User ImageKivi was supposed to be meeting her friend Brenning for a catch-up session. He had been so very busy raising his family with Lyti that she had not had many opportunities to see him since, well, since they were married, really. An uncharitable part of her mind wondered if this was because Lyti had forbidden her husband to spend time with his former best friend, but try as she might she could not really believe that of Lyti. The small, soft-spoken lioness would not do something like that. She probably wouldn't even take steps to make sure Bren couldn't make his appointment to see Kivi.

Something had come up, Kivi told herself. His daughter Svana was out on her first viking. That had to be a cause for concern for him, at least a little. And with only one of his cubs out viking and all the others no doubt clamouring to be afforded the same opportunity, she could imagine that his den was hardly the most serene place in the pride. Something had probably come up.

She would wait. Even though he was already quite late.

Well, fine. That gave her time for a quick dust bath. Might get some of the itchies out of her shoulders, where she couldn't easily reach. Rolling and shimmying in the dust might not have looked very dignified, but it did put her in a better mood. There was a slightly stupid, blissful expression on her face. So what if Bren was late? She was getting rid of her itchy spots.

I did not forget! I am just slow. I apologize.

Princess_Feylin
Nooo worries, with work I'm terribly slow.

Odfel was feeling much better now that he had taken a few more herbs and gotten some food in him. He had a lot of time to recover from his bout with illness, though he probably took more time than he really should have in it. His sister had been taking care of him, keeping him fed and helping him whenever he pitifully asked her for something, until she realized he was feeling better.

Then she got him off his lazy butt and made him start taking care of himself. All good things had to come to an end, he supposed. If only he was a good enough viking to find a thrall to take care of him, so he could then stop being a good enough viking and return to being lazy.

But that was just never going to happen. He was, due to genetics and his disposition, not destined for anything more than being a fail face.

He did not think there was anything wrong with being a nice guy, though. Sure, it would not get him too far here, but maybe one day he could find a new pride to be a part of, and he would not be constantly scared of running into the wrong lion who would just want to show him how pathetic he really is.

He was well aware, thanks.

Odfel was half way into a dust cloud before he saw it, taking a deep breath as he gasped in surprise and inhaled what had to be half a pound of airborne dirt. Coughing, he decided to keep walking forward while unable to see or breathe, and ran right into something that was wriggling on the ground. With a huff of strangled surprise, he fell over on top of Kivi.

Kivi let out an alarmed and not at all terrifying squeak of dismay when someone fell across her as she rolled in the dust. She wasn't hurt or anything, just startled, and so she was quick to scramble to her feet, only to begin sneezing almost immediately. She hadn't realized what a cloud she'd been stirring up with her rolling around until she stood up and found herself trying to breathe dust particles.

"Ah...I'm so - ztchah! - sorry. I was just having - ztchah! - a dust bath."

Her apology was muffled by much sniffling and sneezing. Some people in the pride had difficulties with mold and creeping damp. It made them sneeze and sniffle like she was doing now, and even made their eyes weepy. The perpetual damp had never bothered her much, but she apparently had difficulties with dust. Good to know, she decided.

"Are you all right? Ztcha! You didn't hurt yourself when you, er, landed, did you?" She was trying to be tactful and avoid saying that he had tripped over her.

Lithiasaur
Ah, work. It interferes with my goof-off time, but they pay me, and I like that.

Odfel felt like a heel, and he did his best to try and haul himself off of whatever it was he just squashed. He really needed to be more careful, and was hoping he had not landed on a cub or something. Oh God, he would not be able to handle the guilt if he hurt a cub! Or anyone, actually, and he felt that hit him when he saw the female he had tripped over.

"N-no," he choked out, shaking his head furiously to emphasize his point, his pink mane poofing out as he did so.

He looked at her sheepishly, offering her a smile and sinking his head down back into his shoulders a bit, drooping and looking bashful and ashamed of himself. He did not exactly scream confidence and power, that much was obvious.

"Ah, no, I'm fine. Thanks... I ended up landing on something pretty soft. I mean. Not... not pretty, that's not what I mean, I'm not trying to... that's not to say you're not pretty, I just meant... uh... a-anyway, I hope I didn't squish you when I tripped. I'm very... clumsy."

That was the most gentle way he could put it, he supposed. He had been called much worse, and tended to agree.

If Odfel felt like a heel, Kivi felt like she'd swallowed the entire foot. Or something to that effect. She was definitely the bearer of the greater fault. He would never have tripped if he'd been able to see, which he would have been if she hadn't stirred up a dirty great cloud of dust.

It was hard to maintain feelings of remorse, however, when she caught sight of the lion's pink pouf of a mane. Stormlords, that was adorable. Especially while he wore that sheepish smile. Kivi had always had a soft spot for people who were, well, on the softer side, emotionally or physically. Her first love had been pillowy to the point that a less charitable lion might have called him fat. Given his lateness today, she might have called him that herself, just to irk him.

