments were poorly handed.

And heck, I think the scenes between him and Julia were cute I guess. The extra scene before he fights Alvis I do like. So he's number 7.

I placed Lyn in number eight since I think out of the female lords she stands out the most for me. Even though, there are some things I don't like about her. She's a strong female lord and there's not that many of them. I also, like the fact that she's a tribeswoman The scene with the Marquess in Araphen really defines her heritage of who she is and why she's so proud to be part of the Lorca tribe.

Chrom is number 9 because I only like one scene with him. And that's when he's angry. He's a nice guy sure, but I don't find him all that interesting. There's some comedic moments with him here and there. But that's kinda it...

And at last Sigurd is my least favorite lord. Ironically in the past, I used to like him a lot. He's still an amazing unit in FE4. But I realized that what made him interesting is the end of Generation I. How he's involved in the plot is more interesting rather than him as a character. The romance between Dierdre and Sigurd is pretty rushed and we're xpected to accept that they're a couple. Sure, Sigurd cares for the people and he's a nice guy and he does suffer tragically. But there's not really much to him as an actual character. I like the friendship between Sigurd, Eltosian(Good ol Eldy bby), and Cuan. It would've been cool to explore that some more.

Sort of copypastaing part of this from my Skype convo with Sue.

[4:46:34 PM] Mandi: It really was a tossup between Ike and Marth getting first
[4:47:24 PM] Amy Lynn: o:
[4:48:08 PM] Mandi: but because FE9 was the first FE game I truly played all the way through, beat, and adored and the impression and impact Ike's characterization made on me first so strongly, I had to give it to him. Marth is pretty tied though because I simply adore his outlook, too, the impact he made on me as well, all the crap he went through so young, came back and set it right, and in many ways, was rewarded by fate for it (Ie, his sister being alive and reuniting, ect)

That at least explains why Ike and Marth are my top 1 and 2.

And I've read game scripts and stuff, Rhys. I also saw the opening cinematic for Thracia and played the first map, I really adore Leif. I adore him to pieces, but since reading a gamescript doesn't define everything going on in the game, such as the scenery or true mood of the dialogue, ect, I want to experience it first hand. As I said, my putting Leif first for what few/little things I do know of Thracia, it would be an extremely biased move on my part and I'm trying to refrain from jumping the proverbial gun.

Ephraim is just... Well, Ephraim. Brash, hotheaded, but an excellent character overall. I have a hard time putting into words exactly what draws me towards him besides his aesthetic and BAMF stats... I relate alot to him in a way, I suppose. (Can you all tell I'm struggling to remain coherent and sound intelligent when my ADD and brain is trying to be all "OOER SHINY LET'S DERAIL FROM TOPIC"?) He's got a weight on his shoulders to be one thing, expected to lead and all of these things when he doesn't feel he's up to the task, but grows to accept and learn what truly is needed of him. He doesn't show hardly any of his true grief or anger over the events that happened, but you feel it in some of his words. That, and he's a cool brother to Eirika (I mildly wish my brothers were half as understanding as Ephraim -shot-)

And now middle-of-the-roading it with Eliwood.

Eliwood is in the middle because while I like him, at the same time, he does have his blandness. I admire and like his kindness, his resilience and can relate to the grief and pain he goes through on a semi-personal level and still resolves to walk the path set before him where he was given the choice to turn back. I mean, point in case here, I really felt him shine when the Sage dude (Forgive my lack of memory and names) asks him, Lyn, and Hector if they're still willing to travel down the path before them and how Eliwood responds. I'm sure the other option ran through his mind, and possibly even appealed to him. Return home, stay with his mother, live out however short peace he has left, but he knows that it wouldn't stay that way and so chooses to step up and finish what began. But in terms of everything else, meh, I think his personality is rather bland and normal outside of anything relating to the storyline and all that, with the exception of his supports with Hector. And Fiora, I think? He really shows his concern and care to all of his supports nearly but I guess I'm partial to breaking the norm of Eliwood/Ninian or Eliwood/Lyn with Fiora... Of course, I am very biased and have my own OTP with a unit he can't support, but wish he could. I also really liked his support with Harken. But yes. That's why Eliwood is dead center. Neither OMGFAVE, or OMGSUCK.

Eirika comes next.

Granted, I love her aesthetic and a lot of her characterization to pieces, there's still parts I just can't look past to let her climb higher on my list. Her optimism, her dreams. Sure, she's naive and sheltered, I can understand that. That's not really a detract for her imo. What really rubs me wrong, I suppose, is her mindset even to the end is that she thinks she can really "save everyone". Until she realizes she can't save Lyon. I think the endgame scenario of it was portrayed poorly, and while I know she does indeed come to the grim reality that she must destroy Lyon's body and all, I think how she transitioned into it was done wrong. To be harshly slapped in the face and suddenly see that no matter what you thought or believed, it's not possible to save everyone, it's not an easy thing to swallow and to be honest, I feel it would have stunted/stagnated her in character for a moment, I would have much preferred the endgame chapter to start with her paralyzed with the shock and stuff for a few turns unable to move/be played with mini-dialogue at the interval of the end turns where she's sorting herself out and the people important to her help snap her out of it before she finally rejoins the battle with the determination that, even if she can't save Lyon physically, the most she can do is grant him what relief she can by destroying his body so the Demon King cannot run rampant. But other than that, I really do adore her...

Chrom's next.

I can't really find reasons one way or another to explain why I like and dislike him, he's a pretty normal, general dude in personality. He steps up when he has to, but in the run of it, fate was thrown on him and he deals with is while trying to remain/stay himself. Emmeryn's sacrifice rattled the crap out of him, but it didn't stop him from doing what he knew he had to. I admire his strength for that, and I really like just in general how easy-going he is with all of his group and does his best to be a good leader. He's got flaws, he's kind of boring in some regard, but I still like him.

Lyn's up now.

I really like her as a Lord, she's strong, fair more or less in her judgment save a few times she's hostile for the wrong reason, proud, and I like the fact she is a plainswoman. I also like, to an extent, her support with Eliwood in the fact she asks him to help her become a better lady for court and all, even though they get all awkward derp-like about parts of it. I like the fact she really does care for her grandfather and is doing her best to try and learn the proverbial royal ropes as it were to do her best and uphold both her honor as well as show the world even if she 'is' a Lorca, she can be a good Lord. I honestly can't find a reasonable or conscious thought to tell you why she's low on my list other than just an "instinctive, gut feeling", she didn't leave as big of an impression on me when I played FE7, even with all those merits I said. That's about as good as I can say.

Now, Sigurd.

I agree with what you've said, Rhys. It is rushed, his marriage and stuff to Deirdre, and he doesn't have much character on his own, and I totally agree about wishing for more expansion on the trio of Sigurd, Eltshan, and Cuan. He is a BAMF in stats and all, and since I've not gotten too far and all, I guess what I really liked and what impacted me about him was simply the prologue chapter when Aideen's taken and though he knows the kingdom's lacking any real force, he resolves to go save/help her. I know, cliche, but like... I may have an aversion to most of the white knight types, but there was just something in his words about it, he acknowledged they weren't really in a state to go galavanting about, and tells the others to stay while he goes, he earned points in my book from that. Not just for the martyr/heroic thing about it, but because he was trying to be responsible about it while moralistic? Idk. Maybe that's not the word I'm looking for... Meh. Anyway, yes, that's why.

And finally, Lucina.

Where to begin...

I really think she's BAMF, and depending on her mother, can be even more so. That aside, she's pretty bland in personality. What impacts me is the force and strength of her care for everyone. Yes, it screams to you in the fact she wants to save her father the most, but in nearly all of her supports, you see how much she cares about them, too. She doesn't want this timeline of Ylisse to go through the turmoil and grief and sadness her future did, she doesn't want to see people dying and suffering, it's a hard burden she's had to shoulder for herself from her future, and you can feel and see that in the depths of some of her words. Again, it's just an instinctive thing that makes me put her at the bottom, she didn't impact me as much, either. She has her merits, I admire her strength and convictions, she's a good unit, but she just doesn't drive it home to me. -shrug-

So there you are. My best "in-depth" reasons as I can get. God, that hurt my brain trying to stay on topic and find words to describe my feelings/thoughts... Hope this gives you some insight on my preferences.

Since everyone is doing it (and I want to), I guess I'll go a bit more in-depth with my choices/list.

As I've stated in my previous post, Eliwood is always going to be my favorite Lord. FE 7 itself is the first FE game that I've ever played, and it's going to have that special place in my heart. I like Eliwood's overall personality and resolve. While some may call him bland, I like his mellow temper, and also his overall attitude toward his support partners. I'm also drawn to redheads, so he's a bit aesthetically pleasing to me as well.