She grinned back awkwardly, sneezed again, and then wondered if there was snot on her nose, because awkwardness is catching and a snotty nose would be just the thing to make her look like a total dweeb. Trying to be surreptitious, she brought one paw to her nose to check for snot before she forged ahead, trying to smooth things over.

"Not squished. At least, not that I've noticed yet. If I turn out to have a flattened portion of my tail or something later, I'll have to hunt you down though. Er, not really though. I mean, I'm definitely fine. That was a joke. A bad one, probably. I'm usually a lot better at people than this."

Yep. Awkwardness was definitely catching.

Odd was a softie in all regards. He was more like his grandfather than he could ever know, considering he had never met the goofy, kindhearted Pridelander. He was not exactly built for the Viking life, but he did his best, as this was the home he was born into, and he had a lot of help from his much more efficient and skilled sister. She tended to be his protector, more often than not.

At least so far he had not had any huge issues with any of the other Freeborns, or Reavers. Mostly because he did what he could to stay out of their paths. That whole iron blooded pride was not exactly his forte, and he would lose in almost any contest of strength or skill.

Probably spectacularly at that.

"Oh, good, I'd feel really bad if I did end up hurting you. I got the joke though!" he sounded very proud of himself at that, realized how stupid he sounded for being that proud, and cleared his throat. "Uh. I tend to have that effect on others. The whole... bad with them thing. But it's nice to meet you, uh... err... well, my name is Odfel. Or. Just Odd. That's fitting. I bet your name is something pretty or uh."

He blinked, then looked down at his paws as if they had suddenly become very interesting. Another thing he was not very good at was flirting.

"Oh, good. I'm glad you did. My brother, the Miz, he has the worst sense of humor. He'll laugh at the strangest things. And not just because he's a hyena. Er. My family's a little unusual." Kivi shut herself up with an effort.

Babbling was one thing. It wasn't great or anything, but it wasn't awful. Babbling about her family, however, could become awful pretty quickly, between having two mothers and a brother who's a hyena. She learned to fight so that she could defend her family to people who disparaged it. She would hate to find herself in a situation now where she actually would have to murder this nice, fluffy lion.

"It's good to meet you, too, Odd." She spoke firmly but with a friendly smile, hoping to convey that there should be no further discussion of her family, but she was not opposed to further discussion in general. "My name's Kivi. I'm not sure I'd call it pretty, but I like it."

She had actually completely failed to notice that there might have been an attempt to flirt with her. Those sorts of things usually went whizzing over her head, at least during the actual event. Several hours later she might realize what she'd missed and do a facepaw.

"Your brother is a hyena? That's really cool," Odd was honestly curious about that, knowing enough to at least understand that it was not a blood relation, but some sort of strange extended family. Or was it? There were plenty of things he did not understand in this world, after all...

And the more he thought about things, the more confused he got.

"My sister, Rust, who is a lion so not as interesting, doesn't really like jokes, either. She thinks I'm too soft and lazy to be a viking, and when I make jokes she just rolls her eyes at me."

He sighed, but he always thought she had a point.

"I like it, too," he said, regarding her name, smiling and swishing his tail behind him. He was nothing if not honest, and rarely noticed when things he said could be taken as flirting. If he put effort into it, he failed completely, so it was always a very dangerous line to walk.

"So, are you up to anything today? I hope, besides ruining your dust bath and potentially crushing some of your insides, I haven't messed up too many of your plans..."

Kivi could not help her somewhat gratified smile when Odfel didn't say anything terrible when she mentioned the Miz. She liked this lion, so far, and she would not have liked to have to not like him.

She winced sympathetically to hear about his sister. "It seems there's got to be at least one of those in every family. People who take themselves entirely too seriously, I mean. There has got to be more to life than raiding and all that."

Not that Kivi had anything against the Stormborn way of life. She quite enjoyed it, actually, by and large. She didn't want to go out there and be a reaver, and she had always sort of hoped to marry a well-respected reaver someday, but the more time she spent around reavers, both well-respected and otherwise, the less she was convinced she actually wanted to spend the rest of her life married to one. The loneliness itself when he went a-viking would be just awful.

"Oh, um, today?" What was he getting at? Did he want to as her to spend more time with him? Kivi wouldn't mind that at all. But, oh, no. He was just being apologetic still.

"Well, I was supposed to be meeting a friend, but I don't think he's coming. Probably he got caught up in something. With his cubs." She felt awkward adding that last bit, but she didn't want to give Odfel the mistaken impression that she and Bren were anything more than friends.

"You haven't messed anything up," she concluded brightly.

Lithiasaur
Oy. So sorry about the wait on this one. I don't know where the time went.

Princess_Feylin
No worries!

"I think it's more that I don't take myself seriously enough, and she's all too aware of that. I mean, I know she cares and just wants what is best for me but uh..."

She was a bit too mean about it, sometimes, but maybe that was because he refused to change his ways. It was not something he did on purpose, really. He was just... bad at most things. It was genetics after all. That was, at least, what they all defaulted to when they had to explain why they were so bad at life.