Hector's turn!
Hector is only in second place because I happen to love Eliwood so much. But Hector is pretty rad on his own. He's a powerful unit, a loving brother toward Uther (you could just tell how close they were pre-game and stuff) and a good friend to Eliwood. Like, his supports show how yes, he can be brash, reckless and a bit bloodthirsty (like, with how he axed that soldier at the beginning to get to Eliwood), but that's just his way of showing his care for the other characters. ^^

Now for Ephraim!
Ephraim made a pretty good first impression on me. I liked the fact that he used a spear. I dunno why, but it's an aesthetic thing for me -- I like spears more than swords. I also liked his attitude from the very beginning. "Let's besiege this fortress, what harm could it do for us? 8D" His "Lord Weapon" is very useful, and then when he promotes he gets the horse utility and that makes him even more awesome on the battlefield. I like how Ephraim cares for his followers too, like, I can just tell that he sees Forde and Kyle as true friends and comrades, and not just knights who serve him. His derp rivalry with Innes is the best, and I also like his devotion to his sister, Eirika.

As for Marth...
Marth. His is an interesting case for me. I first knew him from the Super Smash series, and I pictured him as a cold, calculating tactician who appeared to be standoffish. I actually played Shadow Dragon and found out that he was a pretty nice guy in spite of all the things that happened to him when he was young. His sheer determination to fight and win back his homeland is what made me admire him. Also, he turns out to be a BAMF unit in his own game. Sure, he uses swords, but he gets the Falchion, which is unlimited and will wreck endgame. I personally like the pairing of him and Sheeda/Caeda too, because I can just imagine how these two grew to trust one another when he spent time on her island.

Now for Lyn!
As I mentioned in my previous post, Lyn is in the exact middle because... although I like her, there are simply qualities about the other Lords that I like more. I really like the sort of honest parts of Lyn's personality. She's a devoted friend to Florina and the rest of her Legion, and grows close to Hector and Eliwood in a way that seems plausible to me. Her promotion is pretty rad, as she gains the use of bows and becomes a force to be reckoned with later on. Her Mani Katti makes her a critmaster almost on par with any swordmaster in the game too.

Ike's turn!
I like Ike, actually. I do like him a lot, but like Lyn, I just felt like the others' qualities put them above him. I like his supports with the other Greil Mercenaries, and also how he comes to even understand the Laguz after years of bigotry and misunderstanding between them and the beorc. Ike is a hero who earned the respect of many, and he did it in a way that was honest rather than underhanded. He's a good guy, over all. And do I have to mention how broken of a unit he is? His Aether skill is one of the biggest game-breakers in the series IMO. After he promotes, he could be a one man army.

Chrom's Next!
Now, I'm going to admit that I'm biased with this one. I've just acquired Awakening, so that means I haven't seen all there is to see about Chrom just yet. What I've seen so far though? I am beginning to like. He's got a good relationship with both his sisters, he's a true friend and confidant to your Avatar, and he is a good leader to the Shepherds. And of course, he's an awesome unit. Just like Marth he wields the Falchion, and after he's gained just a few levels he can pretty much stand on his own. Paired up with other units (especially the MU/Avatar) he's unstoppable!

Moving onto Eirika.
At first, I wasn't the biggest fan of Eirika. But after replaying Sacred Stones and paying attention to the story, I actually changed my opinion. In the early part of the story we see her concern for the people of Renais as well as her personal subjects like Franz and Seth. And then when she reunites with Ephraim, we see her flashbacks with him as well as Lyon. She is a good person, and pure of heart. She is a bit naive, but that's even used in the story as a flaw/something that gets her in trouble, in the beginning. As Shinon mentioned, that'd be cool if she were to go through the grieving process with Lyon. Perhaps that is something that can be explored with fanworks. As a unit, she's definitely top-notch, but the again, your units in Sacred Stones are generally good. She has the Rapier and then the Sacred Twin relic later on (I forget what it's called), making her an asset even if you choose Ephraim's route.

It's Roy's turn now!
I really wish Roy was better, overall. He's still up here on this list, but I think he could have had more to his personality than just leading the army against Zephiel's forces. I do like his relationships with his supports, but it takes a lot of effort in FE 6 to get them. He is the son of Eliwood though, so he's got that same aesthetic that pleases me. (And I wish this game would have showed more about his relationship with his father.) As a unit, he definitely could have been better. His Luck growths are usually decent, so at least there's that. The Sword of Seals is also pretty helpful. It's a 1-2 ranged weapon that can also heal Roy, interestingly enough.

Last (and least), Micaiah.
Gosh, I don't even know if I'm spelling her name right. Last on my list for a lot of reasons, but let's try and focus on the positives. She's a mage lord, wields light magic, and can use staffs later on! Also, her costume/outfit changes as she promotes? They're actually pretty cool. There are a lot of narrative fumbles in her characterization, but at least part of it's explained by her having a Goddess on her side.

Let's see... top ten lords. This actually became a list of all the lords I've played in FE games since I haven't played any earlier than FE6. Some of these have explanations, while I may add explanations for others later. (Also, a lot of these placements have to do with how much of an impact the entire game had on me, since the lord of a game can really make or break an FE game.)

1.) Elincia
The amount of growth she does over the course of FE9 and FE10 is just amazing. Plus, I love character arcs that involve growing without a loss of kindness.

2.) Ike
FE10 was my first game ever, and thus Ike has a special place in my heart. Also, only lord I've played as who wasn't actually royal/nobility.

3.) Lyn

4.) Eirika

5.) Hector

6.) Eliwood

7.) Ephraim

8.) Chrom

9.) Marth

10.) Micaiah
She seems like a Mary Sue to me. Heck, on certain tests, she is a Mary Sue. I just don't quite like how she's basically handed power, only to accept it after first declining it politely. It just... bothers me.
PostPosted: Sun Jan 25, 2015 11:26 pm

Rath is right Sue, you gotta respect your mom! emotion_dealwithit

Also, glad to see you here Mordecai! Your choices are very interesting... With Eirika placed higher up than Ephraim I'm very curious about that.

And with the Micaiah being a Mary-Sue thing, I'm not going to point fingers here because that just leads to more arguments and I'd rather not do that. As I explained Iabove, want this to be a fun, laid back thread.

But I really feel like this needs to be pointed out. I personally don't like that term "Mary Sue" Someone in the Fire Emblem fandom started this whole Micaiah is a Mary-Sue years back. And it seems a lot of people in the Fire Emblem community decided to follow along and hate and bash Micaiah. Don't get me wrong, I may not be the biggest fan of FE10 but I've grown up and learned to accept its shares of problems. Micaiah does have her issues too but, I feel it's more of a disappointment of what the writers of RD failed to do with her. Micky could've been interesting but no they just decided to be lazy.

Now, let's take a second and really think about exactly is a Mary Sue? From my understanding it's a character who's perfect in every conceivable way. no flaws whatsoever. If we're using that term which I think is really dumb to define a character based on that definition alone. Micaiah isn't a Mary Sue because she isn't even perfect. She makes plenty of mistakes in Radiant Dawn.

Remember when she always criticized Izuka's cowardly tactics? Don't get me wrong, the things she said was justified. Izuka was an awful man but Micaiah isn't much better off And it's all still very contradictory and hypocritical of what she does. Micaiah was supposed to be a priestess, or rather savior to help the people of Daien. More like a symbolic hero that a lot of people can respect. And on the surface of things, Micky could've been a potentail interesting character.

She chose to be Daien's general because of prince pelleas. This was her own decision. She didn't have to do And she even admits her mistakes in this excerpt from later half of Part III:

Quote:
“I can’t! I am just a weak human… I thought I’d do anything for Daein, even as far as to resort to cowardly tactics! But then I saw Sothe taken from me, and I saw him fall… I was powerless to do anything! I’d taken so many lives as a general, and yet, when I thought of Sothe dead…”

Before, I finish up here.. I've been wanting to respond to what shinon said about Eliwood being bland I don't really agree with. If there's other lords you prefer over him that's fine. Or if he's just okay to you... But I'm just saying that he does have a personality. Sure he is kind and modest and always helps a friend in there. Eliwood even has some funny dialogue here and there. Heck, why the friendship between Hector and Eliwood is done so well. But what interests me about Eliwood is that he does express emotion. The scene when he slays Ninian in ice dragon form I felt was the strongest part that highlighted Eliwoods characterization. He not only loses his father but he lost someone that he cared for and loved. He lost someone by his own hand which makes it even more tragic.

I really like all of his supports and he's a fun character. I might go deeper later but I've talked enough for now.

Hey, that's okay that you don't agree with my views, Rhys. =D We are different. And, I said "Outside of storyline purposes" in regards to his personality being bland, Rhys. All the points you brought up validate the more storyline ones. I mean his random conversations with his supports that aren't directly discussing the plotline, or events happening, ect. He's kind and considerate for all, but it doesn't... Have as much depth. I don't think that's quite the word I'm looking for, but his words, the discussions, if it's not geared towards plot, or discussing his background, or him having a serious moment, his words lose a lot of strength and meaning, his personality becomes more scripted as it were, I personally didn't feel as moved or have anything jump out at me from him.

I can possibly say that maybe my expectations are too high, but this is, of course, my opinion. And I'm cool with you and others disagreeing, we're all different and have our own views and outlooks on things.