He smiled at Kivi, though, swinging his tail behind him and feeling pretty okay with himself, considering how awkward he generally was. Especially with females. And he would definitely mess things up sooner rather than later, and remember why he was so weird all the time.

But still.

"He?" Odd didn't mean to say it out loud, or sound as disappointed as he did, and he let out an eep as he tried to cover it up. "Uh, well. Cubs huh? That's good. I mean. Well. Did you want to uh... go find something to do instead?"

Kivi's head tilted to one side as she listened with genuine sympathy to Odfel talk about his critical sister. She supposed she could actually understand both lions' points of view, and in the ordinary course of things she might actually have sided with his sister, but since she did not know his sister and she rather liked Odfel, she was more inclined to come down on his side of things in this instance.

When he smiled at her, she returned it, quick and delighted by how he seemed to be perking up after their somewhat inauspicious beginning. And neither of them were sneezing, which was even better. Kivi had never had strong feelings about sneezing either way until very, very recently, but now she had concluded that she never wanted to sneeze ever again, although she also suspected that sneezing would forever after remind her of meeting Odfel, and that wouldn't be an awful thing.

"They're cute cubs," she said without much enthusiasm. She liked Bren's cubs well enough, actually. She liked cubs in general. But she and Bren's mate did not get along, and that tended to color her opinion on many matters.

"But I would love to find something else to do." She paused for a moment, and then added, "You did mean with you, right?"

Lithiasaur
I'm so sorry! I just vanished and took forever to reply and I was really enjoying this RP and I hope you are still interested in doing stuff with the two of them because they're adorable together, but I'll totally understand if you'd rather not because I really have become the worst flake ever. OTL
PostPosted: Fri Mar 27, 2015 1:56 pm

Princess_Feylin
I am definitely still interested, no worries. I am definitely really good at just vanishing, too, so I understand how it goes.

Having entirely the wrong idea about things now, Odfel awkwardly nodded his head and offered her a sheepish smile. If there was one thing he absolutely knew, it was he could not compete with any other male on the face of the planet.

So, as interesting and nice as she was, if she already had a mate and cubs, or whatever the story was, he would stand no chance in stealing her away. The very idea was outrageous to him, anyway, and that was just one more thing that made him decidedly less viking than many of the others.

He did not like to steal. He just wanted to earn what he got, and do what felt right. Have fun. Live an easy, trouble free life.

Assuming the worst, he quickly accepted that he was failing, once again, and would have to keep working at it. That did not mean he was going to miss the chance to hang out with her, though. For some reason, he still had a small sense of hope...

"Uh, yes, with me! I hoped so, anyway. We could go find a place to relax, or explore a bit or... maybe hunt some food?"

"Any of those sound good," Kivi said, wanting to be agreeable and not considering that she was probably being spectacularly unhelpful instead by not specifying a preference.

"I'm really glad I met you," she remarked. "This was definitely a better way to spend my day than my other plans. I'll have to remember to thank Bren for standing me up. After I box his ears, of course."

She sneaked a quick look at Odd from the sides of her eyes, checking to see how he reacted to that, but she wasn't hugely concerned. Not about her plans to hit Bren, anyway. After all, Kivi was a very nice lioness, but she had been raised in the Stormborn and she was perfectly capable of casual violence, when the occasion called for it. Standing a friend up absolutely warranted getting smacked up the side of the head, even if the overall outcome was better because of it.

Kivi was somewhat more concerned that he would be freaked out by her declaration that she was glad to have met him. It was the truth, and Kivi did tend to be honest almost to the point of being blunt, but she didn't want to weird her new hopefully-friend out.

Lithiasaur
I'm relieved! Do you want to start wrapping this RP up?
PostPosted: Sun Apr 12, 2015 8:04 pm

Princess_Feylin
I think so!

Odd smiled at her and relaxed a little, glad to hear that she was happy to be stood up. Maybe he had a little bit of a chance to... to what? Get her attention? He had it? What more could he want from her? he was not that kind of a lion, the brute kind of vikings that liked to take what they wanted and expected things when they decided it should be theirs. He was not even thinking anything like that.

What was he thinking?

His brain might have been turning off. He was not sure any more. Where had all these nerves come from all of a sudden?

Oh right, she agreed to spend time with him.

"I don't think anyone has ever said they were glad to meet me, so that's a first! Uh. Thank you! Come on, I've got an idea." He bounced off to lead the way, or maybe he was just running away from his nerves as best as he could. Either way, he had his mind set on taking her to do something fun, as promised, and he was not going to fail on this one!

He just wanted to see where this went.

Always up for an adventure, Kivi didn't have to give a second thought to whether she would follow Odd along with his idea.

"I can't wait!" she exclaimed with a wide grin. Kivi's teeth when she grinned were very sharp, but her expression held no menace. It was pure delight.

She didn't even ask what they were going to do. Odd seemed like a nice person, and she was perfectly willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that any activity he proposed would be one she would enjoy taking part in.