I don't really like the term "Mary Sue" either. The only reason I use it for Micaiah is because I put her through a mary sue litmus test (or something like that) and she came out with a pretty high score.

But yeah, with that definition, she's not a Mary sue, so I'll try to avoid calling her that in the future. Whatever she is, she still rubs me the wrong way. So much potential... and the writers wasted it.

As for the placement of Eirika and Ephraim, I think it's kinda why Roy's so low on my list. Eirika was just more memorable than Ephraim. I also like seeing naive, kind leaders learn how to lead without sacrificing all of their kindness along the way (like they did with Elincia). Maybe I'm remembering her arc wrong, but I really haven't had access to a gameboy that could play Sacred Stones in a looooooong time.

Well alright. And it's not just you, the problem with Micaiah being called that term I was mostly mplying to the whole Fire Emblem fanbase in general. It seems Micaiah gets a negative reception. I understand not liking her, but there's people out there that downright hate her for the wrong reasons.

Also, not having access to Sacred Stones in awhile I totally understand. I haven't played RD in a long time so most of my memory on it is sorta fuzzy.

Here is the problem with so-called Mary Sues: when people are discussing whether someone is or isn’t one, EVERYONE needs to have the same definition and this virtually never happens. And Micaiah demonstrates that.

Some people would argue that the Silver Haired Maiden of rare ancestry who can heal people without staves on the spot like Jesus and can hear the voice of a deity like Jesus and doesn’t initially know her true heritage or family like an orphan and who becomes the leader of a army without much war experience very quickly (sorry Taureneo, even with all your years of military experience, the new girl is going to outrank you) is the textbook example of a Mary Sue.

And some would argue it isn’t a Mary Sue at all because some argue being a Mary Sue requires you to be perceived as perfect and never making a mistake and never having any flaws with how special you with powers no one else possesses not factoring into the equation.

I’ve honestly seen thorough arguments from both camps. Bottom line, we need to drop that term and actually critique the character in question directly without relying on that term. If someone would be a Mary Sue and that is bad, point out why that character is bad without relying on the term. If someone is a complex character of interest, point out those points. The term at this point is a crutch and insufficient for pointing something out. With that out of the way, I’ve been without my Wii back in Texas for a good long while no, so I’m largely working off my memory.

I agree with everything Tiki said. Not going to cover the same territory, but I’ll add a few other quips

I think part of my problem with Micaiah is actually her devotion to her country and how that’s treated. It’s established that she’s traveled across the continent, but she’s put in a situation where she makes it clear she’d essentially rather see every other country around her perish if she can save only Daien and for someone as well-traveled as her, I think that is more problematic. I would LOVE for more morally ambiguous main characters in Fire Emblem, unlikely as that is, but while some would argue Micaiah does get thrown into really grey territory, she’s largely treated as having white morality at worst and questionable morality being swept under the rug as needed at best. If the game would more openly call her flaws actual flaws (better yet; let there be consequences for flaws rather than becoming queen of a happy country with happy endings for all with no one mad at anyone else at the end). This is more the fault of how FE10 handles its story and how it unfolds than Micaiah’s herself, but she as a character does indeed suffer from it, consequently.

It’s quite the contrast how Elincia is willing to lose Lucia if she has to out of duty whereas Micaiah crumbles if Sothe is taken from her. I’ll just throw that out there.

And I think the series needs to try again to do what they tried to do with FE10 and Micaiah. There are a lot of good ideas in there. They just need to be actualized in such a manner that makes them into a great game with great characters. And if and when that happens, Micaiah should be remembered as a prototype on the road to getting to that point.

1) Leif (growth done right)
2) Sigurd (proof that simply having events happen to you can make you lovable)
3) Ike (keep it real and homoerotic)
4) Lucina (drag king with a heart of steel)
5) Hector (best mate one could have)
6) Eliwood (extremely genuine, again events happening to you can make you liked)
7) Ephraim (flat character but likable)
8 ) Marth (series mascot has endeared me over the years)
9) Chrom (a tad overly aggressive but usually on the money)
10) Lyn (yes! Leave that nobility to live the life you want)

Not even on the top 10: Roy (exact opposite of Leif), Eirika (naivete incarnate), Micaiah (gurrrl), Celice (whatever)

The mighty FD has spoken!

So just a minor update with the thread as far as things go. A certain good buddy of mine asked me a question earlier concerning the thread and whether if we're allowed to have ties with our choices. I personally see nothing wrong with it so I am going to allow it. But only if you absoulutely can't narrow it down or something.
